The danger is Jerry is resigned to losing after this season and not only keeps Robin and Manto but also spends no money this offseason. It's going to be hard to change this culture of losing. Sox can't even hold a lead like that? I think it's pretty obvious we have the worst team in baseball. If we could have a losers playoff series with Houston and Miami, I think we'd place third for sure.
-
That's what I get for assuming we can actually win a team against a Central Division team on the road. Can't believe the Sox lost that one.
-
I turned the game off in the eighth. It's impossible to blow that lead. That's what Hawk and Stoney get for acting like Sox will be way better next year.
-
I don't know why DeAza has to be the scapegoat. Viciedo has been just as rotten. I'm assuming addition by subtraction also meant dumping Gillaspie as a regular, dumping our catchers and dumping Beckham.
-
I would not be sad to see the Beckham era end.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 21, 2013 -> 04:29 AM) Verlander is declining and Fielder and Cabrera have about the least healthy frames possible. Those three combined are like what, $75M? Are any of those 3 projected to start sucking? Seems to me they are still in their primes. We can hope they start to stink but I wouldn't bank on it for a while. Also not to cheap shot Robin, but they have a pretty darn good, LaRussa-type manager.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 10:01 PM) I think it is amazing that he was even born alive thanks to modern medicine. He should have been dead a long time ago but thru our medical system he is alive. He even stated it himself, born 20 years earlier or perhaps in a different place, he wouldn't be here at all. It says he lost his coverage. Do we know why? No, I was going to email the writer to ask why he lost his coverage. I would think he could be on his parents' plan. I thought it said he might have been dropped. Can they just drop you? My guess is yes.

Massive overnight shooting at Southside Chicago park

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 10:36 PM) The murder rate in Chicago is down 50% over the last 2 decades. Interesting, but Chicago is the laughingstock of the country this week with reports it is the new MURDER CAPITAL of the f***ing USA. Disgraceful and the government leaders should all be shown the door. Get it fricking fixed!!!!!! Fire these bastards if they can't. Chicago used to be known for anything but MURDER nationally. It used to be regarded as the best of the big cities. A huge city with a true kind Midwestern feel. The capital of the Midwest! Now, folks, this great city is a national disgrace until it gets this MURDER problem fixed. Pisses me off to no end!!! -
If Robin wants to continue on, he better be willing to change some. If his team is a defensive joke again next season, his ass better be on the line. The guy wants to manage long-term? Well then ... he better not fail miserably again with a team that appeared to (on paper) have a chance at contending. He's blessed with some starting pitching, but his defense sucked and his hitting sucked. If he's dissatisfied with the direction of our hitting, then make the tough decision and get rid of Manto. If he's dissatisfied with the defense, then f***ing do something about it in the spring and GET IT FIXED. Ditto the baserunning. OK Robin, we have you another year. Or 2, 3, 4. I will not say we're stuck with you. But starting Opening Day you should be on the clock FOR IMPROVEMENT, SIR!!!

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 21, 2013 -> 03:14 AM) And hopefully we'll be ready to go once they start their expensive decline. I hate being negative ALL the time but I have to continue a bit longer ... how many years in a row did Atlanta make the playoffs? Detroit is going nowhere possibly for a long time. They are committed to spending lots of cash. Let's see if the Sox get that payroll back up there in an attempt to rebuild quickly thru free agency. I'm hoping but I also could see us pulling a Minnesota and going on the cheap. It's up to Jerry and how much he wants to see the Sox rally in his lifetime when his Bulls are looking pretty darn good.

There's absolutely no reason to bring Axe to spring training next year. None. I hope some people won big bucks on the gambling lock of the year.

Please read this column in the University of Kansas student newspaper about this poor kid who can't get coverage, finally has some sort of coverage, where he's at the mercy of the system to get treatment, which in his case is inadequate. We are barbaric in this country now. You read this and tell me what you think of our healthcare system. My god, we are NOT TAKING CARE OF OUR OWN PEOPLE. This kid can't get treatment. By Will Webber Sep. 19, 2013 0 Comments udkne.ws/15ExHLq I'm well aware at this point that the fiscally responsible thing for me to do is die. And I know now that when I was denied coverage by every health insurance company in the nation, it was for the benefit of the American taxpayers. I get sick a lot and it's really expensive to keep me alive. My name is Will and I was born with an immune deficiency. That means my body doesn't protect me from diseases. I was in and out of the hospital all through infancy, and my mom almost didn't graduate because she was taking care of me 24/7. Looking back, I'm really lucky just to be here. I could've died in the womb when my umbilical cord was wrapped around my neck, or possibly from any of my five bouts with pneumonia. But I'm here now and I can say with certainty that I would've been just another dead baby if I were born in a different decade. Nineteen years is a lot to be thankful for. I think all any of us ever wants is to go to bed each night with the knowledge that we'll wake up the next morning and everything will still be there. We want to look into our loved ones' eyes and be confident that they'll always feel the same way. We want to know that we'll be taken care of when everything collapses. That's all insurance is. And I had it, briefly. I had a treatment that worked for me. I didn't worry about going to the hospital again. I woke up in the morning and felt a little bit of control over my life, like I could get out of bed and take on the day. It's not like that now, since I lost my coverage. I set my alarm 30 minutes ahead of when I actually need to get out of bed so I have time to convince myself that it's worth it. It's not always an easy argument when the insurance companies send the message that I'm not worth keeping alive. They wouldn't cover me. And then they wouldn't cover my family if they were in any way linked to me. The only thing I'm allowed is student insurance, and even then, they refused to cover the weekly blood infusions that keep me functioning. I'm getting treated now, but it's on their terms. I honestly don't know what medicine is coursing through my IV from one week to the next. I don't know where I'll get it either – they can send me to a clinic or a hospital across town, regardless of where I am. They don't care when I get it – sometimes even a day's delay can shut my entire body down. I remember when the hospital was closed on the 4th of July, and I just sat on my blanket, praying for the fireworks to end so I could go home and pass out. I've lived the past year at the mercy of the insurance companies. They can do whatever they want with me, and I'll suffer the consequences, the bill and the side effects. I don't have control over any of it. I try to pretend I do, but I have constant reminders that I only wake up each morning because of modern medicine and the people who ration it. One of my lowest moments ended with me covered in tears and Cheerios – my limbs were trembling so severely that I couldn't grip my cereal bowl. That's not control. I wish just one time that my doctor would hesitate before telling me that I'll be like this forever. I wish that my parents never had to worry about outliving me. I wish I could talk about my future with my girlfriend without her voice wavering a little. I wish people would stop doing that little sympathetic double-nod when I tell them I'm gonna live to be 100, the same nod they give me when I say I want to be an anchor for CNN someday. But above all else, I wish people would stop thinking that an inconsequential amount of their tax dollars is in anyway more important than my life, or any other. I could die tomorrow and you might save a little bit on your premium. The taxes on your paycheck might round down a cent. But I don't plan on dying. I've made it this far largely because I'm 19 and my body is strong enough to take daily abuse, but mostly because I have the best support system in the world and my parents can spare thousands of dollars in medical expenses, time-consuming phone calls and arguments with insurance companies. But other people do the fiscally responsible thing and just die. The economy is in a bad place right now, but I think I'd rather be morally responsible instead. Massive overnight shooting at Southside Chicago park
greg775 replied to knightni's topic in The Filibuster
I have a feeling many cities, including Chicago, will soon be war zones with so many random killings. Life is not valued anymore. People will just bring machine guns to places or shot guns and just start firing. This incident is AWFUL. I'm sick of this s***. Why would anybody going to the high school game at Gately Stadium tonight feel confident they'll make it home alive?? I'm so sick of f***ing violence and can anybody dispute my prediction of the warzones in major cities in the future? It's going to keep GETTING WORSE. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 09:13 PM) My Yahoo app says -283. There is too much randomness in a single baseball game to go much higher. Wow, -283 is pretty darn high. I betcha it goes over -300 by game time. I wonder if any gambler will be the five innings, also bet the game and also bet the over. You could make a lot of money on this game but you'd have to put a lot down to make it worthwhile. I'd bet the over even with a good Detroit pitcher going.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 06:36 PM) You are paying him regardless. There is no one even remotely blocked by Adam Dunn. There is always the chance that he has value to someone later. And as you are fond of saying, it makes no difference for next year. Good post, especially since it is the only Greg haiku format. I used to post in this visual manner, but have stopped the last 2 years. Even though I despise Dunn, it is funny to look at this team on paper w/out him. Will we even have a guy hit more than 10 bombs next year? Crazy.
-
In all seriousness, tonight's game has to be one of the most lopsided gambling lines in history if Axe is starting. Is Detroit like -450?? Does anybody know the line?

QUOTE (oldsox @ Sep 20, 2013 -> 01:19 PM) I wish I knew if Sox have hit bottom yet. Miami probably has. Houston? Probably not. Cubs? I hope not. SI might have been over the top on the farm system, since Sox had several positive surprises this year (Semian, the Johnson boys. Beck, Goldberg, etc). Who's to say that a couple more might rise from the ashes in 2014. I wish the author would have put more blame on KW, but after re-reading it, he didn't have to. It's obvious. Konerko? I think he should retire. Dunn? That is one of Hahn's dilemmas -- what to do with him, but I hope he is gone, too. I would rather have Andy Wilkins at first base next year. It's amazing how the two architects of the 05 title, Kenny and Ozzie, predictably couldn't sustain it and flopped. Kind of like Ditka/Ryan. I guess we should be very very happy the Bulls sustained with Jordan, winning multi titles. And the Blackhawks more than one, with the future also looking bright. I happen to love Ozzie in the KW/Oz duo. A lot of you despise him and like KW, who I despise. Funny how that works. Both have the ultimate prize, but both also could be considered huge failures by others because of their lack of sustainability. I guess we should be just happy attendance is good enough to prevent anybody from hinting the Sox might move. The Sox may rise again. How long is anybody's guess.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 19, 2013 -> 03:13 PM) I'm sure people will be pleased to know that Rios is still not hustling down the line on routine plays, as seen last night on ESPN. Did they point it out? Did they boo him? What happened?
-
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Sep 19, 2013 -> 06:40 PM) Judging by the contract he signed, letting him go was 100% the correct decision. But if our slow pitchers helped cause the defensive woes ... and if the defensive woes caused us to lose 33 one-run games, hmmmm would he have been worth signing?

How do you people avoid butt dialing? I'm sick of looking down at my phone at 11 pm and it's dialing somebody who is asleep. Any solutions for me?

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Sep 19, 2013 -> 11:46 AM) I drive 11 hours a day. And yes I do enjoy it. That said the entire maintenance of our roads is a crooked scheme of lazy workers and graft to the naked eye. They don't bother hiding it. Who do you work for? How many times have you rec'd speeding tickets? Have you ever fallen asleep at the wheel? Do you ever do any extreme driving like those drivers on ice on TV? Give us some stories, please.

Not a bad theory. Nice post. Not be be accused of living in 2005, but I did tell you folks Mark Buehrle was a coach on the mound. He was a GREAT EXAMPLE for all our other starters. But noooo we let him and his fast, fast, did I say fricking FAST, manner of pitching go somewhere else.
-
So season ticket holders on here ... are you going to renew? This team stunk at home this year and has been playing unwatchable baseball (unless you love starting pitching and closing) for a long time now. Are you going to renew your tickets? What are you going to tell your sales person when he/she calls?
-
QUOTE (Soxfest @ Sep 18, 2013 -> 10:49 PM) 2-8 sounds good to me. 100 losses. Wow. One of the worst baseball teams in Chicago history. Wonder how long before we sniff contention again.

What's going to happen with the current government shutdown threats? Sounds like it will happen this time. I read "catastrophic consequences." I'm also pissed off in reading our Kansas legislature is one of the states that won't allow Obamacare to do its thing, won't allow the increase to Medicare or something. I can't believe how government doesn't work any more. The Repubs simply won't work with Obama and he has never been able to figure out what to do about it. I wish all people would vote and we could clean house of all these bastards.
