It must be weird to be a major leaguer like Dunn and constantly hear/read how worthless you are. I mean when's the last time anybody had a positive word to say about Adam Dunn's ability. It's usually mocking the 1-for-40 he's in or the insane amount of strikeouts he's putting up in a week. Oh well, he gets paid zillions of dollars despite hearing how he's not nearly good enough. Most working stiffs make about $30,000 a year to hear the same on a daily basis from their clueless superiors. I think the only good things said about him were during the inevitable preseason stories about how much weight he's lost and that one stretch of 7 days where he allegedly had decided to start going the opposite way to thwart the shift.

Northwestern Wildcat Players Attempt to Unionize
greg775 replied to StrangeSox's topic in The Filibuster
The rest of the players in NCAA basketball and football should take advantage of Northwestern's due diligence. The NW players did all the work. Now all this needs is publicity and just a tad bit of organization at each school to jump aboard. Northwestern should do a nationwide advertisement saying they'd like a recent ftball or basketball graduate of each school to contact somebody in charge of this. NW has done the work; I'd hate to see this go to waste. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 06:16 PM) As I stated, you wouldn't be burning bridges, because signing these guys for multiyears with draft pick compensation is doing them a solid at this point. The White Sox aren't in danger of becoming the Marlins, but if you want to be ultra conservative, like is being suggested on this board, being the Marlins might be the best case scenerio for what you will become. I have never seen a group of fans so opposed to increasing the talent level of their team. Amen to your last sentence. It's like there is a group on here who wants bad players cause it means we're still rebuilding. It's not like the cost of going to a game is going to decrease any, so why not put the heat on our front office to spend some money and get some more good players??

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 04:33 AM) I think those of us advocating signing a starter that requires draft pick compensation realize Hahn isn't going to do it, but is it really the right thing to do? You know for all the hope of spending to fill holes this offseason the Sox have gotten away really cheap so far . . . I don't understand why Hahn is stopping right now. I'm thinking in the offseason, Keppinger and Gillaspie sound like very good players and Flowers/Phegs doesn't sound so bad and our pitching staff seems just fine. But that's wishful thinking, fool's gold. To all of you "rebuilding people" please please answer this. My assertion is if we added a real catcher, another starter and preferably a real second baseman we "could" win the division. It's doable to add all three. So tell me ... do you agree with my assertion we are THAT CLOSE to contending now? If the answer as I expect, is yes, then why not go for it? I'd hate to be out of the race in May when we are this close NOW.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 06:20 PM) I'm left wondering why he took the extension now when he wouldnt' take it after 2012. Cause, he's learned he likes the job and of course he likes money. He's decided he could do this awhile. At least I won't be accused of being an apologist for the manager no matter who he is. Never been crazy about Robin as manager. Of course I was crazy about his predecessor.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 02:35 AM) If you take your premise to its logical end, Chris Sale should sit out next year. His health is a much bigger risk to the franchise than any contract the Sox can enter into. I do agree with Marty on this. For all the people who have written off this upcoming season and say the Sox have no chance (which I'd agree with if Hahn doesn't make another deal or two), why even pitch Sale? Why risk it? Put him on ice so to speak for a full season and just save him until the team is ready to win. I mean what can he possibly gain from more wear and tear on the arm? If this season is just a "get a ton of at bats for Abreu, Eaton, Davidson, Semien, Phegs, Garcia, Viciedo campaign" why risk Sale's health til the team actually needs him? Sale already knows all there is to know about pitching. Any innings in a season we don't contend risk his long term health, right?? I prefer Hahn make another move or 2 and try to contend this year.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 09:48 PM) We lost almost 100 games last year. Even if this division is as putrid as you say, we'll need at least 85 wins. We have surely upgraded somewhat, largely in future returns, but do you think we got 22 wins in the offseason? Please list these wins and where they came from. Two of the biggest acquisitions this offseason were Eaton and Davidson. Both of those may be key factors in the future, but they are not at ALL dependable for production in 2014. Each is more likely to be below-average than above. The reason we signed them is to develop long-term into dependable producers. What I don't get is the impatience. Do you guys think there won't be a Santana-esque pitcher on the market next year? This is not a particularly well-saturated offseason for free agent pitching. It's our last year of the big bopper/whiff king Adam Dunn. It's Konerko's last year. We have Chris Sale for gosh sakes. We allegedly have a starting staff that can compete. We have allegedly a decent bullpen albeit no closer, which is a concern. I'm just saying we have the payroll to work with. Add a starting pitcher, pray the bullpen is finally consistent, add a bat at catcher (we can still trade Beckham and DeAza and be OK with Semien filling in for Becks) and we might win the freaking division and save Robin's job.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Jan 23, 2014 -> 08:30 PM) The future is not near and the White Sox should not go for a Santana/Jimenez. Interesting that Garza only got 13 AAV and isn't even tied to draft pick compensation. Santana/Jimenez's camps can't be happy with that. I am starting to wonder if one of these guys get Kyle Loshe'd. It's like some people suddenly don't even want to compete for a few years, thinking it means we are in total rebuild mode. We STILL have a lot of veterans on this team and a lot of good pitchers on this team. We play in a HORSEs*** division. Detroit just lost a Hall of Fame manager and Fielder. We could win this thing if we added a good veteran starter/inning eater/winner and a catcher who can hit. Now if you are saying our defense is so putrid, so horrific, that we cannot compete, perhaps I can buy that argument. But aside from defense, adding a starter like Santana and a good catcher and we should be a contender.

Oops I typed in my catcher take in the other thread before I saw this thread. I guess great minds think alike. We all had catcher on the mind.

Guys, we're getting pretty close to spring training. I think Hahn is done. Only possible move I see is signing a free agent catcher like Buck. I'm assuming Buck is still out there. Personally if he's done for this year I'd prefer passing on a hack catcher. Go with Phegs and Flowers and see if either can play. Flowers stunk royally last year, but s***, we've stuck with other Sox players much longer than Flowers. I could stomach giving him another chance since Becks keeps getting chance after chance and the same with Dunn. I think with all our additions I MAY buy mlb.com again but I think we are still well well well below a .500 team at this date.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 22, 2014 -> 09:29 PM) So the Yankees are paying $175M over the course of 7 years, or about $25M a year if you spread it out evenly...... Good f***ing luck, jackwagons. The lure of the unknown is so ridiculous in sports. 25 mill a year. Wow.

Bobby Jenks wants to make a comeback
greg775 replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
This board has changed a lot in a few years. I love the Bobby love! Remember when I almost got suspended over my Bobby love? People telling me to give it a rest, et. all? -
Bobby Bonds would be a star addition; Dan Pasqua would be great; Claudell Washington was the answer; Bobby Knopp would lead the team to greatness. Kidding. Just trying to get my mind off Beckham.
-
Beckham, please learn how to hit. Thank you.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 08:06 PM) Not according to Paul Sullivan on M&H yesterday. He said the team is leveraged to the gills, and really doesnt have a lot of wiggle room. He also mentioned that the team is asking front office people and scouts to carpool in order to save money, as well as other weird cost cutting measures. That carpool thing is bizarre. If true, I could go on a mini rant again about baseball. A million dollars here and there is absolutely NOTHING when discussing contract signings, etc. One million dollars would have to be TOTALLY a high end figure on how much they'd save if everybody car pooled to work and scouting assignments, etc. Chump change. Just raise prices of hot dogs another dollar if you need the money that bad; they are unaffordable for the average fan now anyway.

1.) Sounds like sinkholes are becoming a major problem. 2.) A few people got on me on here recently for b****ing about the unbelievably cold weather that gripped the country for about a month straight. I made a crack about global warming and people attacked me for suggesting it was not real. My question to you then is: "What's with the f***ing 10 below temperatures all over for a month???" They were real and they were here and I froze my ass off and even had to buy long underwear cause I could take it no longer!

I was at Yellow Sub today for lunch reading a USA Today and came across a good column on how the media is already planning Hillary's easy path to a landslide victory. They said Christie's lies do not deserve this kind of press compared to Obama's lies regarding Obamacare and other matters. The editorial writer said the media is primed to attack ANY and ALL candidates that might make Hillary sweat a bit. What a f***ing joke. The media wants Hillary?? Under Obama the econony is so bad that media jobs are disappearing. Newspapers are all but dead and buried. And these writers NEED to have a democratic president. I ask these writers, WTF??? It's not working for your profession. You will all be out of jobs soon unless you work for a website. I don't see the nation's love for old Hilly. And don't get on me for being age discriminatory. this whole f***ing country is going with young workers so they can pay them pennies. Anybody over 50 is out of luck in trying to find work outside of fast food. Amazing. "Anybody" might be hyperbole, but there's definitely a trend to send the oldies home for good! Wake up media. Hillary is not god.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 11, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) Implying you had respect for Rodman in the first place. I had a lot of respect for him. Outside of MJ my favorite Bull of all time. He was a f***ing stud grabbing rebound after rebound. Perfect fit for the Bulls.

Bobby Jenks wants to make a comeback
greg775 replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I want him back, but the poor guy should probably hang it up with back problems. I wonder if he could be a good color commentator, though he's already been out of the news a long time and has been forgotten in baseball outside of Chicago I'd bet. Back problems make me cringe just thinking about the pain he'll be having if he starts dealing again. -

I've lost all respect for Rodman really have. What a f***ing loser.
-
I approved but really there's no real reason for him to stop right now. The team is taking shape to be better than last year, unless the defense remains horrible, which is possible, and if the new guys for some reason can't hit a lick. But with some payroll flexibility remaining and still some bodies that might be tradeable, it'd be nice to see him acquire a catcher of some magnitude and a second baseman who can hit, assuming Semien isn't ready for another year. We need to upgrade our offense some more, assuming the defense is going to again cost us dearly. The general consensus on this board at least is the pitching should be pretty good again.

So happy for Big Hurt, Big Frank.
