QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 12:19 PM) Adam Jahns @adamjahns 15m15 minutes ago League source suggests that Brian Gaine could be Ernie Accorsi's top recommendation for #Bears, especially with Parcells connections. On a sidenote, I'm not all that intrigued with Gaine. I don't exactly view the Dolphins organization and what they have done over the past 6 years to be anything to write home about. Again, I might be making too broad of an assumption but I don't get as excited about him. Of course you could say the same thing about the Bears organization where Ballard spent his time but at least during part of that tenure we were, on paper, arguably the best team in the NFL (too bad the results never backed that). I also don't get that excited about guys out of the Belliceck mold. By and large, they have failed on their own. Probably because Tom Brady would make anyone look good. Dude is incredible. -

Code for...someone goes, Ernie will probably recommend someone who was affiliated with someone he worked with, I think they'll do that. It would be like someone knowing, Jason likes steak, I think he's going to order a steak at a restaurant tonight. Yeah, maybe I will, but maybe I won't. I think all of these reports are probably inaccurate / premature (including the Ballard offered report) -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 10:01 AM) Dude was gimpy in 2012/13 and last year there was no Kobe. Before that, his time with the Lakers and Kobe was outstanding and included two championships. He's a phenomenal player who's aging quite well! Lets hope he continues to age well!!!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 09:48 AM) Apparently not in one with a legendary ballhog. Kobe loved Pau. Pau loved Kobe. Pau hated D'Antoni.Lakers had crap. Pau moved to greener pastures.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 09:45 AM) One look at his efficiency numbers tells you that Gasol this year hasn't been leaps and bounds better than Gasol with the Lakers in the past 2. Gasol's shooting 48% this year, he shot 48% last year. His TS% is .540 this year, it's been in the .520 range the past two years. He's getting to the line a bit more this year, but in terms of actually shooting the ball, he's not any better. His rebounding rates are better, especially on offense, which helps his ORtg a bit. Prime Gasol once led the league in ORtg and had a TS% around .600. This isn't that guy and he'll never be that guy again. But I'm fine with it. I just don't think he's this team's MVP. That title belongs to Butler. Who said Gasol is the team MVP? He's been a great addition and is deserving of an all star game but the teams best player is currently Butler. That said, what Gasol brings on the court (and off the court) is huge.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 09:43 AM) Fixed. A versatile big man who sees the floor, blocks shots, and scores at will fits anywhere. Tell that to Mike D'Antoni.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 09:05 AM) Ted and George may have passed on Ballard, but Emery hired Trestman. Im not gonna hold that against them, they hired Emery to hire a coach, and let him do it I just want this process to finish, I want to know what to look forward to (or dread) Agree. I like the fact that by all accounts, Ballard is a people person and a very good salesmen who knows how what he likes and how to sell it. I think that can be critical when it comes to getting the right people to come work for you as well as bringing in the right FA's, etc. -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 08:53 AM) I liked Angelo a lot and I think he lost a power struggle with Lovie which reflects poorly on the Bears organization as Lovie is not a personnel guy and will never win in Tampa. If he stuck to coaching he would be fine. I understand what you are saying and they may be homerun selections but the fact that they both were passed over for Emery and Trestman by Ted and George leads me to be a little weary of them being able to make the proper decisions. It could work and it could just as easily blow in their face. Wasn't Ditka a special teams coach at Dallas, well there you go. Fair enough. I also think that in the end of the day, a lot of this comes down to pure luck to some extent. Do you hit on some of your picks early, etc. I know that might not be the popular answer, but I can think of the times teams didn't hire the guy they want and instead got someone else and it ended up working far better. Trojan fans were irate when Pete Carroll was hired, look at them now. Wolverine fans couldn't have had a better hire than Brady Hoke...now they couldn't have gotten a better hire than Harbaugh. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 08:46 AM) FWIW, Marrone's interview with the Jets did not go very well. I think he will be a head coach somewhere next year, but I don't think this has gone as well for him as he envisioned. It really says something about the character of a guy who is willing to walk out on an extremely young and talented team that has, for the most part, one [major, glaring, gigantic] hole on the team. I agree. I am not interested in hiring him, at all. The way he left that organization rubs me the wrong way. -
RIP Stuart Scott. I have a few friends in the sports business and they had met and worked with Stuart Scott. Said he was nothing but amazing. Always willing to lend a hand to people wanting to work their way up and trying to show them the ropes, etc.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 07:54 AM) Plus Jimmy has one of the ultimate rags to riches stories in his background as well. The media loves that stuff. For example, last night, they focus in on what he did to hold Harden to something like 2 points in the 2nd half. Immediately, he gives credit to his teammates, etc, credits them for the team effort and everything. He literally says the right thing whenever I've heard him interviewed this year. He's the anti-Rose from that perspective.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 05:55 AM) I think Chris Ballard is the best candidate of the guys that are being interviewed. He does seem like more of the same though. Ballard has significant experience in both coaching and scouting and is extremely well thought off across the industry. We've had an outside group helping us in the process. It is all a crapshoot to some extent, but I just don't think people can ignore the fact that league wide, Angelo was and still is very widely respected for what he did in Tampa and Chicago. He has now went to another organization and worked with tremendous people and again is very well thought of and received in broad scale NFL circles. This is not the Bears hiring the person they are familiar with, this is the Bears hiring the best candidate, who happens to be someone they are also familiar with (which to be frank is a plus...cause without that familiarity, I don't know if he is taking this job). -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 09:29 PM) I'm not going to go all soxfest and complain that the Bears are going to continue on their losing ways like they did in the last 12 years, because in reality while Lovies tenure never got a super bowl trophy he did have a pretty successful run with a few pretty competitive teams. But I am pissed that they barely interviewed anyone. I was expecting Ballard after a charade of candidates coming through, not him being offered before anyone else gets talked to. That's total bulls***. You have to interview many people because sometimes you will be surprised and find a candidate you didn't expect. I have heard that Toub is head coach material though, he is very well respected around the league When it comes to a GM search, the preferred approach tends to be to have a smaller field of candidates coming in. We need to move quickly so bringing in 15 guys would be a very ineffective use of our time and put us seriously behind other teams in finding a head coach (not to mention good assistants). I think the field we have / will interview for the job is frankly the right size and includes pretty much all the candidates I would want (outside of the DeCosta who said no). -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 08:50 PM) So what changed, two years ago when George and ted were hiring guys they passed on both when they were employees. What am I missing here? Both guys were let go only to hire them back and both will they both come cheap. Remember when Wanny was the rock star hire. Lets be clear about one thing, neither Toub / Ballard were let go. They went on to other pastures on their own accord. Toub has been the most respected ST coach in the league for years. The jump from ST coach to NFL HC can be tough. In Ballard's case, he's the guy turning down interviews with other teams, probably because he prefers the job with an ownership group he has worked for in the past so he has a better idea of what to expect (vs. the unknown of some of the other organizations). Not to mention, in Philly, Kelly will have more say and in New York, I'm presuming Maronne will have some additional control. Chicago would appear to be the job that the top GM candidate would want due to the full-control being granted and the fact that you almost get a free pass with Cutler in year 1 (I presume we will keep him for a year and than make a decision on him after a new coaching staff is in place). Also, in regards to Ernie and Ted and George. They might have all had conversations and thought, I think Ballard is the best guy but these are some other very good candidates as well that you should meet. After you meet with them, if our expectations are confirmed, we'll hire Ballard. Nothing wrong with that and it happens all the time in the real world and is not a bad practice at all. Lets not act as if Ernie hasn't interacted with Ballard and even interviewed with most of these guys before, but with other teams (cause he has). I think outside of potential new candidates who came up on the list vs. previous years Ernie has been involved with other organizations, he already had a pretty good flavor for who was there and who he thinks are the best candidates, imo. -
QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 03:40 AM) I can't believe how good Butler is either. Just incredible all around. The face he is hitting jumpers consistently after the way he shot it last year is jaw dropping. I don't get why he isn't getting more media hype and love outside of Chicago. I know people are talking about him as an all star, etc, but he is also a pretty charismatic guy and great in front of the mic, imo. I hope he keeps taking this steps and really is an elite player. Would be awesome. Tremendous dude.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 09:07 PM) Smith is essentially Waiters, but more efficient, believe it or not. They badly need a strong perimeter defender, and Shumpert fits the bill. A combo of Lebron-Shumpert-Kyrie is more versatile than Lebron-Kyrie and Marion/Mike Miller. I don't get the deal for OKC. They didn't give up much for Waiters, but they have no use for the guy and the trade pretty much puts them over tax apron. I like it for the Knicks mainly. Any chance you have to get rid of someone like Smith you do it. And like I said, if I'm the Cavs, I'd just dump Smith and keep Shumpert. They have a toxic enough lockeroom right now, don't see how adding Smith is a wise decision. I'm sure I'll regret that statement as Smith hits some game winning three to knock the Bulls out of the playoffs.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 08:45 PM) But everyone should complain about Tony Snell and Marquis Teague. Those are more indicative of their drafting ability than Butler, Gibson, Mirotic, Noah and Rose. Is this sarcasm? I sure hope it is.

QUOTE (bshah723 @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 08:40 PM) Knicks didn't get Jackson. Oh, when I was driving in my car, ESPN radio reported that Jackson was going to the knicks. I heard that and was like, wow, that is incredible. I don't understand what the Cavs are doing. Maybe they are just going to cut Smith and figure Shumpert isn't a bad fit.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 04:16 PM) I've been on the Bowles bandwagon since very early in the season. As for the Toub idea, I'm not opposed to it either. The ST coach to Head Coach jump isn't that far of a stretch. Jim Harbaugh was a ST coach before his Ravens job. Marv Levy was a ST coach too. There aren't a ton of examples b/c the NFL puts such a huge emphasis on Offense and Defense (while Special Teams is routinely an afterthought), but Head Coaches need to be more manager types anyway. First, he's a leader. Anyone who can, year-in and year-out, bring together a group of random guys to consistently be the best in the league is someone who can lead. Sidenote: don't let the press fool you; DeCamillis isn't the only one who dealt with young players on special teams. Newsflash: that's how football (especially the NFL) works. You play young guys on STs. Toub got one guy ever year he could pick and then a bunch of other dudes. Secondly, of course, he would fix our abysmal special teams. And I do think that having been around as long as he has, he surely has some good connections for OC/DC positions. I agree with everything you said. And given I was on the DeCamillis sucks bandwagon from like the 3rd week of the 1st season, I certainly never bought any of those BS arguments, haha. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 06:28 PM) Waiters just got traded to OKC. OKC gave up nothing, Cavs get iman stumpers and jr smith Reggie Jackson is nothing? As far as I'm concerned, the Knicks robbed everyone blindly.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 11:37 AM) I initially wanted and offensive HC but the more I have heard on him and the more I have thought about it I am totally sold on Bowles. In fact, I will be really disappointed if they are not able to get him. Prepare to be disappointed. He's going to be the first guy grabbed, imo, and its going to happen fast. We don't offer the same package a 49ers or Falcons offer, so the key would be somehow getting our GM in place to at least make a pitch and hope he can sell them. All that said, I want our GM in first no matter what. They need to be comfortable with the head coach and our GM also has to be able to bring in good football people around him. I am also on board with the Toub idea, however, that is as long as he has the right coordinators in mind for the OC / DC position. He should know a lot of people through his years in the league so I presume it won't be an issue. -

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 5, 2015 -> 11:33 AM) Isn't that what Emery did with Trestman? I'm only half joking here. Working with Angelo isn't a bad thing, either. Angelo built a superbowl team during half of his tenure in Chicago and stuff got worse after the superbowl run when Lovie became more powerful. Angelo also had an extremely successful tenure in Tampa and was given a ton of credit for being the guy who built the Bucs. I realize the popular thing is to hate on Angelo but Angelo had a very successful career as an NFL executive. I also think stability is important in a franchise and I think we should be lucky that such a rockstar candidate happened to spend a significant portion of his time with Chicago to the point that he really wants to come here and our ownership has a level of comfort with him which might help make this a really long-term move, which would be exactly the type of thing that we will need to get this football team to levels it hasn't since in 30 years.
