I agree that Ozuna's only useful attribute to us is his speed. And I don't think we should underestimate that. With the exception of Pods, our lineup is filled with guys with decent to below-average speed. If he's kept on the team simply to steal a base in the late innings, I think he warrants a spot. Just adds another dimension to the bench.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 04:54 PM) On a separate note, I like the trade. But Ozuna and Cintron seem like the same player, with a huge offensive edge to Cintron. This is odd. I'm interested in seeing the what happens. Ozuna is a lot faster than Cintron, and my guess is he'll be sticking around...mostly as a pinch-runner. Just a hunch.

Preseason Baseball-White Sox v. Angels Game Thread
KevHead0881 replied to bjm676's topic in 2006 Season in Review
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 04:50 PM) so at this point, we could easily make the final lineup. Borch with the final OF spot. Lopez with the Loogy role. Roster set. Lets go. I'd say its pretty much set. They seem pretty set on Borchard being the final outfielder, and it appears that Lopez has all but cinched his spot. Nice luxury to have the roster set...with a little more than 3 weeks left till the season starts. I think we now keep our fingers crossed for everybody to stay healthy. -
White Sox Acquire Infielder Alex Cintron

QUOTE(easyw @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 01:38 PM) Here's a thought - KW is looking ahead to the trade deadline. I agree that this trade doesn't make any sense give the current roster. The Sox need relief pitching, not more back-ups. Ozuna and Mack can both play on the left side of the infield. But Mack prefers RF and Ozuna can play just about anywhere. So... Maybe, if Mack does well enough, mid-season, you put Dye on the block for some middle relief help. Or Sweeney goes back to Charlotte. Dye will underperform this year, if he doesn't injure himself first. First of all, Ozuna is better suited as a possible pinch hitter and most often a pinch runner. He's not good enough in the field to be a primary infield backup. Mackowiak will spend most of his time backing up the outfield positions (fitting, since he's naturally an outfielder). So it makes sense to have Cintron as your primary infield backup, spelling Crede, Uribe and Gooch. Not to mention that he probably becomes our second best bat on the bench. I think Cintron will fit in quite well. As far as filling up the bullpen, when you find that quality left-handed reliever they are looking for, please call Kenny. Finally, not sure how you come to your conclusion on Jermaine Dye. Throughout his career, when he's healthy, he has produced. And most of his injuries are freak injuries anyway (i.e. hitting the ball off your kneecap). I'm not sure why an injury would be so likely. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 01:04 PM) I couldnt disagree with you more. Gload plays no OF, not on this team. As far as pinch hitters go, before I would send up either one of these guys, I would send up Mack, Cintron and Ozuna. So if their role is mainly an OF fill in, you have to choose the player who can actually play the OF, that is joe. Like I said, I don't think much of Gload. I just think that little of Borchard. I guess saying that Gload should be a lock was too strong. Ultimately, if we are just looking for somebody to fill the defensive need in the OF, I'd prefer we find somebody else all together. Either way, we got a strong bench regardless, especially with Cintron aboard. I ain't gonna make a big stink over the 5th OF spot.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 11:27 AM) Why should Gload be a lock? The guy had no position on defense. He plays 1B, we already have 2 guys who can play that position. We need a backup OF'er who can play defense. The only option is Borchard. Well, first of all, Gload can play a little outfield. Not very well, but Borchard is nothing special out there either. And at the very least, Gload has a resemblence of a major league hitter, something I can't say for Borchard. The only way a guy like Borchard will have any success offensively is if he's playing almost everyday. And since we're talking about the 5th outfielder spot, Borchard's probably won't see a ton of action. Believe me, I'm not the biggest Gload fan around here. But as a pinch hitter and an occasional corner outfielder, he'll be serviceable.
-
QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) Gload is never a lock on this team it seems. Nor should he be. He's pretty bad. EDIT: Oops. I misread it. Thought you were talking about Borchard. Gload should be a lock.

I'm kind of ignorant when it comes to the minor leagues, so somebody fill me in: What do you guys think about this Valido kid?

I didn't read this article as a criticism of Moneyball, but more a criticism of sabermetrics in general. I agree with Chitownsportsfan that this article inaccurately uses Moneyball as the philosophy in question. If you read the quotes from Kenny, he's questioning the statistical analysis of sabermetrics, not the entire book of Moneyball. With that being said, I agree with the core or Kenny's argument that measuring simply by statistics can be misleading. While I don't disagree with many of the principles of sabermetrics, I question those who use it religiously as a way to build a team. I'm not saying Beane does that, but some think that way. In the end, and the article alludes to this, I think Beane and KW have many similarities as to what they think makes a successful team: Strong pitching, good defense, quality situational hitting. This is the reason the A's have continued to have success, and a big reason we won it all last year.

Sox vs. Diamondbacks (3/4, 1:05 P.M. CT)
KevHead0881 replied to SSH2005's topic in 2006 Season in Review
I'm about a week (maybe 2) from being concerned. The amount of stock I put into spring training performances isn't much. I wouldn't think much of this game if we were winning 11-0. -

Check out old man Withers behind the plate. -
You want Timo, you got 'em. Newcomer Perez plays waiting game

"There are a whole bunch of idiots in this thread."

Nobody got hurt = a successful day of Spring Training baseball...at least in my world.

QUOTE(yuri @ Mar 1, 2006 -> 01:35 AM) Wow, what a bunch of babies! Kenny and Ozzie! Frank has handled himself just fine. Has he complained a little? Sure, but after what he's done over the years, he has every right to. Nice to know that the White Soxs' run won't last very long with a couple of children running the show. But it was a damn good post.
-
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 1, 2006 -> 03:16 PM) You are joking right? Just to be sure. I'm already keeping an eye out for those who need to be lectured that "it's only spring training".

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Mar 1, 2006 -> 12:02 PM) How about f*** that. You only live once, and he may never have another opportunity to receive a World Series Championship ring in front of adoring fans. If he does show up, he will get the loudest ovation out of anyone! I agree with ya. If it were me, I'd be there. But I'm not Aaron. And if he decided that it would be best to not attend, I wouldn't have a problem with it and would understand why he made that decision. But, if I were a betting man, I'd say he'll be there.
-
QUOTE(Cuck the Fubs @ Mar 1, 2006 -> 11:52 AM) Also, are players like Minoso, Aparcio, etc. going to get rings, like the Red Sox did with Buckner and Fisk I guess its entirely up to the organization. Not sure, but I think those still involved in the organization will get a ring (Minoso, Pierce, Kittle, etc).
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Mar 1, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) Well the invite better be extended anyway. He's the best player ever to put on the uniform. He also better be getting a statue if guys like Fisk got one. He'll get his statue. He'll also get his number retired. It won't happen until Frank retires (another 4 to 5 years from now, according to Frank), and it probably won't happen for a few years after that. But things will die down, and just like Fisk was welcomed back, so will Frank. You can count on it.
-
It would look good, at least from a PR standpoint if they extended an invite. But even if they did, Frank ain't gonna be there.
-
I know Lowe attended the Red Sox ring ceremony. I also remember him getting a lot of flack from the LA media about it. I think alot of it had to do with him wearing a Red Sox jersey to the thing. Not sure if Aaron would do it, but Philly fans and media were giving him s*** for simply going to a Bears game. He might not want to subject himself to the scrutiny. It would be awesome if he was there though.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 1, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) There's only two to choose from, haha. MLB The Show which is only on PS2 and MLB 2K6 which is the only MLB licensed game on every console. Well, I guess that makes my choices easier. MLB 2K6 better not suck!
