Sox vs. Kansas City, 4/9/06, Buehrle vs. Elarton

QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 07:05 PM) Two answers to this. They want this team to gel and one sure way to impede good chemistry is by bumping people around the lineup. Dropping a guy out of the leadoff spot after 5-6 games would be perceived by the players as panic move IMO. They are gonna let this team gel and since Posednik is such an important part of things he will get every chance to work things out here at the big league level. Plus I don't think they can just send Podsednik down, they'd have to DL him for 15 days and then put him on a rehab assignment. The second part is Jerry Owens, he didn't have a good spring at all and I think they want to get him into a good groove. Fair enough. I'm just saying, if Hawk -- the homer of all homers -- is conceding that Podsednik probably isn't ready (ABs wise, and who knows, maybe even health wise), then that's probably a good indication that he isn't ready. Your answer on Owens is a good and reasonable one, too. Mid-June or so, though, he should probably be ready. -

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 06:53 PM) Mackowiack could lead off. Not for any extended period of time, no he can't. There's a reason he's a bench player. His career line is something like .270/.335/.400. -

QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 06:50 PM) Right, but guess what, it ain't in game 6 of the season. They'll give him every benefit of the doubt, a few weeks at least. Jim, here's my question to you. Hawk just said something on TV to the effect of: "It's tough for the Sox to expect Podsednik to be hitting on all cylindars, afterall, he didn't play for the whole spring training." Well, then, why isn't he at Charlotte right now getting in his "spring training"? You know what I'm saying? I can't see a guy like Jerry Owens doing a whole lot worse than Pods is right now, and if Pods isn't at 100% health, he's a pretty ineffective ballplayer, IMO. -

QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 06:49 PM) and put who there?? Iguchi. He's taking pitches, and overall looking pretty good at the plate. I felt before the season, if we were going to need to make a trade for one position player, it would be our left-fielder. I know I didn't post this anywhere, so it sounds like me second-guessing, but -- it's the truth. -

QUOTE(ShoeLessRob @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 06:47 PM) Pauly just ain't getting it done and he know's it, felt sorry for him right there when he dropped his bat. Tough for me to feel sorry for a guy making $12 million... -
Pedro Lopez just broke the tie in the tenth with a bases loaded force-out. 1-0 Knights. I wonder why the Knights manager took Tracey out mid-inning. He was wild, walking two, but then he settled down and retired three in a row (only to hit the next batter).

See, Cerb, I thought it was on the outside half of the plate, but I didn't think it was off the plate. I'll have to see the replay again...

Can someone help me? For whatever reason, I can't watch the Charlotte/Toledo game on MiLB.com. Err actually -- I can't find the link for the video feed. Where, exactly, is it at? I tried clicking on the headline, and that didn't work. BTW -- Haeger pitched well. 7+ scoreless innings, with six K's. Gave up just one hit, with two BBs. Tracey is pitching with the bases loaded right now in a tie game.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 11:56 PM) I'm just relaying the information about the statistic I've heard from a very smart baseball man. It very well could be BAPIP, I'm not sure. Good contact or not, Politte looked bad in the last 1/4 of our season last year, and his fastball looks even slower now. I'm all for McCarthy being our set-up man. Well, it'd be nice (for me) to know what exactly you're talking about... I doubt Politte repeats last year. He was really, really good. Cotts, OTOH, I think he's got a nice future ahead of him, and I can see him coming close to repeating last year. Agreed on McCarthy, but you know that's going to take time. They're going to have to ease him into that role; this is, as you know, his first year relieving. When Ozzie does use him, however, it's gotta be in high leverage situations, and he needs to use him for two innings at a time. I wouldn't mind if McCarthy was only used once every four days, so long as in that game, he gets two-three innings. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 11:50 PM) According to statistics based on balls put in play against a pitcher, Politte was the luckiest pitcher. ??? Are you talking about BAPIP or what? And, even so, I'm still not buying it. A low BAPIP would probably be due to guys not making good contact off of Politte. -
QUOTE(rventura23 @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 11:25 PM) he is nasty against us walk him Walk him and put the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first? To face Sanders? :banghead Politte executes (ie doesn't hang a changeup/slider), and we're talking about a 3-2 win.

QUOTE(fathom @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 09:42 PM) Here's the last time I'll write this: statistically, he was the luckiest pitcher in baseball last season. That probably isn't true at all. Politte gave up the least percentage of line drives (of the 2005 bullpen) last season by a large margin. Guys weren't hitting Politte well at all last year. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Apr 8, 2006 -> 05:06 AM) I'm expecting a big year out of Broadway this year. He was tired last season for us. I still have some doubts about him but he has a real good feel and a damn good spike curve. Would I be correct in saying that Broadway's ceiling probably isn't that high? I mean, even if he has a great year, it just doesn't seem like he's the type of guy who's got the potential to be a top of the rotation starter. Of course, that's certainly not a bad thing -- if Broadway develops into a #3-4 type who will give you innings along with an ERA around 4.25 every year, I think that'd be a good payoff for a mid-first round pick.

QUOTE(JimH @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 09:51 PM) Keith, He wanted to save Cotts in case he needed him in the 9th or a tie game. Logan is the lefty specialist, that's why he used him against Hafner in the 8th. You are correct that both pitched two innings. Guillen used Logan in the role they have him in, he made a bad pitch. As for Thornton, I'm sure he'll get some innings this weekend. Jim, the thing is, I'm not buying that Cotts explanation -- even if it is Ozzie's logic behind it. I don't want to come off as second-guessing, because I was saying it to my TV at the time it occured. If, in fact, Ozzie uses Cotts, and the same thing happens, he'd still have Jenks + Logan + Thorton for extra innings. Don't get me wrong -- I fully understand what you're thinking when you say that Ozzie isn't just managing for now, but for September and October. I realize that. But it's the 8th inning of a game, and Hafner and Martinez, two of the best hitters in the division, are coming up -- you need your best, regardless of whether or not Cotts/McCarthy are the "LOOGY". Again -- I see where you're coming from, but I don't agree with it.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2006 -> 02:58 PM) Riiiiiiiiiiiight. No one would have gotten on here and mentioned that Neal pitched two innings the prior day and that Logan got Hafner to GIDP on opening day and ripped Ozzie for using Cotts despite those facts. That is laughable. Uhh, Boone Logan pitched two innings the prior day as well, and actually threw more pitches than Cotts...

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Apr 6, 2006 -> 05:51 AM) Craig Hansen would be up with the big league club as the closer if he had more than 20 innings of pro baseball under his belt. Papelbon and Lester will be worked into the rotation next season, while Hansen and Delcarmen are added to the back of the bullpen. One thing Epstein has done (ohh wait, he's not the GM :rolly -- yeah right) is he has created a lot of depth, which I'm sure you know. It seems at every position (except catcher), they have a guy (or, in some cases two) who can fill-in for a month or so if someone went down. I'm still not 100% sold on the pitching, but Boston 2006 is probably better than Boston 2005.
