Because theoretically with the White Sox he'd get the best of both worlds, he'd have a long term guarantee if for whatever reason the market crashes for him (injury, he suddenly sucks, etc...) but if he continues to be great and the CBA remedies whatever is depressing the market he can opt out and be a free agent again or, if all is going well here, have the Sox re-do the backend of his deal. The advantage to the Sox would be to get him signed, not necessarily keep him long-term.

If Sox wanted to get it done ASAP, they likely would have had to offer very close to the 300+ Manny was looking for, outside of that, there was no reason for him to take any offer right away, even if it's close to what he ends up getting.

Who the hell knows what's going on, but it's possible Sox got mad at Lozano thinking he leaked it to goose other teams and they're the only ones seriously at the table, so he's doing this to soothe them. Again, I have no idea, but a possible spin.

For a starting bid? Nobody has reported any other team has made an offer. At this point, why would the Sox come off it? It's all patchwork, but if Manny and team are at something like 10/325 and Sox had some bid at some point of 7/175, wouldn't 8/260 or so be a reasonable compromise and a very likely number the Sox have as their top bid eventually? Nobody in the market seems to be pushing them to that yet, though.

If Sox are the only one making an offer, they can make whatever comparison they want for their initial offer and surely can change it if there's another strong bidder, which, doesn't appear to be the case right now.

Who knows what the offer was or what ongoing discussions involve, but this wasn't/isn't a sealed bid auction for Manny. Why would you ever front your best offer, it's not like if Phillies or another team offered him 8/200 he wouldn't have ongoing discussions with other interested clubs.

Why? What are his other offers? If Phillies offer was so great why hasn't he signed with them, or a mystery team?

At this point, again, someone can come out of nowhere, I'm not sure who is going to give him that. I guess the only possibility is Nats cave and give Harper what he wants and Phillies give Manny 325.

Isn't that what the Nationals did with Werth? I think everyone acknowledged it was an overpay at the time.

Right, a formal offer is one that Harper can sign the second it comes over, meaning those aren't made, especially for a 300-400mm 10 or so year deal, until you're 100% ready for it to be signed.

That doesn't mean offers haven't been discussed, which I'm sure they have been.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't a joke as he didn't do Jambaroo last Thursday, or anything since Wednesday and he didn't tweet all weekend, which is rare for him. He normally says when he's taking a trip or on assignment. I actually googled him yesterday to see if there was news or he signed with another company. Yes, as you note, with twitter comments of his colleagues this actually seems really serious. Hoping he's OK!

With the amount of money they can get for franchise fees, my best guess is if there's new locations they will be expansion, not anyone moving.
