Jose Contreras
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 03:39 PM) Dodgers are probably going to go after Blanton, hard, instead of Garland. I just don't expect us to get much for Jon Garland. Who are we going to trade with and what are we going to get from them? Almost every team in baseball would love to have a guy like Garland in the rotation and any team looking to improve the pen will have to consider Garland as he'll be one of the 3-4 very best pitchers on the market. Hell, Contreras could possibly one of the 5 best pitchers on the market (the market this year is freaking horrible...there are zero worthy FA starters and aside from Blanton I can't think of many starters better than Garland or even Contreras for that matter). Therefor if you want a starter, you'll have to come to CHicago and Kenny should have all kinds of leverage.

Lilly and Hill will completely fall apart if they have to pitch on limited rest (I guarantee it).

Speed, Power and Contribution to the Offense
I just want to say as a whole this is a great thread. Props to NS for thinking outside of the box and bringing up this discussion and props to all of those who have contributed in this thread discussing different aspects that make NS's stat flawed or that can be added to improve the stat (as a whole though its a good start and I personally agree with where NS is coming from in the case that there isn't a really good stat out there that truly takes into account the added benefits speed can bring). We all know speed means guys can go from 1st to 3rd (score from 2nd). But its not a tangible stat (aside from looking at stolen bases). How do you factor in the added pressure a good base s tealer puts on the pitcher (which ultimately could lead to him losing focus on the hitter or adjusting his pitch selection to where he throws more fastballs...both giving the batter added benefit).

Speed, Power and Contribution to the Offense
I know the Angels score from 2nd and go from 1st to 3rd more than any team in baseball. I saw the stat a couple weeks ago during an Angel telecast and it showed some of the other teams (I'd assume the Sox are right around dead last in this category) as well. However, I've never seen this sort of stat on ESPN (but mlb has a pretty good database so maybe there is a way to get it from there).

Oden lost for season
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 12:35 PM) Yeah, if they end up with a pick that leads to Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, Eric Gordon, Chase Budinger, etc....they won't be crying, especially if Oden is back healthy that following year. As for the microfracture, that is the injury Amare Stoudemire had. He had the surgery in October, tried to come back a little over 5 months later in March, and after 2 games still had stiffness and missed the rest of the year because of (admittedly) rushing back too fast. And also, as good as Amare was last year, his raw athletic ability obviously wasn't as good, although that did help him IMO develop his all around game further. Lets not forget that prior to this past full season where Amare looked to be healthy, people were beginning to question whether he would ever have much of a career at the NBA level (due to undergoing the micro-fracture surgery). In fact I remember reading numerous articles from respected sites such as ESPN basically implying his career was over or would be drastically reduced (I even read where he's going to at one point have to have the surgery again). Zach Randolph is probably the best case of a guy who had the surgery and has been able to come back without having any problems since. Darius Miles also underwent the surgery with the Blazers and has had a far tougher recovery (but is expected back this year). The Blazers have said that Oden's microfracture is much less severe than the one Randolph or Miles had so that bodes well for him. I still don't think this is a minimal procedure (in terms of his NBA career). In terms of everday life, yes its a minimal procedure.

QUOTE(Shadows @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 01:33 PM) Yeah we have high speed internet I believe, and it said it connected and it went like two things down on the check before failing one which I dont remember what it was called.. You just have ot go into the internet settings and essentially tell it to connect to your wireless network (I assume you are on wireless). Once you do it once, it will be auto ready for whenever you want to go onto xbox live in the future.

QUOTE(SnB @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 08:53 AM) i played 07 to death last year with my roomate. Once you get used to the stick controls, it makes a world of difference. We'll have to look into getting 08 08 is way better (and I loved 07). I haven't gotten the full version but the demo was sweet. The puck physics are a lot better and the goalies are improved (less cheap goals).

Garland for Gold Glove?
Garland flat out is amongst the best in the AL defensively (imo, he's superior to Buehrle whose also one of the very best in the league). Garland has cat like reflexes and is just a tremendous athlete in general. (I probably sound like hawk).

Sox @ Royals
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 07:06 PM) Thanks for telling the board your position. Remember you have written off 2008, no turning back now. Maybe stop baiting greg775 too. Everyone's position on the "I want them to win" or "I want them to lose" is pretty well known at this point. By the way, I have the letters out to the powers that be in the White Sox org. If they answer and consent to an interview I'll let the board know. Better to reach out and try to get some answers, imo, than complain about the same thing on a message board every day. Awesome...very excited to see if your able to land an interview. It would be great to get the views from the inside as I think at this point most of us all know where each other stand (but regardless of where we stand...what matters is where the Sox stand).

Sox @ Royals
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 05:53 PM) Gee - I bet we could have heard that fixed statement last year about this time, eh? Major difference. Zach has been pitching at the major league level for the entire season and aside from a few blips has been pretty solid for a young pitcher. He also has shown that he's been making strides. Floyd on the other hand was pretty much relegated to minor legaue duties the year the Sox acquired him, had dropping velocity, and was pretty much worth nothing to the Phillies (If the Royals dealt Zach, it would be to get two young prospects, imo). Bottom line I'd be all for a McCulloch/Broadway for Grienke type of deal (or for a player similar to Grienke in other systems). However, I don't know if the Royals make that type of move and again it would be a risky move for the Sox as you never know if Grienke will flop (still he's got a very good arm and is still rather young).

Sox @ Royals
QUOTE(Felix @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 12:03 PM) I've been watching. Greinke has been looking pretty good so far, as has Garland. Zach is a guy that I think will be on a lot of teams radars. I don't know if the Royals would give up on him, but I heard some talk that they would consider moving him (don't know if they have soured on that with the way he's pitched lately). He has a great arm and good stuff and seems to be over all the mental crap that happened to him after he was rushed up to the majors at such a young age.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 13, 2007 -> 10:02 PM) I believe Jason and I both wanted Kennedy, but we won too many games. Shant be a problem next year. Yep...I couldn't believe how far he fell in that draft, but it still wasn't quite far enough (not that the Sox would have grabbed him). Man he would look good. Heck, earlier this year I think you could have potentially traded for Kennedy as there were still some who believed he didn't have enough upside and that the Yanks would have considered moving him (as Joba and Hughes are rated above him and rightfully so based on there ridiculously right arms).

SS preference for 2008
I've thought about Itzuris but I don't know if the Angels would give up that depth. I think he'd be a tremendous fit and would be worth the risk (to see if he could duplicate those numbers as a full time starter). No doubt to me he's capable of being an average defensive SS.

SS preference for 2008
Bill Hall (CF, former SS): 2008 - 4.8M 2009 - 6.8M 2010 - 8.4M 2011 - 9.25M Options (500K buyout) He is also a SS who posted an 800+ OPS in 2 straight seasons entering this year (he has struggled this season). The average salary for the 3 seasons he is guaranteed is about 6.6M per year. I don't know what his injuries were this season (I think it was an ankle) but if the Sox feel he could be healthy he'd be a pretty good addition who'd definitely add some pop to the lineup (decent speed, ie faster than Uribe, but not a great base stealer). If the club could get him in a deal involving Contreras I'd definitely listen (or if by taking on the contract they could get him for someone like Sweeney or Anderson plus Broadway again I'd listen).

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 12, 2007 -> 12:03 PM) Why in the hell did Yost let Hall bat? He's had a terrible season, a terrible game, and they have much better options off the bench in either Gross vs a righty or Dillon to face a lefty. Would anyone be against the Sox trying to trade for Hall and moving him back to SS? He's coming off a down season and isn't great defensively but I still think he'd be a superior upgrade over Uribe (and when he's at his best he's a darn good player. I don't know what the Brewers would ask but I'd be all for it.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 11, 2007 -> 02:01 PM) I don't know what Jason means... But NIU could have hosted the game in Dekalb, and have less than 30K in attendance, or they could play that game in Soldier Field and sell out 61K at $50 a pop. I'm sure they split that with Iowa. I was reading an article saying the game was going to be Iowa's 2nd largest grossing non-bowl game ever (in terms of money and I think it was Northern Illinois' largest grossing game).
