  1. QUOTE (SI1020 @ May 6, 2016 -> 08:44 PM) I'll try since I'm ancient and love the subject of history. About five decades ago Bill Veeck said that all things being equal Chicago would normally be partial to the Cubs. This was at the tail end of the go go era, in which the Sox had 17 straight winning seasons, beat the Cubs in attendance all but one of those years, and ruled the sports pages. Sports writers like John Carmichael, Warren Brown and Bill Gleason made sure the Sox got strong if not always uncritical press. That began to change after 1967. The Sox quit winning and were no longer on WGN. Coincidentally the Cubs began a 6 season streak of winning which included the epic collapse of 1969. Writers like Rick Talley of the old Chicago Today and others were openly fawning towards the Cubs and correspondingly hostile to the Chicago White Sox. Starting in 1984 the tide really began to change and I attribute that to the Tribune Company buying the Cubs in 1981. Everything was Cubs Cubs Cubs and little kids in places like Enid, Oklahoma and Bowling Green, Kentucky would come home from school and finds the Cubs game on TV. This is when the Sox really lost the popularity battle not only on their home ground but nationally as well. The changing demographics of the Chicago area favored the Cubs too. Additionally places like NW Indiana and SW Michigan, that were definitely Sox territory in the go go era no longer were. I know this is an extremely capsulized look at the issue but the Cubs have decisively won on the popularity front. When is the last year the Sox beat the Cubs in attendance? The Cubs are far more popular now, they can get 3 million or so to come to the park in years that they stink. The Chicago area is not the population and jobs mecca it once was and I don't think that it's etched in stone that the Sox will always and forever remain in Chicago. If the Sox decide to ever move, or have to move because of people leaving the city in droves, I hope they consider the Western suburbs of Chicago. It's a very different vibe out there and the Sox would sell out every game I betcha in Naperville or Schaumburg or Lisle, somewhere like that. Build some kind of palace, 8th wonder of the world in the suburbs and get some rich Chicago company to build it and embrace it. Only place I'd support the Sox besides Chicago and the Western Suburbs is Vegas. Otherwise they'd be dead to me. However, they'd probably build an indoor stadium in Vegas cause of the temps and I hate indoor baseball. The Sox would take suburbia by storm, however. Do you agree?
  2. QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ May 8, 2016 -> 04:20 AM) At a SW side wedding tonight, total CFD/Polish (down by the airport variety... you know... fly in the extended fam from Warsaw) and half the men gathered round the TV watching the Sox. Lotta Sox talk, the buzz is palpable amongst the base. That's pretty awesome the wedding crowd was into a Sox-Twins game. Glad to see the Sox have done the best possible thing to neutralize Cub fever -- get off to this red-hot start. One thing I've noticed is how hard some guys hit the ball. My gawd, Lawrie, Frazier for starters. Great win. Sale is the master. Hope the Sox keep it up. I guess bringing in the new blood has really helped the team. I don't feel like they're going to bow down against the Central with the new blood leading the way, coupled with the maturation of Sale and Q. Melky obviously is feeling comfy at the plate in his second season with his new team. Rodon is going to be a big key this season; we need 3 fantastic starters and Latos/No. 5 probably will wind up iffy. GREAT WIN TONIGHT. Crowd was into it again.
  3. He looks good. I have two pairs of glasses is all. If I didn't hate shopping so much I'd probably buy more as well.
  4. I'll trust Hahn on how to handle this one. Like the column said, Reinsdorf has been very loyal. True the contract is about up, but considering how badly the Sox have fared overall under Robin, it's probably fair to wait til the end of the season. Robin is doing fine, though, this season.
  5. Trump says Bernie should run independent because of his treatment by the Democratic party movers and shakers. I'd be for that. I wonder if that would guarantee Trump the 'W'
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 7, 2016 -> 12:00 PM) Should be Time's Person of the Year if he hasn't already....Nobel Peace Prize, on its way as well. If Obama can win it based on what he might have been able to accomplish in the future (mostly theoretically)...then Francis clearly should receive the award. Great point. Francis is a prime candidate for Person of the Year.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 7, 2016 -> 01:41 PM) It would be idiotic for Hilary not to take advantage of his insight and experience...that said, MANY things have changed in the sixteen years since he was last president. He looks frailer, weaker and less energetic. Can still give a great stump speech, far better than his wife, but that's not exactly a high standard to meet. Agreed. It is weird that when I think of Bill I think happy thoughts. WHenI think of Hillary ... I don't need to go there. But it's weird I love one of the two so much and don't like the other.
  8. Shots fired on Mizzou's campus last night. Nobody knows if it's kids celebrating the end of school firing shots in the air, or an incident. This got me to wondering a poll question. If you were a white student on campus and somebody demanded you acknowledge your "white privilege" in a confrontational setting would you do it? Because of the rudeness involved and my own self pride I would not. They'd have to beat me up. And I am not prejudiced in any way, trust me. I have a zillion African American friends. I'm not going to provide specific examples of that; trust me I'm colorblind and always have been. But if confronted in a library or mall or whatever by a gang would u acknowledge your white privilege if you are white? And this is not hyperbole. This is going on at Missouri campus and should be discussed by all families before they send their kids there to go to school.
  9. The new pope is the real deal. Catholicism is back.
  10. You guys act like I yelled at the man who was dressed as a woman or tripped him or did something disgusting. All I did was choose to not follow him in Subway and get in line behind him. This site is very liberal, I stand by that, when you are in favor of having a person with male body parts going into a bathroom with full blooded women. It's different when the person transitions and has his male body part removed, etc. Just because you envision yourself a woman doesn't give you the right to bring your male body part into a women's safe haven.
  11. At least Sandusky is rotting in prison. Our legal system at least got him at some point. Terrible crimes; some of the worst in history of mankind.
  12. QUOTE (lostfan @ May 6, 2016 -> 05:23 PM) That article doesn't support your point - it's arguing that the people making these new rules and enforcing them are the true weirdos. I truly can't believe that in 2016 we actually are allowing human beings with male body parts to go in a female restroom if the human being with male body parts "identifies as a woman." All the wacko crimes in America today .... the protective parent generation where they won't take their eyes off their kids for 20 seconds and we are all for letting a human being with male body parts into a restroom with women/girls, whatever. I truly don't get our country anymore. And I can't believe I am the one who looks bad here. Look to me it's simple. If you have male body parts you gotta use the men's room. Sorry but that seems very basic to me.
  13. The Democratic thread needs to discuss the only real issue. What's Bill going to be like back in the White House? If the two really are kind of estranged it's going to be obvious in their day to day life at the White House. This is one of those deals where Bill could step up his speaking engagements as a former president and make a helluva lot of money in his aging years. I mean think about the fees he can charge as a former president and now the First Man. Is Hillary going to listen to him? Shoo him away like a fly on her lapel?
  14. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 6, 2016 -> 07:27 PM) He was an intern with Boers and Bernstein. Dan mentioned the other day that people told him that Jason needs to stop doing the announcer voice. Dan says that it's his voice. That's how he sounds all the time, even during regular conversations. I haven't noticed the announcer voice that much. I can't listen to KC Royals baseball with guys like Steve Stewart and Physioc embarrassing themselves with awful enunciating of every word. Ryan Lefevre does it a little bit. I bet he would have taken the voice of the White Sox job if offered. He's not bad and son of former White Sox Jim Lefevre.
  15. Great to come back and beat a bad team at home after two losses. Nice to see Robin get upset. The veins in his neck were really showing. Melky with four hits. Glad to see him turning into a new Melky, a base hit machine.
  16. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 7, 2016 -> 03:19 AM) Nate's didn't look intentional in the slightest, nor did the situation call for it. The fact that Abreu was so angry, to me, is additional evidence that Nate's was an accident -- he's been drilled in retaliation before, and he's always very calmly taken his base. I've NEVER seen him angry like that about anything at all. Great point! And since ours wasn't on purpose and theirs was, the Sox still owe them one. Sale is emotional so look for one to come whizzing in the first inning. Wish it didn't have to be that way. Maybe the umps will warn both teams before the game starts. That would be a way to stop it. I mean if both teams get warned and Sale drills a Twin, that's just stupid. If teams aren't warned, he'll drill one IMO.
  17. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 7, 2016 -> 03:03 AM) If I know anything about Chris Sale it's that he'll do whatever hell he wants to do and it won't really matter whether or not it's a good decision. His "emotional judgement" doesn't seem to be the strongest. He won't make it out of the first inning. Let's just hope the ump warns him only. I can't believe the Twinks immediately retaliated tonight. That means the new unwritten rulebook in baseball is "retaliate immediately" when your guy gets hit. 10-4 lead I doubt Nate drilled the guy on purpose. If he did, that was dumb. You don't awaken a sleeping dog.
  18. Awesome that Melky has reinvented himself. He's got no power but he's an on base machine. Awesome.
  19. Glad Robin got tossed. You'd think the Twinkies could stand one pitch getting away from Nate. But nooooo ... they had to throw at Abreu. That was bulls*** to nail Abreu. To not eject the pitcher is riduculous. Obviously 100 percent he meant to hit Abreu. Now we have to hit a guy tomorrow and our starter will get ejected.
  20. Soxtalk is a very liberal forum. There are a lot of people who probably agree with me, that the sight of a guy in drag as you say wouldn't be somewhat concerting/alarming/distasteful. A lot of guys aren't into that. http://www.sheknows.com/living/articles/11...target-bathroom I can't believe in the 2016, in the age of protective parents, agreeing to let guys with male body parts in the same restroom with females. But I'm bad for saying that.
  21. Team isn't fooling around this year. There seems a sense of urgency this year. We'll see what happens. Team needs to shrug off the Bosox series and beat Minnie and avoid a slump. We're at home. Need to win. It's next up with Johnson sucking in his one start.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 6, 2016 -> 02:15 AM) Maybe greg likes foot longs? Uh oh in a politically correct charged environment like soxtalk that is a risque joke. I can't believe people are jumping on me for not being crazy about standing in line and eating next to some guy in a dress and heels. The guy is not pulling off well being a woman and I'm not all that interested in being around somebody who is making me uncomfortable at dinnertime.
  23. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 3, 2016 -> 02:15 PM) The biggest problem is that Steve Stone sucks with Hawk. The Benetti pairing is bringing the best out of Stone. People better get used to it though because I think Jason Benetti will be the voice of the White Sox for a long time. Very true. Hawk is grouchy at least 40 percent of the games I'd say. Stone and Bennetti definitely are having more camaraderie together. QUOTE (AJUribe @ May 6, 2016 -> 03:55 AM) Gave Jason a chance, l'm sorry but he sucks. I turn on music now when he announces. Total nerd, makes lame jokes, only positive is stone gives more insight. Interesting post. One Sox fan turns the sound down cause of JB. I haven't noticed him being that bad though he got into the cigar jokes with Stoney. I found it OK since cigars were in the news with the Sox giving a box of them to Big Papi.
  24. Another lousy game. Danks couldn't have done much worse. Johnson can't get a break in big league starts. He had to go against a tough team. We're gonna need to play better ball against KC's and Detroit's of the world if we want to win the division.
  25. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ May 6, 2016 -> 02:55 AM) What's Austin Jackson good at, again? Hitting with the bases loaded according to the stats. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ May 6, 2016 -> 03:04 AM) Just think, If Mat Latos didn't show he did in his first handful of starts, this entire season looks completely different. True, but that's a hypothetical. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ May 6, 2016 -> 03:17 AM) Avi looks so much better now. Some at bats he's locked in and rakes. Most at bats he blows. Remains to be seen if he can become consistent.
