On ESPN, what are the three yellow 'blocks' beneath the teams' names? Timeouts? Also, how does the challenge system work this season? And sorry U of I fans -- yikes, why even attempt that throw? That's too bad... -
The kid is amazing. Stunning.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Sep 1, 2007 -> 09:25 PM) That is two pitchers from last years draft already called up and contributing for the Yankees. The Yankees are setting themselves up for another dominant string of seasons. They have Kennedy, Wang and Joba to anchor the rotation and Cano, Melky and (eventually) Tabata who will all be dirt cheap for the next few seasons. All Cashman has to do is pay up for the star players who hit free agency, starting with A-Rod this winter.

What's the fan distribution for the Iowa/NIU game? I ask because I have some somewhat close friends who attend both schools, so I'm interested... -
So Luis Terrero is, in fact, alive. Good.

"Here's another hit -- Barry Bonds..." "Everything I Am" is amazing, best song on the CD in my mind. Kanye spills himself. You could tell he put so much into this CD, hopefully he'll outsell 50 twice over.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 10:50 PM) s*** just look at Ryan Howard...he was an older prospect (should people have wrote him off because he was a bit older for a first time rookie or should they have considered the fact he has amazing stats and part of the reason he was old for a rookie was partially because of who he was being blocked by...Jim Thome). Come on, man -- apples and oranges here. We're talking about a SS who's in A-ball or rookie ball versus a guy who hit the s*** (1.000 OPS) out of AAA pitching. There's no comparison there. And of course you have to look at specific circumstances. But these older guys who are still in A-ball have to rake through AA before they're on my radar screen.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 09:12 PM) I think that a lot of very talented players, who could be major league contributors, are lost in the shuffle due to age, and for no good reason. Ross Gload is a good example - succeeded at every level, and has been a .300 or near it hitter every year he has had any significant number of at bats in the majors (his success and obvious talent is why I was always pulling for him). Yet, beause he was stuck behind the likes of Konerko, Thomas, etc., he got a couple years too old waiting for his shot. He was then labeled as "not a prospect". If you overemphasize age, you bias yourself out of some potential talent. Bringing up Ross Gload versus the prospects that we're talking about is, in my opinion, comparing apples and oranges. There are plenty of AAAA types who are older (mid-to-late 20s) who, for whatever reason, don't get a shot. I could also name a bunch of them -- off the top of my head, guys like Jack Cust, Chad Bradford and to a lesser extent Roberto Petagine. Guys who dominate the hell out of AAA yet aren't able to latch on (for a certain amount of years -- Cust, Bradford and Gload have all found their roles) for a couple seasons. I don't think that's the similar to a 23 year old who is hitting the bejesus out of SALLY league pitching.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 31, 2007 -> 08:53 PM) I have this battle all the time with various folks in here... unless he's 30, age is pretty irrelevant. That's pretty funny. Age is pretty much the first thing I look at after the general "statistics". Age is incredibly important.

QUOTE(bmags @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 05:32 PM) the clean version of k-wests' graduation leaked. I'm debating whether to grab it. I already did. I'm going to buy the album when it comes out, but I couldn't resist. It's so f***ing fantastic. He sings "Barry Bonds" with Lil Wayne. I'm so giddy -- about halfway through it -- it's outstanding.

I can't believe nobody has taken the Devil Rays -- they're clearly the team Sox fans need to be rooting for right about now. They're only three back!!!!

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 10:51 PM) I don't think there will be too many bargains. The Yankees and Texas are both in the market for CFers and both have no problem spending money. I wonder if the Sox would take Johnny Damon off the Yankees hands if the Yankees ate some of the contract. I don't even know if he can play CF anymore or LF for that matter. This hints at the question I've been asking all along... Robo keeps saying Hunter is going to get huge huge money, but who is going to give it to him? The only two teams in the AL who I can see bidding for Jones and/or Hunter are Baltimore and Texas. In the NL it's more of the same story -- there's some mid-sized payroll teams who can use a CFer, but none that strike me as teams who are going to pay $18 per year for either of the two afformentioned names. I'm really starting to latch onto the Andruw Jones bandwagon. I think most metrics still have Jones playing well-above average defensively in CF, and I'd say he's a good bet to rebound. Perhaps the Sox could get him on a contract similar to the one Boras got for JD Drew with the Dodgers -- the Sox get Jones at a (relative) discount for the first two years -- say, $12 million per -- but before the third year, either Jones gets a big bump in the contract or is able to opt out of the deal. I know people say there's no chance of it happening because of Boras, but I can see this being a case where the Sox actually have a shot.

I just flipped over to Best Damn Sports Show -- no, I wasn't watching it, just flipping "upwards" and Fox Sports Milwaukee happened to be in that direction -- and they had Tony Romo on. He had on a f***ing Abercrombie and Fitch t-shirt. I guess that makes sense, seeing that he's an Eastern Illinois grad, but damn -- you're a starting QB for an NFL team and you're wearing A&F? What a f***ing stroke...

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 04:05 PM) 2. They have Ruben Amaro in charge of the Dominican operation. Not sure when this happened but Amaro is one of the pioneers of bringing Latin American talent to MLB and he has arguably some of the best connections in the DR. They have two DSL teams which is a good thing. Not sure you could provide an answer on this, but could you give a ballpark answer on when Amaro was hired? Before the season? During the season? Past year? Your info is much appreciated, BTW -- I (among others, I bet) have taken to diligently reading your posts. It's clear that you do your homework and know your s***, so... Keep it up, I guess.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 02:15 AM) Not a model, the model. And once again, you've missed the point, but that's okay. I've missed the point? That's funny, coming from the person who said: Can you find for me where I said this, Gregory Pratt? Please. Much thanks in advance. Because if I didn't say it, it really serves no purpose in the thread. That's fine though -- continue preaching why the Braves are awesome. If I have a question Braves, I will make sure to consult Braves Oracle Pratt.

Did anyone actually watch? How did he look?

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 01:48 AM) I just think it's funny that people are saying, "Why are you holding up the Braves as a model of anything? LOL -- I'd say the vast majority of us don't need you to tell us that the Braves are a great organization. If you actually feel the need to explain to us why the Braves are a model, then I really shouldn't be having this conversation with you in the first place.

So I see you're not the only one doing something better with your time. Gosh damn, I did one freaking exercise of my Accounting 30 homework and it took me 50 minutes -- and I still have four more problems left. Crimany...

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 01:35 AM) which is more valid than any uncited Yes, and that's perfectly fine. The criticism is that when every other f***ing post is Schuerholz this, Schuerholz that, it gets a little annoying. And maybe you don't see it that way, but when there's about five people calling you on it... Well, where there's smoke, there's usually fire. That's fine though. If you find it necessary to make everything "Braves", be my guest and continue to do so. And I'll continue to call you on it. Kapeesh?

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 10:59 PM) I expect the Braves to be really good next year with someone like Silva or Livan Hernandez in the 3/4 spot Sort of like this year? I mean, I know Atlanta has a fantastic rotation and all, what with two good pitchers (Chuck James has been awful since the second half, and Braves fans at BTF say he's not going to keep up with the league average ERA he's at now). What's wrong with citing my source? If people say, "Oh, if you were GM, what would you do better than KW? Who says that would work? Why is that a good idea?" Because John Schuerholz knows a little somethingsomething about being an Executive. Que? I'm sure somewhere in this statement there's got to be some relevance to what Tony said, but sheesh.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 08:38 PM) I have no hope for the Brewers this series....the Cubs have such a pitching advantage this week against them. It's Cardinals or bust, and of course, Oswalt returns to face them, and he'll miss the Cubs. What are the pitching matchups? I've now had two teachers (not even counting yesterday!) refer to this upcoming series, so I guess it's a big deal. I've tried my best to keep my head in the sand, what with these f***ing jamoke Cub rooters wearing the preppy Cub hats -- note that if asked to name the 25 man roster, I could probably name as many or more players than the average fan. Not that these Brewer fans are a whole lot better, but I'm not sure the Brewers would have enough to beat any team in the first round of the playoffs, so...

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 02:26 AM) He won't have Bill James' computers on the mound with him. Ahh, I always love people who don't understand the statistics to make the "calculator" or "computer" joke -- you even managed two in one post! That's totally orginal... High five, Gregory!

I know Jeff Suppan isn't being paid by the Brewers to be their Godsent ace, but can some of those cliches that you always here about veterans like him actually pay off tonight? Can Suppan "know how to win" tonight, please? Asking for a sweep is probably unreasonable, but can't Milwaukee take two of three? Man -- Wrigley is going to be rocking tonight.
