He's not Cy-- Okay, I know you guys would probably want to strangle me if I said that joke again. But yeah... nice job, BMac. Pretty much what I asked for has happened. Five plus innings of pretty dominant pitching. The pressure is on you, now, Ozzie. B-Mac should be starting sometime next week. Six man rotation? More rest for everybody, except Garland, who needs to be pitching every fifth day, if not every other day.

Punto = pwned. Too bad none of our other pitchers actually attack him like that. The others nibble the outside corner.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 01:12 AM) 3.1, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB Cy Young would've thrown 3.1 IP with 0 R and 10 Ks. Brandon can't do that.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 01:01 AM) Do you really not like Mack, or just the use of him? No, I'm down with Mack, just not in CF. My anger is at Mack right now, but that's just because Oz puts him in a situation to fail. He's really in a lose lose situation...
-
Good thing Mackowiak started in CF, otherwise we wouldn't have all this offense.
-
That's a pretty good job by Hunter there, truth be told. Sigh... there goes my hope.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 12:54 AM) McCarthy should know better than to keep hitters off-balanced. STFU. He's not Cy Young.
-
God that's beautiful. He absolutely worked Cuddyer over there.
-
Good thing we have Mackowiak's offense in tonight, huh?

Rob Mackowiak: Offensive MVP of the team?
-
This game can still be semi-fullfilling. If Brandon pitches four or five scoreless innings, like I said earlier, then maybe the heat will start to rise on Ozzie. Maybe some reporters will see what we're seeing, that McCarthy can't and wouldn't be any worse than any of the five starters were sending out there save Jon Garland. Please, B-Mac, that's all we got tonight.

SHAMELESS PLUG: If you have a question for Kevin Goldstein from Baseball Prospectus, go over to SouthSideSox and post a question in this thread: http://www.southsidesox.com/story/2006/8/26/151356/715

Okay, guys, I've pulled it out. It's Rally Havlat! time.
-
The only positive that can come out of this game would be for McCarthy to throw four-five dominant innings, really forcing Ozzie and Coop's hand.

Rondell White looks silly on two two-seam fastballs from Contreras. So what do you throw to get him out? Slider. Heh. Great forkball, Jose.

QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 07:47 AM) Ryan Sweeney: .348 OBP, .448 SLG, .796 OPS And that is in an extreme hitter's park. If he can't even manage to be an above average hitter in AAA in a hitter's park, what makes you think he is ready to do anything but fail in the majors? Sure, call him up, but don't play him unless it is mop-up time. Podsednik is beyond awful. Mack, Gload and Ozuna are all better in LF. And each would be better than the not-ready-for-the-majors Ryan Sweeney. How is his batting line of .296/.351/.453 below average? Quoting The Cheat here for a second: I'm also looking at the improvement that Sweeney has shown as the season has progressed. His OPS has risen and gotten better month-to-month. The last two months, he's posted OPS' of .857 and .870. I don't know how much of an improvement over Podsednik RS would be. I'd make a move like this more because I'd want to try and provide a spark to this team. But you can't deny that he'd be a defensive upgrade over any of your options, and I don't think he'd hit worse than Pods. At this point, though, I just want Podsednik gone. I'd love to see Ozzie use a three-headed monster of Gload/Mack/Ozuna in LF, but I don't think he has the guts to do it.
-
Scott Podsednik watch: With the single, he'll keep his OBP at the magical .330 mark. Meanwhile, his batting average is below .260, and his slugging is at a stellar .365. Ryan Sweeney, OTOH, went 2-for-4 with a walk; both hits were for doubles. Better defensively? Check. Potential to bring a spark to the team, if only because it'll show that mediocrity and piss poor production will not be tolerated? Check. September 1st can't get here soon enough. I really hope Kenny and Ozzie make a real ballsy move like calling up BOTH Sweeney and Fields and platooning them. I know that would eff over Charlotte, but these two would represent a clear upgrade over Scotty Dergan.

Really lovin' the new stuff at MILB. For example, with Ryan Sweeney this year (small sample sizes, beware), while he has seven less homers on the road, he also has seven more doubles. And his OBP is ten points higher on the road, too. I mentioned this in a thread earlier, too, but his OPS has also improved month-to-month. This year, his OPS is down about twenty points from last month, but a.) there's still time and b.) last month was his season best, .857. He's at a respectable (for his age) .830 OPS in August, and just below .800 for the season. It'd be a nice accomplishment to finish the season with an .800 OPS (.300/.350/.450). And, while that isn't a particularly great line, especially for a team's (arguable) top prospect, I'm glad to see the performance start to back the scouts' projections.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 24, 2006 -> 02:22 AM) My comment about Loaiza was a joke towards the people who are using one game to evaluate Chris Young, and the trade itself. LOL. You gotta be joking with that comment, right? Yes, me, WHarris, and all of the other Chris Young fans are using one game to evaluate him. Forget the 48 HRs and 73 doubles he's put up at three different levels over the past two years; we're all judging him on the eight ABs he's had. :banghead

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 08:25 PM) You want to see the perfect, the prototypical 2-hole hitter, I submit Chris Getz at Birmingham. He still needs to grow, but he has all the ingredients to be perfect in this spot...amazing eye, rarely strikes out, good bat handler, great plate discipline, and good speed. Getz is one of my favorite minor league players and while he is probably 2 years away, he is the type of player you look for in the 2-hole (unless you can get Derek Jeter) . Yes, we can all look forward to Chris Getz -- the 23 year old in AA who is hitting .258 with an awesome .327 OBP and even better .325 SLG% -- to be our #2 hitter in two years. This is the Pittsburg Pirates that we're hoping he'll be starting for, right? This is probably the most ridiculous slurping of a minor league player on this board. Getz will be lucky to make it as a bench player, much less make it to the majors. When Getz 'gets' that OBP above .360, then we can talk about him being a potential MLB player. He's not going to hit for power, so that OBP better be in the .360s-.370s, and at this point in time, there's really no indication he can do that.

Feel free to discuss the absolute pwnage that Detroit has put on us these first two games. I'm pissed that time after time, Kenny Rogers shuts us down. You know, you CAN, in fact, go to the opposite field against him. The gameplan seemingly hasn't changed against this guy. It's a f***ing joke. Go nuts.

Well, we'll still be in the WC lead after tonight. Minny loses.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 01:21 AM) He can't steal bases!!! No way!!! We get the point. Maybe if you say it a third time, people will think it's funny though...

Pitch down and away. What to do with it? GIDP.
