Damn I remember the first time I heard McVay interviewed in LA, I thought to myself...this guy is dynamic. I'm starting to get that same feel out of Nagy.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 11:28 AM) I know they were thinking about having Trubisky part of the coaching interviews. I am glad they didn't. I think it puts way too much pressure on him at that point. He has enough to deal with at this point. If he were in the league a few years and had a couple of Pro Bowls, then I could see it. I completely agree with you. Find the right man for the job. With the Rams, everyone wanted to see and get more feel for Goff because no one really believed in him based upon what he showed in that 1st season. I think the perception of Trubisky is different (doesn't mean he pans out) but league wide perception is fairly positive on Trubisky. Also helps that Nagy had spent time and evaluated Trubisky within the draft process as well. Trubisky's skill-sets seem to be a very good fit for Nagy's system.

Passion just oozes out of this guy. Interesting that they did not have Trubisky part of the process but Nagy raved about the day they spent with Trubisky when they were doing the draft stuff. Trubisky saw Nagy today.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 11:14 AM) Mirotic showcasing at the 5 instead of the 3 was so helpful for his trade value. It's what sets him apart from Lopez. Lopez is a good basketball player but when you look at the contenders, few have a need for a mostly post-up C, even as he's tried to stretch out. The ability to put Lauri and Mirotic at the 4 and 5 though is a really interesting and tough match up in the NBA and a great fit for Hoiberg's offense. I would love to see a bigger test case as to how well that could work. It isn't like you have many real C's who could even push Mirotic around. -

One thing I'm interested in is whether we should move Mirotic or Lopez. I presume most will say just move both, but if the goal of the trade is largely motivated to maximize our current year draft pick, could you get extra run with Niko (to see how he pairs with Lauri and whether he really is a different player) while still struggling purely by moving Lopez for picks? I also wonder if you have any issues with the message sent to the team (who is playing hard, developing, etc). Not an easy situation given the fact we are here because our young guys have taken steps forward faster then anyone could have expected (which is a good thing). Consistent losing is freaking toxic. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 10:54 AM) David KaplanVerified account @thekapman 7h7 hours ago Source tells me the Indianapolis Colts were all in on hiring Matt Nagy. Uncertainty on health of Andrew Luck vs Mitchell Trubisky + Nagy’s belief the Bears roster is much better made decision for him. “Pace landed him by convincing him sunny days are ahead for the Bears.” I read a few people say that all the coaches that met with Pace were really impressed with him. I'm really hoping somehow at the press conference they announce Fangio but I doubt it.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 10:29 AM) I feel like Fangio is kinda in the stage of life where he's his own man, is just there to coach some D and be left alone, and so I don't really know where that puts him. Maybe just some place he wants to live more. I think he wants to be a head coach. So while I think he enjoys Chicago and would benefit from having Nagy (and not a defensive guy like Fox) next to him, he also knows being with the Packers means you are going to be a playoff team every year and if your defense does decent, you are going to get a call to be a HC. Of course Don Capers was once thought of as an outstanding DC, so not sure what happened to him in Green Bay. Is it a coach issue or a talent issue (or even just an investment in the defense issue...as in they don't invest enough in their defense).
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 10:20 AM) If he is comfortable in Chicago and paid well, he probably stays. I'm sure thought of putting together even a half decent defense in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers means he gets a shot at winning the Super Bowl is something he will have to think about. Yep - Being in playoffs and having an opportunity for rebuilt defense gives him a very good chance at being a head coach (imo).

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 09:20 AM) It really is jarring after so much of my life watching nearly everything work out perfectly for the lakers to see this completely endless pathetic rebuild by them. The Lakers are a disaster. Our core is so much better. LA still has the ability to be a big lure in free agency but you have to have a good team around them to really hit on the stars. They are an utter disaster. LBJ going there will change everything but I'd argue our core is as good as any rebuilding core in the league. Please note that doesn't mean I'm saying we have some star-studded destiny cause we don't and I am perfectly okay moving Mirotic for good assets and hopefully ensuring we hit a top 5 pick (and as I've said, I think Gar/Pax are about as good as there is at drafting so all things considered I'm fine with them making those picks). -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2018 -> 09:08 AM) It's more that Pace modeled (verbally) his ideal of making the Bears the Ted Thompson Packers which is now showing to be an obsolete model. Hopefully he is moving on and more open to Free Agent risks. Also here is a great Dan Durkin article for those subscribed to the athletic: https://theathletic.com/206764/2018/01/09/w...o-other-option/ I actually very much like our model. You can't get yourself burned in free agency but you need to play in it. We've missed at times in free agency and Pace has specifically said it is an area that you need to get better, but if you can't hit and win in the draft you are going to be in trouble. Additionally, as it relates to the Jaguars they had played big in free agency for a while without winning. Heck, look at the Eagles/Redskins who had a number of years of being offseason champions without showing a ton for it. I think the key is in how you structure the deals to protect yourself and take calculated risks which won't cripple you down the road and Pace has surprised me in terms of how he has managed the cap (given how bad the Saints managed it) and I think that is a testimate to Cliff Stein and probably even ole Ted Phillips.

Crazy that Nagy is only the 2nd offensive coach the Bears have hired since the merger. Trestman was the other, so lets hope Nagy works out better than that, haha. I'm pretty darn excited about the future of the offensive ball. When we hired Trestman I wanted Andy Reid and now we get a Reid disciple. I think Reid's offense is really interesting and QB friendly and while Nagy has limited play-calling, he seems to have the respect of his units and was innovative in how they rolled out the offense. Especially like the use of the run-option as much as they did as that should play into Trubisky's strengths (and Howard is a fantastic runner out of the shotgun which is where you'd run a lot of run-option). The key of course is I don't want to get our QB unnecessarily killed. The fact that Nagy kept in touch with Trubisky and believed in Trubisky obviously helped as Pace has hitched his wagon on Trubisky and thus would obviously want his HC to have the same stance. Any word on how long Nagy's contract will be? Can we keep Fangio already....haha. If we don't, we need to know quick so we can get a good assistant. It looks like Packers will be interviewing Pettine (who would be a good hire) and are clearly interested in interviewing Vic (and will definitely be reaching out to him once his contract expires). Bengals tried and were blocked (and are now hiring Lions DC, Terryl Austin, which is an excellent hire).
-
I keep hoping to see Bears sign Fangio to long-term extension. I'd really get fired up if that happened. Very pleased with the move and what seemed like the strategic direction and path we took to execute. I was hoping we were going to be the team that moved swiftly once we found that guy and it seemed we did that (critical given how many openings are out there).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 8, 2018 -> 10:50 AM) It is also nice to see guys growing up a bit. I don't know if it is the change in the lockerroom or Hoiberg maturing as a coach, but guys are getting better. That is huge all by itself. I think it has a lot to do with having a more open lockeroom. The reality was the situation Hoiberg walked in to was much more difficult then any of us initially presumed. You had Rose who had fallen apart, Noah who was breaking down, and with that guys who had a lot of different loyalties. Butler clearly played a role in that too and then you fast forward to his second year and it didn't get much better with a team that wasn't designed at all for Hoiberg's offense. -

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 8, 2018 -> 10:44 AM) One thing as a fan that is easier to like in this group from last group, with the giant caveat of when BOBBY BROKE NIKOS FACE is that most of the young and new guys are super supportive of each other in media. There's no cutting down rookies or trying to throw excuses up, they have gotten away from last years crap of Jimmy and Wade throwing rooks under the bus and Rondo stepping up for them. Example: K.C. Johnson Verified account @KCJHoop 17m17 minutes ago More Kris Dunn, on whether it will be an adjustment for Bulls when Zach LaVine returns: "Zach is not a selfish player. He takes the right shots. If he sees somebody open, he’s going to pass the ball. It’s all about playing the right way." This team, since Niko came back, is extremely likeable (if you pull off your negative biases and just watch). They have been a really fun team to watch play and you are right, the way the young guys fit is just awesome. Look at the Lakers...they are a disaster right now...disaster Dunn is awesome though...has a ton of intensity but seems to fit well with others but also try to push everyone to be great. Hoiberg is a guy I blasted for a couple years but him and his staff have done an excellent job and again I still say the Bulls front office has done well. They were the franchise that actually picked up Lauri and believed in their reports on Dunn (it bit them with Payne but seemed to work with Dunn). I still don't like the Jordan Bell selling of the pick but even when you look at Portis / Valentine, I argue they got good value based upon where they picked. Finding Nwaba from the Lakers (was another good move). -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 8, 2018 -> 09:54 AM) of course, but the bears did not allow him to interview with the Bengals last week. So apparently they want him, and hopefully Nagy would want him. I dont see why Nagy wouldnt want him considering his track record, but who knows Its being reported that Dave Ragone will remain the QB coach I like this. Have heard a lot of really really good things about Ragone.

So there have been some rumblings that there is a myster candidate with the Bears. If there is, we may never know, but I'm going to guess it is Chris Peterson or Shaw.

Love this. Could turn into a nice chip to move at the deadline. -
https://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/breakouts...ck-castellanos/ I'm not going to lie, I would be on board getting him. Above is an interesting article talking about his most recent season and the breakout that didn't happen (albeit the underlying numbers might say that he actually made major strides and is even more due). Both positives / negatives in the article. Depends on if you believe how much is luck and whether he could enhance his launch angles.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 09:49 AM) I don't think we are disagreeing, but Nagy being familiar with Trubisky will allow him to show off exactly what he would do to take him to next level. Others can do that by looking at film too, but everyone is busy with playoffs, so it's a huge help for him. For good or bad, "how will you handle trubisky" will be the biggest question each of these guys need to answer. Agree with everything you say.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 4, 2018 -> 09:33 AM) McVay went on Rich Eisens show and talked about how he spent time in the interview process breaking down film with Goff and showing how he could help. That was essentially the reason he was hired. https://247sports.com/nfl/los-angeles-rams/...w-with-74900039 That is different then him being all in on Goff (which I thought you were implying). I agree that they tried to work with him. The Rams were sold on McVay because of just how electric he was. Supposedly he blew everyone away and his film sessions, etc, were just super impressive with what he said he brought. It wans't that they were convinced 100% he could turn Goff into a star...it was that they thought he was going to be the guy who could ultimately turn the right QB into a star (turns out Goff was that guy).
