Ship Full of Spiders

I was just there with the family a couple weeks ago. I was extremely impressed by how the place runs. As far as where to stay, the Beach Club is fantastic (if a bit pricey). Their pool area is the best I've ever been to.

With every great player (and yes, I consider Mark a great player) there will be rough patches. MArk's rough patches have been few and short-lived. Above him being a very good pitcher, he's even a better guy and teammate...at least from what we know. I met him once before a game (along with a bunch of other people clammoring for autographs), and he was patient and made a point to say hi and sign everyone's hats, balls, tickets, etc. I'd like to see him pitch for the Sox until he's ready to retire. And I totally agree with the statue.

Beckham seems to be back. Those runs should have been unearned for Danks. How could that missed catch be called a hit? Other than that one inning, Danks was sharp! Jenks did his job...and then some. It's good to see him using the hook more. Nine in a row! Let's at least split this series.

It was a tough decsion, but I had to throw my vote to the Sox.

Wow. This thread has become quite engaging. I don't know if I've ever seen so many * in a thread. I'm glad I didn't post right away because it gave me time to think. At first I wanted to jump in and defend greg, and I'll still say this: He's definitely the target of many angry posts. But I cannot agree that Quentin is any better than lousy in the field. The catch, well that was awesome, but Andruw Jones could have caught that while dumping a fistful on sunflower seeds in his mouth because he would have taken the correct route to the ball. I'm exaggerating, but not by much. Watching Jones and Rios in the field on Sunday was a treat. These guys make it look so easy, especially Jones. I'm waiting for him to catch a can of corn behind his back while chatting it up with a fan. Quentin is always jumping around, and he looks uncomfortable every time a ball is hit in his direction. I've realized that I release a held breath every time he does catch the ball and it doesn't bounce off his head ala Jose Conseco. If Jones has returned to form (and there's no guarantee that is true), he's a much better choice...scratch that...he is THE choice to play right field over Quentin. TCQ is a beast at the plate, and the Sox need his bat. I like the idea of him DHing and having Jones and someone else playing the field. I don't think Jones can do it all the time,maybe not even most of the time. Quentin bat = good. Quentin glove = not good.

Too soon...if he's moved back at all. He seems to be getting his confidence back. Leave him where he is for a while, then maybe move him up, but not to the 2-spot.

I would hate to see The Tank go down. He's looked good at the plate, and his defense has been serviceable. I like the idea of packaging Teahen in a trade, but who would take him? The best option the Sox have is using him in place of Kotsay, but unless Kotsay is traded or DFA'd, that's not going to happen. I suppose it's a good problem to have, but I have a bad feeling that the wrong decsion will be made and the Sox will end up with Teahen and Kotsay both getting way too much playing time.

I'm starting to believe that Freddy is healthy. He obviously doesn't have the same velocity he had years ago, but he's found other ways to get outs. I'm not convinced his arm is "going to fall off". He will have a hiccup here and there...all pitchers do. But I think Freddy will be fine.

I've seen plenty of players that are right-handed and bat either switch or left-handed, but there are not many who are left-handed and bat from the right. I wonder why. How many players started batting the way they do when they were little leaguers? If a player became a switch hitter, is that something they picked up early or later on in high school? So, let's start a discussion. Whether you play organized ball or just mess around in the backyard with the kids, do you throw right or left-handed and how do you bat? The only "organized" ball I've played is slow-pitch softball, and I always threw and batted right. But now when I play wiffle ball or a pick up game with my kids and their friends I'll bat left and right.

I saw Williams warming up in the pen yesterday, and I was concerned. Rightfully so because he promptly gave up a hit to the guy he was brought in to face and get out. Who cares about lefty on lefty when the lefty pitcher you use is no good?
