Sox vs. Boston, 8/23 7:11 CT
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 01:26 PM) Yea, you have, but who is going to take him and his contract? That would be nobody. Are you serious? There isn't a team out there that wouldn't take Thome on (at least any team that considers themselves in contention and in need of a bat...IE Angels). He's paid for one remaining year and the Sox are going to be paying him under 10M a year (and could obviously send that cash to another team if necessary). He still outproduces a ton of guys making much more than him.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 12:27 PM) KW should be ashamed of himself for not trying hard to trade Garland and Thome at the deadline this year. I also don't know what's more embarassing.....how many Red Sox fans there are today compared to White Sox fans, or the fact that Andy Gonzalez is the only substitute we have for Jim Thome today. The only reason I can't completely slam Kenny is that I don't know for sure whether he's went to Thome and Thome told him he wouldn't waive his clause. I just think its assinine to keep an aging slugger on a team that may or may not contend next year (I know Kenny plans on it contending, but the reality is we don't know and regardless, even if you want to contend you are going to have to infuse the club with some young talent from the positional standpoint and Thome brings you two young starters (ie 2 TOP Prospects, plus a Top 5 prospect).

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 12:02 PM) A $3.5 million reserve is not a funny thing to me. They won't pick up his option, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him brought back after they decline his option (at say 1M a year). He's a valuable bench player if they ever decided to just leave him at that (maybe they actually would). I'd be all for it if the Sox brought in a vet outfielder to go with Dye, plus acquired a young outfielder to play the other spot (of course I want that young outfielder playing 6 out of every 7 games or so...but Dye/Konerko could use a break and Erstad could always be a late inning pinch runner/defensive replacement). However, if they don't do that I don't want Erstad near the roster because he will be forced to play near everyday and he just can't do it nor should he be asked to do it.

Sox vs. Boston, 8/23 7:11 CT
QUOTE(ottawa_sox @ Aug 24, 2007 -> 11:56 AM) He's 37. So it makes sense to give him a day off here and there. My reaction resulted from the multitudinous, infantile, daily Thome negatives that comes more from the Sox downward spiral than any true cause and effect. It has nothing to do with negative. I think its stupid to hold onto an aging guy when you can get young talent for him, especially when that aging guy is having more and more injury history. I'm not saying Jim isn't a good player and if the Sox were a piece away I'd say fine, keep him, but they need to get younger and Thome would really help them get some good young talent here (and they still have Dye/Konerko in the middle to help the lineup). Basically put I think given the Sox situation its freaking stupid to still have Thome (and I've been consistent about this).

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 23, 2007 -> 04:47 PM) No kidding. I wonder if you guys would like having a day of classes that looks like this: 8-12 work 12-12:30 lunch 12:30-5 work And thats what I'd consider a good schedule And to think I used to whine about having an 8AM class as opposed to a 9 or 10 AM class.

Michael Vick Accepts Plea Deal Per ESPN
QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 23, 2007 -> 11:41 AM) No grapes. But enough Bazooka bubble gum before the age of 8 that in today's market it would probably add up to a felony charge. My grampa did own the store though. Bazooka Joe.....damn I haven't had that stuff in years.

Michael Vick Accepts Plea Deal Per ESPN
I don't train cows to attack each other for the death. I may eat a cow, but I don't condone teaching them to kill each other nor do I go to the slaughter house and watch them get killed for excitement. I am an animal lover though and while I don't condone hunting it is a boatload different than training two dogs to kill each other. Heck, do hunters, after not killing the animal, decide to drown it, or electricute them or hang them upside down? Vick is what he is a piece of crap. (and pieces of crap come in all shapes, sizes and colors). If this was Brian Urlacher, I'd feel the exact same way.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 21, 2007 -> 09:25 PM) Same situation at my house. The idea that cable saves so much money in any form over DirecTV is a cute myth, but a myth indeed. And plus you can the option of all the sports packages with the dish and get ESPNU, NFL Network, Big Ten Network, etc. Not to mention, the "bad weather messing up the dish" thing is greatly overhyped. Our dish doesn't get interference from bad weather often at all, and when it does, it's only for 5 or 10 minutes during the worst of a bad storm. For the sake of debate....we have 3 HD DVR boxes at my house (for cable we just pay 6.95 a month and it covers the receiver and dvr)....if we had DirectTv we would have the fee just to have access to the box (which is pretty much 6.95 a month as well) plus having to purchease HD DVR box (as there is no way to get them for free) for $200 bucks a piece (that right there is a $600 out of pocket cost). In terms of channels, our package pricing is pretty much the exact same (plus we have 2 tv's that don't have boxes, but get all the cable channels, aside from digital channels) and if we wanted that with DirectTv we would need to get boxes (which I think you can manage to get for free after rebate)

Textbook Strategies
QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 19, 2007 -> 09:45 PM) Besides lining up like lemmings at the campus bookstore, what are other venues? Between my son and I we are looking at a sweet $1,000 next week in text books. International editions are the same book for a boatload less and you can typically find them online (problem is you have to than sell them online because no bookstore will buy them back). How legal it is to buy an international edition in the US, that I don't know.

Pods Hurt Again
As much as I hate to see injuries, this may be a blessing in disguise because I think it officially puts the end to the Sox ever considering Pods an option for the outfield next season. I thank Scotty for 05 and wish him the best of luck with some other team next year.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Aug 21, 2007 -> 12:01 PM) I agree 100% with that argument. Cable prices are way too high already to begin with (another major gripe for me, and I'm actually looking into other services). A counter-argument someone mentioned on here is that we're paying for stuff like that home shopping network that many of us don't watch, but I bet those ratings would blow away whatever a big ten networking showing fringe games would get. It seems that comcast does not want to put it on a basic cable package because it would not generate the viewership necessary for it to make sense for the price, and I think that makes sense. Yes, there is a large contingent of big 11 fans in the Chicago area, but probably nowhere near as much as some of you may think. If the NFL is considered niche, big 11 should obviously be too...by far. But if they were to get rid of a crappy channel or two that nobody watches to add it and not change the price, I wouldn't care. I don't know how anyone thinks Satelite is cheaper than cable. DirectTv would have assloads of upfront costs, s***ty equipment, and there monthly service fees really aren't much different (the big thing is the equipment costs are exorbitant via DirectTV). I could see Satelitte being cheaper if you just want the basic basic (no HD, no dvr, no anything and pretty much one tv hookup) but anything other than that and DirectTv quickly gets exponentially more expensive than cable (and its HD service doesn't touch my Cox HD service...that could change whenever they expand and get that new dish up).

Shelby, Sanchez named offensive players of week
I do think he'll play in the majors (or at least has good odds of doing so) but most likely as a platoon type guy and that is the problem with a lot of the Sox prospects (many with great chances at a major league roster...very very few with a chance of being anything close to impact players/all stars).

Shelby, Sanchez named offensive players of week
QUOTE(BearSox @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 05:37 PM) Can we consider Shelby an actual hitting prospect? Is he top 10 worthy? Ya he's a prospect. I don't know if I'd call him high upside or anything crazy, but he's a prospect with a decent chance of playing in the majors (not necessarily as a starter, but he's got a good shot of at least getting a cup of coffee which is more than you can say about a lot of guys).

Tigers Set to Sign Porcello
QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Aug 20, 2007 -> 08:13 PM) Man that has completely missed the point. People are talking about how we should be thrilled to pay some 1st round pick $5 mill because of his potential. I say...here's the 2000 draft and the 16 first round pitchers and COMBINED their worth maybe $5 mill. That means in this draft you have a 1/16th chance of landing a guy worth $5 mill. As for me "picking" 2000 because it was a terrible draft. You CANNOT use a draft from two years ago and say Joba is GOING to be great...because it's still maybe. Let's use 1999...and don't make me keep picking these out: 1: Josh Hamilton 2: Josh Becket 6: Josh Girdley 7 Kyle Snyder 8 Robert Bradley 9: Barry Zito 10 Ben Sheets 12: Brett Myers 13 Mike Paradis 14 Ty Howington 15 Jason Strumm 16 Jason Jennings 18 Richard Stahl 22: Matt Ginter 24: Kurt Ainsworth 25 Bob MacDougal 26 Ben Christensen 27: David Walling 28 GErik Baxter 29: Omar Ortiz 30: Chance Caple That's 21 pitchers. Zito's 111-74. Ben Sheets 71-73. Beckett 72-50. Jason Jennings 60-64. Which of these guys is better than Buehrle? MLB drafting ESPECIALLY of pitchers is a wild longshot. Not worth $5 mill that Detroit is giving Porcella...Porcello=Josh Hamilton. Lets make one thing clear...in that draft there were only a handful of pitchers that would have even came close to demanding that type of bonus. I'm not saying you take Matt Ginter, who never would have asekd for anything close to 5 mill and take him. However, if a guy is head and shoulders better than everyone else than you better freaking take him.
