  1. i just read about Hiroki Kuroda - yank pitcher going back to japan to play there. this opens up a lot of interesting situation. is Scherzer up next in the yank agenda ????
  2. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Dec 27, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) [quote name='Dick Allen' date='Dec 26, 2014 -> The era of the yeller and screamers and guys the White Sox that would scream and yell, yelled, yelling will make them better, ways to hold players "accountable" you guys prolly don't spank your kids either. Most of these modern players are big spoiled crybabies and so rich they could care less. If I was manager, no facial hair, no jewelry, butch crew hair cut and if they don't like it they don't play. thanks, douglas i came to a point just now, i realize you really don't know what you are talking about. i know you said you are 68 and blah blah and blah..... is your last name guillen you know one of the kids ???
  3. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 27, 2014 -> 03:43 AM) Denorfia and Valencia were the guys I mentioned in the other thread like this. I'll stick to them. Maybe Alexi Ogando on the starter depth because of his flexibility. I think his agents would be wise to want to deal with a team like the Sox. real nice .... i like it, thinking outside the box so to speak.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 27, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) so I been wondering some stuff, like what is the meaning of life LOL NO but for reals like do flip people off with your thumb out or in? What's proper nomenclature in that situation QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 27, 2014 -> 06:53 AM) hi
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 09:29 PM) Tampa would be considering the possible draft compensation as well then, and Zobrist could very easily accept it too, which throws a wrench into potential future plans. He could also have a year where he begins breaking down and a qualifying offer makes a lot less sense. On Viciedo, he's a guy that makes sense in Tampa but not at his current price and they aren't going to give up anything of value for him. Sanburn has not thrown a pitch at AA yet and thus has little to no value. To even keep Tampa on the line, I think the bare minimum the Sox would have to offer would be along the lines of Viciedo, Montas, Hawkins, and approximately $4 million for Zobrist, and I think it'd be crazy if a team didn't offer more than that. The Cubs or Mets could offer up a couple of intriguing options and Tampa would have a hard time turning them down. Given that the Sox have stated they're pretty much up against their spending limit right now, I don't think adding $7.5 million to that is going to make things any easier along with giving up a ton of future pieces for a 34 year old rental. again, you do have a very good point. ref DV, by himself no, but for a cash strapped team offering 4 mil plus players may do the trick. Sanburn will add to their farm another arm, which they need, hell i even add Chris Beck in exchange for Montas. however that is my starting point. obviously we, as fans do not have the resources, especially me, to gage if i am talking thru my butt. hey i will catch you latter. peace.
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 08:35 PM) I was thinking Zobrist had an option for 2016, but still, Tampa wouldn't even counter that offer. Viciedo is virtually valueless, Sanchez is viewed as basically having the upside of a league average player, and Sanburn has such little value that he was traded for 1 month of Adam Dunn (which is not to say that he is untalented, just that he does not have a lot of value). Tampa is not giving you Zobrist plus a prospect for that. He may not cost Tim Anderson plus, as I was under the assumption that he was under contract for the next 2 years, so that's my fault, but it's still going to take a very good prospect - someone like a Tim Anderson, Frank Montas, or Tyler Danish - plus another prospect or two to acquire him. That does not seem like a good venture for the Sox. It just doesn't feel like the right move at this point for the Sox to make. in my crazy boring life, i was reading and thinking. i have been thinking of the Tpa and Wsh situation with there 1 yr expiring contract players. i know i am obsessed with the expiring contracts, but what a way to build up draft picks in the 1 round. DV is going to be much better than what they have now, by far, kick in 4 mil for his salary of offset the playroll, plus he can hit the ball hard to a tune of 20+ hrs. Tpa will get rid of Ben Z contract of 7.5 mill. Sanburn is a RP and Tpa needs help in the pitching depd. so let the front offices discuss the rest. as long the major farm players are not touch. all this for a rental. as of last wk both Wash and Tpa were trying to figure out the rest of the offseason will go. Wash is another interesting team i been thinking about as well.
  7. QUOTE (scs787 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 07:47 PM) I really think Robin is "Misunterstood" or his personality just doesn't show in interviews (it doesn't have to). I remember him either being on intential tall during the winter meetings and Millar called him sneaky funny...and then you have this... Then if you go look up (cant copy and paste link from youtube) his video of him mocking Piazza you can see that he's a fun dude, or at least he was. But ya all of that is really irrelevant. i really don't think that 99% of the posters here care if he is a great interviewer, or funny person on TV, as long as the Sox win.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 06:18 PM) I don't know that this is the best way to go about valuing a player. A few comparables for Chris Sale at this point are Mark Prior, Jaime Garcia, and Stephen Strasburg, along with a few guys who played before the 50s and a couple of whom were also born in the 19th century. All of those guys would have had highly variable values at each point of their careers. Right now, Ben Zobrist is a guy who plays good defense at a lot of positions, swings a good stick, hits for a bit of power, draws a lot of walks, doesn't strike out a ton, and helps you on the base paths. He's a very good player who does not put up very flashy numbers. All of the teams are aware of this. I will stand by saying that the bare minimum he will cost will be Tim Anderson and Frank Montas, and that's not something the Sox can afford at this point. and that is too high of a price to pay. i agree with you. now considering he is a 1 yr rental, Rays are looking to cut payroll, and needs players. this is my crazy idea. a pkg of DV + 4 mil, Sanchez, Sunburn for Ben Zob, plus a prospect in the low 16 range.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 06:49 PM) They can't do that. A minor league deal is only good through one year. After that, the team gets control of him like any other draftee or prospect, and gets to renew his minor league deal. very informative, thanks.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:57 PM) Yeah, but look at what they gave up for Samardzija. I might be the biggest fan of Semien on the site (there are a few of us who will cagefight over that title at some point), but he's ultimately a guy who scouts project to be a league average player, which is valuable but was also from a position of strength for the Sox. The rest is as follows: -a pitcher who projects as a back of the rotation starter or a middle reliever -a 1B who has yet to show any sort of significant in-game power -a catcher who was getting crowded out The Sox could legitimately have replacements for all 4 currently in the system (depending on how you view Semien's status). Beyond that, the Sox were going to have to find room on the 40-man roster for guys like Robertson and Cabrera too, and that would have involved them giving up on at least one of these guys anyways - probably Phegley - so to capitalize on some of that value actually works better for the Sox in this instance. I could see all of those guys having careers, and potentially long ones, but there isn't a super talented and/or can't miss prospect in that entire bunch. Tim Anderson, Carlos Rodon, and Frank Montas are super talented and/or can't miss prospects. The Sox can't afford to give up talent like that for a potential one year rental. With the talent the Sox have in house, they could absolutely afford to give up on good but still marginal talents in Bassitt, Ravelo, and Phegley without batting an eye, and given the Sox depth at SS/2B, they could afford to give up one of those guys too. Frankly, if you view Ynoa as a replacement for Bassitt within the system, you can cancel those two out and then it becomes Semein, Ravelo, and Phegley for Samardzija. That's a move you make every time too. man..... a lot of posters are giving great post today.... nice. >> another great post. but everyone in the world knew the sox was going to need another SP and the value of that went up, and up. the sox can walk away from Zob and it wouldn't hurt us, the sox will look for another option. the cost of supply and demand rules this.
  11. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 05:08 PM) I may be new here, but I ain't no whippersnapper and I ain't no troll. I started watching/listening to White Sox baseball when I was about 9 or 10yrs old and this Feb I will be 69yrs old. I seen every manager from the 50s to date and Ventura is one of the worse we have had. Yes, personality does count, and he has zero, you want the Sox to be front page of the funny papers? You gotta have a spokesman who commands attention. Remember Ditka? The best part of those years was watching him, he kept the team in the funnies. Most of you guys are still wet behind the ears compared to me, so please don't opine me that I don't know what I'm talking about. thanks, douglas i could care less if the sox don't make the front page. the only time i want the sox to be front page news is when the sox will win the ws ring.
  12. QUOTE (rowand's rowdies @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) Hahn has been filling every need we have one by one. On this 10 year anniversary of the Rowand's Rowdies and the World Series victory, who are your recommendations (via trade or FA) for these 3 glaring needs? I for one don't think we need a catching upgrade, at least not yet. Flowers/Brantley/Kottaras should be ok until the summer, then it can be addressed. We still need: 1) A RH platoon option at DH/1B for LaRoache. If LaRoache sits against LHP, which he should a lot, Abreu can move to DH, but we need a RH 1B then too. 2) A RH platoon option for Conor at 3B. 3) A RH SP Depth Addition We don't have much $ to spend (or maybe we do?). Any ideas? There's a lot of baseball knowledge in this community and plenty of us called Shark and LaRoache, let's see how we can do finishing this roster off for a big 2015. expiring contracts for 1 sp 2 uti 3 trade for a really young cat
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:39 PM) It is a minor league deal, so it is all payable in the first year. With the new signing rules, international players under 23 can't sign major league contracts anymore. with that, add the yrs of the contract spread evenly over the yrs so, what can that cost be??
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:26 PM) It is going to cost Tim Anderson (plus some) to get Zobrist and he's going to be 34 years old. Acquiring Zobrist would be an incredibly short-sighted move that really doesn't mesh well with what the Sox have been doing this offseason. I'd put the odds of the Sox acquiring Zobrist lower than the Sox acquiring Longoria, and the Rays aren't going to trade Longoria. The Sox probably have the talent necessary to acquire Zobrist, but it would destroy the top end talent in the minor league system, leave the Sox minor league system exactly where they were 2 years ago when Hahn took over, and the Sox still wouldn't be the favorites in the division, nevermind conceding all hope of re-signing Samardzija. It's just not a move that makes sense and I doubt the Sox have done anything other than a possible email or text. as you said and as many would say or think, heck yes that is a high price to pay. there is several things that might prevent that, Rays need to shed salary, and acquire more prospects. he is 34 and has an expiring contract. that in itself is or may be too much of a price for some.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) From the sounds of it, $50 million might be pretty low. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/...thin-two-weeks/ i didn't know that. thanks.... btw how many yrs is that contract for?
  16. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) I don't think trying to pinpoint whether people are trolls or not is really necessary. Douglas's point of view is one that is not unique among Sox fans (which isn't a bad thing!) as it seems quite a few of them really do dislike Robin as manager. I know we've had the discussion before but it's a slow point in the year and it's not a bad thing to discuss the merits of his management style. I personally don't feel he's worthy of being replaced but this is a big year. If the team comes out flat or they lose a lot of games, it's worth considering the idea of replacing him. I think the AL is a lot tougher than it's been in previous years and there isn't one team that I can pinpoint as being really bad anymore (though ultimately I think the Astros and Twins will end up fairly bad but not terrible, and I am not sleeping on either). Still, I think the team is going to play really well this year and will be in contention much of the year. that is a nice post. the point i have is with RV training on the job so to speak. the previous yrs was teaching on how to be a coach and more. the time of his classes is up. this team that the Sox have assemble is a great team. i just really hope he is up to the job of taking this team to the ultimate party. the party in Grant Park.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 03:07 PM) Let me put it this way. Let's say for some crazy reason the math works out that Moncada takes $50 million to get here, when bonus and taxes are included. $50 million to the White Sox is what we are going to pay Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Jose Abreu, Alexei Ramirez, David Robertson, and Adam LaRoche in 2015... combined. Does anyone really see them finding that kind of money, again, and spending it on a 19 year old Cuban prospect? If the White Sox had another $50 million to spend on the team in 2015, they would be looking at guys like Max Scherzer, not Yoan Moncada. ok, you convince me that was a bad idea. on a side note, do you really think 50 mil is the cost? let me ask this question, seeing Jose A now, what will you say his worth being???
  18. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:05 PM) I'll go with troll as well. Anyone that is 68 years old and thinks Ventura and aj are the problems/answers well..... hey be nice to us old farts.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 04:00 PM) So, he's an underpaid player worth more in "value" than Samardzija was, equally close to FA, he ought to cost more than JS. He wouldn't rise to the level of Rodon, but something built around Anderson + Montas might be plausible if the Rays like those guys. JS contract is in the hands of the sox brass. do i want him, JS signed, yeah but again at what cost, is he worth 30 mil per? its all between JS agent and the sox FO. my question of cost for Zobrist is twofold. 1. if the cost is doable and then yes get him. again the unknown cost is doable. 2. ok, if the cost is doable, get the expiring contract, try to sign him, if not give him a qualifying offer and get a 1 round draft pick. all i ask was a idea of what cost would it take on the sox to give up. edit.... btw, thanks for the question, i liked it.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 23, 2014 -> 11:02 PM) ChicagoSports ‏@ChicagoSports 8h8 hours ago #Blackhawks Kris Versteeg ranks fourth in the NHL with a plus-17 rating, via @ChrisKuc. http://trib.in/13Au233 i know, i was ready to chuck him off but wow, he has had a career rebound.
  21. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 05:23 AM) Seriously. The size of the offer Jimmy is going to get. Oh boy. He's so f***ing good. I can't. I just can't believe how lucky the Bulls got. Jimmy is a f***ing beast. the bull salary next yr is going to be crazy. first the bulls need to sign Bulter, then Noah and while they are at it, sign Tib's to a contract extension. now what to do with 2 #1 next yr. i am a little confuse on how the bulls go the Sac #1??
  22. QUOTE (kev211 @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 07:44 AM) Are the bulls the best team in the NBA when healthy? the bulls are on a roll. i hope it can continue.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 01:11 AM) Here is a surprising stat: In 2012, which was his last year at AAA, he had the following line, in 100 at bats: .283 .351 .414 .765 Maybe there is hope for him to figure it out, at the Big League Level. You guys know that I love his approach vs. RHP. I just remember the guy hanging out line drives all over the whole field, for most of the season. Until Dunn left, and Robin put him in the 4TH and 5TH spots in the order, he was terrific. His last 24 games were just brutal, and really messed up his season. He was on pace to be our second best hitter. Hahn and the scouts saw something in his approach that they really liked, and they have been vindicated. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being our second best hitter vs. RHP this year, as long as he hits in a suitable lineup spot. Although he won't hit the long ball much, he could continue to be a very good Average and OBP hitter, vs. RHP. i am a fan of his, i still think he got tired at the end of the season. to use those advance stats on players, i am sure one can use those stats on Jose A hitting as well and recommend other options. sometimes you can not manage a team but using those stats. there is not enuf roster space for players in every situation if 1 is dependent on those stats.
  24. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Dec 26, 2014 -> 01:04 PM) he sucks because of his personality, he's half dead. His post game interviews are boring and every other word is "you know". I hate to compare to the Cubs, but in the manager department the Sox lose. Ozzie was a personality and never boring, I'm 68yrs old been a sox fan my whole life and the Ozzie years were the best because the manager made it interesting and entertaining. The Cubs have had a lot of personalities, Leo, Don, Lou, Lee, and a couple more I can't think of right now. Hahn has made some great player moves this year, it was time to move on with the manager. a couple guys were available, the guy who manages the Indians and the guy who managed the Rays, and even the guy who managed the Twinkies. thanks, douglas so he is not what one would call a verbose speaker. he is a person whose job is to manage the team. he was not signed to be a game show host. i would gladly have a whole team who plays hard for him and win than to have a team whose manager is trying to compete with the players for tv time.
  25. QUOTE (hi8is @ Dec 25, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) Give me Zobrist or give me death! he would be a great addition i wonder what will be the cost?
