  1. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) Let's say a guy like Griffey is put on waivers and nobody claims him but the Sox. Now the Sox & Reds agree on a trade involving Young, Rogowski and a fringe prospect. Wouldn't Young, Rogowski and the prospect also have to clear waivers before they can be traded to the Reds? Only players on the 40-man roster would have to clear waivers.... That means rogo, who has no shot of clearing waivers. The Sox would have to put together a package with guys who don't need to be protected yet. (Young, Valido, Sweeney, Anderson, Liotta, Gio) all fit this bill.
  2. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 01:13 PM) Will someone please come out and say the White Sox will NOT be getting Ken Griffey Jr. to save us from two weeks of absolute message board hell? Normally I'd be right with you Addy, but I was holding onto the thought that Griffey would be slipping trough waivers this week in the back of my mind. That, teamed with this story, KW's propensity to make a big move, Frank going down, our current position, and the rest of baseball standing pat, means there's a lot of truth to this rumor. I have no doubt that KW is trying to get something done. Now you may be holding out because Reds managment is a joke, and on that I would agree with you, but we know KW is out there trying.
  3. Waivers just might be the most complicated single aspect of the rules. In the rule book, a waiver is defined as "... a permission granted for certain assignments of player contracts or for the unconditional release of a Major League player ..." If a player placed on Major League waivers is not claimed by another team during the three business days after waivers have been requested, then the players is said to have "cleared waivers," and the team has secured waivers for the remainder of the waiver period. And what does that mean? Essentially, the team can do with the player's contract as it pleases. This generally means one of three things: (1) They can send him to the minors (subject to his consent, if he's a "Veteran Player," more on that below). (2) They can release him, which makes the player a free agent and thus available to sign with any team. (3) They can trade him to another team, even if the so-called "trading deadline" has passed. Any trades made after July 31 may only involve players who have cleared waivers. If a player doesn't clear waivers -- in other words, if he's claimed by another team or teams -- the club requesting waivers may withdraw the waiver request. If the club doesn't withdraw the waiver request, the player's contract is assigned in the following manner: (A) If only one claim is entered, the player's contract is assigned to that claiming club. (B) If more than one club in the same league makes claims, the club currently lower in the standings gets the player. © If clubs in both leagues claim the player, preference shall always go to the club in the same league as the club requesting waivers. There are other, more esoteric rules involved here. For example, during the first 30 days of the season, the previous season's final standings are used to determine claim order, rather than the current standings.
  4. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 12:39 PM) I'd be willing to bet Griffey already has or soon will pass through waivers. Agreed. I know we're using boston as an example earlier in this thread, but they're not the team we'd have to worry about claiming him. The only two teams I can see putting a claim on Griffey is Us and NY.
  5. QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 12:18 PM) We needed to upgrade at SS, and KW goes out and gets another OF.. Does that make sense? NO, If Wookies are living on Endore.. It doesn't make sense..Does it? What do 8ft wookies have in common with 3ft Ewoks? Is Orlando Cabrera available?
  6. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ Aug 3, 2005 -> 12:16 PM) I don't believe the reports, any of them. Cinci needs arms, not Chris Young. Why would they trade for Young when they would already have an OF of Dunn, Kearns and Pena? With Griffey gone they could easily afford to resign Dunn. I'm willing to bet that the prospect package would have included a Tracey or McCarthy over Young. You beat me to the punch... This is exactly what I was gonna post.
  7. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 07:36 PM) I see a Jon Adkins appearance in the near future. That was Jon Adkins
  8. it was the hot dogs.... http://www.thpsales.com/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=1024
  9. $18.4M -- I'd pay him 5M for the next couple of seasons, but he's going to be in his decline phase fairly soon.
  10. I wonder what he got. He seemed to be one of the most underappreciated guys in baseball. Philly made the right move offering him arbitration, with Utley clearly ready to take over. But they dropped the ball by still claiming that David Bell was their everyday 3B.
  11. I don't know what happened, but Lemon accidentally found some decent control recently. He has actually become a useful part of the GF Sox bullpen. In fact, he leads the team in appearences. Currently Nick has a 4.19 ERA in 19.1 IP. He's allowed only 12 hits, while striking out 19 and walking 9. To top it all off, he hasn't thrown a WP or hit a batter in well over a month. If it wasn't for his age and league, he'd almost resemble a real prospect.
  12. QUOTE(heirdog @ Aug 2, 2005 -> 08:40 AM) Fine, we can have some FAs...how about Zach Duke, Justin Verlander, BJ Upton, Felix Pie and Prince Fielder Great those are 5 guys who aren't going to reach free agency until 2010 or later.
  13. Dude, Tek's the guy who brings out the shots of Jack before the game. That's why he's captain. Duh!
  14. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 11:19 PM) Nah, MLB.tv uses the Orioles feed. Also, I think they only replay it once, and that was at 7PM.
  15. I can root for Honel, but he's likely done within the organization. He will have to be put back on the 40 man next off-season to protect him in the Rule 5 draft, and unless he puts up some impressive numbers in the second half, he'll be left off, and snatched up by another team. That doesn't mean he won't be back, cuz I don't think he'll stick in the bigs next season. It's going to be a long road back for Honel.
  16. From the scouting report on Broadway, he's the type of pitcher who we should expect to succeed at the lower levels. It is nice to see him striking guys out, but I won't be excited until I see him start doing it at a higher level.
  17. Mine's broken. I can't read anything after the 'more' link.
  18. betting on who took steroids?
  19. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 04:10 PM) I only wish somebody had compared Cotts to Ryan prior to the season.... Oh wait. searches the archives.... I can't find it, or rather, I gave up searching after 15 minutes, but I made this comparison after Neal's terrible season last year. The stuff was there. You could see it. The minor league numbers were there. You could see it. It was only a matter of time.
  20. I only wish somebody had compared Cotts to Ryan prior to the season.... Oh wait. searches the archives....
  21. McCarthy also had a nice month. Starting to rebound. Fields starting to figure it out? I love Sweeney's line... He had a poor June, but that (337/.402/.446) is essentially the same thing he posted for April + May. Yes, the lack of power is of some concern, but that he's able to get on base at a .400 clip in 3 of his first 4 months at AA as a 20 year old tells me this kid knows how to hit.
  22. QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 01:27 PM) Too bad umps can't be fined or suspended for bad calls. Actually they can be for both. It's all done very covertly though.
  23. QUOTE(TheBlackSox8 @ Aug 1, 2005 -> 01:20 PM) if the guy at second or first get out....the streak is still intact because they are buehrles runners....and only one more out is needed or so i think that's how it goes No, MB only recorded 17 outs.
  24. Oh that Timo. He sure is the joker. Everyone loves him.
