QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 12, 2009 -> 03:07 PM) No...there's a package where you can watch minor league games, but 80-85% of the game are AAA. There weren't enough Barons games to interest me, and I watched most of the preseason games, so I got to see all of those guys play but Shelby. I just listen to the audio and then "watch" through Gamecast. Dang. I'd've ponied the $30 to watch some Barons games. I see the gameday audio is free, though.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 12, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) I've found this season, in one of those games recently that you knew was over by the 3rd or 4th, that the best therapy was to turn on the Barons game through milb.com or "watch" it through gamecast. They show AA games on there?

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 11, 2009 -> 09:57 PM) Look dude, I apologize. You are correct, I went over the line. We're all frustrated. I just don't understand how I'm painted as a pessimist when from very early in the 05 season through about september of 06 I was one of the most optimistic people on this board. My pessimism began in early 07 - for which it was justifited. I didn't see how they were gonna do it last season, but they did it anyway, which I'm happy to admit I was wrong about, but it was very clear that the reasons they did it last season was because of exceptional years by more than a few players who might not have the potential to replicate. The pitching staff suffered at least one major subtraction in the offseason and the additions were questionable. Moreover, I made it clear many times that I bought into the BABIP theory with Floyd and it seems completely relevant after all, and that extension looks about as bad a move as we could've ever dreamed because of it, which is something I was really afraid of. I could not see Alexei and Quentin being that good, especially Alexei in the clutch with his 1,000 grand slams. One month in, it's even worse than I thought it was going to be, and more wheels are falling off by the day. Are there solutions? Absolutely. The solutions are to bag this season, because this team sorely needs to reconfigure. There are several things that have needed addressing for several years - the abundance of dhs, the backup catcher question, CF, and dealing pieces at the deadline to get the talent we need to move forward is the way to go. To that end, I am out - way out. This team has so many fundamental things wrong with it that I can't imagine fixing one or two of them, let alone twenty. For many teams, optimism would seem appropriate, in particular the 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and after a few weeks, the 2008 team. For the 2009 team, I have simply not seen a team look this bad since very early 01 or late August 99 and I fear far worse is yet to come. Go blackhawks. Good post. I'm all for both pessimism and optimism, it's the only thing that makes this board tick with good dialogue. In fact, I'm probably a pessimist myself, and I hope I haven't dissuaded you from posting anything negative. There are plenty of proud people of that ilk around here, as I'm sure you've noticed. I just don't like when people defend it by calling it a realistic approach - especially in early May.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 11, 2009 -> 05:39 PM) I'm assuming every time someone slightly misuses a word in any way you have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. It must be incredibly difficult for you on a day to day basis; for that you have my sympathies. I'm also assuming that every time the phrase "a realistic prediction" is used on sportscenter, you must be frothing at the mouth, jumping up and down, and screaming at the top of your lungs "SPECULATION! SPECULATION!" Thanks for crossing the line here between message board life and every day life, bud. I'm calling you out specifically, and nobody else. I've seen you on more than one occasion back up your pessimistic antics with nothing more than, 'I'm a realist and you're not.' That is not an exact quote, but I'd prefer not to go digging around for your quotes when you know what you've said. Not only only do you slap the face of every optimist here, but you call them ignorant and blind at the same time. So here's my point: I did not misunderstand what you said in the slightest bit - I'm telling you to read what you say and understand it for yourself, instead of spouting off and calling foul any time somebody calls you the f*** out.

It worked! I will buy you a box of cookies.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 11, 2009 -> 02:55 PM) It's possible to have a negative prediction of a course of events that happens to be more realistic than an alternatively positive prediction. As of now, this team is not playing well, and their roster and inconsistency would suggest that a negative view of the remainder of the season might just be more realistic than a prediction of a runaway first place finish. You know what I meant. Let's not do this dance with semantics. That would be the pessimistic point of view, yes. But it is almost entirely speculative, which is not realism. I don't need to argue semantics with you on this, the dictionary has already done it for us.

QUOTE (BobDylan @ May 11, 2009 -> 01:40 AM) Woody Allen, Larry David: Whatever Works http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVi3zs_S96M (Is his hard on for Scarlett over, finally?) P.S. Can somebody teach me how to embed videos here?

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ May 11, 2009 -> 10:56 AM) Am I "realistic" or not a "big enough fan" if I have a pessimistic view of this season? Neither, pessimism and realism have very little to do with each other. And please stop claiming that they do. Don't take this to say I am telling you to stop being pessimistic. Continue on with that, if you like.

MLB Network Showing '05 World Series Video
BobDylan replied to Chi Town Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Not to pick on you Chi Town Sox, but do we really need a post every time there is a replay of that stuff? -
QUOTE (BearSox @ May 10, 2009 -> 02:05 AM) I couldn't agree more. She is beyond annoying and provides nothing to the show. You don't like the love story? Oh my god! Who is Sawyer going to choose!!!???? Agreed. Cut that slut out of the show.

QUOTE (bmags @ May 10, 2009 -> 12:38 PM) Eh, people b**** about Chicago weather too much. boo fn hoo dress warmer/cooler. It comes with good reason. Now that I live in a city where the only complaint is rain (and it doesn't rain all that much), the complaints are only that much more validated to me. The weather in Chicago is a form of torture.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 7, 2009 -> 03:37 PM) My girlfriend got a call when I was with her yesterday informing her that a student showed up to her class after testing positive for the Swine Flu. I of course, having just started feeling sick yesterday, freaked out for 15 minutes, and than later on in the day they called and retracted the statement saying that the student had actually only had the regular flu. http://grammartips.homestead.com/than.html It's gone on for too long, man!

QUOTE (DanksFan @ May 7, 2009 -> 08:27 AM) I played for 3-4 months got to level 40 and quit. Boring game, and not worth paying for... However... Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 will be totally different stories....

Going to rewatch The Reader later because I didn't really pay attention the first time. But the biggest disappointment of that movie? Kate Winslet's tits. They're hideous.

There was a study I read somewhere at some time that said the best athletes in the world can play anytime, anywhere. Gordon Beckham doesn't have what it takes because...in day games, he has a .188 BA, .300 OBP, .350 SLG, .550 OPS. In 1978, for St Louis Mike Tyson hit .222 with a .222 OBP, .333 SLG and a .556 OPS at Wrigley Field where they typically play day games. That team lost 93 games. By contrast...in 2003 Derek Jeter hit .305 with a .364 OBP, .440 SLG and a .867 OPS in day games. That Yankees team made it to the World Series... 1) Do you think it is a coincidence that the Cubs sell out all their games? 2) Why isn't there a baseball team in Alaska? ...Is it because there are like 30 days of night there? 3) Why do all the best golfers in the world play when it is early in the morning? (In fact, I've never seen a golf game at night...) 4) Good baseball players perform during the day. Gordon Beckham does not. 5) Why do you think Babe Ruth is the best baseball player in the world? Because he hit all those homers under the sun. They can try sending him to the military where they'll get him up at the crack of dawn, but I really don't think that's going to help him. He went to college. He has long hair. His nickname is Slayer (if you don't know what that means, you're only pretending and hiding in the corner blushing...) It is in his blood. There isn't a blend of coffee in the world strong enough to wake this kid up. We're stuck with what we got and this is on the organization. I point my finger at them. But...I predict that he will be on the team next year as the starting shortstop. It wouldn't be the first time KW and JR were too afraid to admit their mistakes. Lillibridge and Podsednik are on this team for a reason. It's not to perform or give Getz rest or plug a gap for an injury in CF. It's because they didn't get the f***ing job done and get the players they needed and they don't want to admit it because Sox fans eat a lot of pizza and would eat their faces off. Plus, they don't really have any other choice. It's only a matter of time before Obama starts a war with Cuba, and they'll have to send him back. Unless they want to put Nix or Lillibridge there, there really is no other option besides Beckham. I wouldn't mind if they signed somebody like Nomar Garciaparra (a guy that can bat anywhere in your line-up) but then they'd have to do a bobblehead night for him. But hell...I wouldn't be surprised if they had Beckham up in AAA working on a slider and a knuckleball if he continues at this rate for the next few weeks. The Sox don't have many in-house options for a knuckleball pitcher and it's pretty obvious to see the success Boston has had with Tim Wakefield. His winning percentage is almost the same as Nolan Ryan (Wakefield .534, Nolan Ryan .526.) Plus Wakefield has had such a long career. Heck, Alexei has almost as many grand slams as Albert Pujols, so it doesn't make much sense to move him from SS...unless, of course, they traded for Derek Jeter and put him behind the plate because AJ is getting old and Tyler Flowers is still very young. Also, to save some cash, if they really are strapped like they say, I imagine the Red Sox would trade us Wakefield for Beckham straight up. He's been great for the Red Sox, and they have an obvious thing against players who play well in the day. Look, they traded Babe Ruth...need I say anything else. This way the White Sox could: 1) Get rid of Jose Contreras because he only pitches well when it is warm. 2) Keep Alexei at SS or move him to C 3) Spare the organization of any racial tenstion because Alexei is... and Beckham is... (do I really need to spell it out?) Plus, Beckham would fit in well at Boston because that's where the movie The Departed takes place. But I would rather watch Scarface, Gigli, The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards and Anchorman before I'd watch that movie again. It won so many awards, but it was too out of this world for me to believe. Jack Nicholson at the end? Give me a break. Mark Wahlberg should go back to rapping...is is SOOOO bad at acting. Most of his scenes were in the day during that movie too. Maybe him and Beckham should get an apartment together and become vampires?

The Jungle meets Brutalism: my first newspaper profile piece
BobDylan replied to Gregory Pratt's topic in SLaM
QUOTE (bmags @ May 6, 2009 -> 07:48 AM) Pratt ~ It was thoroughly reported. My criticisms are as follows: • It takes far too long to begin. For instance: "Joel Ebert never believed he would become the student member to the Board of Trustees, and it seems he was right. Despite winning 1,200 votes, 43 percent of all cast for trustee, he will be on the outside of student government looking in next semester, where he started." And the next four paragraphs would work much better lower down. Though in your lede you give us some basic information about them being disqualified, that info would be much more effective once knowing what in fact took place. I'd imagine that the nut of this story is not that the members were disqualified. I get the impression that this has already been reported. Rather, the point of this story is all the questionable events leading UP to the disqualification that had yet to be reported on. In that, I believe your lede should change to more resemble that. For my tastes, I don't believe your transparency in how the new administration (the fraternity ones) hadn't gotten back to you should go anywhere but the bottom. We had not yet learned all the foul play that had happened, so it doesn't make sense in the middle why they should avoid you. What he said. This isn't a question of whether you can write or not. It's clear you can. This is only a question of structure, and what the story is representing. -

QUOTE (Kalapse @ May 4, 2009 -> 02:50 PM) When I read greg's post I was going to come right back with this, it's quite perfect. Unfortunately, you beat me to it. Josh Fields 100 PA into this age 26 season: .256/.354/.360/.714 Joe Crede in his age 26 season (2004): .239/.299/.418/.717 Add on .036 points of slugging to Crede's '04 numbers and you have his '05 numbers. Just comparing their offensive output here Josh is producing much like pre-2006 Crede only with a whole lot more walks and K's and less power and infield popouts. I don't consider him a #2 hitter and don't think I ever will. Not his fault, though. There aren't any other options.
