QUOTE (Heads22 @ May 14, 2014 -> 05:59 PM) I hope that the same team that today was willing to eat $6 million on Jeff Keppinger is not afraid of spending in the draft. The question isn't if they are going to spend, it's how they are going to allocate. The sox will clearly go up right to their bonus cap. Maybe they would go over by less than 5% in the right circumstances.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 14, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) Freeland at 5 sure is interesting. He's got the stuff, command and the numbers. While the competition is not great in his conference, he was very solid in the Cape League. If the Sox are truly averse to drafting Kolek and he is the last of the Big 3 there, I wouldn't mind them drafting Freeland. I don't know if he would be willing to sign underslot though, but maybe you could get him for underslot and save enough money to draft Fedde if for some reason he dropped to the second round.

QUOTE (raBBit @ May 14, 2014 -> 12:07 AM) Turner's actually stopped his free fall. He's found the power stroke he supposedly lacked. His profile strikes me as an Elvis Andrus type if he all goes well. Dan Kirby @DanMKirby 12h NC State SS Trea Turner now has a .368/.489/.645 line over last 20 G w/ 7 2B, 3B, 4 HR, 18 BB, 11 SB. Heating up at right time. #MLBDraft I meant from when he was considered a legit top-five talent. But you're right, he has been much better of late. Eight HRs on the year has been a pleasant surprise.

QUOTE (lord chas @ May 13, 2014 -> 09:18 PM) People are sick of hearing Bernstein shove his daily agenda down their throats Bernstein needs someone who won't just parrot what he says like Boers. Lawrence Holmes goes right at Dan when he doesn't agree, he and Bernstein would be good together in my opinion. Boers just doesn't call Bernstein out when he should, Holmes does that.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 13, 2014 -> 09:13 PM) Bradley Zimmer, OF from San Francisco. Projected around the 10-15 area. Bradley Zimmer's Player Profile Hit / On-base – There is quite a bit of swing and miss to Zimmer’s game, but he has shown that he’s willing to work the count in his favor, though his on-base percentage is a bit skewed by being hit by 16 pitches over the year. Power – Right now Zimmer has only average raw power, but with his frame and his swing path I see the potential for above-average power, and potentially plus if everything is to go right. Speed – You don’t see very many 6-5 outfielders with plus speed, but Zimmer has it both in the outfield and on the bases. Glove – Zimmer has an absolute cannon of an arm (and has been clocked in the 90’s on the mound) and has the speed to play centerfield, but I think he profiles best as a right fielder at the next level, but a plus one. http://www.mymlbdraft.com/2014/mlb-draft-p.../Bradley-Zimmer So an athletic hitter with swing and miss issues. Give me a pitcher. Seem's like Joe Borchard with less power.

QUOTE (oldsox @ May 13, 2014 -> 09:10 PM) The more I think about the reasons not tomdraft the top three pitchers, I feel like the Sox will fool a lot of us and might actually take a position player. Who is the best college hitter available in the draft? A lot of people like CF Bradley Zimmer from San Francisco, but he has struck out 33 times in 205 at-bats. That's alarming for a college hitter. SS Trea Turner from NC State, but he has been dropping. Kyle Schwarber from IU? Overall, it's bad college class for hitters.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 13, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) Add Ferguson and O'Donnell to the signed list................Only Sutton and Fuller left...........Bears will have all there picks signed before most teams finalize a UFA invite final list. Stein the best in the NFL at his job at this rate they could be done by lunch Wednesday. It's not really that much of an accomplishment anymore. With the new rookie wage cap, pretty much all the salaries and rosters are pre-determined. It was more impressive a couple years back.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) I swear if Kolek is on the board and we pass for a next tier college arm, I will flip out. I dont' know what happens to Kolek but he is an extremely rare talent and we would be lucky to have a shot at drafting him (or really any of the top 3 guys to be frank). I honestly don't care who we take of the Big Three. But I just want take one of them. All three are the top-tier pitching prospects, all with major risk (as with any pitcher). Kolek, being a HS pitcher and the stress on the arm; Kolek, being a HS pitcher; and Rodon with all the pitches he has accumulated at NC State. I'd prefer Rodon because he more tape against top-level competition, but honestly, I would be happy with any of them. I just hope Kolek isn't there at No. 3 because I don't think the Sox will take him. And that would suck.

Danish doing his thing. 6 inn, 4 hits, 0 runs, 2 BBs and 3Ks. Most impressive stat, 10 groundouts and 0 fly balls.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 11, 2014 -> 10:14 AM) You'd expect Rodon and Freeland to have even more dominant IP/H ratios. Of course, it's even more difficult to assess high school pitchers. That is definitely a major concern. Stuff apparently checks out though. Could be playing behind a bad defense, too.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 11, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) This thread has just been depressing me lately. If Rodon and Aiken go 1-2, the Sox are in a tough spot. Apparently they don't want Kolek. If that's the case, I don't want the Beede's or Nola's of the world at #3 overall. I would either take Alex Jackson or draft Jeff Hoffman anyway if I could get him underslot. It's better value. Maybe I'm crazy. Kyle Freeland (6'4", 185 lbs. from Evansville) is still a guy to keep an eye on: 1.75 ERA, 87.2 innings, 72 hits, 7 BB, 111 Ks. 48-to-4 K-to-BB in the Cape League last year, too. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/gam...-kyle-freeland/

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 9, 2014 -> 04:52 PM) You could interpret that many ways. One being, he's a legit top pick and therefor whatever team takes him is bad. The other is, only a bad team thinks he's a good pick. Definitely. I viewed the latter.

An opinion of Kolek: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/anthon...p;vkey=news_mlb

Hawk can definitely get annoying at times, but there will always be a place in my heart for him. I disagree with a lot of his opinions, but he has definitely made White Sox watching experiences more enjoyable.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) Law's Top 100 Draft Prospect list is up. Insider. Top 5?
-
QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 8, 2014 -> 09:25 AM) I'd agree. Beede's stock is down. I think my preference for college pitchers past Rodon is between Freeland and Finnegan at this point in time. Yeah, if we don't take one of the big three somehow, I am all on board with Kyle Freeland. 106-7 K-to-BB ratio. Was terrific in the Cape League and can throw 92-95 mph with his fastball.
-
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 7, 2014 -> 01:28 PM) He's only a junior, so he can go back, but I would still consider drafting him late in hopes of signing him. He is not going to pitch next season though, so it would be in his best interest to leave now and get better medical treatment from ML teams.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ May 7, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) keithlaw @keithlaw 2m RHP Jeff Hoffman of @ECUBaseball will have Tommy John surgery next week. Had been a probable top 4 pick in the draft before injury. Wow. Ok well cross him off the list. Sucks for the Cubs, really. It was debatable if he was in the top tier with Rodon, Kolek and Aiken. Well, your Sox Draft pick is almost assuredly is now one of those three. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9845

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ May 7, 2014 -> 09:10 AM) Kylie's got Hoffman ranked #2. Interesting. Very interesting especially with the elbow concern. I guess he does not take that into consideration when ranking.

QUOTE (flavum @ May 6, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) Beck: 6.1 ip, 8 h, 3 er, 3 bb, 3 k Pretty meh season. I think it is safe to assume that he will be a No. 4 or 5-type starter at best. Maybe just a bullpen arm. Doesn't miss bats.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 5, 2014 -> 08:11 AM) I'd be good with Danish moving up relatively soon, but I think you need to be very careful with innings load. And you certainly don't need to be in a rush with him. The more I see video, and hear about some softer velocity numbers, the more concerned I am about Danish's ability to remain a starter. It is possible they are telling him to keep it dialed back, given this will be his first full season or pro ball, but it still concerns me when that means throwing 86-90 most of the time on his fastball. And his motion is so arm-heavy. Can he be a RH Buehrle? He doesn't have nearly the broad pitch set for that yet, nor does he have an easy, low-effort motion. I dunno, I think people may just be getting a little too exicted about him right now. Wendelken is struggling with being a starter, his velocity drops during games in a significant way, per a report from yesterday. Goldberg has already been moved back to the pen, likely making room for Montas. Wendelken may need to do the same if his arm can't handle starting innings. It's hard to not look at his numbers (this year and last year) and not get a little excited. But you are definitely right that we need to temper the expectations a bit. I think if Danish can turn out to be a guy like Derek Lowe, that would be great and probably is Danish's ceiling. I think he is more Lowe than Peavy. Peavy really had elite stuff early on in his career, which Danish does not seem to have. Lowe never really throw that hard he just had that dynamic sinker in the high 80s, low 90s that was a groundball machine. And he complimented the sinker with solid offerings.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) That article is full of s***. The Angels picked Randal Grichuk before they picked Mike Trout. Yes, I believe you know the story better than Ken Rosenthal.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2014 -> 09:52 AM) Because he was picked #29, and given a slot level bonus. If an organization was willing to bet their entire draft on him, shouldn't they have probably oh, I don't know, actually drafted the guy? Serious that it makes zero sense to speculate that an organization would be willing to bet a ridiculous amount on the guy when pretty much all of baseball actually passed once on the guy. That is just dumb because the actual reality doesn't support that at all. Because they didn't have to pay him more than slot? They Angels had him rated No. 2 in the Draft. If his agent wasn't asking for the moon, why would the Angels just give it to him? Clearly, the Angels thought he was worthy of a huge bonus (being No. 2 on their board and in high school), but if the agent was not asking for that bonus, why would the Angels offer it? Again you are saying an opinion and speculation is wrong. Remind me again how you acquired the title of world's smartest person?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2014 -> 09:44 AM) And not a single organization would have been willing to bet their entire draft on Mike Trout on draft day in 2009. How do we know that? That is just speculation from you. There were no bonus caps. If there were, maybe teams would. You are speculating that no organization would just as much as we are speculating than an organization might have.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 4, 2014 -> 09:43 AM) The Angels didn't do anything like you are talking about. At this point you are just making stuff up. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/how-los...lb-draft-051212 Yankees and Angels rated Trout as the No. 2 player in the Draft, FWIW.
