QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 11:15 AM) I respect your oppinion but i disagree. Keep Jon G and sign a free agent pitcher in the '06 offseason to replace him. Fine strategy and all, but think about how much a free agent of Jon Garland's caliber would cost. And then realize that if we want to pick up a free agent pitcher that will fit in our price range, it will most likely be a pitcher far inferior to Garland. Sounds way too risky.

QUOTE(shawnhillegas @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 10:49 AM) this was hinted at before but what gives this article no credibility is the outfield depth comment. the cubs have jeremy burnitz (not yet signed) and an AFL left field prospect as their corner outfielders, and our 7th best outfielder (borchard) is probably the equivalent of burnitz 1. dye 2. pods 3. anderson 4. mak 5. owens 6. young 7. borchard. Ummm...I hope you're exaggerating, cause if Borchard was anywhere near as good as Burnitz, he'd have found a big league home by now.

QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Dec 13, 2005 -> 09:22 AM) Well, the other point here is that Philadelphia wouldn't have taken Posednik over Rowand. They have different skill sets to be sure, but Rowand's potential is still more valuable than Posednik, who basically has maxed out. I actually think they both have maxed out. I really don't see Rowand having a better year or even duplicating what he did in '04. He'll continue to be a good player and will fit in nicely in Philly, but I think expecting him to have another year like he did in '04 may be asking too much.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 02:03 PM) Seriously, why is this still going on? Its not happening, its been run out of arguments in trade winds. Seriously, WHY NOT PUJOLS???? Speaking of which, the Carl Crawford thread is now at 15 pages.

QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) So..then why try to improve the team??? :headshake Ok, say we trade Freddy and Uribe for Tejada. That leaves the relatively unproven McCarthy and the always durable El Duque (at a young 94 yrs of age) as the 4 and 5 guys next year. Add that to the likelihood that Garland will bolt after '06 (unless the market for solid starters comes down) and our World Series winning pitching staff wouldn't be nearly as appealing. Not to mention that we'd have downgraded defensively with Urive gone. Now I don't pretend to know what will happen in the future and we may never have to worry about the scenario I just mentioned. But all I can do is assure you this...Kenny Williams would not make this trade! Now that we have settled that...

QUOTE(Steve Bartman's my idol @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 11:17 AM) Cuz a player of Tejada's caliber comes along once every 10 years! A rotation like ours doesn't come along very often either. Hell, its not a stretch to call our rotation the best in baseball, and possibly the best Sox starting rotation in recent memory. To break that up for a player we don't need would be absolutely rediculous. Nobody is questioning Tejada's ability...just our need for him.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 12, 2005 -> 11:18 AM) That would be dumb as stone. Zambrano is a hell of a pitcher and honestly he's better than any of the 5 guys we have on the southside, imo. The guys a beast and he's still young and I don't think he's paid like a front line pitcher (yet). If he was mentally stable, he'd be perfect.

QUOTE(Drew @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) Sure they do. Robert Parish wore 00 for the Celtics and Bulls. There was a hockey goalie in the 1970s who wore 00, I forget his name. Ed Belfour wore 00 one year in the All-Star Game, back when he was still a Blackhawk. And there was also a 00 for the Raiders in the 1960s or 70s, IIRC. Former Giant and Mariner Jeffrey Leonard sported the double zero during his playing career. He of the "limp arm" home run trot fame.

I highly doubt that Tejada will be anywhere but Baltimore next season. He already appears to be backing off his "trade demands" and just wanted to wake up ownership. Jayson Stark talks about the chances of this happening: Orioles' pacifying of Tejada will take some convincing Melvin Mora had this to say... Hardly sounds like Tejada is demanding a trade. Sounds more like he's trying to push Angelos and Co. to start making some moves. The one thing we know for sure is that he isn't happy. Then again, who is in Baltimore?

QUOTE(TheBlackSox8 @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 07:59 PM) What number does Mackowiak take? He was 3 for Pitt.....isn't that retired for the sox? He was #59 during most of his time with the Pirates. Being that #3 can't be worn, I'm betting he goes back to 59...that is, unless we retired John Snyder's number and nobody told me about it.

f*** YEAH!!! Lets hope this is legit. They've been known to screw around with release dates before.

Damaso Marte could be headin to the Dodgers

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Dec 11, 2005 -> 01:27 AM) Bradley is good for certain teams. He would be good for the Cubs because it seems like guys in their clubhouse don't really care about winning. They seem to go around acting casual about everything. They need someone who would call someone out when they're not doing their job. For some reason I find it hard to believe that a guy like Bradley would be a positive influence in any clubhouse. It wouldn't surprise me if he called someone out. It also wouldn't surprise me if he did it through the press or on the field. And it definitely wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs would be looking for a way to dump his ass by midseason just to get rid of the disruption. Carl Everett was just a little nutty. Milton Bradley is a giant asshole. Its not a real accurate comparison. -
Excellent Phil Rogers article on Mackowiak

Here's another nice Trib article on Mackowiak. (By the way, plenty of room in the Rob Mackowiak Fan Club).... -
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Dec 10, 2005 -> 04:51 PM) That jerk helped us win a World Series. I think he's really matured since and is a team player. I'd want him back if we still had an open DH spot. I thought he did well here, and seemed to be a lot better than advertised (as far as attitude goes). But he'd still show his old colors from time to time...like when he complained about being moved down in the batting order or when he did that unnecessary Trib interview when he went on his dino rant once again (some other goofy things were said too). During that same interview he also made that dumbass "99 percent of baseball fans don’t know what they’re watching" comment that was brought up in the article. Not sure what the point in saying that was. But overall, he could have been a lot worse though.

ESPN reporting that Boston has contacted Baltimore about a Ramirez for Tejada swap. Salaries play a big part of getting the trade done.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 10, 2005 -> 03:54 PM) I think that says that maybe Jeff Kent was more of the problem, but since we aren't a part of the clubhouse all we can do is speculate. I think Kent is kind of a douche bag, but I doubt he was the reason Bradley was such a headcase with the Dodgers. Remember, the Indians couldn't get rid of him soon enough. Bradley's a talented player who can put up some good numbers. But the only reason it would only take Marte to get him is the baggage that comes with him. And from all the stuff I've read on him, he ain't worth it. I was actually kind of hoping the Cubs were gonna be dumb enough to take him on. -
QUOTE(Hawkfan @ Dec 9, 2005 -> 05:07 PM) marte is the s***... do any of you watch baseball.. at anytime other than september of 05? Well, he's gotten progressively worse the past two years and the stats reflect that, so I guess I'd ask you the same question.
-
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 9, 2005 -> 01:25 PM) The Red Sox need a LHP. If that is indeed true, Marte wouldn't help them...that is unless they are just looking for a guy who can throw with his left hand.

QUOTE(Ricky3353 @ Dec 9, 2005 -> 01:17 AM) (20 bucks says Erye and Howry have ERA's around 6) I agree that Eyre and Howry aren't going to be so hot, but ERA's around 6? I'll take you up on that bet.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Dec 9, 2005 -> 12:38 AM) The Cubs If you watch ESPN you swear they play on the east coast. I mean this with all sincerity when I say that I've liked you a lot more since you got off your "Kenny Williams is evil" thing. Amazing what winning a World Series can do. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 08:15 PM) I suggested this in ATH so I'll suggest it here...Manny for Tejada along with a few dollars changing hands? Yah, cause Baltimore hasn't had enough headaches. Despite my sarcasm, I think you're on to something. -
Big fan of the trade. Its pretty simple: we got a guy we needed for a guy we didn't. We couldn't rely on Marte anymore, and was definitely on the outs with Ozzie. If we could have gotten more for him, it wouldn't be a whole lot more. I know hard throwing lefties "don't grow on trees", but teams don't exactly fall over themselves for left handed pitchers with less than average control and an inability to get left handed hitters out. Not to mention a player who wasn't exactly a model teammate down the stretch. Either way, Mackowiak is a guy who fills many needs: Insurance for Crede, backup OF who can also spell Iguchi from time to time, a solid left handed bat off the bench, and (maybe most importantly) the possible key to Timo's departure. Nice work Kenny!
