QUOTE(thedoctor @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 06:31 PM) i've also heard marquette is where shumpert's going to go. would be a really nice get for them. Quit jinxing it, fellas. The MU fan base is on pins-and-needles until Thursday, as Shumpert would be Crean's best recruiting 'get' in his time at Marquette. -
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 05:39 AM) If the Rockies get the pitching they've been getting, I don't see either AL team having a chance. Ehh -- the difference between either AL lineup and the D'Backs is so enormous it isn't even funny. You could obviously do this for every player in the order, but things are just a tad bit different when you're pitching to number three hitter Eric Byrnes vs number three hitter Travis Hafner or David Ortiz. And I know this isn't the ALCS thread, but the ALCS so far has been everything I could've asked for. I'll be shocked if the series doesn't make its way back to Boston. Those are two great baseball teams going at it.

On gameday, it shows Upton's triple as hitting in the white, right on the border of the fence. Since I have no TV near-by, did Upton hit it off the top of the wall?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 04:57 AM) Haha, no offense was taken. Did you at least get some good alimony from Dunn or does he not know you are cheating on him with hockey players of all people??? We're taking some time off until he's a free agent next winter. Then -- when he signs with the Sox to replace Thome -- I've promised him I'm going to buy two of his jerseys, one for me and a nice road-grey for you.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 04:48 AM) What you're saying is -- you think Owens or Phillips have to go with Crede for Howie? Per usual, Phillips is always a dealbreaker. I believe Crede for Kendrick was on the table at one point but when Stoneman asked for Phillips, Kenny balked (and rightfully so). And Jason, you don't have to defend yourself. My comment wasn't meant as a jab at you, just that you saying Kendrick will win a batting title wasn't really an outlandish, 'fanboy' comment. As you said, you're certainly not the only one to make a statement like that, and, without thinking about it a whole lot, I can't think of another young second baseman who I'd rather have than Kendrick. So long as he stays healthy he has a chance to have a superb career. And I'm no longer Mrs. Dunn -- you can address me as Mrs. Toews or Mrs. Kane.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 03:08 AM) That's quite the prediction. Jason may be a little 'fanboy-ish' with regards to certain Angels, but I don't think it's that bold of a prediction. Kendrick held a .359 minor league batting average. Hell, as an (partly-injured?) 23 year old this year, Kendrick hit .322. I find it laughable that someone even brought up his name as a possible trade target and even MORE laughable that somebody insinuated the Sox shouldn't trade for him (if offered) because we have Danny freaking (!) Richar manning the position. If the Sox are going to make a trade with LAA, how about for their OFer who was hurt most of the year and looks like he might not have a spot there anymore, Juan Rivera. I think that might make some sense for both teams (provided both players are healthy, of course).

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 09:18 PM) George Michael just found a suit. "There are dozens of us. DOZENS!"

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 08:16 PM) $600,000 seems like a lot until you realize the combination Andy Gonzalez and Nick Masset made a lot more than that this year. It is a step in the right direction, although Borchard's bonus was the biggest in MLB history for a while IIRC. That didn't work out too well. I wonder how much of an effect it had on future picks and bonuses. If that's the reasoning behind the lack of signings in Latin America -- because giving a Joe Borchard a big bonus worked out great, right? -- this organization is in a lot more trouble than any of us could even begin to fathom. I don't want to sound bitter, but instead of wasting $4 (?) million on Scott Podsednik and Darin Erstad, why not try to sign three or four of these guys? Instead of giving Mike Myers a lick of money, why not invest it in some overseas scouting? This signing is certainly a good thing, don't get me wrong, but the White Sox are way too late to the party.

Shumpert is going to decide this week, as Fathom already mentioned. I saw it mentioned in the Journal Sentinel. I hope the Dwyane Wade appearance and "Iman" signs at Marquette Madness were enough of a pitch to convince him that MU is the place. -
I was watching the game on Saturday night and, at one point during extra innings, I got a terrible feeling in my stomach. Just look at these two teams and compare them to the White Sox' roster -- we're so much less talented than both these teams, it isn't even funny. And yes, I understand I could have made this same statement three months ago, but still -- it's scary to think of how far the Sox have to go to reach the levels of where they were at in 2005 and (to a lesser extent) 2006.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 06:54 AM) Obviously totally agree here. At least he's finding the press box, for now. How did Sopel and Zuz look Saturday? Sopel is slow but hasn't done anything terribly stupid yet, and he seems to have some good instincts on offense. Zuz I don't have a good handle on yet so I'll hold off commenting, although he didn't look out of place when he was on the PP. And now I'm going to bed.

If they're leaning towards Havlat opting for no surgery, I'd still take it very slow with him. I think this team as it currenty stands (read: without Havlat) can float above water. Give him several weeks, into or past December if need be, to do everything he can to strengthen that shoulder. He doesn't need to be 'the guy' like he was last year, and you need not look any further than last game -- the whole third period, Kane was double-shifting to cover for Bourque. It's really amazing to say this, but these kids are 'that good' already -- it's quite stunning. He just needs to be a threat. He needs to be decent enough with Lang so we can have two lines that teams have to worry about. We don't need PPG Marty Havlat. Talking about the defense for a second, there have been some ugly turnovers, but at the end of the day -- just nine goals in five games. A lot of that's been Khabi, but I've been thoroughly impressed with Johansson. He's very calm and collected when he has the puck and generally makes good decisions. Wisniewski has played the best out of any of the d-men -- I hope he's here for a long time, I really like his game. The one guy who I don't like back there is Vandermeer who's almost-Cullimore-slow and isn't very good with the puck. I'd look to move him for a draft pick.

Marquette got a commit from a 2009 recruit last night, Erik Williams? Anybody know anything about him? -
What a f***ing game! Toews' shot was going FIVE FEET WIDE and it tipped off of Sharp AND Lang to go in. On the OT goal, Toews was working his ass off in front of the net for that tip in. What a f***ing game, I'm so happy. They played their asses off for the last 25 minutes of that game and that outcome was completely deserved. Woohoo!

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Oct 13, 2007 -> 05:50 PM) How in the world do you put Tennessee above Memphis? Honestly. Especially with Duke Crews probably out for a long time, if not off the team completely. And I can't vouch for Marquette being the 8th (or was it 9th?) best team in the nation. They're in that 10-15 range. -
C'mon fellas -- finish.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Oct 12, 2007 -> 09:47 PM) Expectations are low for us as Mac and Dar develop so hopefully we can surprise some people. Yes -- Wainright (sp?) is pulling some top-notch recruiting classes, isn't he? That worries me -- seemingly everybody in the BE recruits better than Crean (unless he lands Shumpert -- then I may change my mind a bit). From a basketball perspective it's a shame that Chandler left -- he's the exact type of player who Marquette has no answer for, unless Mbakwe turns out to be that good on the defensive end. Yeah, I'll be there. And yes, Milwaukee is 'teh suck' -- there are some good concert venues but other than that... I gots to turn 21 before I can have the slightest bit of fun. Ditto. Does DePaul get ND twice? I know we do. I would've liked both DePaul and ND twice -- instead they gave us a home-and-home with Seton Hall. Bleh. -
I hate to base it on these terms, but is there any idea about how much $$$ the kid got?

I think I just saw Tom Crean and Jerel McNeal showing Shumpert around the campus. That's neat. Not to sound like a righteous, pompous dickhead, Marquette's put in the most work for the most amount of time of any of the remaining teams remaining, so they deserve Shumpert. I understand this happens all the time in recruiting, but I'm this is the MU fanboy in me speaking, so give me some leeway. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 12, 2007 -> 04:13 PM) The speculation you read on that site is pretty much useless but Burrell for Crede? f***.Yes. I wouldn't even think twice. Yeah really. Our team would certainly beef up against lefties, too, with both Burrell and Fields in the lineup. My only worry would be the White Sox' lack of a good hitting coach. Charlie Manuel knows hitting and it looks like Rowand and Burrell are two guys he's really gotten through to. We don't have somebody like that. Where's our Charlie Manuel?

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 12, 2007 -> 01:49 PM) By the way Barry Rozner is on a high right now. Just wait until Rocky Wirtz makes a move he doesn't like. Translated: one of Rozner's buddies gets moved out. Then his columns will take a different turn. Hopefully R. Wirtz makes the right choices, the one he made yesterday was a huge positive. As for some or all of the home games on TV, it's just a matter of time now. Rozner ain't already on a high? We already talked about this, but I doubt Rozner could point Toews and Kane out of a lineup yet he RIPS Tallon's every move. It's quite ridiculous that this town only has one quality hockey writer (Sassone), although the new guy at the Tribune (?) is looking pretty decent. As for your second comment -- I hope you're right, and it would be fantastic to get some second-half home games on television. Even without Havlat, this team has played three of the West's best very close, losing two one-goal games and winning one in OT. This group is fun to watch -- they stick up for each other, Koci beats ass and guys like Kane and Toews take your breath away when they have the puck. The people of Chicago need to see this team, even if it's in that "oh, hey, the Hawks are on TV!" way.

Good for him. I hope he gets that. In fact, I hope he gets more. By most accounts he's a hard worker and he deserves whatever the market (not 'the market' itself, but you get what I'm saying) is willing to pay him. I just hope he doesn't get all that and more from the Sox. I dislike Jerry Owens, but I'd rather have Owens as our 2007 starting CFer than Rowand at $75 million.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Oct 12, 2007 -> 03:08 AM) wow fields beat out some really good names....BA must think pretty highly of him....btw #3 was garza I'll admit that I didn't see many September games, but I thought most of his K's came because he was swinging through balls in the zone (moreso fastballs than anything else)? That's not to say his bat speed is slow -- it's something I can't put my finger on. Maybe he's more of a guess hitter and isn't good enough to protect when his guess is wrong? I should also say that I don't really care about the strikeouts so long as he's still able to slug around .500 and keep his OBP respectable (.315-.350, preferably towards the further end of that spectrum).

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Oct 11, 2007 -> 06:34 AM) Going for that 1st-round exit 3-peat, I see... Yep -- key being in the NCAA tournament. It's really too bad DePaul never gets the chance to go these days. That's okay, though -- January 26th will get here soon enough.
