  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:43 PM) Of course, if this guy isn't signable (and they might have some reason to think he would be for all I know), they could also gamble on a really tough sign or two later in the draft...if they can't sign this guy, then that could free up 3rd round money to throw at a guy in the 10th who they pick on a whim. Harder to do late, but I do expect them to take 1 or 2 guys in the teens that would have been top 5 round picks as back-up plans.
  2. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:42 PM) It's easy to get excited about this pick, but the moment to get excited is when (if, obviously) he signs. A lot of work to do. Its still early enough that they have a decent slot amount already in play plus overrages from elsewhere. This shouldn't be that too. Makes it less likely you can take a total home run on a really late round pick though.
  3. The only recent championship team that would have given the Bulls problems was the Lakers teams coached by Phil w/Shaq & Kobe. Bulls had absolutely no one that could stop Shaq and even during the latter years struggled greatly against those Lakers teams which fell short to Utah (thankfully cause they matched up great against the late 90 bulls squads). And I think all but the last of the Bulls championship squads beats those Laker teams. Definitely the early 90's bulls squads with Cartwright and Grant.
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:39 PM) Assuming they are playing without the handcheck foul, the Heat wouldn't put up 85 a game. And if they played with the handcheck foul, Jordan and Pippen would have had some massive games.
  5. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:34 PM) This is the type of pick I was alluding to when Marty was ripping our first picks. He may not be signable but there isn't a chance to sign him if we didn't make reaches earlier. I hope we throw big money at the this kid. The key to those moves are to get these guys. Sox should have some savings from the 1st 3 rounds (all of our picks should sign for under slot). I fully expect them to be able to sign the other guys that they will have to go above slot on. If they can't, it will make those bad picks as you can't be in the business of wasting picks this early in the draft.
  6. QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:29 PM) 6'03" 210lbs DOB: 02/27/95 | Scouting video Michalczewski plays shortstop at Jenks, but will almost certainly move to third base as a professional. He has a good approach at the plate and his bat speed allows him to let the ball get deep in the strike zone before starting to swing. Listed at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, Michalczewski already has good size and projects to have good power. While he is probably destined to move to the hot corner, he is a solid defender with a strong arm and should easily make the transition. Michalczewski is committed to Oklahoma. Switch Hitting 3rd baseman. Body: Michalczewski has a solid athletic frame. Physically he doesn’t have much more growing or filling out to do but he is a very physically strong player. He shows great agility and quickness. He has a strong lower half and rounded shoulders. Swing: Michalczewski has a slightly open stance with most of his weight on his bent back leg. He has his hands about shoulder high with loose grip and a slight bat wiggle. His load is a slight draw back of the hands and a slight weight shift to the back leg. When he strides, it is more towards the plate then the pitcher keeping his front side closed. His swing from the right side is a little longer but it is very fluid and shows quick hands. His swing from the left side shows great bat speed and is very direct to the ball. He shows the ability to hit for a good average and power from both sides of the plate. He shows a very good feel for hitting. Base running: Michalczewski has plus to above average speed with a 6.7 in the 60. He also shows very good base running skills. He has the ability to be a moderate base stealing threat. Defense: Michalczewski played all over the infield this season. It is my belief that he will end up settling in at 3B. He has good hands and good reactions to handle 3B. He shows a good strong arm but his footwork needs improvement for him keep under control. Summary: Trey Michalczewski is one of the must under the radar High School players. He has shown power and the ability to hit for average. He has the ability to have 4 to 5 above average tools. . For me, he is a sleeper on a national level, but the people in Oklahoma already know he can flat out play. Really hope we can sign him. This is an exciting pick. Going to be a tough sign but they should have some money to spend based upon some other moves the club made earlier in the draft.
  7. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) Wait, Trout was available when the Sox picked? I remember writing up an article about how much i liked Mike Trout. Probably somewhere on FutureSox. That said, hard to say if he'd be the same player had he gone through our system. You assume so but never know. People thought he was undersized and didn't have a high ceiling..now he's one of the best athletes and best players in the majors.
  8. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:23 PM) Exactly. They used to take a lot of the lower ceiling, more advanced players and that didn't turn out as well. They've definitely had more success with this strategy. It's not like it's as simple as fast guys never bust or guys with big swings never make it. There are so many factors even after a guy hits pro ball. It's difficult to always pinpoint what the failing is of a prospect that doesn't make it. Different things come into play. I refuse to right off Thompson, Hawkins, or Barnum. All of those guys have some serious upside. I will admit though, that I have very little faith in our organizations ability to develop position players. Almost no good position players have made it up and damn near all of the guys that did had some serious flaws (dating all the way back to Josh Fields, Brian Anderson, and Chris Young and continuing with Viciedo and Beckham (albeit he was ruined at the major league level). Hard for me to get super mad about Mitchell since he had the big injury but he still hasn't taken the steps forward you'd expect (last years hot start was great but damn did he collapse). Beats the hell out of the days where they were consistently drafting boring guys though.
  9. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 01:10 PM) I've seen a few people note this, but other than Danish, the five other picks follow the same type of picks the Sox have made for a few years now: athletic hitters and big, hard-throwing pitchers. I didn't expect the title changes of Hahn and KW to change that because it's the same people in every other major spot in the org. The strategy improved a lot the past two years or so anyway. I like what they've done and they have done a good job on the pitching front. The big thing is to see how those big arms ultimately develop at the big league level and to figure out if the Sox can at all figure out how the hell to develop some of these position players.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 12:31 PM) I don't agree with him when he says the Heat had better players. If you are going to match them up talent wise, the only guy you can say is clearly better overall is Birdman. Rodman would destroy Bosh defensively and Bosh would never grab a board. Pippen was faster and stronger than Wade and had a stronger jumper. I've also said my piece on Jordan. And really, Chalmers and Harper were 3rd or 4th options at best, so it doesn't really matter who is the best out of those two. The Bulls defensively would have been sick. Stick Jordan on Wade...Pippen on Lebron and you have Harper who could have played Wade no problem either on D.
  11. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 12:21 PM) http://espn.go.com/chicago/nba/story/_/id/...rage-played-90s I agree with about 90% of this. I'd only disagree that Lebron would be "average" in a more physical 90's league. Dude gets mauled going to the rim and still can finish. I don't think the physical play would have bothered him. I agree with everything except the fact that Lebron is average. LBJ would be special in any era. One of the best ever and he could have easily handled the physicality of the 80's/90's.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 12:52 PM) That has him listed as an OF and they called him a RHP above? I noticed the same thing. He had to be a pretty big reach at this point. Am assuming this is one of those the Sox see something others haven't yet. He was a pretty highly touted high school prospect (committed to LSU) and has a power arm. Limited experience as a full time pitcher (was known for his power bat more then his right arm prior to transferring to San Marcos). http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/Mar/11...marcos-pitcher/
  13. Well they went with Anderson...Tim Anderson. I'm not surprised. Bit of a reach but I like the fact they are going for a shortstop early.
  14. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 05:44 PM) Gonzalez not ranked that high in top 20 places I saw. I didn't say thats who I'd take...I think its who the Sox would take. I don't really want either of Stanek/Gonzalez. The guys I wanted are off the board. That said, I think they get solid value with either of the affermentioned guys. I'd take Chris Anderson.
  15. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 05:35 PM) I really don't like Stanek. I feel like we end up with him. 15. Shipley 16. JP Crawfod 17. Stanek Sox probably take Gonzalez over Stanek.
  16. Shipley/Stanek/Crawford is my order and I think the Sox take one of those 3.
  17. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 05:22 PM) I don't know much about prospects so what is so good about him? Catcher (premium position) with strong arm and a ton of power potential. Was a top 10 talent. Huge bust potential though (catching prospects have low success rates). Renfroe off the board.
  18. QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 05:20 PM) I'd take an athletic OF with tools every year if I thought he was a good prospect. You can't go wrong with a toolsy OF or a pitcher with velocity and good stuff. You can never have enough of those players. The trick is to get them to turn out. Agreed. I'd also take a lot of shortstops because they can always move to 2B or CF.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 05:19 PM) If McGuire fell to the Sox, I would be happy if they take him. If McGuire is there and there, I'd take him.
  20. I like Renfroe a lot. I know Sox have taken a lot of OF's lately but nice tools.
  21. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 04:47 PM) If he's the best college bat available this really is a weak draft class. Mayo seems to think there's a good chance he moves to RF. I think he plays at 3B. He has a total hose though and is a great athlete...moving to RF doesn't mean he stinks. And he is the best college bat available in a few years, imo. Guys like Bryant are rare breeds. I'm fine with a stud 3B or a stud RF. If the Cubs are patient, he could develop into an above average hitter at 3B with a lot of power and the abiltiy to hit for average. Those type of guys don't grow on trees. Damn...Boston got Ball.
  22. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) Who is his comp? His college coach sees Troy Glass. Who do you see? You have a lot of knowledge in this area and are well respected by many here. Glaus is a good comp. I think a little less power then Glaus, however, he possesses a better ability to hit for average then Troy did. Defensively has all the tools but still pretty raw at 3rd. I think he should be productive. Hard for me to say anyone had the raw power that Glaus had. Seems like a very very safe pick though, with consistent all star potential, I Thought that about Pedro Alvarez. Probably one of the best pure college hitters to come out since Pedro Alvarez and Tex.
  23. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 04:29 PM) I wasn't overly impressed by the video I saw of Bryant. I don't think he'll stick at third and a .329 avg at San Diego State isn't all that great. Who would have thunk it. He's one of the best offensive collegiate prospects to come out in years. Great athlete, great power. You show your lack of knowledge. San Diego State plays out west and plays a tough schedule too.
