  1. QUOTE (kev211 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:49 PM) SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman A gon is now a red sox 1 minute ago Best believe the Werth deal played a part in this.
  2. QUOTE (pktmotion @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) ...granted 62 AB's is not nearly an adequate sample size. but his .612 OPS last year isn't gonna cut it for a power position like RF and for a team trying to compete. Especially after their top FA signed with a team in their division. They're not paying Halladay/Oswalt $15 MM+/year to see the Braves win the NL East. It wouldn't surprise me if they looked for a power RF stopgap and kept Brown in AAA for a couple more years. lol
  3. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:27 PM) The Phils still have Ibanez, Victorino, and Brown. No room for Quentin. Yeah, they've been grooming Brown as Werth's potential replacement for a couple years now. The job is his unless he goes 2006 Brian Anderson on them.
  4. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:14 PM) The RedSox faithful are going to be pretty damn restless if they don't upgrade the team this year. Especially with VMart leaving. I agree. But Beltre at 3B and Youk at 1B is better than Youk at 3B and PK at 1B.
  5. QUOTE (3E8 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 05:43 PM) In my offseason plan for another site, I suggested trading Viciedo to Seattle. The Mariners were last in MLB in both batting average and slugging, Vicideo's two main skills. They might be able to use him in their rebuilding process. The AL West has a ton of LH pitching talent (especially if the Rangers re-up Lee) which Viciedo absolutely mashes (.960 OPS this season vs. LH). Seattle declined the option on Branyan, so their DH spot is open. They also just traded 3B Lopez, but it'd be hard to imagine a strong defensive-minded team experiment with Viciedo there. 50 PAs.
  6. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 05:18 PM) Am I the only one who thinks Werth is grossly overrated? He's a good player, but $18M/year for 7 years in his 30s? No way. This contract could end up worse than Soriano's. He is now. lol. Before that I thought he was pretty underrated and one of the top bargains in the game. But yeah, not anymore.
  7. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 05:56 PM) Anyone think that Boston might offer to Konerko? He did grow up early on in Rhode Island. They would be better served just resigning Beltre and leaving Youk at 1B.
  8. They're in panic mode over at SOSH. Daily double of the Gonzalez deal falling through and the Werth signing. You think this board can be negative? They're vicious over there.
  9. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 12:12 PM) Buehrle is easily worth more than 10 million in jersey revenue and PR alone. To the Sox? Maybe. To any other team? Not a chance.
  10. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 11:57 AM) I'm not accusing you of calling him a 4A washout... I'm suggesting that his peripherals don't mean s*** when determining his value. This is the same reason that every single year the saber projection world predicts that Buerhle is going to have a career worst year... that with the exception of one season never even comes close to being true. If it fails miserably 90% of the time for predicting his performance, how valid is it for establishing his value? Answer.... it isn't. The market would value him much higher than stats would suggest. I respect your opinion. But I wouldn't pay 2005 Mark Buehrle 15 million let alone 2011-2012 Mark Buehrle that much.
  11. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 11:07 AM) A few thoughts.... If K/9 were a true measure of his value, Buerhle would be a AAAA washout or pitching in Japan by now. But you look at his body of work and it screams legit #2-3 starter on any team in MLB. Plus, he's left-handed, which in MLB means if he could roll the ball across the plate, he's going to get good money. So, will $14-$15m limit some teams' interest? Sure. But if the Sox wanted to move him, they'd find takers. Didn't say he was a 4A washout. But 15 million? We all love Mark because we're Sox fans and he's been here for what seems like an eternity. But nobody in their right mind would take him with that kicker and those peripherals at his age. Not unless we sent a TON of cash with him. Like at least 8-9 million.
  12. QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:52 AM) It's a clause that says that, if he's traded, a guaranteed 5th year is automatically added to his otherwise 4-year contract... and the salary for that additional year is $15M. So... if he stays with us, there is only one year left on his current contract. But if traded, his contract is two years. As such, any team interested should expect that they'd be acquiring a pitcher with a two-year contract... the first year (2011) at $14M, and the second year (2012) at $15M. Frankly, I don't see that clause hurting his trade value. In fact, it could help us since whoever might acquire him would be getting more than a 1-year rental. Bottom line: We're not on the hook for that money... unless we decide that it's in our best interest to kick in some money to sweeten another team's trade offer. Thanks. What a strange ass clause. And I disagree. Mark ain't goin' nowhere. 15 million for a guy with a 4.2 K/9? Not happening. People need to forget about Mark Buehrle being a legitimate trade piece (Peavy as well).
  13. Quick question: the $15 million dollar trade kicker or whatever the hell it is that would come into play in 2012 if Buehrle is traded would be paid by the Sox or the team trading for him?
  14. QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:14 AM) I'd rather have Longoria or Tulowitzki over Zimmerman. I was talking 3B. And you can't go wrong with either Longoria or Zimmerman. But I feel Zimmerman is slightly better defensively. Longoria has 'lexi syndrome sometimes. He botches the simplest of plays. Zimmerman is pretty automatic and has insane range. But I'd take Carlos Gonzalez over both of them.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 10:06 AM) He was really pissed off about the Nationals lack of effort to bring back Dunn. His quotes certainly didn't sound like a guy who plans on sticking around when his contract is up, but 3 years is a long time. Alright then. I understand that, I guess. But man would it take some kinda haul to pry him away. Dude is spectacular. And everybody knows how much I love Longoria. But Zimmerman > Longoria
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 09:56 AM) Do you really think after the bad blood last year that Rizzo and KW are likely to make a trade now? Especially after we just signed Dunn? If I'm another team, I might just take my chances with Jermaine Dye on an incentive-laden deal versus giving up young talent for Quentin...maybe there are a lot of NL teams willing to put him in the OF, but I don't think so. A lot of the turf stadiums are gone, but the NL has always been a home for more athletic outfielders until recent years. Plus, they really have to get some indications on Zimmerman and Strasburg...and even to start putting together a Harper timetable for ETA, before they start making significant monetary commitments going forward. What "indications" are they supposed to get on Zimmerman? He's the best 3B in the game and locked up through 2013.
  17. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 09:40 AM) We all think that payroll addition is there this offseason but what if Rios was on the block for a young speedy CF that could replace Pierre at the top of the order eventually. Why would a team want to trade a young/speedy, and more importantly cheap, CF for a soon to be 30-year old due $51 million over the next 4 years?
  18. QUOTE (quickman @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 09:14 AM) If they are "all in" like Williams states I really do not see a place for Viciedo on this team. In fact I think Viciedo will eventually be traded to get bullpen help. Morel will be the only "chance" player we take. Morel has true defensive skills he will stick. If Konerko doesn't resign, Lee might be the next target as you get a veteran, decent defensive player who is a good locker room guy. I do like the beltre Idea but I have no idea how this guy is in the locker room. I'm not against trading Viciedo. But not for bullpen help. That would be a pretty crummy return for a kid you threw a major league contract at.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 08:31 AM) If Paulie says no, how about going after Beltre to play 3B and making Viciedo the firstbaseman. Its a longshot all things considered, but may be even a better answer than Paulie if Viciedo is legit. I love Beltre. But his agent is Boras and he's looking for I believe 5 years.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 09:30 AM) Or Bonds off of Colon in the game where Bart Kd him in his first three ABs. Memories. It's funny. I really enjoyed the 2003 season as a whole. And even though we came up short, god damn did it end spectacularly well for us anyway (Bartman).
  21. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 07:45 AM) Not necessary. If you dont want to contribute, move on I know. I was drunk (still am). I apologize. All I saw at first was the actual post and was like wtf? lol. Didn't really read the title until after.
  22. Hell no. People need to realize that Gordon flat sucked last year. He had a solid final 50 games or whatever. But that doesn't mask the fact he sported a beyond pathetic .581 OPS for nearly half a season. Next year is a "prove it" year for Gordon. Him in the 3-hole would be a joke.
  23. The Red Sox owned this f***ing deal. With Martinez and eventually Beltre and Felipe Lopez signing elsewhere, they accumulate 5 of the top 50 picks in what's supposed to be a loaded draft. So they'll be able to restock the system rather easily.
  24. QUOTE (VAfan @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 09:05 PM) Does health explain a lot of PK's and D Lee's 2010 seasons? PK was completely healthy for the first time in years, while Lee fought various ailments? If this is true, and there is any chance Lee is not fully healed, then it would be silly to invest in Lee when you are trying to win a championship. Konerko was a top-5 hitter in baseball, measured by RC 27. He generated 8.32 runs/game. Lee generated 4.77 runs/game, to rank 87th. Overall runs created was 121.1 to 76.9. Carlos Quentin was more productive than D Lee last year. If your interest was trying to maximize production on the cheap, then you might sign Lee and hope he rebounds by being healthier. But if you are trying to pass the Twins and win the championship, you can't give up the potential run-producing difference between PK and D Lee. I don't think anybody is implying that PK wasn't worlds better than Lee last year.
