  1. i am on lunch at work, while i was reading about the sox wanting Shark. this reminds me of when the sox had a chance of getting this young unproven pitcher from Sea. it came down to a final yes from JR. JR said no. now my cuz and friends were all for the trade. the pitchers Sea wanted where 4 and were in the minors. One was Richard Dotson. that pitcher was Randy Johnson. now i am not saying that Shark is going to be the next Randy Johnson. but the cost is still too much for this trade. Anderson, no freaking way.
  2. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 06:09 PM) Given the difference in what it would take to acquire each pitcher, why not Jon Niese over Jeff S? Yes, Jeff has a higher ceiling, but Niese is two years younger and under team control for 2-4 more years. Please don't say it's because he's a lefty. The best starters are the best starters. There is no such thing as too many lefties. some writer was saying that he has a shoulder problem. either way, the sox will do there due diligence. i will be very cautious of him.
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 05:34 PM) I honestly cannot remember the last time the Sox had a trade with the Marlins. At least not one significant enough for me to think that the Sox lost the deal ummm that i am wrong. but there was something, sorry.
  4. QUOTE (peppers312 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 04:43 PM) does anyone honestly believe that the White Sox payroll going into next season is going to be over $100M? better yet even $90M?! it is the stupid mentality of the sox brass. "lets see how the tickets success was last yr." the sox will spend according to what the profit level tells them which come from the main person, JR. of course the sox brass will not talk about the hidden money revenue that comes from the commercial side. an article over the weekend even said that sox owner JR has a need to field a winner. well they will need to increase that spending only a little more. i am not talking a payroll of the yanks, red sox or even the dodgers. look at last yr, Oak spend 90 mill.
  5. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 04:32 PM) Dan Hayes said that since the sox got Laroche to dh and split some time at first and the sox are wanting to upgrade left field with a likely LH bat that viciedo is odd man out. Said likely to deal him for a young bullpen arm. Viciedo did hit 21 home runs which is tied 25 in al and 46 in mlb. Still young enough someone would probably take him. Dunn only hit 22 home runs and we got a young pitcher back for him. to gamble on him or not, will he improve or not. these are all good questions that will not be answered by us, the fans. if we can predict the future but we can't. this is going to be the brass of the sox org. either way, damn if they do, damn if they don't. there is no right answer. something to think about. if there were clubs wanting his services, then why not a trade by now?
  6. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) 20 home runs is very hollow when the rest of your offense is so bad that you're still a below average LF and that's before even considering defense. Even worse is that the platoon splits he had earlier in his career are now gone. There was only a 10 point OPS difference between lefty and righty pitchers in 2014. I know it won't happen, but the Sox really ought to non-tender him if they haven't found a taker for him yet. yes i understand you are in favor on non tendering him, but those 10 points in the result of 250 at bats difference.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 10:51 AM) Or it might send a message that the White Sox are panicking a bit and deviating from their long-held financial philosophy in order to put a winner on the field this season. Throwing money at a player just to prove they have it when there's a bidding war or to simply "deliver a message" seldom or rarely works. If he's not the player they want at the price point they're comfortable with, then whatever short-term benefit they receive from the positive PR will quickly erode away in May or June if the team's not within hailing distance of first place. I disagree, if that player you throw the money at is like DV, then I agree. if that player is Melky, that is another statement. a player who is much better than DV.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) We know the amount will be roughly $4-4.5 million. We know he'd probably be the RH side of a DH platoon with LaRoche and insurance for any injuries at the corners like both Dayan and DeAza were last season when A. Garcia went down. We know the plan certainly isn't to make him the starting LF in a contending season unless a lot of other plans and options fall through. there is a lot of if that may not be answered. no matter, I really Emilio Bonifacio as the other platoon person. he hit lhp like crazy. last yr was a off yr, so he is a good gamble for a rebound, if not, a perfect partner for DV. on a side not, I can't remember why getting Delmon Young is a bad idea. any help will be appreciated.
  9. QUOTE (raBBit @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 04:48 AM) What makes you believe this? If Viciedo's value is so low that he can't be traded it wouldn't make sense that a team trying to contend would start him. no matter what, he has the power to hit mlb pitching to a tune of 21 hrs last yr. he may not provide much of anything else. it all depends on what he is projected to earn in the arb.
  10. If DV gets picked up, it will depends on what he is projected to earn in arb. the other thing, you can't have him starting against LHP. he is horrible. now it may help if Emilio Bonifacio is sign, esp if he is not wanting alot. his stats against LHP is decent and he will provide other options. there is also Semien.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 02:47 AM) They worked him there a tiny bit in the minors last year and I wouldn't be surprised to see him there a few times this year if they bring in a LH hitting OF, but we absolutely can't pencil him in as a starter there on a plausibly competitive team. Which of course, brings up the fact that this is decision week regarding what we're going to do with the corner OF on our roster. I forgot, isn't this week a decision is made with regards to final players and the waiver draft or something like that?? if it is, there should be some more players added.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2014 -> 02:36 AM) The problem is I think you're counting only one side of the ball and I think that Sanchez is right now a much better defender than Semien at 2b. With development and work, Semien could improve, but that is an issue. I think there's enough at bats for Semien moving around between 3b, DH, 2b, and maybe corner OF depending on who they bring in, and that might give him time to work on both the bat and the defense while we see if he can earn a permanent spot. That would take advantage of Sanchez being a better defender and give them both a chance to adapt to the big leagues. i have always thought that he might be the person to take over there, but i was reminded by posters that he hardly ever played there. nice conversation going btw.
  13. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 09:03 PM) YES I KNOW its ROSENTHAL. That's what i get for hitting POST TOPIC "BEFORE" reading everything through. Don't I get at least ONE "D-UH???""" I just love that pict of the old park.
  14. i was reading this article from the trib, about Shark. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...1129-story.html
  15. QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 08:20 PM) what is sleep? sleep is over rated.
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 06:43 PM) Topic title corrected. I repeat, topic title corrected. thanks, i didn't notice, but after 50 pages, did it needed it. I was fine.
  17. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 05:49 PM) Matt Joyce is 3rd year arbitration-eligible and can be a free agent after 2015. ok, my bad, 1 yr left on his contract.
  18. QUOTE (South Sider @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 05:42 PM) In certain situations, it can be okay, heh. Like a couple years ago when we were in the race and traded for Liriano. Deals like those seem to happen only during the season when it becomes clear where your team stands. Minny knew they were out, so they traded us Liriano. Sox knew they were out, so they traded Peavy to Boston. The offseason is so different, though. Minnesota, right now, has hopes of winning the division. Therefore it would be almost unfathomable to deal with the White Sox even if both teams improved from the deal. What I'm getting at, though, is that Boston has had it FAR too easy this offseason up to this point. They signed two of the biggest bats available. Forget the White Sox, why would any AL team be interested in helping the Red Sox acquire a good starting pitcher for Cespedes, someone that they want to get rid of? Boston should have to pay out the nose to trade for a good starting pitcher. Erik Johnson, Chris Beck. ummm do you that will get it done?? niccceeee use of college words. jk
  19. In Tampa, under the new GM, with his revamping the team, I if Matt Joyce will be a good pickup. last yr he had a down yr. he bats Lh, plays the outfield and is low cost. yeah he has 2 yrs on his contract.
  20. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 05:35 PM) Probably when he became one of the best pitchers in baseball. Since Red Sox fans are generally smug and unrealistic about their team. in all honestly yeah you are right, its like the Yanks of the late 80's and 90's. their fans can't imagine any players not wanting to play for them.
  21. QUOTE (South Sider @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 05:31 PM) Count me OUT if we're pretty much trading Alexei for Cespedes. I want an outfielder as much as the next guy, but not for our short stop. And not a guy like Cespedes. And certainly not to help an AL team like Boston get better. so much for trading with Minny, Det and Cle, uh.
  22. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 04:29 PM) Check out @Buster_ESPN's Tweet: https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/539012379867348992 Shark has the freshest arm out of any high priced free agent pitcher. I definitely cannot blame Hahn to be pursuing him. Not only does Samardzija get outs, he gets them out FAST! Get it done Hahn! We can worry about extensions after the deal. And us fans can always egg him on at Soxfest. He will sign an extension here... believe me. The dude grew up a big Sox fan. He wants to be close to home. He dislikes the new Cubs management, according to sources. Get it Done!!!! now you are talking about the dirty side of baseball >> the business side and money. how much money will it take to get the extension done. if the sox traded for him and without that extension. what leverage is there to sign a team friendly contract, a bunch a fans berating him.
  23. QUOTE (ptatc @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 03:36 PM) The proposed deals aren't emptying out the farm system. It's trading one of the best milb players, which is usually what it tales. you may be right, however none of us knows what the real players are in play to get the deal done or discuss.
  24. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 03:12 PM) And they'll save on Shark for 1 year. Where does that get us? Heck, they have money now to spend, but seem to be nowhere on FAs. They need a 3B, but they were nowhere on Pablo, despite the money to do so and he didn't exceed his projections. Melky? Not my cup of tea, but he can hit and he's there. Oh, I know - Upton for 1 year. Whoopee! If they want to do a real trade, go get Hammels. Heck, he'll only cost us 2 top prospects, which is better than 1 for the great Shark. Trade Alexei - he's not that great a player and teams will overpay for him. (the Sox are so sentimental, they don't want to do that). But no, they want shortcuts and stay on the cheap. I also get the sense that some in the Sox have convinced themselves that Shark is an ace - sort of like how they convinced themselves that VAsquez and Edwin Jackson were aces. If they want to shortcut it, spend real money. Sherzer and Lester are out there. They are much better than Shark. JR and Williams (presumably under JR's order) want to field a contender year after year a)with no farm system and b) with a $110 million budget. Not happening. I like it, nice reading. may not a agree with 100% of it, but pretty close. emptying the farm is like KW way of dealing with missing pieces. as you suggested, i still don't know why fans and on this example, the Sox brass has form an emotional attachment to Shark is beyond me.
  25. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 30, 2014 -> 01:43 PM) You're being ridiculous if you think Semien for Shark is too much and once again I'm a big fan of Marcus. The one thing people keep skipping over is the fact that Shark is basically going to make nothing this year(relative to top of the rotation starters) and still allows them to improve the team in other areas because they'd still have money to mess around with. that is, if he redo his contract and if i was Shark, i would redo it from next yr till the end of his new contract.
