  1. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 04:34 PM) Morrow would be an excellent signing. there is really some interesting names out there.
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 06:38 PM) I know this gets said around here a lot, but if the White Sox are selling at the deadline this year, there has been a lot that has gone wrong for this franchise. We should not be hoping for this outcome whatsoever. it was an unrealistic rtn for what the sox were trying to trade, or should i say the quality of the person being traded.
  3. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 04:58 PM) I think this is totally false. Hahn is very well respected. yah you are prob right, but that will not stop other teams from trying to take advantage of him.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 04:44 PM) And if Beane was willing to trade Donaldson for that reason, I'd have been willing to put together a better package than what he got if I were the White Sox GM. Everything in our system other than Rodon,Abreu,Sale, and Q would have been on the table. Hell, you might well have gotten me talking about Q. yeah, i bet he doesn't see as Hahn as a shrewd GM and will try to take advantage of him.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 04:41 PM) I would be shocked if they didn't bring in another cheap lefty, I just don't see them signing someone who makes a decent paycheck for the role. exactly and for me, 2016 fa RP does not impress me much.
  6. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 04:35 PM) There isn't low end free agents getting compensation picks. It's really only the high end free agents getting compensation picks. 12 players got qualifying offers in 2014 were Max Scherzer, Victor Martinez, Russell Martin, Francisco Liriano, Hanley Ramirez, Nelson Cruz, James Shields, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera, Ervin Santana, Michael Cuddyer, and Pablo Sandoval. Those are high end free agents. Only other free agents that are higher end didn't get the qualifying offer is either traded during the season or were on options and team/player declined them. you are very much right, but Lester is an elite pitcher. that is the selling point.
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) There's no reason for the A's to trade Samardzija if they're not getting a high level talent back. A team in competition this year should be willing to give up a top prospect in exchange for a season of a pitcher who put up 4 WAR last year. There's no reason for Beane to accept less than a high level talent. Certainly not as high as what he gave up to get Samardzija, but still a very high level guy. Of course, there was no reason for him to give up Donaldson for the weak haul he got, so maybe the White Sox could get a steal here and maybe that's why they were in this conversation in the first place, but "assuming Billy Beane doesn't make another silly move" seems like a reasonable standard from my POV. Beane will always try to keep a budget in line while at the same time get assets. they traded Donalson, and they got some interesting prospect in rtn. just maybe that was the best they could get. Beane does not like to let cobwebs grow. now on his next proposal, he want to continue to get assets. whether it is with the sox or someone else. last yr salary was 90 mil going into the playoff, he will try to prob address that again.
  8. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 04:17 PM) We don't even know if Tim Anderson's name has come up in talks with the A's. We have no idea if the price of Samardzija is Tim Anderson. If it is, the Sox won't be getting him. It's pretty simple. i believe there were news from the sports people suggesting it.
  9. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/roya...e-hochevar.html Royals re-signed Hochevar. I wanted the Sox to sign him. Damn. i agree with you, i was hoping as a last resort.
  10. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:58 PM) Buster Olney tweeted this the other day on ervin santana. Figure santana will be Turing 32 in December. Not surprisingly, Ervin Santana looking for as long of a deal as possible: Five years. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/539886337575616512 interesting, do you know what is salary demands??? also wanting and getting is two different things. btw, he will prob get it.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:55 PM) Wait, you're right, Lester would not receive compensation, forgot about him being traded. yeah maybe the first time i am right. but there are some interesting name on the waiver list. i also like a couple of the lower end of the sp. how bout Carlos Villanueva surround him with a nice team he might surprise alot of teams.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:52 PM) All of them require draft pick compensation, but compared to trading Anderson for Samardszija and then signing him to a 9 figure deal, all of those seem like better options. i am a little confuse, isn't Lester a comp pick??
  13. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:05 AM) Predicting some sort of buy-low option in the rotation. Sort of like the Paulino deal except with a guy who has actually had success (Morrow, Medlen, Beachy, etc.) there are some nice players who are available. with that, i think the sox brass will have a better idea of them and what the needs of the team are.
  14. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) Here's a relevant article that both argues that Markakis is way overrated at hs current asking price AND happens to mention that he's similar to De Aza in likely overall production: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-are-we...-nick-markakis/ nice reading. the problem i have is what are his salary demands. but to compare him offensively to DeAza is a little too much, and i like DeAza.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) Based purely on feeling, a long term deal to Shields will have a way worse pitcher at the end then Samarj. ok, i said i was not going to bring this up, but i have too. if the sox has to give up a group of major prospects, plus do a contract extension, i would sign Jon Lester. another option may be Ervin Santana. i would like to know what his terms would be.
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:30 PM) will he be ready in time to establish value? I thought i read both him and Beachy are looking at mid season returns from TJS at best yes, midseason.
  17. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) We've all been exploring lots of options to fill the hole in one corner outfield. The Dodgers still match up best for a trade with Sox. Having just acquired another outfielder, Chris Heisey, who is a true centerfielder, L. A. now has 7 outfielders, on their roster. They still need a SS, and consider Alexei a suitable candidate to fill that void. Therefore, I think that remains the most logical move. The question is: Which outfielder, and what terms, are most realistic and desirable? Although most of us would prefer one of the younger guys, such as Van Slyke, or even Pederson, someone like Ethier or Kemp is probably more realistic. So, we're back to salary relief included in a deal involving Alexei for Ethier or Kemp. Old "news" of course, but I just thought it was worth revisiting. i don't know about that. it all depends on how one might define how a team matches up. i like Oak and Cincy for prospects outside pitching who can help.
  18. the idea of giving full value for a player that expensive is too much for me. now if he is the missing part of the puzzle, maybe. that price too much for me to swallow. now, Cincy need to clear space and relief in salary, so they will need to entice the soxs. start enticing.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) Like I said before, the calculus for me is that the value of Tim Anderson or Marcus Semien, guys who have already made it to high levels in the minors >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the value of a 2nd round pick. 2nd round picks are nice, I wouldn't give them up flippantly, but a 2nd round pick who even winds up in a system's top 5 is pretty rare, let alone a 2nd round pick who makes the big leagues. The draft is that big of a gamble. We got really lucky with a guy who fell & was still singable last year, and even then he's years away from AAA. i totally agree, draft picks are a huge gamble. i can see the emotional attachment to the draft picks, b/c this system is soooo bare. the sox need prospects.
  20. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 12:35 PM) I wouldn't let a 2nd round draft pick deter me. I know Hahn says that but I don't agree with it. A 1st round pick would be a different story. it depends on several factors for me, if that was the missing piece and could not get the right player via FA, then yes.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 01:58 AM) Markakis has been better, but he's been extremely disappointing the last several years. De Aza has hit about as well as I'd expect, making him a decent player, but he's been extremely frustrating on defense with the bonehead plays. De Aza and Markakis for $4-$5 mil a year don't seem bad, and that's about what we paid De Aza last year, but man...paying them beyond that just doesn't seem to fit this roster. Of course, paying a worse outfielder $4.4 million seems equally crazy to me. don't get me wrong, you got a lot of good points. well see ya on the morrow.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:41 AM) Drops Mic. oh man that was freaking funny i do not watch Family Guy.
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:50 AM) There's 1 spot available right now and we're already removing people who I think could have contributed next year as much as these guys. I'd like to think we could do better with that open spot. maybe, i am not disputing you here, but before he got hurt, he was a real nice surprise. stash him on the IR until he is ready, a nice inexpensive element to use. the sox can still squeeze that 40 man roster a little more.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:47 AM) De Aza's OPS the last 2 years combined is .716. Markakis the last 2 years combined is .707. De Aza has outhit Markakis the last 2 years. So he comes so close to Markakis that he's passed him. lol ..... ok you got me there. dang i should have known i was missing something with the advance stats with yous guys. nice job. i still think he is better.
  25. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:42 AM) The question is whether anyone will offer them a major league deal. For us, that would require putting them on the 40 man and right now that's something I'd hesitate about a bit. If either are up for a minor league deal with a ST invite then they'll have their choice of teams to go to, and with our reputation we've got as good a chance as any. i know what you are saying, but lets look at this way, he has to be put on the 40 man roster for the waiver. just like Jones, after the allotted time, when Jones goes back on IR and if either one is not ready, then you attached them to the IR as well. there is room on the 40 list.
