QUOTE (Felix @ Mar 18, 2013 -> 01:53 PM) Anyone who gives two s***s about journalism? I've said all I can say. Have fun, gents. lol Are you really defending journalistic integrity and standards? If you care about journalism, perhaps you should go after the big guys, the ones who are making millions/billions off of creating false stories, using shady sources and basically taking advantage of the fact that most people believe anything they read. Its odd that I cant recall you ever venturing in the filibuster to talk about the media and the problems with factual reporting. I guess your outrage is selective?
-
And if Steve is wrong I hope everyone mocks him, he went out on a limb, you live with those risks.
-
And in Steves, wait for it, OPINION the source was "close" and was "confirming" rumors that were already on the internet about Rose coming back Monday. Are we now going to get into an argument of what is "close", because we may as well just start arguing if pizza is good or if its hot/cold. This is why news is bulls***, because nothing means anything when you really break it down. Unless there is a name attributed to a quote, I expect its a flat out lie.
-
Confirmed by who? Did steve ever say the bulls confirmed? No Literally if I look at my cat and say "Kitty stay silent if you think Rose will play tonight" and she says nothing, its technically confirmation. I know how newspapers get away with this bulls***, its not really that difficult.

QUOTE (Felix @ Mar 18, 2013 -> 01:27 PM) Just because you're giving something away doesn't mean you shouldn't be held to an expectation of integrity. Just look at the SB Nation blogs. They're all free for people to use, and yet they are held to a higher standard. If they started throwing bulls*** stories about sources confirming things that haven't been confirmed, they wouldn't still have a blog. And like SS2k5 said, the "Ok, I lied, but it's your fault for not thinking critically" is about as weak an argument as humanly possible. I dont need an argument. The internet, tv, radio, news, is full of bulls***. Anyone that wants to believe journalists even from the most respectable newspapers should do it at their own peril. I have no real need to discuss why I should have to take the time to protect dumb people from themselves. I spend most of my real job being paid to do that, this is a website to have fun. If you cant comprehend that, if you think we are on the level of Sun Times, New York Times, Financial News, Journal of American Medicine (Ill let you pick which ones you consider "legitimate" or "ethical"), then I dont know what to say. It seems Steve had some information. It seems that Steve decided to run with that information. If he is wrong, I expect blow back. I expect people to get all in a fuss about how he is wrong. And most likely, Ill just approve the posts. Because journalism in todays society = opinion not fact. And opinion doesnt mean s***. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Mar 18, 2013 -> 01:28 PM) Yes. Think about all the "free" services out there that people complain about: Facebook Pandora Email accounts (specifically Yahoo) If you put s***ty information/products/etc out there for everyone to see and advertise it, then expect brush back. How has there been brush back? Even if Steve is wrong, more people will come to the site tomorrow than 3 days ago. From a simple marketing/economic perspective it actually was pretty brilliant. Look at this thread, there are just a certain amount of people who will believe anything. No matter what. So I assume some will believe that Steve did have inside information, it just didnt pan out. Because that happens more times than not, even to the most reputable reporter. The fact is, the only people with real inside information, are usually not allowed to say it.
-
Felix, You are comparing a free web blog to a paid for newspaper. I would assume there is a higher level of ethical integrity when you are CHARGING someone for the information. Had Steve charged people for a complete lie, Id agree that is pretty shameless and wrong. But when you give something away, can you really complain about the quality?
-
Well I didnt lie, the post was made hours before I saw it. I didnt really realize that steve wasnt citing something real until it already had spread pretty far. At that point I posted and stated that I did not believe it. That is not a lie, that is the truth. If people want to take Steve's word over mine, feel free. Each of you have the ability to determine who is more believable. That being said, if you actually read the article after the updates, its really flimsy. People just still want to believe in it.
-
So wait, are you holding us to national enquirer standards, fan blog standards or legitimate newspaper standards? Im waiting for someone to explain why Flapship is at all reputable? Does it have any history of inside information? Has it ever posted any new information? Are the majority of the articles opinion? Are the majority of the articles supported by inside sources? Before you should consider something "reputable" it should do something deserving. I dont trust Deadspin/ESPN etc, and they should be considered far more reputable. But then again, its my belief reputable journalism is about reporting facts and Flapship is about opinion. I apologize to anyone under the age of lets say 14 (thats being generous), they may fall for the smoke and mirrors of a well designed website. The rest I would hope would look at the author and ask "Does this guy seem like someone who would have inside Rose information."
-
Krush, I agree. If I was going to do something like that, I would have been way more evasive, so that it wasnt technically a lie, but it was merely using second hand information to make something appear to be more true than it is. But what is the point of that? That being said, might as well just watch the hilarity ensue, because even though every legitimate source is saying otherwise, people still want to believe.
-
Oh come on, disgusting is a little far. TMZ reported that Lil Wayne was dead. Journalists make s*** up every single day of the week, often for reputable publications. This is a fan blog that had sent out a tweet to 300 people. From that 25,000 people have read the article. If you are over the age of 10 and cant recognize that is not a legitimate source and that you should take it completely with a grain of salt, that is on you. Not to mention, 2 days ago I posted: I hate to say it, but Ill believe it when I see it. It can take up to 18 months after an ACL surgery for the knee to feel “normal” again. Thus, something could happen this weekend to further delay the return. Whenever Rose is ready to play, he will play, and Im quite fine with that. A day ago Zoom posted "The thoughts expressed in the commentary on this site are soley the beliefs of the author and do not represent the views of any other individuals or Flapship as a whole." That was a day ago. Its funny in a really terrible sad way.
-
Id do respect a man who when faced with a crushing reality, decides that he is going to double down on the bluff. At this point I think that Steve wants Rose to come back so much, he is actually trying to will it to happen.
-
Jenks, Its not even dont believe what you read on the internet. Its just far better not to believe anything until proven otherwise. But I guess thats why a skeptical/cynical b**** like myself doesnt get worked up over rumors.
-
I really dont care to be honest. If that is how Steve wants to write, I have no problem with him being the National Enquirer. Would I do it? No, but thats because my reputation means something to me. I do find it amusing that a blog with approximately 300 twitter followers/facebook friends, would be able to get this much traffic over a single tweet. It just further proves the lack of critical thinking skills. Just because you read something does not mean its true. He could have just wrote the article about why he believed Rose would return tonight based on X,Y, Z evidence. By the time I actually saw it, it was far to late, so sometimes you just roll with the punches.
-
Think it should have been Wisconsin 4 and K-State 5.
-
Im pretty confident his first game will be a road game.
-
It really makes me want to write an article about why you need to be critical of what you read on the internet because literally anyone can say anything, and if you put it on a reasonable looking website, it gives the appearance of legitimacy.
-
lol I thought someone would mention it to me last night, and I was just going to laugh.
-
Yeah not exactly hard to beat writer to the punch when you dont have to wait for legitimate information.

2012-2013 NCAA Basketball thread
Soxbadger replied to He_Gawn's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Well Rock I probably wont post tomorrow because Im about to go out and who knows when Ill be able minded again. So good luck. I got nothing against the Buckeyes and Wisconsin plays them better than MSU, so who knows what happens. Hopefully Wisconsin gets a 4 seed in the NCAA, a Big 10 Tourney would just be icing. Guess that should have gone in big 10 tournament thread, oh well. -
I posted my opinion so if they run with Steve over me thats just their fault. (At least thats what my defense will be if Steve is wrong)
-
I was sleeping when this "news" broke. When I saw my phone I thought people were re-tweeting my get well to Lil Wayne.
-
Remember when Steve had a hunch that Lebron was coming to Chicago...
-
I had problems with cheap microsd cards on my galaxy3, but I got a better one and its worked great.
-
Wow now watch Wisconsin get bludgeoned by 20 points tomorrow.
-
I never knew that rule, pretty clever. You get another 10 seconds if you call a time out.
