QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 12:44 AM) Timo could be the permanent LF and Hawk would say "where would he play?" --- We would need a physical hole, I'm talking a real-life sink hole, at one of the positions for Hawk to criticise one of our own. He doesn't see the giant hole in Timo's bat?

QUOTE(Mr. Chairman @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 11:48 PM) Ok, Aaron went from having some of the worst instincts from a CF in the game (2002) to being a Gold Glover? Seriously? Reality being what it is, Aaron brings the following to the table: good jumps, average closing speed, average at best hands, above average arm strenght but mediocre accuracy. He has improved and now is a good def. outfielder. But not a Gold Glover - there is nothing he is great at. Watch Hunter, Andruw, younger Edmonds play and you'll see what I am talking about. Griffey? Could still be a decent corner OF, but, man, is it going to be scary watching him dive/bang, knowing that some 40 Million are on the line. Younger Edmonds, yes. But not now. He gets awful jumps and reads on the ball. BTW, I'd say Aaron Rowand gets great jumps. There's only one guy who I've seen do it better this year (get great jumps), and that's Mark Kotsay. Andruw Jones? Dude, what the hell is that? You can make an arguement that Jones is the best defensive centerfielder ever, and I certainly don't think it's fair to compare ANYONE to Jones.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:05 PM) Dang, something must be wrong with the Guchi man as well. Looks like the same lineup from Sunday? I think Ozzie just wants to give those guys their full game.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 10:36 PM) Honel I'd trade Hernandez, though, too. He hasn't proven anything above the rookie leagues. Heck, I think he didn't even do very well in Kanny when they tried him up there. Not to say he won't be good, but it'll be at least another two-three years before he even cracks a big league roster. I don't know why they'd want Honel. They could have had him for nothing earlier in the season when he was taken off the 40-man. Don't see how he can be any part of a package for Griffey...

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 09:56 PM) Stupid. Now he's going to have to drive to Olivet-Nazarene for 2 days of practice. He won't be starting this year and basically put the Bears a year back with this. He'll get his carries. Not as much as Thomas Jones, but he'll get enough carries. IMO, at least ten touches a game -- not neccessarily rushing, but recieving, too. Plus, the Bears now have two -- I say three -- competent running backs in Jones, Benson, and Adrian Peterson. It'd be nice to get Jones 20-25 touches a game, Benson 15-20, and Peterson 5-10.

Grossman's Season Basically Over

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 04:43 AM) You breathe on Grossman wrong and he gets hurt............time to move on. Nuke... haven't seen ya in the Blackhawk thread lately. Hmm... Wonder why? -
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 03:01 AM) What really annoys me is that we have, according to most scouting experts, one of the most MLB ready minor league outfielders in Brian Anderson. The leadoff spot in the order is incredibly overrated, especially in the AL. Just cause we can put someone with speed at the position, it doesn't mean s***. A guy with no speed who can get on base at a high clip is more valuable than someone with good speed who can't even obtain a .300 OBP. In 100 sporadic ABs, he couldn't put up a .300 OBP. In about (off the top of my head) 400 ABs last year -- consistent ABs -- he put up a .340ish OBP. He knows how to take some pitches, too. Anyone know where to find a pitches per PA stat? That said, hopefully they won't need to resort to Harris or Anderson, and hopefully Griffey will be in town by then.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 02:03 AM) My favorite collection of toys is the professional wrestler figurines my brother has. The sad thing is that about half of them are dead now. I loved wrestiling figures. I had the ring and everything, even some belts. And not those big ones either. The ones that were made of hard plastic and about four-five inches tall were the best.

QUOTE(WSFAN35 @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 06:53 AM) All I said was that the comparison isn't that far off, not that Young is going to end up like Borchard. The matter of fact is that no one knows where he is going to end up, so for someone to say that Young ABSOLUTELY WON'T end up like Borchard is ridiculous. People talk about this guy like he's a for sure thing, but he's not. Who said that? I just said the Borchard/Young comparison was awful...

Tom, I assume Haeger just throws a knuckler and a fastball? Or does he mix in a curveball, a la Tim Wakefield? And, how hard does his fastball normally clock in at? EDIT: Thanks, Rex.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 04:18 AM) If Pods goes on the DL, that's when KW has to shine. There's not a doubt in my mind that KW knows Timo shouldn't be an everyday player. If we don't feel like there's a player we can call up in the minors to help our team, then he needs to go acquire a hitter. I'm hesitant to jump on the Owens bandwagon, which is ironic, because I picked him as my 'sleeper' early this season. His OBP is way too AVG heavy for me to get excited about him being a leadoff hitter, and his IsO Power is like .060, which isn't very good either. Still a nice pickup by Williams, but I'm with DBaho -- future fourth outfielder.

QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 8, 2005 -> 02:14 AM) Damn, out of the 11 regular season games, Michigan only has 4 road games. At Wisconsin, At Iowa, at MSU, all will be tough, than at Northwestern. Hey now -- Northwestern tends to play good teams really well at home. I'm not saying that it's going to end on a last second TD pass, but I don't think it will be a cakewalk for Michigan, either... -
QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:43 AM) again you call me stupid, again you defend players who either have not made it or are fringe players. I really don't understand. If Gload is so great he would be here or starting for another team. He is a back up and will remain that way. So far again I am right and its been the truth. Baj won't make it, they called up jenks and Adkins despite the great BAJ numbers. He barely pitched in spring training therfore I can only conclude he doesn't have the game for the majors. I know you love the minor league players, but they are just not that good. I didn't call you stupid. I disagree with you the majority of the time, but I've never called you stupid. Sorry if you took my 'day job' comment that way... Adkins got killed tonight, and the idea to call him up was still a bad one, IMO. He has nothing, and simply isn't all that good. Munoz/Diaz/Baj would all have been better choices. Why hasn't either been traded for? Well, not many times a 27-28 year old will be the main part of a package. I wouldn't have been surprised, however, if the Sox did make a trade, to see Baj as a fill in, sort of like Majewski last year. And that's not a bad thing -- Majewski is having (last time I checked) a darn good season for the Nats. I love certain minor league players. It's tough to make a blanket statement like that. And I reiterate (sp?), that I don't think Bajenaru is a bullpen stud, nor do I think Gload is a starter. I do think Gload can start, but I don't think he's a starter -- if you understand me. What I'm saying, is basically -- if a team has enough fire power at other positions -- say a team like Boston -- then yes, at league minimum, I think Ross Gload is a good option, because he can give you real good defense at first, and league average production. On a team like the White Sox? Not so much. We need power from that spot, he wouldn't be a good fit there. But you can't disagree with me in saying that he should be on the team. He'd EASILY be the best bat off the bench, something that we'll need in the playoffs. In fact, Gload and maybe even Brian Anderson should make our playoff roster -- IMO.

QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:32 AM) actually I would like to know why he hasn't been given the chance, is it that the sox don't think he is good. i suspect that is the case. Why is he never mentioned in trade rumors? is it because the scouting reports tell every team he cannot transition his game to the big show. I think that could be it. Getting excited about prospects is a dead end game because most don't make it. That's some real s***ty scouting report, because it's awfully stupid to judge a guy off of eight IP. I'm not saying Bajenaru is the second coming of Gagne, but I think he can be a decent bullpen arm. Which is why he put up a 115 OPS+ (or so) last year?

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:29 AM) He may be, and I hope you are right. I just think quickman is right. Hope this guy is a #4-5 guy, and if he is more than that its a bonus. We have been burned the last 12 years or so waiting for these guys to be anything more than that. Maybe the White Sox should just stick to drafting OF'ers, 'cause it seems like that's the only thing they do well. Carlos Lee and Maggs Ordonez (both minor league FA findings), Aaron Rowand, Jeremy Reed (whose having a decent -- not great -- rookie season), and hopefully Sweeney, Anderson, and Young. Then, after you've completed the draft of 50 OFers, trade the ones that succeed for pitching.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:25 AM) Too bad the k/bb ratio didn't mean s*** when McCarthy was getting shelled with the Sox. Well -- I don't know what that's supposed to mean, but again -- about five starts. And, we saw the worst of McCarthy, when he really wasn't pitching all that well at Charlotte, either. I'm not saying McCarthy is ready right now. I think it would be good for him to finish the season at Charlotte, see if he can improve the amount of homers he's giving up, and maybe even learn a cutter. But, he didn't throw his changeup AT ALL when he was with the Sox. He threw it like twice. And the minor league experts here said that was one of the main reasons he's been successful, 'cause he threw the changeup. For whatever reason, he had no faith at all in that pitch.

QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:22 AM) Baj will never make it, and so far I have been proven right. i cannot recall my opinion on bradford, but I did like the trade. Not sure your point. My point is, our minor league system is not great and I do not think highly of our prospects As for the prospects i do like and have said so from the beginning are: You've been proven right because he hasn't had much of an opportunity to prove himself. He's clearly better than his competition at AAA -- even you can admit that, no? My point with Bradford was that he pitched well in the minors, and they didn't really think all that much of him, either.

QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:18 AM) I think you are taking exception to my comment about Mcarthy being a 4or 5 or my comments about the system in general? Please let me know. If its Mcarthy, you are free to believe what you want, as am I. You indicated my stupidity about that, and thats fine with me. I do not need your blessing. I don't beleive he will be a stud pitcher but he is the best pitchign pospect this organization has. As for diaz, I don't think he will ever make it at least consistantly. He is done in my book, but your book is open. What about Borchard, what do you think about him? Meh. I'm rooting for Borchard, but the numbers (stats) are against him.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:16 AM) Rauch didn't walk that many. 16 in 57innings at Bristol in 1999. 33 in 110 innings at Winston Salem in 2000 and 16 in 56 innings at Birminham in 2000. McCarthy is striking guys out in the minors that he didn't in the majors on pitches just off the plate. Then he grooves one and its gone. He has been much better recently at Charlotte, and whatever he is doing now, hopefully he can do on the major league level his next opportunity. Rauch, in his minor league career, averaged 2.77 BB/9, and 8.55 K/9. McCarthy, going into this season, averaged 1.54 BB/9, and 10.40 K/9. I assume that the BB number went up a little bit, and the K/9 is about the same. Still, he's about two K's better than Rauch, and about one walk better than Rauch. I'm also extremely happy with his recent success. He'll have his ERA below four if he has another start like this one. And I'm also extremely pissed that Joe Blanton is pitching well with Oakland, while Royce Ring is, well... Robby Alomar?
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:08 AM) That's because he got hurt when he went to AAA. He pitched 28 innings and had 27k in 2001 at Charlotte injured. His totals at A and AA were impressive, and there is no guarantee McCarthy doesn't get hurt. McCarthy is a good prospect, but at this point that is all he is. It's not just the K's. McCarthy has also had much better control than Rauch's minor league career, too. Agreed, he can get injured at any time. I'd hope not, however -- he doesn't throw in the high-90s, he doesn't (or not that I've heard of) throw a slider, and his deliverly looks good, too. The thing McCarthy has to fix is his HR/9. But I can deal with that, so long as it's the Brad Radke 'only solo shots 'cause you got such damn good control'. He'll probably learn a new pitch in Spring Training.
-
QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:02 AM) why is that, has he proven anything different? lets wait and see until you call me dumb. He has proven nothing to me except possible trade bait. Yeah -- you saw him for Spring Training, and you saw him for the five-six starts he made up here, and you're making a judgement off of him. I'll go with the larger sample size. Just like you did, BTW, with Bajenaru. I'm sure you're feelings on Chad Bradford was that he was a career minor leaguer too, huh?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:01 AM) Yep, he's facing minor league hitters. ... ok?
-
QUOTE(quickman @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 02:00 AM) I am sorry did any of the guys you mentioned make it? How many of them will make it? how many will play for this team? Last year did you think Diaz was going to be a major league pitcher for somebody and have a career in the majors? You see I didn't. Felix Diaz got tossed around by this organization. He pitched on three days rest one day, and ten days rest the next. Then they'd stick him in the bullpen, and have him start again. And he's no where near the pitcher McCarthy has, nor has he had any of the success in the minor leagues that McCarthy has had. Diaz will probably be a swingman type for his career, if he can regain the control that he had last year.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:58 AM) What were Jon Rauch's numbers back in 2000, when he was considered the top prospect in baseball. The Sox and Expos/Nationals would have loved for him to be a #4 or #5 starter. Rauch got injured, and never struck out over nine per nine IP at a level above AA. He also never had the control that McCarthy had. BTW, Fathom, McCarthy must be doing something right to have struck out almost 120 in about 105 IP...
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 01:55 AM) Why's that? It's too early to tell about McCarthy, but he doesn't jump out at me as a sure-fire MLB starter for years to come. Why not?
