QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 07:25 PM) Designated for Assignment means sent to Charlotte. He still has options left. STUPID MOVE. JENKS AINT NO UPGRADE OVER SHINGO! I'm not saying that he is an upgrade over Shingo, but how do you know he isn't? We've only seen him twice. This move makes sense if only for the fact that we'll have more chances to see what Jenks can do. We know what Shingo can do...and it ain't workin.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:49 PM) Which is exactly why I would rather keep shingo. He not only has been a part of this team and has contributed to our success, but he is a built in support system for Iguchi as well. I dont want to make a move, just to make a move. While I agree with your reasoning, if Shingo's only purpose at the moment is to be a companion to Gooch, then I think we're wasting a roster spot. If Shingo played a significant role in our bullpen (by that I mean pitching more then once a week in mop-up duty) I'd say keep him around. Now, if your argument is that Ozzie should find more ways to use Shingo, then I'm for that. Although, that could be a tad scary.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:42 PM) And how did he do before that? And how has he fared with SF when he switched to the mediocre NL west. He is garbage, pure and simple. Sometimes pitchers just get overused and old, and cant throw like they used to. He is one of those guys. Well, I hate to break it to ya, but you're not gonna get much better for Shingo.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:07 PM) I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that his last 2 apperances with the Cubs were in like 7th inning situations......and he went from nightmare to comedy. You may be right. But I know last year, before Borowski went down, Hawkins was used primarily the same way he was used in Minnesota, and basically was just as good. He had a pretty good ERA last year (2.63) and he pitched 82 innings while only piling up 25 saves. I suspect that his good ERA stems mostly from his success in his limited role as setup man. Of course, that was last year, and his confidence may be shot all together. I don't know. I still say that a Shingo for Hawkins deal would be a good one for us. If Hawkins still sucks, he can resume Shingo's role as a guy for mop-up duty.
-
If you don't want Hawkins cause he sucked as a Cub, you are totally neglecting the reason for his suckage. The Cubs used him as a closer. He cannot close ballgames. But IIRC, on the rare occasion that the Cubs used him correctly, he has some success in the middle innings and set-up role. Remember, he sucked as a closer in Minnesota too. Once Everyday Eddie emerged as a quality closer, they moved LaTroy to setup man and he flourished. For simply swapping him with Shingo, I have little doubt that it would be an upgrade.

Just for kicks, somebody call in and ask if Gload can play 3rd?

QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) your right. it is just speculation. Regardless , I will stick to my speculation. That's why this is a message board. I'm not critcizing your speculation. Just friendly debate.
-
QUOTE(rangercal @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:50 PM) That does not mean that they were not both indirect shots at Frank. But saying that they WERE indirect shots at Frank would be pure speculation. So far this year, I've heard Pauly do nothing but compliment Frank...directly, that is.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:42 PM) It's kinda like breaking up with your ex-girlfriend. Afterward, she hits the skids, unable to find another guy, while you end up with a model. You know? You walk into the bar with her on your arm and just kinda give your ex a nod. Nothing needs to be said. Yah, still waiting for that scenario.
-
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:17 PM) I'll just say...um...Anthrax. Well, I don't think he falls in the "eating crow" category. He still thinks we should have built this team his way.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:07 PM) After thinking about it, this whole damn thread is stupid. There is nothing wrong with what Konerko said, and if you think there is then you're just looking for something to complain about because you dislike Paul. Ridiculous. I'm out of here. ^^^^^^^^^^ By my count, this is about the 4th or 5th thread about something "terrible" that Paul said this season, and I don't remember any of them being remotely rational. This one takes the cake. There is absolutely no harm in this statement. He said Maggs is the best player he's ever played with, and you can make a strong case that he's right. He didn't say he was the only great player he played with, nor did he intentionally put anybody down. If a player somehow takes this personally, they should probably grow thicker skin.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:57 AM) You are right, and that's why KW makes the big bucks, he has to figure stuff like that out and proceed accordingly. The one thing we do know is, the Red Sox have owned Contreras. Agreed. Ya know whats ironic though? We already have a guy at the back of the rotation who has proven that he can dominate in the playoffs. Too bad it's El Duque and we couldn't be less confident in him.
-
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:48 AM) So if this deal happens, that's why. They would have decided Burnett is a better playoff bet than Contreras. Well, I agree with all your logic, but its hard to conclude that Burnett is the better playoff pitcher being that he's never pitched a game in the playoffs.
-
I'm thinking that a deal for Burnett ultimately hinges on Contreras. Kenny is gonna try and convince Florida to accept a deal minus Contreras (hopefully cause he realizes that Burnett replacing Contreras does not make a dramatic improvement in our staff). If Florida says no, which I suspect they would, Kenny will settle for a more middle-of-the-road type guy for the back of the rotation (Ted Lilly comes to mind). From all the reports ranging from ESPN, SF Chronicle, the Trib, etc., it sounds as if any trade involving Schmidt or Burnett would require some major league ready players in return. And I think our roster is too set and we are in too good of a position to be trading several current roster players. We keep hearing that a trade for one of these guys would most likely include a package of Contreras and Marte. And I just see a trade that includes these two, and/or anybody else on our current roster is counterproductive.
-
Although I didn't think they'd be this good, I was actually pretty optimistic about our chances this year. I was pretty wrong on a few players though. From March 20: From March 28: I'm an idiot!

You're saying that Kruk and Reynolds were wrong? "If I woke up tomorrow morning with my head sown to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am right now." -
Farnsworth is a nut job. I sure wouldn't mess with him.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 06:39 PM) Almost being the key word there. We've won more games this wknd in Cleveland than we have in 10 years in Oakland, it seems. Yes. The constant losing certainly adds to the annoyance factor in Oakland. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 06:33 PM) Yeah, those pitches at the knees early in the game would have been strikes in 95% of the games I've watched. That outside corner to left-handers is jumping all over the place. -
