QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 06:50 PM) Thanks for one of the biggest hits in Sox history. ...and your namesake for about a week.

The Score just reported that sources from San Diego are saying that Blum will be returning to the Padres next season. If true, while his stay here was short and mostly uneventful, he'll forever have a place in Sox lore with that Game 3 homer.

Bob Nightengale: Sox Tell Phills They Want Thome

QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 05:40 PM) I'm in no way, shape, or form suggesting he's NOT a good guy.. just want to get a perspective from someone without a microphone or tv camera in their face talking about their teammate. Didn't think you were, and I know you have the means to find that perspective. Just thought it was a nice article on the guy. -

QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) Good grief.. soon the entire Indians squad will have passed through our doors. Also.. I'm gonna get some details on his work ethic, clubhouse persona, etc. just in case this holds some water. A Baseball Digest article I found: Jim Thome: blue-collar slugger -
I believe this is the 3rd Sox player to be nominated by an SI writer for Sportsman of the Year (Pauly and the Count are the others).

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Nov 16, 2005 -> 11:05 AM) That is not a great assessment. Carlos Delgado signed a 4 year 52 million dollar deal last year. 13 million a year. Actually, his contract is very backloaded...he's set to make $16 million in '08 and another $16 million in '09 (with a $4 million buyout). I like the idea of getting Delgado, but my concern is that we'd be paying him $16 million a year when he's 36 and 37 yrs old. Hopefully he's putting up the same numbers by then, but who knows. -
Hendry's a pretty good GM, but its still mind boggling how you enter the offseason with the bullpen being your biggest need and you enter the next season without addressing it...at all! From the sounds of it, they may be on the verge of doing it again. Either way, that teams got a ton of holes to fill, and Hendry's may have to pull off some magic if they want to catch the Cards. Hell, I'm not sure they'll be better than the Brewers next year.

From a chat with a supposed ESPN "expert" (yes, I realize that is kind of an oxymoron):

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Nov 14, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) Only in these forums would someone be _____ enough to equate a firestorm of rioting spreading across 300 French towns to discrimination of blacks in southern America nearly 1/2 a century ago. These Frenchies (who probably would all vote for Democrats if giving the chance) were just looking for an excuse to engage in civil unrest. If you believe they were all acting under a noble cause you're a bigger ____ than I thought you were. How insightful.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Nov 13, 2005 -> 09:46 PM) True, but I believe as we move on in two to three years, our payroll could reach near $100 million. Next season, attendance will be insane for the Sox, possibly around 2.8 million and I think we can afford these players as well as give the guys who deserve it raises. However, this is probably Count's last year with the Sox and that frees us $8 million for a cheaper player such as a Haigwood or Broadway or a cheaper veteran. Agreed. I wouldn't rule it out. It'll definitely be interesting to see how our probable rise in popularity translates into spending. Still, after looking at Delgado's contract, its easy to see why it would scare a lot of teams off. Probably means that it wouldn't take a ton of talent to get him either.
-
Looks fine, but consider how much bigger Delgado's contract gets over time... By the last year of his contract, he'll be 37 yrs old and making $16 million. And if we keep Konerko (which would most likely be at a 4 or 5 year deal), he'll probably be making around $13 million by the time he's 34. Just saying that its a ton of money and years to invest in two players who aren't exactly kids. Also remember, some of our starters will be looking at paydays in the next year or two. As much as I'd like to see both of them in our lineup next year, my guess it that if we get Delgado, Pauly most likely will be gone.
-
Yay, Steve Phillips is back...now doing the Dodgers press conference. I guess actually being a GM didn't work for him so well, so maybe pretending to be one is the way to go. This has to be the dumbest, lamest thing ESPN has done since hiring Rush Limbaugh.

Who are the Cubs?

When I find out who the hell Dan Perry is, I'll be able to decide whether or not his opinion matters... ...after further review, it doesn't.

Iguchi hopes to play in World Baseball Classic
KevHead0881 replied to rangercal's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) Then the article is wrong. "Iguchi, who had a batting average of .278 with 142 hits including 15 home runs in his US debut season, became the first Japanese player to win the biggest baseball title." Well, Irabu never actually pitched in the World Series, but he was on the Yankee roster in 1999 and pitched in the ALCS that year. I believe that still counts. http://www.baseball-reference.com/i/irabuhi01.shtml -

QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 05:15 PM) I just realized how proud Japan must be of the Gooch being the first Japanese player to win the World Series. Actually, this guy was the first. -
Statistically, we outscored our opponents in 110 games this season.

Ok, so where does great pitching, good defense and timely hitting fit into their equation? It's funny that saying these three things win championships has become such a cliche, but when it actually happens, somehow people are surprised. Shocking!

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 10:39 AM) That's a different game. This was with 2 outs in the 9th, and then Crisp hit a chop double over PK's head. Hermanson retired Hafner to end the game. I've never seen someone end up missing a ball by as much as Pods did on that play. Yup, thats the game. June 4: White Sox 6, Indians 5 That Rowand play was pretty friggin cool though.
-
Well, it wasn't funny when it happened, but I got a good laugh after Scotty Pods lost the ball in the sun in the ninth inning in a game against Cleveland on June 4. We ended up winning, so I was able to laugh at the replays of the ball falling at least 20 feet away from Scott as he was waiting for the ball to come down. Of course, I nearly had a stroke while I was watching it happen, but winning always helps. Although, this wasn't nearly as funny as when Grady Sizemore lost the ball in the sun in K.C.
