2017-18 official NBA discussion thread

QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Feb 1, 2018 -> 12:50 PM) He hurts the tank. The biggest reason to trade him is to stockpile losses I don't agree with that logic. Moving Niko already assists in those efforts. Having strong veterans who help young players develop, learn how to win and grow and strive in this league, are very valuable. I'll miss Niko because I do think he's finally emerged as a good player but I'm glad we got a real asset for him. Albeit, odds are the player we get with the pick will never amount to being near as good as Niko...the bright side is, our existing pick should get better. -

Nice trade. Hopefully Pelicans don't make playoffs and don't somehow pull a total fluke in the lottery haha. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 1, 2018 -> 11:42 AM) They could get Robin Lopez for next to nothing. Bulls will not deal Lopez unless they get an asset for him. He's too strong of a presence and quality veteran to have the young players for the rebuild. If they get something worthwhile...sure...otherwise it isn't happening. I heard Woj on about a week ago and he had mentioned something to that effect. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 1, 2018 -> 09:48 AM) This season was Loggains second as OC But you couldn't even compare this years version of Loggains to last years. I think Fox meddled more because he knew you couldn't just let Trubisky drop back and throw it 50 times and that Glennon was incapable too...wide recievers sucked, etc. Lots of reasons and excuses but no one can deny that the statement Jordan Howard made is anything other than factual. We clearly were predictable on offense.

Lebron going to Golden State would suck but I'm not going to worry about it right now. I love watching basketball. Just love it. Such a fun sport...if only I could go to more games in person. Too cheap to buy tickets and no longer work in consulting where I have big expense account haha. Am left to about one game a year. Heck I've enjoyed watching the Bulls this year (when Dunn and Lauri are on the court). I can't say they are enjoyable at all when Jerian Grant plays. I'm starting to hope we can pull of a trade for a New Orleans 1st round pick and than work the Cavs to get the Nets pick. No idea how to do it but Cavs might get desperate enough and maybe we can take on some contracts from Pelicans to facilitate something for them. Probably unrealistic for both to happen but I think we might be able to come up with something interesting to get the Nets pick. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2018 -> 02:43 PM) That is probably the Bulls holding him out to prevent injury. Yeah - I presume this is the Bulls holding him out. Basically the report is he is being held out until the trade deadline passes. Helps ensure we tank in between now and the trade deadline and minimizes the chance Niko gets hurt when we are trying to move him. -

Awful. Thoughts go out to their family and friends. -
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 31, 2018 -> 08:46 AM) It's not that Alex Smith is bad. It's giving up a solid cornerback and a draft pick to get him, then giving him $23 million a year for 3 years guaranteed. You could have Cousins for much less earlier and I don't think there is a huge upgrade between the two. I agree with you that Washington completely messed up the Cousins situation so much so that I really don't think Cousins returning to Washington was an option. Given where they were picking, I think they made a solid move trading for Smith. Sam Bradford was traded for a 1st rounder (by Minnesota...not even referring to Eagles / Rams deals)...they gave up a 3rd rounder and a slot corner for Smith.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 31, 2018 -> 07:42 AM) I just want to say that even though I think this isn't a good trade for the Washington football team that I think Smith is a qb that can play at roughly the same level to age 40. He has been a pretty healthy qb who is mobile but doesn't rely on mobility. His game isn't predicated on deep ball (at all). I don't see why Alex Smith going to Redskins is that bad. I presume they didn't want to franchise Cousins again and knew they were going in another direction. Alex Smith is a good QB and I would expect his game to age well.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 30, 2018 -> 04:11 PM) http://m.espn.com/nba/playercard?playerId=...amp;src=desktop Seems like he is done for the season Never heard of him, but how is he a unique asset? Is there something special about his contract? I see nothing interesting about his career stats. -

How is Demps playing hardball. Who is Ajinca? Is that supposed to be Asik? How the heck is Asik a unique asset? I presume Bulls leaking is to basically tell other orgs interested in Niko to put out your best and final offer. -

Interesting to see where the dominoes fall and what (if any) protection exists on that 1st round pick. -

Dunn supposedly still out for a while. Good for the tank, but I feel bad for Dunn. Hopefully he gets better and in the meantime we lose games because Jerian Grant is sucking it up (like usual). This team is unwatchable with Grant at the point. He is the tank commander. -

This seemed like a good trade for the Pistons. Clippers were in no mans land and had to make these moves (no cap space going forward) and a guy who is a great player when healthy (Griffin) but who has demonstrated an inability to stay healthy. Like it for Pistons a lot though. Mainly because I don't think they could attract a player like Blake via FA. -

QUOTE (Quin @ Jan 29, 2018 -> 10:59 AM) Swap TT for Love and maybe the Cavs think about it. Otherwise nah. Yes, this seems much more plausible. -
I just want to say I'm glad Brady made a point to that radio host about his daughter. Ridiculous.

How much longer is Dunn out? I don't mind all this losing while he is out...as long as Lavine eventually gets things right. Wouldn't want him to struggle for a really really long time because than it makes it a much more difficult decision to process (given he is going to be a RFA this year). -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2018 -> 03:46 PM) 2 and a half seasons from now? That's a long wait to keep cap space available. They'll have to let guys like Lavine and Dunn go. I presume it would be via trade. I imagine by next trade deadline AD is dealt. Losing Cousins has a huge impact on their future, imo. -

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Jan 26, 2018 -> 08:47 AM) He gave the same type of contract to Ferentz. Frankly though, i'm not sure why people are complaining. Both guys are good coaches. Ferentz has fallen the last few years, but for a while there he had Iowa football at or near its best in the program's history. McCaffrey had a good run just a couple of years ago. As an Iowa fan, I think it is hilarious how everyone is ripping Fran to shreds. He's a good coach. His defense leaves components to be desired but they have a lot of reasons for this years struggles. Every year under him Iowa has gotten better (up until this year). That said, I think I'm a realist (vs. so many fans who are delusional). -
Brewers Acquire Christian Yelich & sign Lorenzo Cain
Chisoxfn replied to GGajewski18's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Am I mistaken or is the Cain signing a pretty fair deal for the Brewers? I presume there is risk on the back-side (given age, etc) but early on, given his recent production (when he's healthy) he's been a 5 WAR+ guy which at $16M per year feels reasonable. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 23, 2018 -> 01:38 PM) I agree, I'm not saying Hoiberg is popovich but I think Kawhi would fare very well in this offense. I would assume mirotic isn't there but especially on lineups like dunn-lavine-leonard-markannen-mirotic. It feels weird, but I literally don't have a bad thing to say about Hoiberg right now. I've came to the realization that with the team of personalities we had and with the switch and how we switched from Thibs that pretty much any coach (outside of a really proven champion such as Phil or Pop) would have failed. It just wasn't feasible. An unproven NBA coach wasn't going to get that ship right and deal with what had to be done. This year, with Fred being given a blank slate (from a personality perspective) it has enabled him to get buy in from top-to-bottom and truly implement his scheme, etc. We finally get to see him actually coach. I will admit part of a coaches job is to adapt but I think I downplayed just how bad of a situation Fred was put in (and that isn't Fred's fault). Amazing what a year makes since I became pretty anti Hoiberg very early in his coaching tenure (to now have a 180). While I absolve Fred of the past two years, I don't necessarily absolve the front office because they should have had that level of awareness. -

QUOTE (Sox-35th @ Jan 23, 2018 -> 01:28 PM) Yeah, I'm not sure Hoiberg would know what to do with Leonard, anyway. They'd have to blow up the whole thing again and hire a new coach. I would think Leonard would fit in perfectly and fill a major void by providing strong wing D (which when combined with Dunn would allow Lavine to focus more on the offense). Leonard would be an outstanding get and I'd be all over getting him. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 23, 2018 -> 08:42 AM) Should WR be the #1 target for the Bears in round 1? Or OL, or DB? OLB is a legit option, imo. I'd probably rank it OLB (i.e., pass rusher) / WR. DB fits the bill but my gut says it will be one of the other two positions. We could go oline and in general I imagine if we go oline / wr we have traded down.
