  1. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 21, 2007 -> 04:28 PM) OPS doesn't include stolen bases, thus diminishing or removing the importance of speed. That's why its flawed, just like OBP removes power from the equation and is flawed. This takes those two and SB's into account. Your "stat" is similarly flawed because you're measuring a SB on the same 'plane' as a CS which isn't true. If you get caught stealing you completely eliminate the possibility of your scoring. If you just sit still on first you don't eliminate that chance of scoring. That's where that ~75% number comes from, IIRC. OBP and SLG% are fine. The reason people are worried about Owens SLG% is because if you don't hit for power, you're not going to continue to get on base for a very long time. Find me a guy who maintained a .350+ OBP for a prolonged period of time (multiple seasons) while slugging under .330. I'd say those guys -- if there are any -- are the exceptions, not the rules.
  2. http://www.timesonline.com/site/news.cfm?n...78568&rfi=6 I honestly don't know if Huntington is going to be any good but kudos to the Pirates for thinking outside the box a bit and not going with a proven retread like the Astros did with Wade (f***in' stupid). If Huntington is half as good as Shapiro is, the Pirates will be competing for the division within two years.
  3. Update those standings baby -- now a three way tie for second place with Florida coming back from behind to beat the Mets (bad for my parlay, great for the Sox). The Sox should lose to Johan tomorrow leaving eight games left. Minny should probably take at least one more from us this weekend. Detroit should take at least two from us as well. Basically, it'd be tough for me to see the Sox winning any more than five games the rest of the way, especially with (as already mentioned) Santana going tomorrow. Finally the Sox catch a break -- how 'bout dem apples!
  4. f*** the Astros for hiring Ed Wade. That's a f***ing load of s***. It's a joke how these retread GMs get chance after chance. Maybe they should hire Littlefield as his assistant.
  5. Palehosefan, did you hear anything about possible violations from UNC during Shumpert's visit? I didn't read the article, but here's a link... http://www.charlotte.com/sports_breaking/story/285009.html
  6. f*** me -- Toews out two weeks with an injury to his hand (might be his finger). Every f***ing year with the injuries -- I know it's only two weeks, but it's still rather irritating.
  7. QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 20, 2007 -> 03:32 AM) But win a game in the respect category. You seriously cannot be this ignorant (that's not the right word, but I'll go with it). It's not humanly possible -- a total unnnpossibility, really...
  8. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 09:16 PM) his control hasn't been hot FWIW, Floyd's BB/9 of 2.5/9 IP is the best he's had it at for any point of his big league career. I also believe that 2.5 number is well ahead of the league average, so... I love how you and DA always add in some hyperbolous (is that a word?) statement to finish off your Floyd posts. Please find for me where some poster said something about Floyd starting to show signs of becoming an ace or a top-of-the-rotation pitcher. Even the most optimistic friends of Floyd wouldn't say that. The Sox -- and a majority of the people defending Floyd -- are wanting to see if he can be an option for the back-of-the-rotation, a guy who can give the Sox 175 innings of a 5.00 ERA. Really not a whole lot more than that.
  9. I really think Brouwer is going to make this team -- there's certainly a spot open for one more rookie besides Toews and Kane. The key will be if he'll get enough minutes, and I'm fairly certain they can find him time on the third line with some combination of Sharp, Perrault, Williams or Bourque. Also, it looks like you can order NHL Centre Ice online now. That'll work out great for me in Milwaukee -- I don't think they can black me out from Hawk home games up here.
  10. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 02:47 AM) I didn't see the game but judging by the box score Fields, Thome, Richar, Floyd and Wasserman all had pretty good games AND we lost? Sounds pretty good to me. Pretty much the "ideal" loss at this point. It's also a 'good' loss because all of the other bottom feeders lost (besides KC) as well, so we're keeping pace.
  11. Hawks open tonight at the BJs. So far it's 2-2 in the 2nd, Barker and Brouwer with goals.
  12. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 11:43 PM) As for being a "true fan" of the White Sox -- I come here, don't I? I'm definitely a "true fan" and I don't care what anyone says about my criticisms making me less than a true fan, or my respect for the history and traditions of the game. I just like baseball, and the White Sox are my team. Which one comes first? I think baseball. I don't know. Who in this thread questioned your "fanhood", or said that you weren't a true fan (maybe I missed it)? I don't understand why you're taking such a defensive stance on this particular point...
  13. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 10:09 PM) Freddy Garcia looked pretty good last September. So we can expect Gavin to go under the knife next April? I love pointless (stupid? dumb?) comparisons.
  14. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 12:33 PM) I'm not denigrating the Braves World Series, or anybody else's. I'm just at a point in my life where "my team" winning is far less important than the history of the game and the game itself. This comment makes it seem like you're making the two (being a "fan" of your team and a fan of baseball) mutually exclusive when you don't have to. Maybe you aren't doing that but that's how I'm reading it. I can root like hell for the White Sox while, at the same time, appreciate the awesomeness of Joel Zumaya's arm, Grady Sizemore's bat, or Curtis Granderson's extra basehit record. I don't view the two as a balancing scale where, if my interest in my team goes up my interest in 'the game' (ie something bigger than an individual team or player) itself goes down. If anything, this season has provided for a nice change-of-pace. Instead of being tied to the White Sox, I've been able to do things like watch Jake Peavy pitch more often, see more Vlad Guerrero and, moving my scope outwards a bit, watch more left-coast games. That being said -- nothing will ever beat the emotions tied with the 2005 season. Not just winning the Series, but everything leading up to it; the scrutinized winter moves of 2005; the cautious optimism in the Spring; the near collapse in September -- even little things like the Timo bashing and eternal Willie Harris love will remain with me. And -- in my opinion -- there is no aspect of being a fan of 'the game', a fan of the game's history, that can even come close to touching the sensations tied with being a true fan of a team.
  15. Anybody know of a place to watch the new episodes online?
  16. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 08:26 PM) Josh Fields is quarterbacking right now on ESPN classic. Fields was QB when they had that one WR Rashaun Woods, right? I thought he was going to be a very good WR -- from the games I saw him in, it just looked like he had an uncanny ability to find the ball and go and get it.
  17. It's a near impossibility that the Tigers win the division at this point -- five out in the loss column with two weeks left is just too much to overcomebarring a miracle. I'll be rooting for Cleveland because I have money on them -- amazingly enough, both them and the Padres were getting better than 8-to-1 to win the Series, by far the best odds of any (realistic) playoff contender. I think Cleveland is going to be very tough to beat, as Sabathia and Carmona are the best one-two punch currently going in baseball. Playoff baseball also has a new (stupid) schedule that allows for more time off, so teams might be able to get by with a three-man rotation now.
  18. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 01:28 PM) And if you look a little closer, it's about how Thome won't make the Hall, at least according to Rob Neyer........ I didn't read the whole article -- just a little snippet -- but I don't think it's actually Neyer's opinion that Thome isn't a HoFer. I think he's just saying that because the voters didn't really give Thome his 'due' in the MVP voting, what's going to make them vote for him as a HoFer?
  19. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 02:31 AM) Only giving LDT the ball 9 times in the second half last year cost them the Superbowl. Firing Schottenheimer when he mismanages a game so badly was almost necessary. I thought I remember reading Norv Turner's career head coaching record being something close to 20 games under .500. If that's true, it's tough for me to understand how he got the job so easily. On an unrelated note, why hasn't Byron Leftwich been picked up yet? Has he deteriorated that much? I always thought he was an above average QB with an absolute cannon of an arm...
  20. QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) yeah i mean look at the D-Rays. All of those #1 picks have done such a great job for them. Let's see... David Price will enter next season as a top five pitching prospect without even having thrown a pitch in professional baseball. Evan Longoria just had a .900+ OPS year in AA/AAA and is considered a top prospect in the game. Jeff Niemann, after multiple injuries, looks to have put himself back on the radar screen with a decent season for Durham. At the very worst it's looking like he can be a good back-of-the-rotation pitcher. Delmon Young just turned 22 and is already hitting at a league average (ish) level. BJ Upton is going to finish the year hitting .300 with over 50 extra basehits by the end of the year. Way to bring up the worst example possible. I'll also note that four of the above five guys would be top prospects/young players in the Sox organization right now. I love it when people who have no clue what they're talking about try to make a point...
  21. QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 03:00 AM) Never would have thought that 4 runs would be enough after that early start. All things considered, the Brewers being 1 out right now isn't that bad. I think you really need to put money on the Cubs to win the World Series. That would seem to be a no lose situation for you.
  22. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 11, 2007 -> 06:10 PM) I love College. Where do you go (if you don't mind my asking)?
  23. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 12:04 AM) Um, Sharp... Yeah, Sharp will probably be centering the fourth line or, if they want him to give him more scoring opportunities, put him on the third line with Perrault centering. Overall the Hawks are in a very good spot with their centers -- it's the best group they've had together since I don't even know when. Looking at 2007-2008 only, we don't have a true number one, but we have two pretty good number 2s in Toews and Lang and two pretty good number 3s Perrault and Sharp. You're also going to want to keep an eye on Troy Brouwer. I believe he scored 40+ last year with the Admirals. If Bourque doesn't show up and have a good camp, it wouldn't surprise me to see Brouwer sneak in on that third line. Obviously things can change, but this is what I think we're looking at come October: Havlat-Lang-Samsonov Ruutu-Toews-Kane (I absolutely adore this line -- I think it's a perfect trio. If anyone from another team tries to take a run at either of the rooks, Ruutu is going to be out there to put someone on their ass.) Williams-Sharp/Perrault-Bourque Lapointe-Perrault/Sharp-??? Koci Koci simply isn't good enough to play on a nightly basis, but you keep him around as a 13th skater. He strikes me as the type of guy who completely understands his role -- he's there to put fear into that other team. Is he a true heavy? Probably not, but he's not scared to go up against other heavies and he can certainly hold his own. This is starting to get fun.
  24. I hope you guys saw this: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-292358260607515714 Someone clean up all of the drool on my keyboard.
