  1. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 01:22 AM) Has Hawk given you a Wow moment? He's given me, "Uh, wow, I guess," moments, that's for sure... Hawk occasionally will say something that'll make me think a little bit. I just really don't like DJ. He doesn't add anything to the broadcast. He agrees with Hawk on anything that comes out of his mouth, and he doesn't provide any insight. DJ's most interesting moments come when he talks about the Japanese league and his experience(s) there, but even those are weak at best.
  2. Having Stone here is great. He really shows the insight that a color commentator is supposed to have. For example, that little thing Richar did with his glove on the stolen base -- I would've never picked up something like that. I don't think DJ has EVER given me a "Wow!" type moment of insight that Stone gives multiple times during a game.
  3. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 12:22 AM) Don't know if you've ever gone through the Hall and its members, but it isn't just the Sandy Koufaxs and the Babe Ruths of the baseball world in there. You don't know if I've ever gone through the Hall and its members? David Wells has a career ERA+ of 108. That's doesn't even qualify as "very good". He doesn't have a very good peak. Put him side-by-side with another great pitcher of his time, Greg Maddux. Maddux has nine seasons better than Wells' best season (1995 -- 200+ innings of a 141 ERA+). On David Wells' Most Similar Players' list, not even half are (or will be) Hall of Famers. Wells doesn't get in on either of Bill James' HoF Monitor or HoF Standards. Need I keep going? Wells isn't a Hall of Famer. I appreciate the huge laugh you just gave me, though, by saying that Jamie Moyer is a Hall of Famer. Thanks for that.
  4. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 07:53 PM) He's a HOFer in my book. ... If Wells gets into the Hall, they better change the name to "Hall of Pretty Good".
  5. If the Sox can't work out a deal right now, it will be revisited in the offseason, that's for sure. Also, if Tejada came here, I'd bat him second. His power may be fading a little bit, but you can still count on him for a .350 OBP.
  6. So the Community Shield was yesterday -- Chelsea clearly thinks a lot of the trophy, as none of Drogba, Shevchenko (sp?) or Terry started (Terry might be injured, although he was listed as a possible substitute). Man U won in PKs. Malouda scored a pretty neat goal for Chelsea, fighting off Rio Ferdinand in the box.
  7. QUOTE(Shadows @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 07:01 PM) Except Ted Ginn is not JUST a returner and will be able to play the WR position unlike Hester who wont. He'll be able to lineup in the WR spot, sure. Will he be anything more than a 3rd wideout? I know I wouldn't want him starting for my team, and again -- with the 9th overall pick, I want a starter.
  8. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 06:28 PM) I honestly think Josh will have the range of a quick 3B like Inge Inge is arguably the best third defensive third baseman in the AL -- Fields is going to have his range? I don't think so. Fields doesn't have nearly the range that Crede had. It's not because of athleticism, that's for sure, so I'd guess it's about instincts and having a quick first step. He also doesn't have Crede's hands. The best thing I can say about Fields is when he's forced to come in and barehand a ball, say on a bunt -- he's done a spectacular job on those. Fields reminds me of David Wright -- a pretty good athlete who still has some work to do. With that said, I still wouldn't move Fields from third -- besides maybe for next season, as dumping Crede would be pointless. Even if he becomes average (I'd say he's slightly below as of right now), his bat is more valuable there than in the OF.
  9. QUOTE(Shadows @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 06:24 PM) Miami needs two things, a QB of the future and speed.. they had just about zero team speed going into this season.. So they take Ted Ginn who is prolly the fastest player in this draft. He is not asked to start and he will be able to be eased into playing, and his speed will not only help on offense but on returns as well.. Smart GMs can find "speed" in later rounds. With the 9th overall pick? You're looking for an impact player, not a kick returner with above average but not spectacular receiving skills.
  10. QUOTE(Shadows @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 06:05 PM) Houston was going to take him at 10, St. Louis also had him at their pick shortly after that.. And guess what -- the pick still didn't make sense for Miami. We'll see this season, I guess...
  11. Hah, somebody actually defending drafting Tedd Ginn 9th overall? That makes my morning...
  12. This show keeps getting better and better. That's good because I'm starting to 'down' a little bit on Entourage. I love the plumber giving advice to Bret. "They're like bears. You gotta give them a little bait." And last episode, flipping the bird -- awesome.
  13. FWIW, Tom Hicks said that Tiexera turned down something like eight years, $140 million. He might like Atlanta, but even so, ATL is still going to have to give him Soriano money for (at the very least) five years.
  14. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 01:35 AM) I went to the games Friday and Saturday so I didn't see today's game What did you think about the ballpark? I went there a couple of years ago and thought the park was beautiful, but man -- the surrounding area makes the Bridgeport of a couple years ago look like a walk in the park. Yikes -- parking was definitely an "adventure" -- have things changed at all?
  15. Somewhere fathom is very, very pissed off. Blow a five run ninth inning lead -- f***ing embarrassing.
  16. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 09:01 PM) AL pitchers will not walk Bonds to get to Konerko, or Thome. His OBP would be WAY lower batting 3rd or 4th on the sox Yep, they'll pitch to him. And instead of the 20 (?) homers he's at now, he'd be at 30, because the park he'd be playing in is WAY more friendly than SBC. Bonds would make a lot of friends with the people on the RF concourse as well as the people with seats by the LF bullpen. He'd be playing pepper with Art Kushyner all year long.
  17. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:47 PM) I'm also hitting Bonds 3rd with Thome 5th; has more to do with Bonds getting on at a much better clip than Thome, who still gets on at a ridiculous .425 clip too. I was playing around with that. I would actually put Bonds second and hit Konerko third, just because I'd want to put as much OBP as I could at the top of the lineup. ----- Please, people, don't bring ridiculous BS into this thread. Bonds is mediocre? If that's true, then the Sox could definitely use a helluva lot more "mediocre" in their lineup.
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:44 PM) He had a great April and a very good June, but if you just ignore the OBP, he's looking at 3 terrible months so far this season. Haha. Well, if you ignore looking at 'win total', the 2005 White Sox sucked balls.
  19. QUOTE(MurcieOne @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:41 PM) that worked well for us this year. Maybe we should've thrown money at Danys Baez or Justin Speier, because everybody knows throwing gobs of money at bullpen guys is the way to go. You say this like a.) left field is an important defensive position in the first place and b.) we've had a stellar defender out there the past couple seasons.
  20. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:38 PM) neither did 85% of fans in the Comcast poll. those idiots. The same people voting in that poll are the same people who call into the post-game show and say that the reason we suck is because Podsednik and Erstad are hurt. Those same people would be cheering for Bonds as he's getting on-base every other at-bat and the Sox are in first place next season.
  21. Bonds. Discuss. My lineup: 2B - Richar (Gonzalez against tough lefties) RF - Fields DH - Thome 1B - Konerko LF - Barry Lamar 3B - Crede C - Pierzynski SS - ? CF - I'm going cheap here -- Owens/Terrero platoon? Sweeney (if he can play average CF defense)? -Allows the Sox to slip Fields and Richar into the lineup without a heckuva lot of pressure. -Doesn't block any prospect and it's a one-year deal. -Attendance boost. Even if people hate Bonds, they'll show up to boo him. Somehow I doubt people will boo him if the Sox are winning and Bonds is a part of that. -It doesn't really stop the Sox from rebuilding -- they could deal Thome and slip Bonds in at DH. I believe it makes sense financially -- one year, $15 million or so -- especially if you move Contreras. And it wouldn't preclude the Sox from filling out their bench and bullpen -- even a couple million would only put the payroll at about $105 million.
  22. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:23 PM) no one mentioned that until you bud You said you'd rather spend it on pitching. Let's go, start naming these pitchers. God knows our rotation has so many holes -- oh, wait, we have Buehrle, Vazquez, Garland and Danks all average or better locked up through next season and guys like Floyd, Egbert and Gonzalez ready to battle for the fifth spot (that's if Contreras continues to suck). So you're going to spend $10 million+ on the bullpen. That's brilliant. You can keep up your dips***, demeaning attitude and call us "kids" all day, I really don't give a damn -- you've brought up ZERO good points about why Bonds shouldn't be signed. Oh, right, we need "speed and defense", because EVERYBODY knows you can't win unless you have Juan Pierre out in LF. Juan Pierre brings speed and defense, so he'd probably be better than Bonds, right? And he's a GREAT CITIZEN, too, so we'd have a happy clubhouse! Good times all around!
  23. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:16 PM) I actually seem to recall that being AJP, but maybe that's just my memory. I always find it funny for Sox fans to talk about "clubhouse cancers". Really? This team brought in AJ Pierzynski and Carl Everett, two guys that LOTS of people hated.
  24. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:19 PM) The sox need speed, defense, and a fairly cheap option for the outfield. bonds is none of those. i would rather spend money on pitching than bonds. On pitching. How nice. Let's give Scott Linebrink a one year deal worth $10 million. At least the clubhouse would be nice and dandy, right?
  25. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:12 PM) oh please, that was plenty civil, especially considering the other stuff that is said on these boards Oh it was plenty civil, just really really f***ing stupid. Can't put up a good argument so you resort to stupid s***.
