Sox "trying to get a return on investment"
And all these struggles come back to the farm system issue. While these guys suck, unfortunately we don't really have better options. Viciedo clearly is the one for Pierre. But Dunn? Nobody. Beckham? Nobody. Morel? Nobody. Lillibridge is playing great, but we are starting to see him exposed and he is clearly better as a super utility player. Teahen isn't good enough right now to start every day. We could bring a guy like Kuhn, but chances are he is going to do exactly what the Cubs' DJ LeMahieu is doing (.514 OPS). I only say that because they both had similar numbers in AA. We've been through the Dallas McPhereson already. There is no doubt that Beckham, Dunn, Morel and Pierre should not be starting in a Major League lineup for a team trying to win a division, but unfortunately they are the best options we have sans of course Noodle-arm.

My man crush Kevan Smith, 3-5.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 03:52 PM) Maggs, can you call up the postgame show just so we can hear Rongey say "you don't ph for someone with Dunn's pedigree?" I love that line. Sale's looked fantastic today, which is always something that warms my heart. Haha, if I was on the road like last Sunday, I definitely would. But alas, I want to put this game out of my mind as soon as it's over.

We have nine outs left at least. But seriously, Livan Hernandez should be crushed by an AL lineup.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 03:10 PM) I give all the credit in the world to these stats...but yeah, I've gotta dispute you a bit there. The B-R guys are very good. The world's best math people are a different level. Yeah, that was a little exaggerated, but they are very smart.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 03:06 PM) WAR to me is a boring card game that some people actually, foolishly play in Vegas. To play that game at a table in Vegas is taking your money and ripping it to shreds. Say what you will, but these are time-proven statistics created by some of the smartest math people in the world.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 03:04 PM) Beckham and Dunn just baffle me this season. Didn't Beckham add like 15 pounds muscle this off-season, too? He looks anorexic to me when he bats.

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 03:02 PM) Because I still haven't figured out how on Earth WAR is calculated. Maybe I'd respect it more if someone could explain the concept. ERA, to me, at least measures a concrete thing. http://www.fangraphs.com/library/index.php/misc/war/ Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is an attempt by the sabermetric community to summarize a player’s total contributions to their team in one statistic. You should always use more than one metric at a time when evaluating players, but WAR is pretty darn all-inclusive and provides a handy reference point. WAR basically looks at a player and asks the question, “If this player got injured and their team had to replace them with a minor leaguer or someone from their bench, how much value would the team be losing?” This value is expressed in a wins format, so we could say that Player X is worth 6.3 wins to their team while Player Y is only worth 3.5 wins. If you are curious.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 03:00 PM) At least those who don't like sabes don't have to be inundated with them. The traditional media and play by play and color announcers ignore sabermetrics like the plague. And for good reason, the average fan doesn't want to hear about WAR, wOBA, UZR and all these esoteric stats. It would bog down the broadcast big time and make it unwatchable for most fans.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 02:59 PM) ESPN has them. Yeah, Phil gets 5.24 per game. 33 in Major League Baseball. Danks is the lowest Sox pitcher at 4.21 (7th lowest in baseball). 113 eligible players for the run support statistic, btw.
-
Gamethread: 6/26/2011, 1:10 p.m.; Nationals @ White Sox
Where can I find pitcher's run support numbers? Looked on BR/Fangraphs and am coming up empty. Phillip has gotta be getting like three runs a game.

Why even hit-and-run against the Sox? Just straight up steal. They really bailed us out there.

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 02:49 PM) I hate those damn sabermetrics, I mean who cares about war and whatever, bill James never played and he's gotten rich on these stupid stats Who cares who they were invented by? They tell you a hell of a lot players. They are not an end-all-be-all, but stats in baseball are extremely meaningful.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 02:46 PM) It is pretty difficult to do what Dunn has done over this amount of AB's. This isn't a small sample size. This is almost a full half-season's worth of at bats. Add in the 2nd half of last year (which was bad) and that is a full season of being below-average. Add in the fact that he's not exactly young and I think you have plenty of reasons to call him a big bust. Could that change a year from now, absolutely, but I'm not about to give him the benefit of the doubt. I see a guy with a long swing and slow bat. That isn't exactly a recipe for success. It's truly a lose-lose situation with Dunn. You play him, he sucks. You bench him, you are benching $13 million a year. There is literally know way to win in this situation with Dunn.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 02:45 PM) For a 1B, he has no power. His OBP isn't that good. He's an adequate fielder and that's the only thing he does well. He's a gap power hitter playing 1B, which makes him very below average. At 0.4 WAR, Fangraphs says Loney is a very below-average first baseman.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 01:16 PM) The day I start listening to Rotoworld in terms of whether the Hawks are going to use Scott as the 4th/5th D-man is the day I shoot myself. Well the quotes about more ice time were directly from Bowman. Let's just hope it is posturing and all.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 01:02 PM) To be honest, I don't really like Morel, as a baseball player, of course. But yeah, Ozzie is death to young players. I agree. I have been really disappointed this year by his plate discipline and lack of power, but he has one his best games of the year and then gets the bench. Quite an incentive to perform well.

Danks to DL, Sox call up Hector Santiago
QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 01:00 PM) I guess Tony Pena will be activated from the DL tomorrow and Santiago will head back to B'ham. What about Infante? Pena is awful. 5.10 ERA last year (1.52 WHIP) and 6.20 ERA (1.72 WHIP) this year. The guy is just not good.

Danks to DL, Sox call up Hector Santiago
QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 12:37 PM) With the addition of Santiago, the Sox 40-man now sits at 38. Oh he wasn't on the 40? Maybe they won't be sending him down after the game.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 12:21 PM) It has to be someone who can pitch multiple innings today. Yeah, I would imagine he will be sent down following the game.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 08:19 AM) I will give credit to Ozzie for putting Morel at the #2 spot in the lineup this week. I think it's working. Brent goes out and has a 3-4 game, and gets to ride the pine today. Great.

2011-2012 NHL Thread
From Rotoworld via the Sun-Times Where do I barf? Scott had nothing last year, absolutely nothing. It is not a stretch to say he was the least talented NHL player in 2011. He's fine I suppose as your 7th defenseman, but under no situation should he see more playing time.
