Contreras is even worse of a pitcher in the bullpen. He cannot pitch quickly, or out of the stretch effectively, so runners will steal on him even more. Plus, he cannot warm up quickly enough in a bullpen at a moment's notice to pitch effectively on the mound..

"Either side" assumes more than one.. Example: I am not a fan of either of those teams. However, you are correct. It is not considered correct grammar.
