I fully agree--and I feel like the electoral college is rather archaic. I do think it would behoove a candidate to go to all the states anyway, especially in a dead heat like this race...Plus I think vote per vote might make people feel less apathy and more involved...

I totally understand that--that a more significant result doesn't necessarily mean that you have a bigger difference in the groups. But I believe that effect size is a good way to quantify how much they vary from each other. I don't know, that's just my take on that. But I do agree that stats has limited use here...But I think it would be very interesting to see the difference due to state size and population and electoral votes...

Yeah, but that wouldn't tell me if it was a systematic difference that might have occurred by chance, I guess I would run an ANOVA to see HOW different the two groups are, because my guess is it's pretty different...I would probably want to know effect size, power, and significance level--but then again, I'm a grad student and statistics owns me. I am a slave to stats....

And something else...When I made my decision to have sex in a relationship (or not) I can assure that my first thought was NOT cast back to my abstinance education (or the STI slide show *shudder*). MUCH more influence were my family and what they had taught me about sex, my friends, and my church's view...I think wanting or not wanting the school's to teach a certain thing about sex is really a wrong placing of the burden of sex education. We listen much more to people we care about to make big decisions in our lives, so I think that instilling values such as abstinance falls MUCH MORE into the private realm than the public/educational one...

Not directly proportionate according to this math--as one person in ND has 3x more electoral power than one person in Cali. A small difference but still...If I had all of the state's electoral votes and pops I could theoretically run an ANOVA to see if they mean vote per person vary according to state (with one group being low pop states and another group as high pop states). So, I'm working on a stupid take home test in my computational neuroscience class...My professor pretty much reads the textbook to us in class. And then she gives us this example to clear up confusion on these stupid Hopfield Model compution--but she messes up! So, we never learn it and she says to figure it out on our own...Then what does she put on the exam? The stupid modelling computation that she DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO DO! Incredibly frustrating. Anyone else have any awful stories? Or just want to vent?

Well, I think part of the problem with oral sex is that kids think that it IS abstinence. So they take NO measures to protect themselves from STIs in that situation. You CAN get an STI from oral sex and I think it's a big misconception that you can't.... I'm for teaching safe sex--but I do think abstinence is a viable option (difficult but viable) and should be taught too.

Hm, interesting. I don't know about MN--but judging from the Jesse Ventura episode of a few years ago, I would say people are probably standing out in the streets handing out free booze.

Pedestrians in the town of 40,000 called police, but the couple initially ignored police orders to stop. "The naked couple continued their passion-filled activity on the cold asphalt," a police spokesman said. "They finally followed police instructions to stop on the third warning." The spokesman said the two face a 100-euro ($125) fine each for disturbing the peace. Oh, those Germans!

Yeah, all through undergrad I voted in IL--but now I have to vote here. I was soooooo close to seeing if I could vote both places....But in the end my conscience won over voter fraud.

Right now I am still thinking of voting for Kerry/Edwards, but with the huge lead they have here (NY)--I am seriously considering voting my heart and going with Brown and the socialist ticket...
