  1. QUOTE(Jeremy @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 06:37 AM) Hahaha. I don't know who looks worse: Kenny if he made wild promises to Dye or Dye believing him. I think Kenny has done a pretty solid job this offseason. Anyone who thought he could take a thin minor league system and $10 or $20 million and improve the team by 15 or 20 wins was kidding themselves. I agree that he hasn't done terribly this winter, but too much damage has been done (or not been done) with the farm system and it's all taking a huge toll right now. Also, if you agree that the team couldn't be improved enough to compete in 2008, I can't see how you can view the Garland trade in a positive light. Kenny squandered away our biggest trading chip for another old player who doesn't figure to be part of the next time the White Sox raise any flags. He even said that he had offers with prospects on the table and that he turned them down. In a vacuum one year of Cabrera is a fine haul for one year of Garland, but you can't look at it so narrowly. The Sox would've been so much better served this winter getting younger, but that decision was made back in July when Dye and to a lesser extent Buehrle were kept.
  2. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:56 PM) Sorry, I backed up my useless reasoning...you made a blanket statement. Fixed. Glad to see 90 games of at-bats is worth making an inference from, however. I'll keep that in mind.
  3. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:27 PM) Really? According to Baseball Reference (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS): Batting 1st: .245/.283/.394/.677 in 92 games Batting 2nd: .290/.341/.402/.743 in 421 games Enjoy the crow. Ahh yes, because statistical inferences can be made from 92 games. I'll also await your release of your theory that where a hitter bats in the order carries any predictive value or, further, that having a "leadoff hitter" makes a damn difference at all. Till then, keep believing useless s***.
  4. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 07:09 PM) Not a good place for him...he's a better #2. That makes no sense, and it's scary that people actually believe something so silly.
  5. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:47 PM) And... --they're both major league baseball outfielders --both highly touted talents with minimal real experience --both highly sought-after this year and traded this year This really didn't have a whole helluva lot to do with the original post. "Much more serious" doesn't do Dukes justice. Seriously... A rap album and consentual sex (as an 18 year old, no less -- cripes) is in no way comparable to what Dukes has done. Thus, the parallel sucks because it was pointing at their 'off-the-field' issues. And I'm just going off of what the people who follow the team as much as I follow the Sox have said, and that's basically that these 'issues' are waaay waaay overblown. If Milledge and Dukes are a viable comparison, so are Brian Anderson and Dukes, Brandon McCarthy and Dukes, and basically any young player who has been called out by management for not going about his work in a "veteran-y" way.
  6. Also, before I get jumped on here... I'm making no accusations of racism. But there tends to be an association here that I'm not particularly fond of. Sort of how you usually see scouts compare black players to black players, white players to white players...
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:02 PM) I demand a reality show starring Duke and Milledge next season! That's quite ridiculous and you damn well know it. There's no reason to lump in Milledge with Dukes, other than... well, skin color, really.
  8. QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:04 AM) Crede for Burke doesn't seem good but Thornton or MacDougal does? I'm more or less guessing what may happen. 'Veteran' relievers are attractive to Wade and the Sox don't seem particularly high on MacDougal. Getting Burke would make some of our bench guys redundant. We'd have a big combination of weak hitting players including Owens, Bourg, Ozuna and (if it went through) Burke. I'm not including Uribe because it's tough to see the Sox keeping him around for $4.5 million, although I think the Sox want something semi-useful in return for Uribe, so they may hang onto him and hope (?) a contender's SS goes down so the Sox can swoop in with Uribe. How about a power hitter like Josh Phelps? If getting Burke meant no Jerry Owens I'd be a fan, as Burke can (and has) played both CF and LF.
  9. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:49 AM) Ugh, please tell me it's not Crede for Burke. Burke was just pathetic last season. I know the Sox have talked to the Astros about Sweeney in the past. Sweeney for Burke would be a bad trade....but it's possible. I would guess it's just Burke for mostly fodder. Maybe Burke for Thorton or MacDougal? Crede for Burke doesn't seem too good. Burke is fine as a bench player, but I wouldn't want the Sox giving up a whole helluva lot for him.
  10. QUOTE(ptatc @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:41 AM) I didn't ask that, I just wanted to know how the surgery went and how it was doing. When was the surgery? That type of surgery isn't anymore than 4-6 months on the very conservative end. From what I've heard he is progressing very well. According to an article posted at SouthSideSox, he had surgery in October. I'll double-check immediately after posting this. Yep, October: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...sp&c_id=cws
  11. QUOTE(SnB @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 04:40 AM) holy christ, he caught it. well that was entertaining Your services against Brian this week were GREATLY appreciated, SnB. Looks like McGahee is going to give you a 'W' this week, and Brady's last touchdown ensured my victory. //fantasy football talk that probably should be left to anther thread. my apologies.
  12. Does it make me a 'non-real-football-fan' for rooting for the Patriots on that drive only because I needed a Brady TD to give me the win in fantasy football this week?
  13. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:51 AM) God, I can't put into words how stupid it would be for this team to give up Cunningham, while in a position of needing more OF's, for Richar, and then give up on Richar after 2 months of surprisingly rapid growth, in order to pick up Loretta or Iguchi because they've decided those 2 guys are their only leadoff options. I agree. Signing or trading for a "proven veteran" would make the Cunningham trade absolutely pointless, and as much as I bash Kenny Williams, I doubt he'd show such little foresight and make a move that puts Richar back at Charlotte. Personally, I think a Uribe or Bourg + Richar platoon will be as productive as any free agent secondbaseman out there.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:34 AM) My prediction is we sign Rowand in the next week, and Owens will leadoff and play LF vs rhp, and Cabrera will leadoff vs lhp. It's too bad we didn't make a run at Josh Hamilton, as the Reds might be talking to the Cubs about him. There's absolutely no way anyone could possibly believe that Quentin was acquired to be a platoon player. Not a chance in hell. If Quentin comes out and plays like crap for the first two months maybe, but so long as that shoulder is healthy, Quentin is the Sox' starting LFer or RFer come April 1st.
  15. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 12:52 AM) I really, really, really doubt that KW went and got Quentin to platoon with anyone. He's starting in LF, unless he's flipped in another trade. Yeah, Quentin was acquired to be a full-time player. He's not platooning with anyone, much less Jerry Owens. Owens -- if he is indeed our fourth outfielder -- may spell him against some tough righties, but it won't be anything more than that (so long as Quentin is producing).
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:16 PM) When he went down to the Minors though, he still put up a 1.004 OPS. He tore things up after being sent down. I don't necessarily agree with the D'Backs fan, as the shoulder injury ended up requiring surgery, so I'm sure that took somewhat of a 'mental' toll and thus altered his approach a bit. They're saying his plate discipline was absolutely brutal last year but his minor league (career) numbers don't show that he was (a) a free swinger (187 Ks in 1300+ at-bats) or ( B ) poor in the 'plate-discipline' area (K/BB ratio was almost 1-to-1 -- 187 to 169. At the very least, we've finally gotten rid of using LF as a spot for a weak hitting outfielder. I hope that doesn't transfer over to CF, now. As far as a leadoff man, most everyone is making too big a deal about it. Go and get a player for CF -- if that's Andruw Jones, so be it. Hitting Cabrera leadoff isn't going to make a huge difference as he's already been slated as the #2 hitter -- what's moving him up one spot in the order going to hurt? The issue would be against righties, as a against lefties you can comfortably slot Fields or even Quentin second. I'd still prefer Fukodome, though.
  17. Here's a quote from a D'Backs fan about Quentin's struggles last season at the plate. Shield your eyes, SSI71:
  18. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 07:01 PM) Is it worth noting that his BABIP was insanely high during a large portion of his second callup? And despite the fact that he was hitting .340 for September he still couldn't hit a double to save his life and STILL couldn't crack a .400 OBP? Do we really need to throw the same numbers around for the 100th time? I don't think Owens is a very good baseball player, certainly not the starting CF and top PA earner on a championship team. You feel differently, somehow I doubt our opinions will change much before the start of the '08 season. No, you're looking at it all wrong. You're supposed to look at the month in which Owens needed a .407 BAPIP to post a superb, fantastic and utterly out-of-this-world .767 OPS and project that to a good leadoff man. Speed never slumps, silly -- OBP and power do, however.
  19. I wouldn't take a whole lot from Quentin's poor 2007 -- he was injured throughout the year and, as Dick Allen mentioned, he ended up getting surgery. I'm a fan of the deal, if only because it's an interesting trade. I like these young-player-for-young-player swaps, even though the risk may be a little bigger.
  20. Anyone see or hear anything about a Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter deal?
  21. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 06:41 AM) So I've narrowed it down to: Illinois Wsiconsin Loyola Marquette If you choose Wisconsin, doesn't that mean you have to trade alliances from U of I to Bucky?
  22. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 06:00 AM) I can't wait for the Mitchell Report to come out, and many of the superstars in baseball to be named. //A diverting rant That's going to be such a joke. Baseball is going to be crucified. Meanwhile, is anything ever mentioned about Shawne Merriman being suspended for steroids? Nope -- hell, he's featured in that neat little commercial Nike (?) has out. It pisses me off the way the media perceives steroids/PEDs in baseball versus steroids/PEDs in football.
  23. QUOTE(Jimbo's Drinker @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 02:54 AM) Great day for the Big 12....Ku and Texas win today. Chalmers' three was amazing. Basketball doesn't give me -- personally speaking -- many 'WOW' moments, but that was one. He must've been a good five-to-seven feet beyond the ark when he buried that one. He knew it all the way, too -- nothin' but net.
  24. Several irish carbombs made me a rather happy young male this weekend.
  25. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 12:15 AM) And Devin Hester Cause he dropped a pass? The Bears has multiple chances to ice it after the Hester dropped, and they sat on it and played prevent defense. This whole coaching staff is terrible.
