  1. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:58 PM) A lot of really dumb things have been said in this thread. it is even dumber if you are not stating your problem, only just to voice an opinion.
  2. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:58 PM) So they can be on base when abreu hits a bomb? What other mentality? Moving this runners over? Please! Damn straight OBP is key for a number 2 the #2 hitter is to provide hitting and moving the leadoff hitter over, and yeah it will be nice if he can get on base as well.
  3. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) If Ackley is the best major league player Seattle is willing to give up, I'd rather take a mid-level pitching prospect plus a lottery ticket arm, which provides some depth when the Sox make another trade for a starting LF that is actually good. that is if that is the best they are willing to offer. it is not like a lot of teams are knocking at the door for him.
  4. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:43 PM) Always try to maximize your return and I would rather have Ackley than a bullpen arm, especially since the Sox are trying to compete. The guy fills a ton of needs. and i am one of the biggest advocate of that. except for this time around. i rather get something usable for DV than nothing.
  5. QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) Dustin Ackley is Brent Lillibridge 2.0...no thanks unless he's a 4th OF'er. Tank for Carson Smith would be a pretty good deal for us but not sure if that would be asking for too much the point is not to ask for too much in order to get the deal done. Ackley is the player that will be needed to be move if sea takes DV
  6. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:32 PM) Ackley is similar to Viciedo, both failed to meet expectations (Viciedo's a failed prospect and Ackley was supposed to be the savior of the Mariners.) and a change of scenery could do both them justice. Ackley is a better defensive player than Viciedo, he's good on the base baths and he's a left handed bat and he allows the Sox to be as athletic as possible. He also strikes out 32 times less and hitting in the cell will be better than hitting in that cavern of a baseball park.
  7. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:22 PM) Bruce- Hi K, HI salary, low OBP, not good defensively, terrible year last year. Pass. last yr he was playing hurt.
  8. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:22 PM) Does anybody really need him? ahhh. if you really think about it, the question should be does anyone really need anything?
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:21 PM) Just for reference, I actually see a couple potentially major issues Caulfield left out (that's right, Caulfield's list was not long enough). But I will add a different set of edits. I think this is still a sub .500 team if we see the normal mix of "things going wrong and things going right". A big difference from last year though is that "if everything goes right, we actually have a shot to be really good". You can tell I'm not confident about everything going right and I think my biggest reason for thinking that has been made pretty clear, but I thought that was an important point to add to Caulfield's list. wow, that took alot of courage to add that. good job.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) On base percentage is not an advanced stat. another question, why have an OBP player if he is batting #2? the #2 hitters has a whole different set of mentality to think of.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 03:13 PM) On base percentage is not an advanced stat. i think this was referred toward me. oops. sorry. i was wrong. thanks for correcting me.
  12. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:24 PM) If we use anymore more of our assets for trade, it will be for a bat and not for a pitcher imo. Our starting 3 is very, very good with Sale, Shark, Q. Just need to sign some depth at that position. Rasmus comes to mind now even though I'm not a huge fan via FA. And Bruce would probably be my first option since Melky looks out of our price range. Rasmus, if the last case, i would kiss the devil himself for the sox to add that final piece. yeah i will deal with Rasmus and his father issue for 1 yr. next yr FA looks ok. if the sox does flip Danks, there is a hole in the SP slot.even with the idea of Rodon coming up. depending on the cost, 1 of Cincy SP will do nicely.
  13. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:43 PM) Not bad at all for a player at 28 with a career OPS of 790. Trade Viciedo to the Mariners for Maurer Or package Vicedo, Hawkins, Montas for Bruce. Would have to get rid of Danks though I think in order to acquire Bruce. cincy doesn't need DV.
  14. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:32 PM) Who cares about the media contest. The Sox need to win games in order to boost attendance. This has been discussed (ad nauseum) in countless threads. Even if you wanted to look at a media competition based on what the teams do in the off season, acquiring Jay Bruce doesn't compare to signing Jon Lester. If the Sox put together a winning team, more people will go to the games. It's that simple. the sox need to change the idea of the media darlings of the northside. in order to do that, the sox need to build a foundation of continue success. that will start of getting all the right pieces. if the sox go head to head with the northsiders, sox will loose in the media. even if the sox makes the playoff. build the team with players and players with a personality. getting Bruce will help in that area, help to win over the nah sayers, that the sox is a team that will compete for yrs to come. on the national level the sox have open the eyes of all, but the local side, there the base is, where the money from fans are, the sox need to gather all that in. positive publicity should be the goal from now on.
  15. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:45 PM) Again, his OBP is .300. He is not a viable option to lead off. He is also not a good enough outfielder to replace Eaton in CF, in the event of an injury to Eaton. umm i never said replacing Eaton in CF. i said replace him leading off. if one is looking for a player to meet the advance stats, all the time, nothing will be accomplish.
  16. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:38 PM) My question on the last line. Not real sold on him referring to being here long term (as of yet anyway) . Here's why. A couple of other ways to put a spin on what he said as far as "There is no more talk about where I'm going to end up or where I'm going to be.". Could that also mean that he is not referring to long term, but may be referring to the constant where-abouts that he may be playing THIS YEAR with all of the trade speculations and Sooooo many teams wanting him?. That's why i am not so sure that he was referring to long term as to the issues of the here and now is Finally over with. ORRR could it also be that now that the trade thing is done, that until free agency hits next year, that he doesn't want to talk aboiut it until then..............and thats why there will be no more talk about it. Thoughts? i was refraining from that thought. i was even afraid of mentioning it on another thread. but unless he gets a knockout deal, he will go fa rt. but next fa sp are pretty stack.
  17. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 02:15 PM) Lester signing with the Cubs shouldn't affect what the Sox do, but I'd like to see Jay Bruce on the Sox. I think the Sox would have to give up too much for him, though. I don't see a scenario where the Sox wouldn't have to give up Montas, Danish, or Anderson to get him. pls let me explain my statement. the team looks sweet now. but i am looking at the Chi media contest, the sox now made a great overall and add that last piece, the media will surely keeping looking at the Sox. Fan attendance, more ticket sales, more commercials, more press. that is where i am going with this.
  18. Now with Lester signing. Cincy may start their rebuild. Latos anyone? Leake?
  19. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) If this team is seriously going to compete, they cannot have a left fielder with little power and a .300 OBP. Ackley is not an upgrade. Next? but i like him for other reasons, which makes this an ideal trade. second to Bruce. he bats #2 and if injury to Eaton, will lead off.
  20. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 06:32 AM) Sanchez is a stud defender at 2b fromwhat we saw in his cameo and minor league reports. There's worse things than a 1 war defense first 2b especially given the teams revamped pitching staff. Sanchez and Johnson, i don't mind. let them decide in spring.
  21. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) Bruce would be my choice. I think he's far and away the best of that bunch. He probably wouldn't cost Anderson but would take 2 or 3 top prospects. Maybe Danish/Montas, and Thompson plus. with the signing of Lester, now i more incline to get Bruce, only if the sox don't loose Anderson and Montas. a package of Hawkins plus.
  22. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 09:45 AM) I don't understand this comment. i think he is implying the Bell is not developing the players right.
  23. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 08:24 AM) I already thought there was a somewhat decent chance he would resign with us, but after you hear the last 40 seconds or so in that interview, I am now CONFIDENT he will resign. For those who don't want to listen, check out this very telling quote...... "I'm just really excited for the future, to have a sound future, and to understand I'm set in a place. There is no more talk about where I'm going to end up or where I'm going to be." i am already excited about the sox future. even the signing of the Lester from the northsiders will not damper the sox trade and acquisitions. it is going to be an interesting media yr.
  24. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 06:19 AM) I simply think it's realistic to think that the Sox can compete in this division. In the playoffs, anything can happen, as we've seen. oh i think that the sox can and will compete, this trade will make Det to shell out the money for their FA pitcher. all the AL teams will have to take notice at the sox.
  25. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 04:45 AM) Well if you want to see an opinion that is as negative as possible about the team here it is. i don't necessary agree. if anything, this was a cold hard analysis of this team. looking or concentrating on real possibilities of what can go wrong. after last yr explosion, i would like to know what are the options to recover. that one item about loosing Bassitt is very true. (i like the trade) i am not going to look at this team thru rose colored glasses.
