    Kobe charged!!!

Way to go. Real nice public service.
  2. If you look at Williams game by game he's had a couple of horrendous outings. His best pitch is a nasty slider. He's been one of the few bright spots for the Pirates in recent years. I don't blame the Phillies for taking a chance on him.
  3. I have never known a time where pitchers didn't throw between starts. If todays pitchers are throwing more then why not make an adjustment? I'm not sure I go with the off speed theory either. I think with all the emphasis on radar guns the opposite may be the case. Another obsession I find counterproductive. If a pitcher can get hitters out I don't care what he registers on the radar gun. Nobody can explaing to me rationally why so many pitcher have arm problems today. Why pitching 200 innings in a season is considered a full load for a starter. Why everbody gets high blood pressure once the pitching count gets above 100. Gibson, Koufax, Seaver, Palmer on a pitch count? I don't remember it. Relievers used to be allowed to eat more innings too. Closers sometimes went 2 or 3 innings. Long guys sometimes 5 or more. Now everything is so specialized, teams carry 11 or 12 pitchers, taking a lot of strategy out of the hands of managers, especially AL managers who are already hampered by the DH. As for Prior, I hope he's ok. He's supposed to have the best pitching mechanics in MLB. I'm not trying present an "in your face" argument and hope I don't come across as such. I don't agree with the obsessions with pitch counts and radar guns and I don't like how managers have pigeonholed pitchers roles either. And like I said before, I'm baffled by the amount and severity of arm injuries in todays game.
  4. I guess you guys wouldn't like me as a manager. I think the obsession with pitch counts is anal to the maximum. I do find it curious that all these young pitchers come down with sore arms, torn rotator cuffs, torn labrums, tendonitis and on and on. I'm not that old. I remember when many of the stud pitchers would rack up 280-310 innings per season. Their arms didn't fall off. What's the matter with todays pitchers?
  5. He looks a whole sight better in CF than anybody we've got now.
  6. I want to talk about movies. Where's Brando?
  7. We saw him in the orange juice dome a couple of weeks back. I thought Huff, Baldelli and Crawford were good players. The D Rays, don't laugh might not be too bad in a couple of years. Baldelli can fly on the base paths and in center field. He looks to have a great future.

    Colon

He has a 5.86 ERA in his last 7 starts. He looks uninspired, like he wants to be somewhere else. If he turns things around great, but I don't expect him to do that or to be with us next year. A very overhyped pitcher IMO.
  9. I tried to verify this one way or another but was unable to. I don't think Rush was doing talk radio in the 1970's. When he worked at KQV Pittsburgh in that decade he did music and used the name Jeff Christy. You can like him or not. I don't like the American left but I'm not a dittohead. I tried hard to get on Rush's program to debate a certain economic issue with him. Never got the chance. I'm very suspicious of the quotes listed here, not to defend Rush as much as my desire for accuracy. Who the hell is Derrick Jackson anyway?
  10. I love the book Eight Men Out. That and Nelson Algrens short story Go! Go! Go! Forty Years Ago are to me the most important things written on the subject. This whole thing is a complex, multi faceted and very tragic affair. Weaver to me is not guilty. He came from Pennsylvania coal mine country at a time of vicious anti union activities. In his environment you just didn't rat on your friends, no matter what they did. I'm conflicted about Jackson. His actions on the field belie the fact that he threw the series. He got some big hits. I highly recommend the Algren story because it gets into the dynamics of the relationships between the players and the tough bullying nature of Swede Risberg who totally intimidated Jackson. Years later Hall of Fame catcher Ray Schalk told Chicago sports writer Bill Gleason that if not for the Black Sox there would have been no Yankees. One of the saddest things in life is to wonder what might have been. No Greek tragedy can match this affair for pathos. We feel its effects to this day.

    Kobe charged!!!

No kidding. Don't people have mothers, sisters, wives girlfriends? Doesn't anybody know somebody or have a female family member who was a victim of an assault? I don't know if Kobe is guilty of rape or not. Based on what I see so far I've got a real bad feeling about this. I do know he is guilty of being a cad at the very least. Why not be happy with the wealth, fame and very beautiful wife that you do have? I try not to ever get too mad over anything on a message board but the "b****" comments push my hot button.
  12. First thing in the morning this is what I see. What a drag. In December of 2000 someone stole my sons car from right in front of our place. He was home from college for the Christmas break. Merry Christmas. Auto theft rates in Pittsburgh are relatively high and not a big priority for the Pittsburgh Police. I used to work for them as a civilian but had lost my connection in that division. Another friend who works for the Allegheny County Police picked up the ball and he actually found the car and several others torched in the woods. They caught the guys who did it, two teen age accomplices, who were on a neighborhood rampage. When I went to court to testify, one of the punks and his lawyer actually tried to intimidate me and others testifying. I love the American system of justice. Unfortunately for the thiefs, they actually got stiff sentences in a maximum security juvenile facility. We were supposed to be notified when they were released, but never were. CW crimes like these have a less than 20% clearance rate. Maybe since you live in small town Michigan your local police have better luck in these matters. It's quite natural to be madder than a swarm of hornets. We got a decent insurance settlement and because of my police connection, an aggressive investigation. I hope you get the same results CW and I'm real sorry this happened to you. I'd like to know how this turns out.
  13. I stopped defending him late last year. He is as the British like to say "bloody awful".
  14. The only thing that's blown my mind is the lousy performance of this years White Sox team. Anybody here remember the old gong show? It's time to gong these guys. I think this is post number 1000 for me. I'd like a free hershey bar.
  15. Thanks HSC, that's might sportin' of you. Next trip to Chi I'd love to have a beer with you. I'm civilized, you don't have to hide your gold or loved ones. I'm a little outrageous at times but that's just my way of dealing with the problems of life. I like to laugh, even if it's at my own expense.
  16. Just a lame attempt by me to inject a little humor in a thread that got way too serious IMO. I love BBQ's and I'm sure you and Jim are great hosts. I wish I'd known you before I made our recent move. Could have used some advice. The price wasn't too bad but the logistics sucked big time and caused me a major headache.
  17. How do you get on the preferred guest list?? Seriously I think there is some degree of cliqueshness on most message boards. I don't spend as much time on these boards as some folks, but much more than I ever thought I would. Makes me wonder about myself.
  18. They are becoming more and more irrelevant by the day and they know it. The result is this type of nonsense.
  19. I did too. He started off pretty decent in Pittsburgh and then his production just nosedived. I thought the Pirates gave up on him too soon. I still think he can hit big league pitching.
  20. Jack McDowell is not even close to the second best pitcher in White Sox history. I wouldn't put him in the top ten. This is depressing.
  21. Dude, before i start, chill a little. Those older folks didnt do this on purpose. Now onto our agreeing. I think once you hit the age of lets say 71 or 72, you needed to be tested 5 or 6 times a year, to see if you are really capable of driving. I am being totally honest when i say i think the older generation causes more problems on the road than lets say teenagers. This is MY experience. Both groups are problem drivers but I think the teenagers actually have a higher accident rate.
  22. I believe in the version where he admitted in an interview that he didn't try his best to make some plays in the Series because it would help them win. here is the facts from several site telling the story of the fix FACT: Jackson was the star of the Series, he hit the only homerun, fielded flawlessly, batted .375 to lead all players, and his twelve hits set a World Series record that stood until Pepper Martin tied it years later. Joe accounted for 11 of the Sox 20 runs in the Series, he led players on BOTH teams. FACT: On the evening after the fifth game of the Series, one of Joe's teammates (Lefty Williams) came to his hotel room and offered him an envelope containing cash. Joe refused to accept it, an argument ensued and Joe left his own room. Lefty threw the envelope down and left. This version of the crucial event in Joe's case was attested to, under oath, by the only two men who were there: Joe Jackson and Lefty Williams. Their accounts agree, Joe did not take the money, it was dumped on him. It must be noted, Lefty Williams had nothing to gain by lying for Joe Jackson, therefore....logic leads us to believe his testimony is the truth. FACT: Sometime over the next few days Joe took the envelope containing the $5,000.00 that Lefty had left in his room and went to see Comiskey. He was told by Comiskey's secretary Harry Garbiner that Comiskey was busy and could not see him. Joe waited for an hour and still was told that Comiskey could not see him, so he went home. Hindsight is always 20-20 and we all know Joe should have gone to Lefty Williams and threw the cash back in his face, sadly we all know he didn't do this.....but we also know that he tried to do the right thing....to tell what he knew.....but Comiskey was in the process of a cover up....and wanted to keep Joe Jackson quiet......truth be known.....Comiskey was afraid Joe would run his mouth to the press. if jackson was guilty b/c of his knowledge then comiskey and reporter at the time gleason should be found guilty as well. FACT: Comiskey would not see Joe that morning, because he was in a secret meeting with two players hearing the story of the fix, however in reality, Comiskey already knew the story. Comiskey publicly proclaimed his commitment to "clean baseball", he privately spent the winter of 1919 and most of the 1920 season denying rumors about the 1919 Series and perpetrating a cover-up, in part to protect his valuable property, namely the guilty players. FACT: Of the players that Comiskey fed to the Grand Jury, Joe was the most problematic. He had been the only one to warn Comiskey before the Series began. If Joe told all he knew, Comiskey's self-proclaimed integrity would be impugned and he would be revealed as a hypocrite (which he was), or worse. so in all the sites i read, i did not see this suppose interview where he admitted that he was part of this fix. Great job.
