  1. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 12:29 PM) Man, you guys are tough. I've seen lots of students in that position and within reason I like to try to get them into a class even if they were the ones not planning their schedules right. I try to put myself in their position of having to put everything off by at least a semester if not a year -- a lot of grad schools still only start new students in the fall so if you miss it by a semester, you have to wait a whole year or find another school. I'm a big pushover that way I guess. But, go ahead and be hardasses about it. Just make sure the students don't know where you live. I imagine the older I get the more lax I'll get with this. But, since I just graduated, I can't imagine being so poor planning out the schedule. And most of the kids that have come to me with these complaints, well, let's just say they aren't grad school material.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 25, 2005 -> 07:50 AM) Is it poor planning or poor advising? I have seen more than once where bad advise from an adviser lead to these kind of problems. The UG advisors here are pretty good--at least for the psych major. All the kids get a checklist and a meeting when they declare, and a mtg/year after that. Plus the requirements are always on the web. No sympathy.
  3. QUOTE(soxman352000 @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 06:28 PM) My dad tld what a s*** hole its was back then, said it was all gang infested and the team sucked ass Well some things never change....
  4. Why do students think that, "I need this class to graduate" is a compelling reason to be let into a full course? Your poor schedule planning does NOT mean that I am going to reorganize my life--or break the rules.

    Spring Classes

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jan 24, 2005 -> 08:39 PM) For f***'s sake, my sociology class spent 40 minutes on "Do you know what a dependent variable is?" and it's a high 300 level class. After a semester of me teaching intro-lab, I was STILL correcting Dep/Ind variables on the final paper. Some kids NEVER get it. I'm taking Grad Stats II (sweeeeet), Language and Thought by analogy and similarities (or some other pretentious title), Sensation and Perception and I'm TBing (Teacher's b****) for an undergrad Perception class (not sweet). But my advisor and I are writing up our research from last term--and looking at new research areas. So that is HOTT.

    Films

I saw Whale Rider over the weekend. Really good movie. Highly recommended.
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 05:51 PM) They should have just used something catchy like "3 time defending division champs." That's their radio/tv campaign, iirc from living there. 'Back to back to back champions'
  8. QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) When the temperature drops below 20 degrees, salt doesn't really work. Damn. Well, then I wish they would plow....
  9. I don't know how much snow we got here (upstate NY), but it was enough to reach onto my car doors. And, I know that as an enviromentalist I shouldn't say this, but: FRIGGIN SALT PEOPLE! The roads are disgusting here, SALT THEM.
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 23, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) Probably the best site on the web C'mon, like anyone could even know that.
  11. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 11:50 AM) I have no opinion on the ad one way or another... But really how many translations of the Bible do we need. I mean it seems like the church keeps trying to periodically dumb down the message. I mean I can see not wanting to wade through the King James version but the New International Version reads just fine. Isn't it a sin to alter the bible by the way? *Hunts for Bible to look it up* If it is a sin then we should all be reading in Greek and Hebrew. (Just like the Koran should be read for religious reasons in Arabic.) The newer more scholarly translations ARE the ones that tend to make more pure translations (i.e. take out previous political phrases, fix mistranslations, and add some cultural context to verses so that they can be read in the original context with that meaning intact. Probably the closest to the original langauges/intentions is the NRSV version.
  12. Don't say that stuff outloud.
  13. QUOTE(Jake @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 11:09 PM) Someone please tell me what this is Maybe she was trying to get a vanilla shake?
  14. QUOTE(PoohIss @ Jan 22, 2005 -> 10:03 AM) If I remember correctly, Kerry believes in God as well. What's the difference? Kerry is a Mary-worshipping Catholic!
  15. So, just a how stupid am I thread. A few days ago I noticed a bump on my nose by my piercing. I asked my med student roommie what it was. She said it wasn't infected just a bump due to trauma. And that I could make it heal by putting hot salt water and chamomile on it. She said to make the water as hot as I could stand. So, I soaked it with hot salt water when I got home tonight. I think I have seriously burned my face. My skin is peeling off the side of my nose from where the water was!!!!So, now I have a tiny (non-noticable bump) and a half skinless nose. Anyone else have any self-inflicted stupid injuries?
  16. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 04:40 PM) Cuz you know when I think of cartoon characters that promote sexuality, I think of asexual sponges. You know my ex-boyfriend?
  17. Whose mom didn't sponsor sex parties?
  18. Wino, baby, this one is for you. It's not your dream, but close. Betty White Takes It Off for TV Movie NEW YORK - Actress Betty White — yes, that Betty White — goes flesh-toned for a scene in her new TV movie. During the filming of the Hallmark Channel original movie "Annie's Point," White, 83, and co-star Amy Davidson went bare, sort of, for a grandmother-granddaughter skinny-dipping scene. "We were not method acting," White said in a statement Friday. "We had little strapless bathing suits on. I mean, we can act like we're naked." But they couldn't act like they weren't cold. The non-heated pool caused both actresses' teeth to chatter during their scenes, which were shot at 2 a.m. "It was so cold! It was freezing," Davidson said. "I was scared to death for her. I'm like, `Get this woman out of the pool!' But the director was great because he did the scene as fast as we could." In "Annie's Point," White, best known for her role as Rose Nylund on television's "The Golden Girls," plays a grandmother who travels over 2,000 miles with her free-spirited granddaughter to spread her husband's ashes over a bluff. In case you want to turn away, the skinny-dipping scene occurs halfway through the movie, which premieres Saturday night.
  19. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 04:26 PM) Stupid people shouldn't be able to breed. So true. But unfortunately they seem to do it the most prodigiously...
  20. Geez, was this mom a chemist? Ritalin is pretty much baby-cocaine (same effect on 2 out of 3 neurotransmitters). I bet that the cocaine did calm the kid down. This kind of crappy parenting NEVER ceases to amaze me...
  21. QUOTE(Spiff @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) Well I assume you would have to be legally drunk for the consent to not be legal. But there aren't many rock solid ways of knowing whether someone was legally drunk at the time. True, I just wanted to point that out.
  22. QUOTE(Spiff @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 11:13 AM) And anyway if he did touch her like she says he did, who knows what she consented to but somehow can't remember. Maybe she was drunk, maybe it was GHB, who knows. Legally, you can't give consent when you're drunk.
  23. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 21, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) I think that was a woman claiming that she was his daughter and trying to extort $$ from him. I don't remember what the outcome was though. Yeah, that's what I was thinking of.
  24. Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't there something like this on him a few years ago? Or some other personal scandal?
  25. Speaking of Satan, Funny little cultural booboo.
