    The Art of the Pickup

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 10:46 AM) When you walk up to them, make yourself look real big, so they know who the dominant male is. Don't blink when talking, either. Blinking is a sign of weakness. And don't show your teeth, that's the sign of a witch. Also, if they are staring you in the eyes, don't break eye contact until they turn away, again, for dominant male. Make high pitch screams to any male that also walks up, it warns off other predators. This is the art of the pickup. but i'm short.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Oct 12, 2008 -> 12:11 AM) I usually just go to parties with my roommate, he's the type to use "lines" so when those fail I usually come up with the "what a goof." Then I start simple conversation. the question here is whether he realizes he's being such a good wingman or not. regardless, well done. haha
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) Like I've said before, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Dye is traded. i just think that would be a mistake. he's still a great player and of him/thome/konerko, he's the best of the three. i know that helps his trade value, but i really don't wanna have thome and konerko BOTH in that lineup next year. though you're right, i wouldn't be surprised either.

    The Art of the Pickup

QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) ^^^ Psst, a little secret. Woman are human too. And in more ways than not, just like you. In some ways, women have it harder than men in this situation. A woman asks a guy out and too many guys think it's basically an invitation for sex. It has gotten much better through the years, but still most woman feel they need to sit back and try to get some clueless guy to ask them out. So when Mr. Clueless uses some lame pick up strategy, she is somewhat relieved he finally asked her out and agrees. Meanwhile he thinks it was his incredible pick up line and using his wing man. She has a very good idea about yes or no before you even open your mouth. So the simpler the better. Ask and shut up. Pick a non threatening micro date. In college it is as simple as "I was heading over to the Student Union, wanna grab a coke?" If she says yes, ask about home, pets, vacations, siblings, and other simple common stuff. If she says no, she is busy, smile and ask her if that is "busy, don't ask me again or busy, I'd like to but pick another time". Smile, either way. Not everyone is interested in everyone. And over and over again, women have told me they appreciate honesty, and manners above all. Not the "yes those pants make your butt look fat" honesty, but the basic human quality that links with respect. everything i need to know i learned at soxtalk.com actually, ironically enough, i ran into a girl i sort of know last night and we ended up hanging out and talking till like 5 in the morning. i should post about my failures w/ women more often if this is how it's gonna turn out.
  6. So I'll preface this with the fact that I've been in lengthy relationships almost non-stop for all of my high school through college life. But now, for the last year I've been single and I feel like I missed the part where I learned how to meet women. Which brings us to today's question: How do you approach a girl you don't know? At a bar/club/party or even in a normal, everyday situation - say a girl in class (for us college folk)? Do you go it alone? Do you use a wingman? And do you approach it differently based on what you're looking to get out of it? I ask because a) I'm interested in hearing about other guys' tactics, b ) I've been inspired by Neil Patrick Harris' character on How I Met Your Mother and c) because i suck at it.

    What do i do?

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 09:57 AM) ^POTY. It's not even close anymore. i completely agree. that was brilliant.
  8. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 07:20 PM) haha Obama does have the most annoying supporters of all time. with that i will whole-heartedly agree
  9. Interesting and funny little e-mail my friend sent me. I think it's worth perusing... especially for all of you who scream "liberal media", because the media's not making a fuss of all this stuff...
  10. QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 11:04 AM) I'm hoping he didn't mean John what are you talking about? i'd take that stud any day of the week.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 08:33 AM) OK, so... no one here makes an issue out of it. You start a thread with a video of it, asking if anyone else caught it. Then you say its a non-issue to you, and you just hate the Obamatons who want to make it an issue? When, in this forum, YOU made it an issue? how dare you.
  12. QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 08:26 AM) You can't teach speed. It's not how, it's how many. (cuts both ways, for bunts and home runs) Balance works There is a reason bunting is still around. The whole point of offense is to score runs before the third out, not just to avoid outs. (splitting hairs I know) there's a reason it's around - it's because people can't let go of the past and it "looks good". it's been statistically proven to be useless. counterproductive even. personally i'm ok with doing it on no outs with a runner on 2nd to get him in sac fly position. but otherwise giving up the out to just HOPE that another guy gets a single (any other hit would have scored him from first) is just kind of ludicrous.
  13. why don't any of you swish bashers actually look at the stats! his batting average to balls in play showed that he was sickeningly unlucky in the first half, and things would have rebounded if he hadn't been benched for Griffey. If you recall his average was up to the .230s and then Griff showed up. without consistent playing time, nobody does well, especially a guy who's been struggling. he. will. be. fine.
  14. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 07:29 AM) Some of us care because its an important aspect of the sport of baseball, and the only guys on our team this year that could do it with semi-regularity were bench players who only started due to injuries (Wise and Uribe). Well balanced teams need guys at the top of the order (i.e., 2 spot) who can advance runners. Hitting to the right side and laying down bunts are typically the two best ways to do that, and we have sucked at the latter for a long time. Remember: "Its amazing sometimes what a bunt can do!" i'm with felix. fine, it doesn't hurt to have a guy who can do it, but we should NEVER be giving them outs to get a guy from first to second. a homer scores 'em anyway... stupid ozzie.
  15. QUOTE (Fantl916 @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 07:34 PM) In my opinion, and I'm gonna be a little outside the box here, under the radar because that's how Kenny Williams operates, I think we won't end up with any of the big guns everyone's talking about. Rather I think you will see subtle moves that some will like and others won't, but moves that potentially have very high upside. Here is what I'm thinking... actually your initial logic is wrong. we usually DO get the guy Kenny Williams has "always been wanting", or at least KW goes after them. It just usually happens a year or two later. Griffey's a perfect example. KW had always wanted him, we talked about it here for years, then POOF! there he is. i bet you that between Roberts, Figgins, Burnett and Beltre that we get one of them.
  16. Not only that, but out of those 4, Dye/Thome/Konerko ALL in their mid to upper 30's. Swish is what? 27? 28? Why on EARTH would you trade him over unloading one of those other base cloggers? (i'm specifically looking at you Jim)
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 06:08 PM) Quentin wasn't a rookie. his first full season.
  18. QUOTE (BearSox @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 07:17 AM) the poll options for this are terrible. Players generally get better with age, and while all four of these players had great seasons that will be tough to duplicate, that doesn't mean if they don't have as good or better seasons statistically next year that they have regressed. If I had to say who was going to regress next year, I'd tell you Jermaine Dye, but we have already begun to see his regression since 06. sorry buddy, but MANY rookies experience a sophomore slump. so you're looking at both Quentin AND Lexi there. Danks may avoid it, being as this WAS his 2nd year and he's solid, but i also think Gavin will regress a tad as well. I got w/ TCQ, Lexi and Gavin. All regressing
  19. QUOTE (daa84 @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) i am also a big getz fan....at least i became one with the year he had this year...if his emergence of power he showed is legit, i liken him to an older ryan sweeney at 2b not sure what we would have to pay orlando hudson, but im pretty sure for the money simply plugging getz in would be a much more cost effective option, as i dont see a big enough difference in their numbers to justify something like 8 mil per year i'm getzing excited.
  20. QUOTE (WCSox @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) No, what's "silly" (and that's putting it nicely) is your comparison of Joe Sixpack in the upper deck to a young player who wears the same uniform, has a locker in the clubhouse, and has been in the same starting lineup as Buehrle and Junior. Like mom and dad (and unlike Joe Sixpack in Section 534), the players in the starting lineup actually KNOW these young players and benefit from their support. They often spend six days a week fighting with them for a common goal. Support from those close to us (in one way or the other) makes all the difference. let's keep politics out of this ok?
  21. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 7, 2008 -> 03:35 PM) I would argue partially the opposite. These voter registration drive in places like VA, NC, and IN could boost Obama by 1-3% because pollsters don't know how to factor in new voters. i agree, i think we'll see the same phenomenon we saw in the primary where, on election night, obama blew everyone else out of the water because of NEW voter turnout. honestly at this point it looks pretty impossible for mccain. i'm predicting a landslide - it's not going to be close.
  22. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 12:59 PM) Ya, this qualifies me in the "When do you start feeling old" thread.....wow. um, i'm 22 and i didn't get that.
