  1. Very sorry this fell by the wayside. You could email them to me. I'd be very interested in 1964-1967 and 1972,1977,1983. Now you know why I decided against trying to become a history teacher. [email protected]
  2. I'll be interested to see what happens in Philadelphia. Ever been there? They once beat up Santa Claus with snowballs, wonder what they'll do when Sammy steps up to the plate.
  3. One reason I remain a Christian (although admittedly not a very good one) is I like the ideas of forgiveness and redemption. Many old time southern politicians changed their stance on racial matters as they aged and the country changed. Only God knows if it was truly genuine and will judge accordingly. I recently moved to SC and I can tell you that they made a major big deal about Stroms passing. They cut Without a Trace in the middle of the show and did a half hour eulogy. In 1966 MLK said he never saw or experienced the hate he faced in Chicago when he organized and executed his open housing marches. Now Chicago has changed in a way I never thought possible at that time. There has been a sea change in attitudes about a number of things in my lifetime. I never had to purge myself of the residual racism affecting many because that is one thing my parents taught me well. We had all types of people over to the apt and visited them as well. On that they were way ahead of the curve, especially in 1950's Chicago. But I never embraced the hand wringing guilt that so many others refuse to give up. Old Strom was not, is not and never will be a big favorite of mine. His views in the 40's were that of his era, his part of the country, indeed maybe the entire country at the time. We've come a long way since then. Be happy for it and don't be so quick to heap the righteous indignation on.
  4. It said Koch might be "worn down" from all of last years work. A generation ago closers often worked over 100 innings. They also could be expected to go in anytime after the 7th inning to finish a game. These bigger stronger athletes of today seem to lack in stamina.
  5. The season for me has been a major disappointment. There is still time to salvage the season, but the next six games are big or as the modern day haircuts say "huge". Ask me after the next Twins series.

That is why I came here too and that's why stay even if I'm not one of the board favorites. The jerk who started this thread can say that he indirectly drove me off of MLB.com. I would hate to see this place become a haven for this type of mindless troll. We manage to argue our points of contention for the most part here without all the bad blood. At least that's my perception.

Not by me. You have a facility for subtlety and nuance that few possess. Even if I disagree with you on a particular point I feel that I have to bring what passes for my A game to the forum to debate you.
  8. Not that bad? Ok kid here is the scoop. There are 12 pitchers in the AL with 10 or more saves, of them this is where Koch ranks Saves 11th of 12 era 12th of 12 walks 12th of 12 K's 9th of 12 Losses 9th of 12 Hits 9th of 12 You want to tell me again how those numbers are "not that bad"? Logic and hard evidence will never trump emotion when someone has a fixed position.
  9. Can't he get some intensive coaching? The Sox have invested a lot in this guy, and I don't just mean bonus money. I'm on record as not being optimistic about his future, but I'd sure like to be proven wrong. The Sox have a pretty good tradition in CF, at least in my lifetime. I'd like to see some long term stability at that position.
  10. I warned folks about Jiminez since before the Sox got him. I got roasted somewhat, the Sox took him anyway and now you see the results. Our whole up the middle situation is bad except for Olivo. I'm old fashioned, I think you need to be strong up the middle to win ball games.
  11. He was never gone, just struggled briefly. Mark B is my boy and regardless of his endless flirtations with St Louis, I'll always love him and be a Mark B supporter. Mark's a finesse control type pitcher and doesn't have the margin of error that a flame thrower might. He just needed to make a few little adjustments. With any luck and good health he should be around and effective for a long time. Whatever happens I'll always be a fan of MB.
  12. I miss Wimpy. DJ has improved somewhat but I really liked listeing to the Hawk and the Wimperoo.

The two cases you mention are an example of why I think the traditional liberal vs conservative yelling and screaming is out of date. There is a side of what is alleged to be "conservatism" that I am uncomfortable with. Whatever your views in human sexuality it should not be the governments business what anyone does with another like minded adult in the privacy of their own home. There should be no government "Sex Police" breaking down the door to your bedroom. That's Orwellian. For those religious conservatives who are afraid, "gay marriage" is next, I say you're probably right. I would like to see the states have the power to make that choice however, I value the 9th and 10th amendments and think they are now largely ignored in favor of sweeping federal mandates and laws. As far as the Affirmative Action cases go I think the court was correct in striking down the U of Michigans de facto "quota" system for undergrads and that they blew the law school case big time. Discrimination is wrong, that's my view and it will never change. So, from where I sit the court got it right 2 out of 3 times. Many so called "conservatives" would say 1 out of 3. It depends on if you have a liberterian or authoritarian view of government. My belief is that governments should keep the sword in the sheath as much as possible.
  14. I forgave him for that because it was his first time out and Lou is a real pro. Trouble is, where's the improvement?
  15. Jenkins was a real fine pitcher, but he was one big reason the Cubs could never get over the hump between 69-73. He often blew up in real big games. Still with 7 20+ winning seasons and all he accomplished I have no quarrel with Jenkins in the HOF.
  16. His arm was gone. Apparently the Cubs didn't know when they traded for him.
  17. Rex if I came across overly argumentative sorry. You're right the Sox aren't on top of the world and I admit to having concerns about their moving or being contracted. There is nothing written in stone about Chicago always having 2 baseball teams. Your prospect reports are always a high priority for me on this site.

    sex is illegal

In many states it is illegal to do just about anything except your spouse in the missionary position. Everything else is a no no.

It's nice to know what a law abiding citizen I've been all these years.
  20. Other teams win the pennant Why O Why can't we?
  21. Take it up with Les Grobstein a local sports media celebrity in Chicago, who sometimes posts at WSI. Call Tony Kornheiser and verify if Gammons did or did not say that on his show. You wanted a link, you got it. Believe what you want, but you seem like a level headed person who checks things out, not dismissses them out of hand if they conflict with a current opinion. As far as the status thing goes, I say big deal. If Gammons has such a sterling reputation with the glitterrati of baseball then I for one don't share it. Most of the sports media of today with a few exceptions here and there completely underwhelm me.
  22. Does that mean I should jump off of a bridge?
  23. This is another example of why many Sox fans feel put down and put upon by the national media. Plus how could they make that kind of value judgement when the stats scream otherwise?
