  1. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 08:42 AM) They dont have the chips. Bradley Jr + is not a bad place to start.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 28, 2017 -> 04:22 PM) I heard there is no way Fangio will be the Bears interim HC. Supposedly there are some higher ups, and I don't know who, who feel like Fangio doesn't like them. They are counting the days until he is gone. Yeah, Gabriel and Lemming have both indicated Fangio is not on Pace's list of potential head coaching candidates. Gabriel went on to say that Pace wouldn't want to ax Fox and give it to Fangio because if he does well, there would be more pressure to hire a guy he doesn't want.
  3. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 28, 2017 -> 02:30 PM) Eh. Belicheck was a DC and his team has been one of the best offensively for years. Mora (DC) was the HC when Manning came into the league. Kevin Gillbride (OC) was Leaf's HC. Its more important to find the best HC, irrespective of whether they are offensive or defensive. Probably some truth in that, but If all things are equal, with the young QB, I'm going with an offensive guy. If we hired Toub though or someone who we thought was just a fantastic guy, then so be it.
  4. At the time Belicheck was hired they had an outstanding defense and a veteran QB. He happened to get lucky and get Tom Brady and the rest is history, but it wasn't like he was hired to take over a team with a young QB who you had invested a ton in. I'm not opposed to hiring defensive coaches. I think for teams who are investing in a young QB, hiring a bright offensive mind to ensure you have a consistent offensive strategy is critical. If you go defensive, you are essentially dependent on your OC sticking around (since you yourself don't have your own "scheme").
  5. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 28, 2017 -> 01:59 PM) I dont think the HC matters that much. If anything it may be better to have a HC that isnt as involved in the offense and have an OC who is very established. Too many times HC's who are also OC's can lose focus. I think it is more that the OC can always be hired away, so you want someone with a philosphy and approach that is your head coach and has that building block / program for the QB. He doesn't need to be the OC, etc, but with a young QB, you need stability and if you hire a defensive guy as your HC and hire a top assistant at OC and in one year Trubisky makes progress, that guy might be a HC somewhere else and now Trubisky is onto his 3rd system. That is just not a risk I'm willing to take.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 28, 2017 -> 12:27 PM) Bears Insider‏ @bears_insider 14m14 minutes ago Sources: #Bears already have list of names to replace John Fox potential head-coaching candidates and Vic Fangio isn’t one of them To be honest, this shouldn't surprise us. If we are hiring someone, given we invested in a QB, we should be hiring the person we think is going to maximize Trubisky and that inevitably will be an offensive mind.
  7. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 10:06 AM) There's an interesting team at #1 here... ESPN: Finding the best spot for Giancarlo Stanton I've long agreed with this logic (as long as the price was in terms of $'s and not high-end prospects).
  8. QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 12:44 PM) $8M a year for that. I know the money is changing in the NBA but it's unbelievable. They guy was a nobody prospect who was decent in a small role in an injury riddled team. I just couldn't see him getting $20 million on the free market. Unbelievable. I wouldn't be so quick to trop Porter out of 1-2 with his health in mind. I actually think on the open market he probably gets something close to what the Bulls offered (if not better). He wasn't that bad in past years. It looks to me that he just isn't comfortable with the new system / players or he didn't put in the work after getting the contract. He's worse at all levels and much less active too. Not that he was ever uber talented. Contracts now a days are just brutal.
  9. QUOTE (ptatc @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) This is the real issue. Even with the poor talent at WR, he wasn't accurate enough to give them the chance to drop the ball. His accuracy was supposed to be the thing that separated him from the others. He hasn't shown it so far. Maybe he can't read it soon enough or is pressured too much. There are a variety of reasons but he hasn't shown much yet. I agree with you completely. His footwork has been awful as he just hasn't been comfortable. If you aren't ready to read defenses, you aren't really going to be natural in your throwing motions, etc. Eyes are head of the feet / rest of the body and he's really learning (and in an uphill battle). It goes back to what Fox and company were saying originally...he wasn't ready to play. But at some point, glennon was so bad that they decided they'd push it and give Trubisky reps sooner.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 10:01 AM) It is tough to blame this all or even mostly on coaching. This roster lacks premium talent, and they completely lack depth. If everything went right and no one at the top of the roster got hurt, it was a borderline playoff team. But with any injuries to key guys, this roster was f***ed. They need players and they need stars badly. The things I blame on coaching (or put more on coaching) go back to the fact that we make a lot of unforced errors / mistakes. Too many penalties, etc. That said, I don't think we are a playoff team with Belicheck either. The roster just has too many issues, especially after the injuries. The rot ran deep on the roster and throughout the organization and there has been a cultural shift / improvement under Fox...but the reality is, he has his issues, but you really can't pin it all on him and we very well could take steps backwards if we go to someone else (as Fox has proven he can win with good talent...that isn't / shouldn't be a question). He's a better coach then most coaches the Bears have had over the last 30 years. Is he an elite coach, probably not, but he's a good to very good coach. That said, he might not be the right coach to bring the Bears on the next step of the journey. What he isn't awesome at is game planning though. The lack of penalties is another bad thing that ultimately falls on him, but certainly doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies (in regards to Loggains). That said, lots of injuries / personnel issue impact things too (and players are also responsible).
  11. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 08:49 AM) I didn't think Fox would ever be great but I didn't think he'd be this bad. Roster helps...but I really don't like how often we've shot ourselves in the foot. Not all on Fox, but it starts at the top.
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 05:10 AM) Brady had guys like Moss, Welker, Gronk, Deion Branch, Aaron Hernandez, Amendola that have all produced very well with him. And Brady certainly didn’t have “it” right off the bat, he was a game manager and Belicheck schemed to beat every team around a good defense. Parkman clearly seems to believe that elite QBs make the WRs and even bums can look great under the elites. Not gonna bother trying to change his mind I actually agree with the premise that in general, Brady and Favre had supbar weapons playing with them. Yes, at times they had really good players and Gronk is clearly an elite talent, but compared to Peyton Manning, who had all-time greats or Steve Young (Rice / Owens)....Favre / Brady didn't have a lot. They had more then Trubisky / Bears have though.
  13. QUOTE (Tony @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 09:41 PM) So here’s the thing.....None of this matters. Mitch Trubisky is going to get at least three years of starts before a move is made. Judging him based on a handful of starts means NOTHING. Zero. There is literally not a single reason, outside of having a message board debate, on making a judgment on who Mitch Trubisky is. You have no idea. The Bears have no idea. NFL scouts have no idea. HE has no idea. You’re rushing to judgment because...I don’t know why, but there is no reason to do it. You want to have this conversation in after the 2019 season? Fine. After 7 starts? Come on, man. Next year, after a full-offseason, and hopefully a revamped offense, we'll get a better idea. I expect Mitch to put in massive work, watch lots of film, and learn from the experience he got this year. With that, I expect him to work heavily on his footwork, but some of that will improve naturally as he reads defenses, better, etc. Right now, he's a tick slow on everything and with that timing and footwork is off too. Jared Goff is a great example as he was a guy who had to learn the NFL a lot and had really bad footwork his rookie season only to make massive improvements with experience. Even then, we will be heading into a new offensive system. I think in hindsight, we probably should have cut the cord with Fox a year ago (and I've been a Fox defender), but if we were going to draft a young QB, I want consistency in schemes, specifically the offensive side, and with that, I want an offensive minded head coach who can drive that from the top-down. I still have Mike McCarthy high on my list (for that reason...if the Packers were to move on). McDaniels could deserve a 2nd shot and the Eagles OC has to be pretty high on lists. We need to invest a brain trust around Trubisky and work on enabling success. We have running backs to help, but he needs weapons and a good system (with consistency) so he can develop, grow, and eventually thrive. Sean Payton would have been great...but the Saints surprising resurgence takes Payton off the list.
  14. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 07:26 PM) Lol...there is literally no way to fairly evaluate Mitch this season due to the s***ty play-calling and the worst WR group in Bears history. We’ll all just have to wait until next year assuming Pace decides WR is actually a position of importance. I've defended Fox and Loggains a lot and I do think this team has major limitations. I agree with DA in terms of how we handled Jeffrey. Losing him was just brutal (I recognize he didn't want to be here, but taking the cap hit and franchising him would have been fine with me, purely for the sake that we put this roster in a position where our QB's would have a difficult time succeeding). You can't predict injuries, but literally, we entered the preseason with one of the worst corps in the league and only got worse from there. The Jeffrey move was also just a bad handling of an asset (as if we didn't think we'd want him / he didn't want to be here, we should have moved him at the deadline last year). Either way, I'm hoping Pace can learn from some of his negatives (as there definitely have been some)...and build on the positives (as I do think he's largely drafted well...based upon early returns...White being the major exception). And while he's had his free agency misses, none of have been massive cap problems, which I'll take as a positive and he has hit on some guys. I really liked the Inman deal as well...having him and Meredith (if he can come back) will very much help the overall depth of the receiving corps.
  15. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 25, 2017 -> 09:55 AM) Lol I think everyone saw this outcome coming for Nebby, just a terrible hire. Great time for Scott frost to take over.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 02:49 PM) I keep seeing the beat guys say if Fox is fired and Fangio isn't named the head coach, he will not be with the Bears next year. For all you posters who know more about football than I do, if they do get a new DC it really has to be a 3-4 guy doesn't it? Wouldn't going back to a 4-3 screw them up for at least a season or 2? Yep. At this point I can’t see any reason to justify getting ong away from 3-4. If we were about to enter into a rebuild sure, but we should be about to exit a rebuild. I still think Fox gets a raw deal from most bear fans. I can’t think of many coaches who would excel with the hand he was dealt and the approach taken. No one was winning a bunch of games with this roster. Players have developed under his watch and the culture has been good. By no means is he perfect but he’s clearly a solid coach.
  17. QUOTE (Tony @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 09:04 PM) That’s kind of my point. Basically taking away a year of development from a 20 year old can wreck a career, and it’s not on Basabe, but the team. No real loss to them, but the player just missed out on 500 PA’s in Single A and instead sat on a ML bench all year. That’s not right to the player. The player does get a major league salary for the full-year (which might compensate for the lost development / ab's). Not sure which is ultimately more valuable to the individual.
  18. You know what worries me about Cooter (Lions OC), the stat that they haven't had a 100 yard rusher in 60+ games. How is that even possible? I truly believe that to win in this league, you need to be able to run the football (especially somewhere like Chicago). It isn't like the Lions haven't invested in running backs (they've draft a decent number of them).
  19. Thank you. even if Santos misses a few kicks while he gets healthy, I'm willing to be patient.
  20. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 09:43 AM) Unless wheaton absolutely explodes in the next 5 weeks he is a goner. He is gonna get 5M next season, and he has one catch and i believe 3 drops, and has been injured for all but three games this season. I agree he's a goner, I just want to see more weapons for Trubisky to throw to (to get a better idea of his growth, etc).
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 09:34 AM) I have to wonder how much is development. The Browns have actually done what you are supposed to do the last decade. THey have picked a lot, made good trades for picks. They've...drafted a lotta garbage. They've drafted a lot of garbage, but they've also had a consistent turnover in their front offices. New regimes have strong biases towards their players so if you are consistently changing regimes you are consistently turning over entire rosters, which just makes things so much harder to succeed. The best franchises have had long-term stability. Sometimes I legitimately wonder how much "smarter" the better franchises are then the others or if it is more they are just more patient and think more "long". You really put yourself at a disadvantage when you are consistently kicking people to the curb. Look at the Bengals (and yes, they suck this year), but they stuck with Marvin Lewis and their franchise was largely stabilized (especially relative to what it was). The Raiders could have axed Reggie McKenzie (and while they are having a bad year), early in McKenzie's tenure, they decided to stick with him and give him the "long" play and while the Raiders are struggling this year, their long-term track outlook still looks pretty positive.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 08:39 AM) They'll go top 5, but after we picked Trubisky people were saying we should have waited and tanked this year because at that time this was considered a possible 2003 QB draft. They'll be drafted high because the best QBs always do, but I don't think people feel they are can't miss like they used to. Agree with everything you said. I'm perfectly fine with Trubisky. He seems to be learning and that is a good thing. He needs a boot camp to get his footwork corrected when under pressure but he was so much better against pressure this week then any previous week. Lions D isn't that good, but he actually had a pretty high completion rate under duress this week and he got rid of the ball much quicker at times. Helped that Kyle Long was back (outside of that awful penalty). Marcus Wheaton was actually open those two bad throws from Trubisky...would be nice to get a Wheaton sighting as he has talent (imo). Inman makes the receiving corps so much better (not that it says much). They at least have two wideouts who are NFL players now (not counting Wheaton who has not been able to stay on the field). Any updates on White...we should see him back to practice pretty quick (if he has a chance at getting out there). Shaheen actually got me excited...showed some solid hands and playmaking ability. Also saw him make a couple nice blocks.
  23. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 20, 2017 -> 08:25 AM) The first thing they did in their press conference after getting home was to thank Trump. That the President is begging for this sort of validation is still beyond pathetic. The rest of the world knows how petty and easily influenced he is if you just puff up his ego a bit. I agree with this, but Lavar Ball was ridiculous (not that it should surprise anyone).
