Who the heck is Rakovic? 9th overall pick (Vonleh) traded for some guy I never heard of (and hopefully I never hear of him again haha). Yet another pick...4 years in the league (top 10) who has done absolutely nothing.

Mudiay...7th overall pick in the draft, in his 3rd year in the league and already relegated to the bench. A lot of people thought he was a value pick when he fell to 7th overall too. Still 21 so I like this move a lot for the Knicks (who got Mudiay).

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 11:10 AM) I mean, I think the main issue with IT is he has to be on a team that has incredibly strong team defense and there are few of those. He is an absolute wreck on D. Cavs are going to find out Jordan Clarskon isn't much better, but yes, Thomas sucks on D.

Isiah Thomas is supposedly going to stronghold the Lakers and not show-up. Refuses to play off the bench. Might force a "buyout". I feel awful for Thomas, whose value was destroyed because he gave it his all in the post-season. Just think about if he went Derrick Rose...he'd probably have been healthy this year, had another strong year, and got paid a lot of money. Now he's going to be looking at such a smaller contract in the off-season.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 11:01 AM) When Lebron leaves after this year, they were going to suck anyway. This at least gives them some sort of chance this year, maybe GS gets a lot of injuries during the playoffs and the Cavs can pull it out, but they keep the better pick. And they cut bait on a lot of blah. DRose and Wade gone is addition by subtraction in my book, and IT wasn't working with Lebron. And if the moves work and they win...I think Lebron might stay....otherwise you are right, he's 100% gone. I like the fact that it seems they aren't catering to him and are instead making moves to bring in the best basketball players that they can. I still think the Bulls will make a quiet attempt at LBJ in the off-season (there is no reason they shouldn't). No matter how much of a diva he is, he immediately gives your team a chance to contend for a title.

I'm interested in seeing what Cleveland looks like. I don't think they did bad in the trades. All a matter of how Lebron reacts. From a pure talent perspective, they upgraded in every single deal (with exception of maybe that Lakers trade). Cleveland can no longer trade the Nets 1st round pick (prior to the draft) since they don't have a pick in 2019 (and traded this year's pick to Lakers). Unless of course they get an unprotected 1st round pick back in a deal.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 10:49 AM) I don't get, at all, the Utah Jazz portion of these trades. I thought maybe joe Johnson's contract was still bad. Nope, it's expiring. A team like the Jazz will get the most out of Crowder for sure...but what? What on earth? I think this does show that rumor that the pelis would have dumped that first with asik for anyone was b.s. 1sts are not flying around at all, let alone ones that could be earlier than the 20s. My belief is that MLB has an over infatuation with prospects and that the moneyball undervalue concept actually applies to prospects and that if you were going to follow money ball today, prospects are the new "walk/obp" concept. In basketball, 1st round picks have never been more overvalued than today (in this era of the tank). Delusions everywhere about the true value of a pick. Teams who are smart can buy so much talent without giving up that much in the process. If the Sox were ready, in this current era of baseball, they are literally designed for the Ken Williams concept of leveraging prospets for proven talent and than using free agency to go bargain hunting on shorter term deals. Ken Williams would kill if this roster was ready (and I see the Sox taking this approach once the "roster" is ready for it). It's going to be fun.

I can't really blame Ballard...I bet 95% of the time they make announcements before the deal is actually inked. It is probably standard operating procedure (once you get the "okay we are good", you move forward). Every once in a while, it will bite you. The Mcginnis one was on the Bears because they hadn't received the "okay" prior to announcing the deal...they were actually still negotiating. With McDaniels, negotations were done and he gave the go. He is still entitled to back out, etc (and he'll have to deal with those repercussions). I can't see anything wrong with what Ballard has done and I think the gesture to stick by the coaches was the right one by the Colts org.

What a coup by the Lakers. Fantastic move. Edit: Note, didn't realize it was just the Cavs pick (and not the better pick). Crazy what the Cavs are doing.

QUOTE (JenksIsMyHero @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 08:58 AM) Lebron shaping his 2018-2019 roster in LA I doubt it. I presume it is Randle and Clarkson headed to Cleveland and maybe they are getting that pick. Would be a great move for the Lakers (imo).

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 08:28 AM) They get a 2nd round swap in 2022 Yep...very minor move and unlikely to mean anything other than the slight cash savings, but I'm fine with it (as long as they don't plan on having Willie Reed around for long). Or are we about to swap out the veteran Leadership of Lopez (in a separate trade) and replace it with Reed? I really don't want to just dump Lopez.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 8, 2018 -> 08:24 AM) Bulls trade Jameer Nelson to Detroit for C Willie Reed, who is serving a 6 day suspension for domestic violence. They sure do everything in their power to make it difficult to root for the bulls. Wasn't this just a salary dump. I presume Bulls are dumping Reed?

Prices in markets are up...but supply is not high. I can't comment on the Chicago market in particular, but in our market prices are up extensively but supply is at extremely low levels.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 03:00 PM) FWIW, I think the net result of the tax package will be the exact opposite, bringing a recession sooner. There is still some room for growth in the economy before full employment is reached, but the government dumping another $500 billion into the economy this year will make things heat up much more quickly. Basically all of the recent recessions have been triggered in part by the federal reserve overtightening once things actually begin to heat up enough to cause wage growth, so the net result of dumping in funds now through the tax cuts is going to be the Fed slamming harder on the breaks, and that is our recession trigger. So it will lead to more rapid growth in the short term, but it will also accelerate the next slowdown. I don't disagree with anything you said as I think it is consistent, especially the macro statements to what I was implying (short-term win that won't necessarily correlate to longer term gain). I do believe it extends the current cycle (vs. nothing) but that doesn't mean long-term it is a good thing. I am not comparing it to how it would perform vs. alternative tax plans either. But if they get meaningful infrastructure bills in...it will just be another thing that adds to the shorter term gains (and I very much am a proponent on infrastructure spend as a whole as it is something we drastically need to do and figure out). The key to all of my argument though is very much tied to infrastructure plans. Either way, I don't see the market blowing up in the next year. It very much could, but it isn't because it is massively overpriced. A blow up near term would be geopolitical in nature, imo.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 01:29 PM) Whatever the excuse is, a market correction is long overdue. And honestly I would hope that today is a deadcat bounce instead of a real rally, as we are still pretty overbought to see the kind of intraday swing we saw today. I believe you couldn't be more wrong. Yes, people can point at the highs of where the market is but the fundamentals just don't support being overdue for a mass correction and for a real market correction you have to have a "driver" for such correction and if that driver is out there, I don't see it right now. Even the tax cuts, while I can debate the actual impact on them, is just another thing that will (at least temporarily) push out a recession (more so if it is combined with an infastructure proposal) . I might debate long-term implications and overall effectiveness of tax reform.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 12:11 PM) The DOW is now up 500 pts. Makes sense to me. Markets just aren't that inflated right now and I'd bet pretty fairly that (barring a political disaster / major war / etc) that 2018 will be a year of solid growth in the markets (I didn't say gangbusters). My gut tells me another 2 years before a mild recession.

QUOTE (soxfan49 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 12:23 PM) Kelly got another chance after Philadelphia I wouldn't really call his tenure in San Francisco another chance. He had no QB and was given one year before a total cleanse happened and it was immediately after the Philly thing (to where he hadn't had a chance to learn). Chip is an innovative guy who will excel at UCLA and have another shot at going to the NFL (shall he so choose).

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Feb 6, 2018 -> 10:30 AM) Ranking the NFL head-coaching hires from 1 to 6 This article has aged well..... Technically Chip Kelly and Doug Pederson won this superbowl. They run a lot of that Eagles offense (especially for Foles). Kelly's concepts were great, his ego was just too huge and he couldn't deal with the pro's. I think if he was given another shot he might excel. They got McAdoo right. I probably shouldn't say that cause I am not implying that Pederson didn't do a heck of a job cause he and his staff (and the front office) all did an awesome job in Philly. That team came together beautifully.
