*Official* College Basketball Thread

Now I'm still nervous because I think some people will have a hard time giving Iowa the credit they deserve because of there big 10 conference record. On a sidenote, is SIU gonna get it? Cause if they are, then Northern Iowa, SIU and SMS would all be getting in from there conference which may be too many from there conference. Of course SIU and SMS have both at one time or another in the past few years proven they can make some noise, but for SMS that was a while ago and we all know Dr. Tom Davis is a heck of a coach which could give Northern Iowa the possibilities. Still I don't know if they'd be willing to put 3 teams in. Of course maybe I'm wrong cause I didn't follow SIU that much, but my thinking was they were better than Northern Iowa this year. -
HUH?????

You talking about educational programs, cause if your a business major or a teacher you definately can't go wrong at Fullerton. Also, if you happen to be a fencer, its the school to be at...defending national champs at fencing
-
Reed's still a rookie though and he'll have his struggles. He'll be a solid player though. Think Erstad upside wise with obviously a better OBP.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Mar 12, 2005 -> 09:11 PM) I'm hoping Andy Gonz bounces back. It'd be nice to have a couple of real nice OBP guys down on the farm, with he and Rogo... Plus, if he comes through and has a solid year, we'll actually have a MIF prospect worth a damn down there. Jason or Dan, how is he defensively? Defensively, just like Pedro Lopez and Robert Valido he is above average and has gold glove potential. Problem is, they all have weaknesses. If they could put each others strenghts together you'd probably have the best shortstop prospect in baseball (well minus BJ Upton). However that can't be the case. Personally I like Valido the best of all of them but he's also the farthest away. I'll tell you one thing though, watching Andy Gonzalez and Pedro Lopez up the middle (when the two are playing together) is about as good as it gets defensively.

Haha, but I'm best at giving people false up.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Mar 12, 2005 -> 05:46 PM) I hope he starts in the minors, but I can't agree with this reasoning. Why does the number of pitches matter? Lots of pitchers do well with 3 (good) pitches. You also have Randy Johnson who is a 2 pitch pitcher. Fastball...Slider

Report: McGwire Linked to Steroids
Chisoxfn replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Oh so its basically bs speculation, kind of what has been going on for a while. I think everyone speculated at one point or another about Big Mac and pretty much any other guy hitting tons of homers. -
Chris almighty...this guy must have a big ass ego.
-
They said some new report is out tying Big Mac to steroids. Didn't hear what exactly they said but I'm sure someone else did. I don't know if they have any evidence or not or if its just speculation.

The best baseball matchup of the season has been going on this weekend in Tulane. #1 ranked Tulane is playing #3 ranked Cal State Fullerton and in the first game the titans ace Ricky Romero shut down Tulane and the Titans beat up Tulane's ace in a 15-1 victory. Today the Titans and Green Wave combined for 6 HR's, 3 of the Titans coming off of 2 way star Micah Owings (who transferred from Georgia Tech this past season and will be a pretty high draft pick) got beat up and Tulane almost came back late. Fullerton goes for the sweep tomorrow and a sweep could vault them into the #1 spot Go Titans, we may be done in basketball but now it means its time to focus on baseball

Thanks for getting that up Dan Also of note the next set will be up on Tuesday, most likely later afternoon.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 12, 2005 -> 04:04 PM) The question is do they deserve a 2? Illinois UNC Duke Wake Zona Louisville Oklahoma State Kentucky Probably so, because they have so many QUALITY wins. The late slide will definately hurt them, but Okie State is a good team and its no knock on them. I'd still give them a 2 seed, imo.
-
Should be a really good game. Both teams don't get talked about much but Salim Stoudamire is a hell of a player, plus Arizona has good depth. While I think the Pac 10 blows, Arizona is one of those teams that when hot is really hard to beat, same can be said for Washington as well. If Arizona wins this they could have an outside shot at a #1 seed, but my guess is they'll be a 2 seed regardless.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Mar 12, 2005 -> 03:09 PM) Don't be so sure, UNC isn't the same team it was even a month ago. I don't know whats wrong, but somethings not right. They used to get 22+ assists a game, lately its been single digits every single game. Hopefully the extra time off will help them focus for the tourney, I'm not holding my breath though. I'm just not sure if these kids know how to win or not. I hope they prove me wrong. I dunno, call me crazy but whenever I think of UNC I get visions of that asswhooping the Heels layed on the Hawkeyes earlier in the year back when Iowa was playing some of the best basketball in the country (which lasted until the start of big 10 play, LOL).

On a sidenote, I'm gonna support Aflord again hoping that he's learned a valuable lesson from the entire Pierre Pierce incident and the Iowa program can start taking some huge steps forward. Because if he can't make some noise next year in the big 10 with this entire nucleus back, then he's got some serious issues. However, I think he comes through and I think Iowa is gonna finish top 3 in the big ten next year. You heard it here first

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2005 -> 03:05 PM) Alfords teams ALWAYS play their best ball in March. That is true. The thing is, he's got to get this team to start playing well in the big 10. They typically come out of the gates hot and tend to beat a few top 15 type teams and then once big 10 season goes they find themselves in trouble needing a strong tourney performance. Hell, Alford is a lot like Lavin in that sense cause Lavin used to always find himself in that situation with UCLA but would end up getting into the dance and oftne times going deep. Of course Alford hasn't got the Hawks deep into the dance, however, if they get in, I think they have a shot to make some noise. However, if they play UNC they will get blown out of the water, they just don't match up well with them. First they got to get in, and my guess is they'll be an 8 seed. Meaning a potential 2nd round matchup against a 1.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 12, 2005 -> 03:02 PM) Doesn't matter. The bank is open Saturday on the westside. Wow. So now back to Iowa. Are they dancin? If they aren't, its a total sham.
-
On a sidenote, I think Aflord has really stepped up his level of coaching. They came out and protected the ball in the 2nd half and really played good defense the entire tourney.
-
OMG, what a loss. Still Iowa played good. If they don't make the tourney its total horsehist...case closed. They played good after adjusting to life without Pierce and proved they can still play good. More big wins then any other team in the country minus Kansas and Illinois (RPI 50 or better). And ya that intentional foul was a bad one, but Iowa got a few calls that went there way as well. I just hope Big 10 gets 5 teams in: Ill, MSU, Wisc, Minn, and Iowa.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Mar 12, 2005 -> 01:39 PM) What I was just telling wharris a little while ago if gtech wins their tourney I think they get up to atleast a 7 seed and maybe a 6. Remember last year when Maryland came into the acc tourney as a bubble team, won the tourney and they became a 5 seed. I agree with you guys though, gtech right now can beat absolutely anyone and if they don't win the tourney and they end up as an 8 or a 9, the 1 seed who they get matched up against in the 2nd round is getting a raw deal. And then didn't Maryland pretty much choke and burn right out of the tourney? Thats what you have to also look for since GT is using up a lot of there energy. Of course GT is one of the best teams in the country on paper and they are just finally starting to play like that.
-
Tech is gonna be the team no one wants to play in the tourney. God, I hope Iowa isn't slated to play them in the 1st round Of course they'll also be worn out, just like my Hawks might from having so many games in such a short span. They played really good though, all it took was getting BJ Elder back. And Bynum was insane.
-
Great win by Tech and it also makes Iowa's resume a little bit better
-
Wisconsin up 1 at the end of the half. Been a good game though and Hawkeyes are right in it. They need to cut down on the turnovers though. Plus they need quicker rotations because Wisconsin has had some open looks from outside.
