White Sox vs. Tigers, 8/05/07 (W)

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:08 PM) I agree. I hate this idea that we aren't in the business to have good citizens, but to win. Where in the hell does the rulebook say you can't win with guys like Konerko and Mark Buehrle? It is the high character guys with talent you want. I WANT to root for the Sox, because I like the players NOT just because I root for the uni. That's not saying you "can't" win with "good guys". But you're sacrificing making you're team a helluva lot better because you want to keep the clubhouse "neat and tidy". I'll repeat that the whole clubhouse cancer thing is overblown. AJ had nothing but good things to say about Bonds. Bochy seems to love him. He got into it with Jeff Kent who is a dick in his own right. -

QUOTE(mr_genius @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 08:04 PM) You seriously think the Sox should sign Bonds? Big distraction, career is going down hill... we need young players who can play defense and utilize some speed, not a 43 year old club house cancer who is way past his prime. Career is going downhill? I want more of those guys -- you know, guys putting up .500 OBPs. I'll take those types all day. Clubhouse cancer? Hmm -- didn't seem that way with all of his teammates coming out and giving him the congrats on tying the record last night. I think the media overblows that a helluva lot. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:59 PM) I wouldn't watch or care about a game any season with that man on the team. I might even depart from this board if we signed him. They could win the World Series with him, and I wouldn't care one bit. I'd cheer for every single opponent of the Sox that year. Including the Cubs. Kenny Williams' job is to put talent on the field, not put together a club of "good citizens". -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:47 PM) Umm...Willie f***ing Harris in CF. DUH. Harris AND Richar on the same team? As long as they can both wear number *1*, I'm down. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 07:43 PM) Hell yes to that poll question. No s***. Picking up Bonds for LF next year would be an awesome move, and if Kenny is really confident that the pitching is good enough to compete next season, it's really an easy decision to make. I'd then put Fields in RF, Crede at third and go cheap for CF (Baldelli? Owens-Terrero platoon? Hell, even Sweeney?). -

Boone Logan understands his job. Boone Logan passionately fires the pill past the lefty at home-plate. Boone Logan has no reservations -- none -- about taking care of business on the field. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 06:51 PM) Sweeney never looked overmatched, he just looked like he wasn't ready because he doesn't get agressive with the inside pitch. After his first week or so, all a pitcher had to two was plant a fastball on the inner half of the plate and Sweeney was meat. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 06:47 PM) Richar looks like he sees the ball well and is patient, combined with few k's (or so it appears from the early parts I've seen) and good speed and you got to like what you see (plus he has a live bat to get xtra base hits). He doesn't look overmatched like Anderson or Sweeney did, so that's definitely good to see. I'm still reserving judgement but so far, so good. -

Tight strike-zone early on here. Floyd's had a couple of good hooks that have seemingly hit the zone but have been called for balls. I did like seeing 93 on the gun in that AB. -

It helps that they're winning, but this team is a helluva lot more enjoyable right now. My only hopes are that they're able to deal Podsednik for a live arm by the August 31st deadline (BP suggested they're going to do so), and a decent two-month stretch by Jerry Owens doesn't convince the Sox that he's anything more than a fourth OFer. Yikes -- Josh must be hungover. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 05:35 PM) Gavin really does have a nice breaking ball, he needs to find consistancy with it though. He's got a good sinker going right now, but so far I've only seen two pitches from him (as a starter). If these next few starts don't go well, I really hope they try and convert him to a reliever full-time. Tell him to let loose with his fastball a bit and put some more 'bite' on his curve because he's only going to be out there for an inning. -
Amen, LCR. The "cheating" in baseball is a topic I find rather intriguing. Pitchers have always cheated (scuffing baseballs, using some type of tarnish, etc), hitters have always cheated (corked bats, stealing signs) -- it's just another aspect that baseball interesting. On that note, has anybody read this book? It's written by the guy who runs USS Mariner, IIRC.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 03:33 AM) If you're so anxious to defend Bonds, then I'll throw these names out and you can busy yourself refuting their cases as better hitters than Bonds: Griffey, Thomas, McGwire, Sosa. Only throwing the clear juicers for kicks. I've looked it up plenty of times, no need to do it again -- Bonds beats all of them quite easily. That's fine though -- I can't force you to debate if you don't want to. I just called you on your "assertion" and since you haven't really done a whole lot to prove your side, I think I know that nothing more needs to be said from me.
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 03:27 AM) That is a debate for another time that someone else will have. You brought it upon yourself. If you don't want to debate it, don't make comments like:

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 03:22 AM) He isn't either. And __________ is *clearly* better?
-
Check out Bonds' 1992-1997 seasons, and consider that Bonds was also an elite defender and baserunner during those years, and you have arguably the greatest six year periods ever.
-
Hah. Classic Bud Selig face there -- jaw open, mouth agape. Absolutely histerical...
-
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 02:46 AM) Thank God he didn't do it off of Maddux. What a shame that this guy now stands alongside Hank Aaron. Steroids or not, he's the greatest hitter of my lifetime. I'm not a big historical guy, but this is still very neat to see. And I still love his homerun 'trot'. Everybody else was wondering whether he got enough of it, he knew it the whole way.
-
That was a cute little flip by Richar...

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 4, 2007 -> 11:30 PM) Fields puts up similar numbers with a little less defensively and a lot more Ks and he's projected to be an All Star. Is somebody in this thread really projecting him to be a perennial All-Star? I don't really care to comment about that, but as far as a Crede vs Fields comparison, I'd be pretty dissappointed if Fields can't top Crede's offensive numbers over the next six seasons. Crede had some power but that's about it. Fields' last season-and-a-half in AAA and the majors suggest that he can be a .260/.330/.450. As far as being an All-Star caliber player? I think he's capable of having a couple seasons where he puts up All-Star numbers, but I doubt he's going to be David Wright.
