  1. anyone interested in an NFL pick'em game in yahoo?
  2. Strayhorn is a Democrat. I don't care if she got elected as a Republican. You have to remember, though, that Democrats in Texas are more like Republicans in the northeast, they're fairly conservative. Perry's just an assmunch. I have always not liked him. Bell is a relative unknown, but seems to be a nice enough guy. Then there's Kinky. He's just... Kinky.
  3. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 01:36 PM) *pulls out six sigma booklet* That's what is wrong with you.
  4. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:33 PM) You can get faster. Speed camp. I am not joking either. It works. You are not going to go from a 5 flat to a 4.3 40, but you can get faster. You can be taught how to run faster and not to waste movement. There's a whole theory on developing 'fast twitch' muscle to build your speed. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:34 PM) I don't think the problem is that BA is inherently not fast. He has good speed. He's stolen 15 bases in a year before in the minor leagues, with decent percentages. He's not Carl Crawford, but he should be better than 2/6 in SB's with his speed. He does have the ability to learn to steal 20 bases or so at a high percentage every year, which is an invaluable thing to have. He can learn how to be faster in going from 1st base to 2nd base during a pitch. That is something you can learn. Exactly...
  5. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:32 PM) I think he knew that but he was just looking to bash. It's ok. That's why I didn't respond. Rare moment for me, I know. We're all looking to bash. We just need to win, damnit.
  6. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:31 PM) But Ozzie also mentioned that BA wasn't that fast. If there's some secret formula in Winter Ball that makes you a few steps faster, the Sox have about 12 guys on the roster who need to be on Anderson's plane. He isn't as 'smart' out there as he needs to be, either. I think a guy can use his tools effectively needs to be put in all the situations that he can to better himself. I think that's all Ozzie is saying. This got waaaaaaaaay off of that, but that's the bottom line.
  7. QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:08 PM) I think you're having difficulty following the discussion. Nowhere did I state OG is a bad manager for telling BA "to go to winter ball and get better." This is what I stated: "[Ozzie Guillen's] locked in to a belief that speed is a more important asset in a leadoff hitter than OBP. He greatly overvalues speed." Kapkomet and I continued discussion on that topic, and then you replied to my post with the quote at the top of this post. Seems like a reasonable response. I think SSI was replying while we were talking. It's ok.
  8. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 10:00 PM) No. He invoked the name of Joey Gathright. World Class speedster. Terrible baseball player. Ozzie's talking out his ass. He values speed WAY more than OBP, and it's not even close. Sweeney is starting in CF and leading of because, as guillen said himself, 'he reminds me of Ozzie Guillen." Well, there's no doubt you have to get on base to use your speed.
  9. QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:57 PM) I haven't heard or read Ozzie stating that. Yea, but if you read between the lines, he wants BA on base, and then to utilize that talent (speed) there as well.
  10. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:57 PM) Ok, who on this team is a better canidate? BMac?
  11. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:53 PM) Pablo Ozuna entered the season with a career .307 OBP Scott Podsednik entered with a career .345 OBP They've combined to post a .277 OBP in the second half. They've combined for just a .200 OBP in the first inning since the break. They've gotten every start this season in LF and, before tonight, every start of the year in the leadoff position. That's true... are you agreeing with what I'm saying? QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:54 PM) Then why does Ozzie keep starting Podsednik--who's known for his speed--at leadoff instead of Mackowiak--who has a higher OBP? If you go back to BA's case, he wants to see a higher OBP. And his speed on the basepaths needs to be utilized. Someone else mentioned 30-30 in this thread, and it's possible, if he works hard enough.
  12. Different teams respond to different tactics. This year's Sox is different then last year's. I don't understand why that's not being talked about either.
  13. QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:43 PM) He overvalues the talent of a leadoff hitter, believing speed is a more important factor than OBP. Do you really see that? I don't. I think he things that once you raise your OBP, your speed is invaluable.
  14. Look, this is a good thread - let's keep away from the sideshow. I just cleaned it up... let's all move on. Thanks.
  15. Secret prisons, public prisons, does it matter? They are all detained, who cares where it is? I doubt they care or even know where they are for that matter.
  16. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:25 PM) The players are that confident in you to let you know they are sick of his act? Yeah, ok! Here little fan, go spread this on the message boards..... We trust you completely. Ummmmmmmm... go listen to the podcast, and do a little research before bashing Steff this time. She's just repeating what Jason said in a post already, she's not the one saying anything. /carry on - this is a lively debate
  17. At least you supported your thoughts... could be right. We'll never know, though.
  18. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 06:18 PM) Its amazing how difficult it seems to be for people to accept that there is NO SINGLE REASON for the fact that we aren't dominating baseball. The reasons are many - some from management, some from staff. Plenty of blame to go around. I'm frustrated like everyone else, of course. I'm just not ready to give up, and I'm not going to delude myself into thinking there is one easy solution to making the team better. Indeed. This is why they play a 162 game schedule and not play on XBOX's like ya'll want to think like.
  19. Everyone's a critic, and loves to take everything out of context. That's all.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:06 PM) So now we are slowly seeing the injuries creep out of this team... It explains a lot. Just watching the team over the last few months I think a lot of guys have been playing through a lot of pain, and it is just now seeing the light of day with the media. ^^^^^ No, Ozzie just sucks and mishandles EVERYONE on the team.
  21. It's all a conspiracy so Ozzie gets fired. /rolly
  22. I wasn't in the game thread, and I'm sure you all did kudos in there... but what a ballsy outing by Vazquez. VERY impressive.
  23. I do agree with the assessment that Bmac hasn't been put in a situation to succeed. And, I also think he's going to have a rough year or two... but after that, he'll be pretty damn good. Read: Jon Garland.
  24. QUOTE(WCSox @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 03:39 PM) Just last week, people criticized Ozzie for not using B-Mac in big-game situations. I'm so sick of people making excuses for Golden Boy's mediocre pitching this season. He's had all freaking season to adjust to the sporadic work that a long-reliever gets. At some point he has to get the job done, despite the fact that he's been a starter thoughout his career and despite how many innings he has or hasn't thrown lately. I really think that B-Mac will eventually be a very good pitcher, but he has a long way to go. Thank you. To expand on WC's comments - I agree with everyone here that says BMac has not been utilized correctly this season. But, he has to be effective, no matter what the role. He has some learning to do, period, before he becomes the golden boy everyone expects him to be.
