  1. I was in fourth grade and the teacher wouldn't let us listen to the game on the radio like some other teachers in the school did. I rushed home, turned on the tv and saw we were up 11-0. Great! Only 3 more games to go. The Sox lost the WS in the second game when for some reason 3b coach Tony Cuccinello sent Sherm Lollar home on a double. Lollar was out by at least 20 feet. End of rally and Sox lose game 2 4-3. The reasons the Sox lost in no particular order. They just quit hitting. The Sox had gotten the timely hit all year. That suddenly stopped. They were something like 35-15 in one run games that year, because they got the big hit. Catcher John Roseboro would not let Sox speedsters run on the basepaths. Relief pitcher Larry Sherry came out of nowhere to pitch lights out baseball with two wins and two saves. He never did much after that IIRC. Last but not least Billy Pierce some how found his way into Mgr Al Lopez's doghouse and did not get one start. He pitched 4 scoreless innings in mop up relief. Early Wynn pitched game 6 on 2 days rest and got hammered. Lopez loved Wynn, even though he failed him in 54 with the Indians and in 59 with the Sox. After the Series I was depressed for a short time but figured the Sox would be back in the Fall Classic many times. Life can be tough.
  2. The White Sox were 94-60 not 84-60.
  3. Is that a NY thing or do all young drivers have to pay that much? That's legal robbery.

    bobby v!

Bobby V con man extraordinaire and master of disguises in the dugout. Big defender of Sammy in the recent "cork" controversy too. No thanks.
  5. I just posted what I thought was the best thing I've ever done here and somehow I erased it!!! I told you I'm the absolute worst typist going. Let me try again. I try real hard to view all posters as human beings and to remember at least a little bit about everyone here. Yes, we've had this discussion before and as new posters arrive who don't know the history of the site we'll have it again and again. Race is the proverbial achilles heel of American society. But like I said on another thread so many Americans are of mixed race heritage and with those numbers increasing exponentially every year some day soon race will be as irrelevant as it possibly be. What CW says is true but it is one side of the coin. The "race card" is played cynically by all sorts of people. That is what I find tiresome. Anybody who knows me knows that althought I'd hardly qualify as what goes for a "liberal" these days I could give two s***s what your race or ethnic status is. In any case, I wish JR would be a real owner and start by firing KW and JM. I think his own ego and stubborness is the main reason he doesn't followed by his loathing to pay people who no longer work for him. Race plays a minor factor here, but I think it is present nonetheless. If that makes me a bad guy so be it. Any way I hope everybody cools it and gets along. The Sox stink big time, the ship is sinking and JR isn't even rearranging the deck chairs.
  6. In NY the kind of incompetence the Mets have shown lately will only be tolerated so long. There are lots of diehard Mets fans in the NYC area that remember it was only 3 short years ago they were in the WS. They hate playing second fiddle to the Yanks as much as we do in Chicago to the cute adorable ones. They made their feelings known and the Mets responded. In the meantime we're stuck with the worst GM of all and a lifeless manager. If I was big on conspiracy theories I'd say JR was trying to kill his team.
  7. LMAO .... Great line. Alas, I am right there with you in the lack of hope department. I've been a Sox for as many of my 45 years that I can remember. It seems to be a lifetime curse. Many times I have asked my self why? Then I ask myself why not say the hell with it? But I taught my kids not to quit no matter what, so I've got to practice what I preach right?
  8. Gashwound is my favorite board name here. Leave well enough alone. Just MHO.
  9. This is the worst Sox loss of the year. Think of it. They were about to take two of three from the Giants after taking two out of three from the Dodgers. Slow steady progress. Something to build on with the Padres coming in to town next. Instead this. HSC is right, another season down the toilet. This franchise can't afford this kind of futility right now. I'm older, have been through this before and should know better and use better words but right now I'm very
  10. The White Sox started off badly and attendance was down everywhere as the country was in a real bad recession, the worst since the 1930's. Al Lopez loved Early Wynn so he lobbied Sox management to trade for him and OF Al Smith. Minnie Minoso went to Cleveland which was a drag since he missed the pennant winner of 59. Billy Pierce retired the first 26 Washington Senators on June 27, only to lose the perfect game as the final hitter, Ed Fitzgerald who hit a line drive that just eluded 1bman Ray Boone. I attended my first Sox games on Labor Day, got to see the Sox swept by Cleveland.

    Rock bottom

Work place romances can blow up on you. Many people meet at work and then live happily ever after. Unfortunately your story is the other side of the coin. Hang tough. You'll land on your feet. Don't let it throw you for a loop.
  12. It's different than I thought. Thanks for the info.
  13. I always wanted to go to Japan. Did you attend any baseball games there? I don't imagine the fans carry on there like they do in the states. Of course since I've never been there I wouldn't know.
  14. I remember a while back you said that you were reading 8 Men Out. Did you finish it? Jackson took money, that can't be denied. Whether or not he "threw" any games I doubt. Jackson and to a much greater extent Buck Weaver have my sympathies. Weaver just wouldn't rat out his teammates. Where he grew up (Pennsylvania coal mine country) that sort of thing would get you a severe beating or worse. Jackson was also greatly intimidated by SS Swede Risberg and Chick Gandil the main movers behind this tragic scheme. I'm not trying to make Jackson a saint, but the story is very multi-layered and complicated. Just for the record Shoeless Joe hit .375 the highest of any player on either team and drove in 6 runs to lead the Sox. He made no errors in the field. Weaver went 11 for 34 (.324) and also made no errors. Chick Gandil, Al Cicotte and Lefty Williams were the biggest villains on the field. You are right about this series changing history. Catcher Ray Schalk told long time Chicago sportswriter Bill Gleason in the 1950's that if it hadn't been for 1919 there would have been no Yankee dynasty. Don't know if that is completely true. I do know there would have been a hell of a lot more competition for them.
  15. That's OK, lots of people here don't recognize my name I'll bet. I'm just a low key under the radar type of guy I guess.
  16. I like your idea a lot, except for one thing. By contracting 4 you'd be down to 26 teams. I'd go for 28, with 2 leagues, each with two seven team divisions. Everything else you have in there is great IMO. Want to be commissioner?
  17. Wow! Illinois is in the tank these days. Cerb went to Texas I think so he may be incommunicado. It looks like a pretty strong field for the final 8 in the IHSA baseball AA tournament. La Grange, Chatham Glenwood, Mt Carmel, Crystal Lake and Rockford Boylan all look strong. Only one star?
  18. If Chicago loses the White Sox the city will not get another ML team soon if ever. Chicago is not the monster city and metro area it was when I was a kid. You know the LA area has 16 million people, about twice the Chicago total. Some have proposed a third major league team for the Riverside-San Bernadino area, the fastest growing counties in greater LA. Some baseball owners like Peter Angelos have stated that Chicago is no longer a viable two team market. The football Cardinals left the south side after the 59 season. They've yet to be replaced. The White Sox were ticketed for Milwaukee in the late 60's. MLB was going to move the team to Seattle in 76 to settle a lawsuit with that city until Bill Veeck came out of nowhere to buy the team again. This franchise has been on the edge too many times in its history. Before I get old I'd like to see them established as a premier ML franchise. In Chicago.
  19. Mario told the city of Pittsburgh that the Penguins have no future there without a new arena. Since the cityof Pittsburgh is about to declare bankruptcy and Allegheny County isn't in much better shape things aren't looking up for Penguin fans. They had the most dynamic, exciting, talented team in the NHL in the early and mid 90's. They should have won more than the 2 Cups they did.
  20. What have you done for me lately is the way it is in all forms of business today.
  21. The phraseology is pure alterity. It must be him. A gentleman and a scholar who tried to bring wit and sanity to a place that often lacked it. Alterity!!
  22. If I didn't edit myself it would be a real mess. My posts would read something like this 123@@%%^^$!!aglvlrmoPQ! I am the world's worst typist. I fixed it Josh, the Indians were swept by the NY Giants in the 1954 World Series. At least somebody noticed. You know I like reading this historical stuff. I was going to make a career change a while back and become a history teacher. Then I discovered how little interest most people take in the subject. The career change is still on hold. One of my favorite sayings in life, and I can't remember who said it, but "Those who do not learn from their history are doomed to repeat it" I believe the exact quote would be: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." The author was Spanish born American philospher Santayana. He is also the one who penned " There is no cure for and birth and death save to enjoy the interval." I have tried real hard to live this one but my favorite baseball team has made it very difficult at times.
