  1. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 02:02 AM) Here's what it comes down to -- the highest position we can have is eighth, the lowest is tenth. Am I missing something? I think the Sox can still draft 7th. Here's who we can't catch: Tampa, Baltimore, KC, Pitt and Florida. Washington is out of the picture -- they won today so they have 73 wins, the most we can get is 72. Houston has 72, Cincy has 71 and San Fran has 70. The worst the Sox can draft is ninth. The best case scenario is 6th -- that would require San Fran winning tonight and tomorrow, Cincy and Houston winnning tomorrow along with a Sox loss. Of course, the way this final week has went, I'm sure we end up with the worst case scenario of 9th. We suck against lefties but Fields and Konerko are all but guaranteed to combine for three homers and 7 RBIs against Robertson. I'd love to see a 3-2 loss where Contreras goes eight strong and Fields and Richar both hit solo shots but that won't happen either.
  2. A miserable season gets worse. Unbelievable. I think the best the Sox can draft now is 6th -- it's looking instead like 6th-to-8th. What a joke. With this win we pretty much guarantee we'll be drafting ahead of San Fran... I can already see them selecting the guy I'll want, mainy because they'll spend the $$$ to get it done. I'll also guess that the Cubs piss on our graves some more tomorrow by beating Cincy and putting the Reds ahead of the Sox as well.
  3. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Sep 30, 2007 -> 01:32 AM) I was wondering how he got Pilash out of Pilar...unless he is french or something. Pilar looks god awful...slow as can be like you said skating in sand. He also had an awful turnover that led to the third goal. He's been brutal -- I'll be pretty pissed if he makes the team. I'd guess Johansson is out with this Sopel here, and I think Richmond has done enough to stay as the 7th defender, making it Seabrook, Keith, Vandermeer, Wiz, Sopel, Zyuzin and Richmond.
  4. Anyone watching the game tonight? If so... -Why is Dan Kelly calling Pilar "Pilash? -Why is said player (Pilar) skating in sand? My gosh, I didn't think it was possible to be slower and less agile than Cullimore but I think I've found that person.
  5. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 10:26 PM) When Juan Pierre got a $44 mill deal, it made a lot of sense. I believed that for a while, but I think I (we) have been proven wrong on that front. The organization (Kenny Williams?) fell under the belief that it needed a "leadoff man", that putting Iguchi there and being done with it wasn't a good option. Bringing Podsednik back, even at a relatively cheap price, blew up in the team's face (and they deserved it, as much as I hate to say it). Then again, I think the LF spot was doomed to fail from the start. I wanted the Sox to go after one of the guys Cleveland grabbed (Delluci or Nixon) -- they've been hurt and bad -- or Alou -- he's been really good but hurt. The only feasible option would have been with the ballsy move of going after Bonds. Still, the organization would've been better off just putting Mackowiak in LF to start the year.
  6. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 09:06 PM) It is very easy for me to sit here and say they better have a backup plan but it's much harder to do. This is where scouting and your minor league system comes in. They need a surprise guy basically every year, like Wasserman. People are penciling him into the bullpen when, in March, only the hardcore knew his name. Which also goes to show the unpredictability of bullpen arms. Who is to say, for example, that Wasserman will be good once the league gets a good look at him. I like him, but I believe it's a legitimate question. I'm not questioning what you said here, 29th, but why can't that guy be Oneli Perez (in 2008)? His numbers over the past two years at Kannapolis, Winston Salem and Birmingham -- ~153 IP, 178 (!) Ks, 106 (!!) hits, 38 BBs. That's a 4.68/1 K/BB ratio and a WHIP of .81. I know there's more to putting together a bullpen than "luck" -- although I understand sometimes I probably make it sound like that -- but I really hope Kenny doesn't do a heckuva lot different than he did last season. For all of these guys this year to suck -- Aardsma, Sisco, Masset, MacDougal, Thorton (to a lesser extent) -- that's a lot of bad luck right there. As I said before, you have (or should have) three spots currently locked up -- Jenks, Logan and Wassermann. If Thorton and MacDougal aren't traded, I think both have good enough track records to count on a reasonable bounce-back in 2008. That leaves you two more spots -- I'd give one of those spots to a guy who can go multiple innings -- Broadway? Haeger? Perez? That leaves one more spot which I'd fill with a guy who stands out in Spring Training or with a guy you bring in -- if I was GM, I'd look for Shingo Takatsu #2.
  7. Unbelievable... are the Sox trying to best the Podsednik signing from last year? Logan should be guaranteed the LOOGY spot for next season -- he held lefties to a .606 OPS and even though righties torched him, I'd expect his numbers vs them to improve. Why are we still having these conversations about this lefty-righty bulls***? You have your LOOGY for next year in Logan, you have your ROOGY in Wassermann. You have your closer. Fill the rest of the bullpen with guys who can get outs -- hell, I don't care if they throw underhand.
  8. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 03:22 AM) The Padres can compete with anybody cause of their 1-2. I've been touting Chris Young (the pitcher) for a while, but I didn't realize how bad he's been the past two months -- 48 IP, 34 ER.
  9. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Sep 29, 2007 -> 03:05 AM) LMAO@the Brewers. They say a cat has 9 lives, right? Well the Brewers had about 21, and still couldn't win the worst division in baseball. fathom, I now know where you were coming from. I've already had 4 people (two of whom don't know s*** about the Cubs) call me talking s***. You got it easy. Weeks makes the final out two seconds ago and that f***ing song is blasted in my dorm. They proceed to sing for about ten minutes. Then they walk out of their room -- "we're going to the playoffs". And then one of them quoted Dane Cook -- "There's only one October!". Funny thing is, I could ask the lot of 'em to name every guy on the Cubs roster right now and I'd bet a large chunk of change they couldn't do it.
  10. Where's our Lance Broadway? (Have a laugh, Flash.)
  11. Less than a week away, fellers. Unfortunately they've gotten a little dinged up this past week -- Ruutu sat out a few days, Havlat tweaked his groin and obviously Toews is gone for the next several days (at least). I'm pretty sure the defense is shaking out to be Seabrook, Keith, Wiz, Vandermeer, Zyuzin and Johansson. I'd guess Richmond takes the 7th 'extra' spot because they want Barker to get regular minutes at Norfolk. That doesn't necessarily inspire a whole lot of confidence but it's nice to know that Barker, Byfuglian and Hjalmarsson are just a phone call away. They just picked up Karel Pilar from Atlanta but I'd hope he's nothing more than depth. Thursday at Minny, the fun really starts (probably about the tenth time I've said that this summer). I'm also thinking that final forward spot is going to one of the Badgers, Skille or Burish. So here's my guess at what we're looking at on Thursday: Samsonov-Lang-Havlat Ruutu-Toews-Kane Sharp-Perrault-Bourque/Williams Bourque/Burish-Williams/Burish-Lapointe Koci Anyone know how the final two lines are going to shake out pairings-wise? Sharp is going to be on the wing, yes? I'm mainly concerned about the 4th center spot -- if you put Williams there you're nuetralizing his offense. Any guesses?
  12. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 03:29 PM) Ha, I think so. Who knows, maybe Freddy will come into the playoffs and pitch a gem with his left hand or something, since it'll be a big game and all. It's gotta be on the road, though. Freddy + road + big game = $$$.
  13. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 03:24 PM) Their bullpen is putrid as well. Trust me, I'd love to see the Phils advance but I think they're the weakest of all the playoff contenders. Beyond that, I guess we'll just see what happens, no point in really arguing it. They have Tadahito and Rowand -- and Tokin' Freddy, somewhere, too -- aren't we pretty much obliged to root for Philly?
  14. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 03:07 PM) It doesn't matter how good their offense is, they'll be controlled in the playoffs. If Philly gets in, I highly doubt they win more than a game, if that. I dunno... If Hamels continues what he did in his last outing (5 IP, 6 Ks), Philly is going to be tough. Their rotation isn't spectacular beyond Hamels but then again, whose is? ------------------- Webb vs Francis tonight. That's how I'll be starting off my weekend.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 02:10 PM) So you think a manager who likes to keep his players all on an equal level and doesnt let any one player take control of the clubhouse is a good fit with a player who requires to be treated above all other players, and doesnt like to be controlled. No, I really don't know how that would work out. I don't think anybody knows, and for you (or anyone) to act like it would be a forgone conclusion that it wouldn't work is silly. Then again, I tend to think Bonds clubhouse "issues" are overstated. Who has he fought with? Who has openly said they disliked him? Pierzynski had no qualms with Bonds. The only real breakout was with Kent, and Kent fights has been a jackass on every team he's been on (not my word).
  16. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 12:35 PM) Maddux' velocity was nowhere near what it is now when he was Broadway's age. I just don't like the suggestion that his velocity is "Maddux-like" because of its implications. His velocity is bad and his control is nowhere near Greg Maddux level. Greg Maddux on acid could throw more strikes than Broadway. I'm sure beautox sees Lance Broadway as a future Greg Maddux, 300 game winner, HoFer. That's exactly what he said in his post -- right? -- and kudos to you for nailing him on it. Damn, man -- taking things a little too far?

    The Office

-The Creed moments were still pretty funny. -Kevin and Angela were WAAAY overexposed. -You can't fit one funny Dwight/Jim interaction into an hour long episode? -Starting off the episode in Michael's house... why, exactly? Rex I completely agree with you -- it really dragged on this week. Hour episodes aren't needed, even if they can be considered two thirty-minute episodes.
  18. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 28, 2007 -> 04:39 AM) I'm sorry, Keith, but Bonds doesn't belong in Chicago, wouldn't be a fit in the clubhouse, would clash with Ozzie and he'd wind up injured, deaf blind and dumb. What you call intangibles -- I call reality. Ah so you concede. And a-thank'ya very much.

    The Office

//gets up and walks out of movie theater with a half hour to go. I'm not liking this. I think I'm now understanding why they went with only half-hour episodes.
  20. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 27, 2007 -> 08:39 PM) Bonds+Ozzie=chaos. Heh -- I tend to think Ozzie and Bonds would be a perfect fit, and I'd guess that fathom (among others) would agree with me. Ozzie is the one manager -- maybe Pinella -- that says enough 'out-there' things in the media to take some of the attention away from Barry. Plus, for all his flaws Ozzie is a players' manager. I think there's been one player to really complain about Ozzie and that was Anderson, and even that wasn't some huge backlash -- just a little bitter pill for starting the year in Charlotte.
  21. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 26, 2007 -> 03:21 PM) Bonds = potential contribution Just to clarify "potential contribution", we're talking an OPS+ of above 150 and an OBP of .450. So what? It's a one year commitment. Averaged about 485 plate appearances the past two years. Oh no! God forbid! ...in left field. But go on. Sure there is. Thanks but see ya later #24. is a bargain? That seems right. Intangibles!!one111

    The Office

Woohoo! Hour long episodes for the first handful of Season 4. Let's see if the writers still have their mojo -- a lot of series' tend to hit the crapper in a hurry (if they even make it this long). Hopefully The Office has at least another good season or two left.
  23. QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Sep 27, 2007 -> 02:56 PM) Their head of PR has been Tony Ohman and Jim DeMaria has been there for at least 20 years. The older lady is Barbara Davidson but she wasn't head of PR. 29th, I thought I read that there's almost two 'factions' -- Pully's side (now) and Peter's side. I hate to ask a question that's based on speculation alone, but what are your thoughts about that? Please tell me Pully isn't going to be around this organization much longer...
  24. QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 27, 2007 -> 03:56 AM) How cool -- he almost homered!!!!!!!!!! My little brain doesn't understand the need for sarcasm... Why Greg Pratt, why?
  25. Both teams have four games remaining after this, correct? If so, I'd say this is a 'must-win' for the Brewers. Can't lose to a team that has Ryan Ludwick batting fifth.
