  1. Bear...I know the times I did it, you would get 40-50 per game but I never took any classes so I don't know if I was a IHSA ump or not. I just knew the guy in charge of umping (teammates dad) and did games over the summer (not many) but I do know the pay was great as a kid.
  2. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:07 PM) Story Hooray! Now if only they could get that bid fat turd Chris Berman to be back back back back gone with him too. I wonder what they will do with the dead air time on ESPN radio that went by the name "The Dan Patrick Show." Horrible news. Dan Patrick is my favorite and his radio show is also my favorite radio show on the air. QUOTE(longshot7 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:28 PM) I like his show in small doses, but it will be missed. The heyday of it was the interplay between him and Dibble. Dibs and Patrick was the best that radio could be. 3. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:52 PM) I don't care about post counts, but I do like having access to all the previous posts. That would be the downside, to me - having a seperate site and a current site to look at for various things. If the database basics are remaining static (meaning you aren't change the type of DB you use), you may also be able to import the old data into the new format (of the message board layer software allows for that, and hasn't changed its architecture from version to version). What we would do is essentially archive this site and have it accessible at soxtalk.net (we own that domain as well) and have the posts turned off but you could always go through and look at it. Than Soxtalk.com would have all of the new posts and everything would be fresh (we stlil use the same mysql database but the problem is our database, which is absolutely ginormous...think about a notepad document that is well over a couple gigs) is corrupt and we can't go in and get rid of that corruption without spending a lot of money (cause none of us have the knowledge to do so and from the sounds of it it is also a very labor intense project). So basically put you would still be able to see the site, looking like it does now (with on ads on the .net version) but it would be a non working version (aside from looking at posts). In a year or two this place would really be the only place most look (aside from the ocassional glance to see the 05 archive or whatever else people are curious about).
  4. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 01:45 PM) Can't you just manually edit post counts? The technical answer is yes, but if we did that any time we ever wanted to sync up the database or restore things we'd have to go in and manually edit them back (as a recount would just count the posts made and would not factor in our manual entry so it would be very labor intense considering the number of members). But what we could potentially do (and I say potentially because its not something I personally would want to do nor would I want anyone else to do it) would be to create a new category where people could put in there old post count (call it something) so that number would still kind of stay so to speak. I figure this site is still young (in terms of the net) so it won't take too long till we are celebrating many more great accomplishments and it will be great doing so on a server enviornment that works right.
  5. QUOTE(BamaDoc @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) Now that Iguchi is begining to hit do you trade him, resign him or let him walk. I don't know what level of compensation picks he might bring if any due to his status. Based on what I've read we would not get any draft pick compensation for Iguchi (as part of his contract prevents us from offering arb). I don't know if he has much trade value but he would obviously add value to a contender and should be moved (unless of course the Sox think he can help them get Ichiro or the other Japanese outfielder). However, 2nd baseman are generally undervalued (both on the market as FA's and via trade) and I doubt we would get any significant prospects for him. That doesn't mean we wouldn't get value for him though.
  6. It has come to our attention (and has been so for a long long time) that part of the problem with our database stems from an upgrade we made around 2 years ago. The upgrade caused a lot of errors in the database (and our db is huge) and these errors lead to slower queries and the db sticking from time to time (in my non technical terminology since I don't know the technical terminology, lol). I think the only way to ever really solve this problem (aside from going to a database specialist and paying a couple thousand bucks, which unfortunately is not an option, unless of course I win the lottery) is to start the site over. By starting over I mean installing a brand new version of the message board (no posts, no anything). The only potential thing we would be able to restore would be user names. This means nifty things like post counts and all that would be gone. However, we would plan on saving our old database and creating an archive (so that people could still look back and see all the old posts). I figure the long term benefits (faster site, able to search, doesn't crash when big news happens, etc) would be well worth the short term losses and hassle. I just wanted to throw this out to public opinion though to see if you all would be overly dissapointed or if you would be okay with this (basically if so we'd test it and make sure that the db was in fact the cause of the problem and if it wasn't, we would than bring back the old database and continue to see what the cause of the server issue is). This site should be able to handle a lot more than it does and we want to get it set up so it can so that we can continue to make and turn this into a better place.
  7. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 12:33 PM) If you'll remember, when making some preliminary roster projections for the 2008 season, I predicted Iguchi will re-sign with the White Sox on the cheap after a disappointing 2007 campaign. Now, that is really starting to look like a possibility. Depending on what Williams does before the trade-deadline and during the off-season, I could easily see Iguchi brought back for $3M for 2 years, perhaps with a mutual option on a third. Naturally, this is all academic if Williams receives some nice offers before the deadline--then, it's simply a no-brainer to move him. My main problem is that the Sox really need to increase the team speed and they should do it at CF, SS, and 2B. If they can do that we would see much more of an Ozzie lineup and that in itself should make Ozzie a much more effective manager. Obviously I'm not saying all the players should have is speed, but they should be able to go from 1st to 3rd, ocassoinally steal a base, and well score from 2nd on a single. I can live with Paulie/Thome/AJP being the three slow guys in the lineup (I'd prefer just Paulie and AJP with Thome getting shipped for upper level major league ready prospects) and the rest possesing average to above average speed (I consider avg speed a guy that can go from 1st to 3rd).
  8. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 11:18 AM) What about Michael Bourn? Seems to be just what Ozzie would want. I would like Bourn, but I'd want to give up guys like MacDougall or in house prospects like Broadway to get him. I don't know if that is something the Phils would do. Plus if you got him I'd like to let him start in the 9 spot and work his way up to the top of the order as he's still a pretty raw player (tons of speed though and some ability to go with it).
  9. QUOTE(wilmot825 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 12:28 PM) http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/11753 Please Make That Deal! Greene is the white version of Ozzie, but with a little more of a bat. If the Sox were able to turn Jermaine Dye, Juan Uribe and Jose Contreras into Khalil Greene, Scott Linebrink and Matt Kemp I would be an extremely happy individual. The Sox would upgrade there pen (of course I don't think the Pads would make this deal) while upgrading at SS and making a long term upgrade in the OF (the Sox would also be substantially lowering payroll which will enable them to fill other holes). Plus Greene is a guy who is getting close to entering his prime while Kemp is still a very raw player who won't enter his prime for a while but has the ability to be an all star for a long time (something we can't say about many of the Sox internal prospects). I should note that I doubt we could get Kemp for Contreras but I could be wrong. I do think Dye/Uribe for Greene would be a deal the Pads consider (as they get a guy who could be the bat they need in the OF while not really losing a beat at SS; even though I think Greene is a much better long term alternative; the question really would be whether the Pads think Dye could get healthy this year because a healthy Dye is a significant bat added to a weak Pads lineup). I do not think the Sox would be able to land Linebrink though, however, if they did it would be a major coup because they could than get Type A compensation for him when/if he leaves as a FA and if we keep him he helps the pen (even though he could be due to struggle moving from Petco to the AL). QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 12:44 PM) The Padres already passed on this deal and acquired Milton Bradley. They no longer have any interest in Dye. This rumor came out after the Pads acquired Bradley. Regardless the Pads have a need to significantly upgrade the offense. 10. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 12:03 PM) Before or after Crede? I think after. I thought he was out for the whole year.
  11. Ya, he is no longer in the Sox system. IIRC he was a catcher while in the Sox system and they looked quite a bit alike.
  12. I ask you all to keep posting up some topics you guys would like to here us banter about in the upcoming shows and I'll do my best to get some minor league guests on in the coming week (maybe even try to get some other bloggers on board so we have some fresh voices). I also appreciate everyones weekly feedback as it helps give us a better idea of what we do good and what we need to do better or add. We should finally have a site for the podcast in the next week or two. We are also anticipating our next recording being tomorrow (with the trade deadline coming up we are going to try and do a few more shows than usual so they stay fresh since news seems to be always changing). This show will likely be more of a review of the past half with a segment talking about Buehrle and his rammifcations on the future.
  13. Ryan Howard repeats.
  14. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 10:19 AM) Didn't know that. I'm assuming that most established vets don't accept arbitration offers. I don't think that JD accepts it either, especially with his skills in clear decline. No reason for him to risk having another sub-par season and losing millions on the FA market afterwards. My feeling is that he'll sign a three-year deal at about $24 million elsewhere. I agree on the 3yr 24 deal and I think it will be with the Rangers.
  15. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 10:03 AM) Perhaps I'm reading this incorrectly, but hasn't Dye been in the league a bit too long to be arbitration-eligible? And no way that he signs anything in the $6 million/year range. And there's no way that the Sox re-sign him. Thanks for '05 and '06, JD, but you're going to have to find a new home next year. You still can offer a player arbitration and basically put if he accepts it than you work out a one year deal with him (that goes through an arbitrator). Maddux did this a couple times. You can also accept arbitration and than sign a one year deal with the club (as to go past the arbitration process). The reason the Sox offer arb is to ensure that they get draft picks for Dye who signs elsewhere. However, you do run the risk of Dye accepting arbitration and coming back to Chicago for a year. My question is will the White Sox be timid in the FA market because they offer Dye arb (if in fact they don't deal him). God, I would love to find a way to get Kemp in some sort of package involving Dye and prospects or Dye and a reliever or Dye and a starter. God, get me Kemp as one of our 3 outfielders next year.
  16. I would be all for him, a vet signing, plus a youngster in our outfield. We still would need a top of the order hitter though (as I assume the Sox would use him a bit lower in the order based upon his power, plus the fact that I'm sure there would be an adjustment period when he came over to the majors).

    Harry Potter Thread

Oh dang, I didn't realize the new movie was already coming out this week. I'll definitely be seeing that. I love all the Potter movies.
  18. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 09:55 AM) How about Contreras and Uribe for Hudson and Quentin? I think I'd rather keep Iguchi and get more for him. I don't think you move Uribe until you know you have someone to play SS. So until that point you must keep Juan because the other options out there (via FA) are serious downgrades, imo.
  19. I was very dissapointed to see that Erstad and Pods are still not ready to come off the DL. It sounds like Erstad may or may not be back within the next 12 or so days (assuming if at some point in the next 10 he goes on a short 4 game rehab assignment of sorts) and there was no more info on Pods. I was hoping both would come back and play in about 10 games before the trade deadline as both could add value to a contending club (maybe not as key pieces, but as the small pieces that could provide some valuable late inning base running or defense down the stretch). I would think both would be assets on NL ball clubs that are in contention (based on how many more substitutions happen) but both could help an AL club as well. In terms of prospects, I am thinking AAAA type players (who maybe can make it in a pen) or lower level guys that won't be in the majors for some time (if ever). Obviously we are not talking about getting a top 10 prospect in the org so this type of move is the type where you really put it on your scouts to find guys in a system that you think have some potential if they can make a couple changes.
  20. QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 09:18 AM) I'm not positive on how the compensation works...but I think he has to be top 10 at his position to get the two picks. They use two years I think...so I wouldn't bet that he's a sure thing for compensation. I do like your 4-6 mill with incentives idea. But as for Ichiro, Jones, Rowand, Hunter? I suspect they will all be way more expensive than $8 mill per. I agree that those guys will be more expensive than 8 million (actually I think Rowand signs for 8 and I could make a case for taking Dye over Rowand, although Rowand fills a much bigger need in CF, but I'd hope to heck the Sox could get him for less than 8). Unless of course Rowand continues to hit like he has for most of this season. But I do think Ichiro/Jones/Hunter are all worth at least 3-4 million more. I typically think teams are best suited going for the very best of the FA's available or waiting around for the guys that don't get what they want and end up having to settle for less. This is because you are either getting the best or a very good value but the mediocre players that get overpaid tend to turn into the worse contracts (this past off-season I didn't see the Soriano one as that horrid because you rae getting a premiere player, but some of those pitching contracts were horrid). A good example of a value signing would have been the Sox signing Iguchi or AJP (both floundered around and finally signed).
  21. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 09:49 PM) Kenny saying "buyer's mode" is different than a GM like Omar Minaya saying the Mets are in "buyers mode". I'm taking this to mean that if (or, more appropriatey, when) Kenny trades Dye, Iguchi and/or Contreras, he's looking for young players who can step in and play within the next year. I think he feels that he's built up a strong enough rotation to where the Sox won't have to go through a total "rebuilding" mode, so he wants guys like Richar who, at the very least, will be competing for a spot in 2008. I don't take this to mean the Sox will be offering Gio Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeney for Ken Griffey in an effort to save 2007. That is what I am hoping. I also think Kenny will be using this quote to give him more leverage. It could, however, mean the club also uses prospects it doesn't like as much to buy other young players that could step in and fill holes for the Sox this year and the next few years. So as long as we aren't trading for veterans, rather we are acquiring younger players (that aren't due for FA soon) than I would be a fan of buying (in a sense our selling of Dye or whomever could really be the club buying other players that Kenny likes). However, if we buy a bunch of vets I will be so damn pissed. QUOTE(LDF @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 03:18 AM) since when? i would have sworn that he lost on the freddy for floyd trade. Whether he could have gotten more than Floyd/Gio is definitely a possibility but a true loss would have been the Sox holding onto Freddy and getting nothing for him. They have Gio who is developing into one of the better LHP prospects in the game (although i won't regard him in the same class as guys like Kershaw). Gio needs to still work on some things but he has good velocity to his fastball, an improving change, and a very good curve and could find his way into a big league rotation for a number of years. Floyd still has that potential as well (albeit I would write him off if he didn't have some success this season with the major league club; I should note that I want Floyd to start the rest of the season with the club with Contreras being gone).
  22. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 06:30 AM) Hasn't Jon mentioned this knot from time to time. The knot basically just at times causes some stiffness in his shoulder. Either way its something I hate hearing from a guy I consider one of the most durable pitchers in all of baseball.
  23. QUOTE(Steff @ Jul 9, 2007 -> 07:06 AM) Yikes..! Look at what the cat dragged in!! Hope all is well. BTW, for those of you that know him, I spoke to RPS on Thursday. He's doing awesome. Awesome. All this brings me back to the olden days.
  24. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Jul 8, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) keep ignoring me Jason.... my heart, much like my will, is made of stone and brillo pads.... it will sand you down eventually. How can I ignore the great Murcie...the man that helped turned SoxNet from a two man show (and a very unpopular one at that) into Soxtalk (one of the best baseball communities on the web). Plus we had such features as "Murcie's House of Love".
