QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 07:31 PM) He had an OPS of .881 and .976 last April and May. I'm not totally against a platoon but I think you play him everyday and get what you get out of him. He's had the most HRs and RBIs vs LHP on our team the last 2 years. As long as he's producing I can care less what he bats and how many Ks he gets. You said "as long as he's producing." My post was meant to point out how little he's producing. QUOTE (ron883 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 07:45 PM) wait- you want to platoon a guy who will be making 15 million a year, but you defended ozzie to death when he played highly paid guys JUST because they were highly paid, even when they were playing like crap? agenda! hypocrite! Yes, that's how sick I am of Adam Dunn. I want a platoon. As far as Ozzie, I'm glad you remember my posts, it makes me feel good that I'm verbose enough that people remember my position on matters, but you actually got it wrong. I actually said that is why Ozzie was trotting Dunn out there every day, because he had no choice in the matter. Because the Sox had acquired him and you couldn't just sit a guy making that kind of money. It would be a direct slap to the GM who had made the huge offseason move. Now a few years and zillions of strikeouts later, could you sit a guy and his 15 million? Probably not. But I can pray. Your reaction that I have an agenda and am hypocrite in this matter is wrong, though. Yes, you have to play the high paid acquisitions, but that was right after KW got Dunn. It's still true to a certain extent but yes I hope they platoon Dunn or at least cut his at bats in half. Bless those people who have gone to a ton of games the past few years despite the presence of all those Ks.

Adam Dunn has one home run this month after hitting four in August and five in July. That's still pretty pedestrian slugger numbers for a LONG stretch of games. He's 4 for 38 this month with 21 Ks. He hit .148 and .165 in April and May respectively. So basically 2 1/2 months of the year he's been totally and utterly pathetic. He's hitting .197 vs. lefties this season with six homers in 117 at bats with .294 OBP. If we're going to keep him I would get somebody he can platoon with at DH. Play him only vs. righties where he still strikes out at an alarming rate and I would truly spot his playing time in April and May. Who cares if we anger him. He'll be finally gone after next year anyway. Platoon him. In August he did hit .267 with 13 RBIs. At one point he was 8 for 15 against Detroit and Minnie in games where he was supposedly hitting to all fields more. The bulk of that damage was in 3 games vs. Minnie.

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 05:50 PM) I think we should move Beckham at this point. At this point, I don't believe there is anything Semien can't do there except maybe the defense and that's considering the learning curve Semien would have. We need to get younger so Semien at 2B and picking up a young position player for CF/LF/3B could really help along with Avisail Garcia in RF. I'd be more than willing to substitute Semien for Beckham at second. I doubt the Sox are ready to give up on Beckham yet, though. He's had a long leash on his mediocre hitting career.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 03:52 AM) In 2005, the lineup from 3 to 9 swung from their heels too. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as the players hit. I dont think Paulie has ever swung from his heels. It's a super easy home run stroke. Ditto AJP and Dye.These current Sox swing hard.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 02:15 AM) How's everyone feel about Saltalamacchia as a potential signing next year? How bout sending a Class AA pitcher to the Royals for their backup catcher, Kottaris, if we aren't going to sign AJ. He could platoon with Phegs. Kottaris will take a walk.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 03:10 AM) Only five players in all of MLB have more homers than Dunn this year, but let's call out his last three weeks. Pedro Alvarez is basically putting up the exact same numbers for Pittsburgh, they seem to be doing OK I respect your support of Dunn. We all have our favorite players. ... I've just seen way too much of him. If he's still on the team I can't see renewing my mlb.com. I just know what kind of offensive team we are going to have if he's still around. We already have too many guys who swing from their heels. Maybe if we get a real hitting coach and real manager (no offense, Robin, I loved you as a player) I'll give Dunn another chance, but ugh. Haven't most of you seen enough of Big Adam to last 3 lifetimes?
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 02:01 AM) He's one of the most prolific home run hitters of this era and can hit a 450 foot home run at any moment. That's fun to watch, what else is there to see with this awful team? To tell you the truth, I'd rather see any young guy (even if he's not ready) from our AA team take Dunn's at bats. I've just seen enough of Adam Dunn. I'm too lazy to look it up. How many home runs does he have the last 3 weeks? I could be mistaken I'm guessing 2-3 homers the past 3 weeks? I'm surprised nobody else is as upset as I am about that b.s. about his going the other way. I'd like to see a story now about how he hasn't gone the other way. Why has his philosophy changed since the last article? Uh, cause his philosophy never changed.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 12:02 AM) That would suck. Dunn is one of the few players who is fun to watch. At least he hits home runs. With all due respect, you enjoy watching him bat? He's the reason I turned the game off today. I can't take his ineptitude. Everybody talks about how he was willing to hit to leftfield for a week or so. He even got an article written about him. I watch an at bat today. It's a tie game first and second I believe and the first pitch is slop on the outside part of the plate. All he's got to do is poke it to left and we get a run. He swung through it. He's in my top five least favorite Sox of all time right now I'm afraid to say. The man defines our last place team. He has 31 homers or whatever and we still are steaming toward 95-100 losses. Does anybody else on here think Dunn is "fun to watch?" I won't start a poll on it, but fun to watch does not describe my feeling toward Mr. Whiff.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 08:40 PM) That double he hit last night over the center fielder's head really showed that he has decent pop. Maybe not a big homerun hitter, but I could see 15-20 with 40 doubles. Nice. Adam Dunn down to .219. Keep it going Adam and you can get back to the .199-.205 range which we so know and love from you. This team is addicted to losing. Wow it sucks.Wouldn't it be awesome if Dunn just retired? That'd be a helluva Christmas present for Sox fans.
-
LOL at Dunn. Yes, it really was Greg Walker's fault. What a bunch of crap that was. This team's hitting approach/results are sickening. Can't take it any more. No more of this game for me. I'm out.
-
Does Semien have any power? He seems to have a clue at the plate.
-
Who is Brian Anderson and is he a lousy hitter? It almost looked like he was trying to miss that last pitch he was so far from making contact.
-
Boy the Sox make outs quickly. I'd think this might be the inning Hector gets hit hard. Sox offense provides the pitchers no rest.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 07:19 AM) Wouldn't be smart stooping to his level. Don't need a Cold War like atmosphere. Yes but what do we get out of being nice to Russia? It's China and Korea that are the maniacs I think would lob a nuke at us if they get to that point.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 06:34 AM) Like I said, Putin pretty much sucks. He definitely mourns the collapse of the USSR and would probably love to see calamity befall the USA. His human rights record is putrid. I don't think that the sentiment that "American exceptionalism is dangerous" is wrong, though I just wish our government officials would blast Putin more. Today was a start in response to his moronic editorial. Kudos to those with the balls to blast this jerk, Putin.
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 12:42 AM) He is quite a turd, but there is a grain of truth in the op-ed (which he probably didn't write). Americans patting themselves on the back and saying they're the best people/country in the world is the type of belief that leads us into these conflicts. It also has other effects, but those aren't so relevant here. You won't find a country with a bigger inferiority complex than the USA (even though I wonder if England/UK would give us a run for their money) I took it more of an elitist criticism of people who are not in the government. I don't like Putin. He pretty much comes across as, "I hate the United States. I hate its people. I've been trying to bring the Cold War back 100 percent, maybe someday you Americans will notice someday." We owe those Russians nothing.

I actually wouldn't be against making Danks and Hector our lefty setup guys. It makes some sense when you think about it. I'm sick of trotting guys like Veal/Thornton/Boone Logan, et all, out there. How bout take one of our current arms and make him a reliable lefty reliever??

So this year the general consensus appears to be managers don't matter at all. OK, I'll remember that one as I follow baseball in the future. I assume that goes for coaches as well. So the only thing that matters is the GM, cause he assembles this talent that heads onto the field to play baseball. So my suggestion to Rick Hahn for next year. ... Position players for the roster 1B - Must acquire somebody (Paulie a bit too old). 2B - Must acquire somebody (Becks just can't hit; time to move on). SS - Lexi. 3B - Must acquire somebody (Gillaspie is not a MLB answer for any team; good sub though). LF - Must acquire somebody (Tank's hitting approach is reprehensible and Caufield/Fathom combo is better defensively). CF DeAza (I'll give him one more year I guess). RF - A. Garcia. Our only superstar in the making (if he decides he wants to be one). C - Must acquire somebody (Phegs is our backup, though). DH - Must acquire somebody. Dunn is kind of the poster boy for our lousy team, even though he has over 30 homers. Pitchers Go with the contingent we have, but go ahead and trade 2 of the starters in our system. Make the team motto, "our starters must go 7" next year, so the combo of Nate and Addison can finish almost all games. Turn one of our many lefties into a setup guy. Manager Ask Robin politely to enter the front office. Open the job up to all candidates and hire somebody that will make our great city proud. Comments?

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 04:51 AM) Viciedo in left field looks like the kids in the outfield at the home run derby. Please trade him. I think if Larussa wanted to manage again, he would have a spot waiting for him on the Angels bench. That is a great line. One of the Chicago writers should borrow it. That truly is Tank out in left field.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 04:47 AM) These 2 posts don't really coincide with each other....Francona is considered one of the nicer coaches in the league. Well, I'm assuming we can't get Francona. So given a choice I'd prefer a guy like Piniella/LaRussa who will get on the players.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 04:43 AM) And Viciedo drops a fly ball. I'm going to be surprised if he's on the roster next year. I would agree. The guy is lousy defensively and just does not show much promise as a big-league hitter. He runs into a pitch now and again and hits it a mile, but so far not really that often. I guess they could give him one more year but his approach is so lousy, I would not be upset if the Sox dump him on another team. I'd think he could be dealt in a change of scenery trade.
-
This is another of those games where you just wonder how nobody's been fired for these atrocities. Nice catch, Tank. My gosh a 15-year-old high school player coulda caught that fly ball.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Sep 13, 2013 -> 04:40 AM) 1. Francona said he was taking a year off. 2. I really doubt Lou or Larussa come out of retirement, if Tony wanted to keep coaching he'd still be in St Louis. 3. Lamont, meh. I'd rather have a coach who will be around for more than just a few years. 4. Guys I'd be interested in are Sandy Alomar, Dave Martinez, and for whatever reason, Eduardo Perez. Money talks, though. It would have been nice to get Francona in the organization. I bet if you pumped drinks into him he'd admit he could have this Sox team playing as well as the Indians 5-10 over .500.
-
That's just bad offensive baseball that half inning. Geez now I know why I've watched so few games the last 3 weeks.
-
Don't know why some of our guys like A. Garcia just don't try to make contact with two strikes. I know it doesn't matter down 14-2, but he was swinging for the fences there and whiffed.
