QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 04:43 PM) All the sudden I can't get flash video's to play. Nothing happens when I click the play button. YouTube works fine. Sites like Vimeo for example... I am running Google Chrome on a new Lenovo Laptop. Any suggestions? Chrome comes with Flash pre-installed, not sure what the issue may be, perhaps clear the cache, make sure an addon isn't blocking, and make sure you didn't disable flash in options.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 8, 2015 -> 04:02 PM) You said "Even at the low end, that is hundreds of millions who would like to kill people over a cartoon. The other percent are not victims here at all, but many are in some way enablers themselves." So if not all, you are getting pretty close. 20% want to straight up kill cartoonists, the other percentage are enablers. That's not what he said. The 20% includes both of those.

I'm getting pretty sick of all religion, discussion of religion, and people who credit god for anything good in their lives, but drop the "mysterious ways" excuse for all the bad.

I have it on good authority that if you complain about the winter, it stays around longer.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 2, 2015 -> 05:16 PM) So how about you apply that standard to whether or not a guy should be put in a chokehold for selling loose cigarettes? * For the record, before you read this, let it be known that I actually agree the officer(s) in question went above and beyond too quickly in the case you mentioned. But allow me to play devils advocate, because it's a role I love to play... Let me give you a scenario...if a person is loitering on your property and you call the police and want them removed, but said person doesn't want to be removed, the police you call MUST remove that person, whether said individual wants to leave or not. The police don't get to just say, oh well, he doesn't want to leave...sorry sir, and go on their merry way. They also don't get to stand there for 8 hours, getting none of their other work done (because I know, they have no other work to do), trying to convince this person to "pretty please with sugar on top" leave the premises in which they don't belong. While you're busy putting all of the onus on the police in this SPECIFIC scenario (while ignoring the hundreds of thousands of scenarios where the police do an outstanding job), because THEY [the police] should be the only ones held to a higher standard, how about we start putting some responsibility on the citizens shoulders, too? How about we DON'T have citizens breaking the law by selling loose cigarettes in front of a f***ing store that sells cigarettes legitimately? Who, by the way, called the police WANTING that person removed from the premises. How about we start holding each other to the same high standard we want out of our solders and police officers? Oh, is that asking too much? Now, all that being said, should a person have to die because of any of this? Of course not. And it's sad that happened, and it shouldn't have happened. But let's start recognizing life is a two way street and EVERYONE needs to be held to a higher standard, because -- and not to go all Batman on you here -- but these criminals, petty or otherwise, thrive on the indulgence of societies understanding. I'm sick and tired of having to look over my shoulder while I walk my kids down the f***ing street because some f***wad may crack my skull for 5 dollars and rape my kids while they're at it. I'm sick of holding police to a higher standard, while holding the citizens they protect us from from to NO f***ing standards at all.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Jan 2, 2015 -> 03:05 PM) I think the hipsters are already being priced out of Logan Square. Wonder what neighborhood they will move too.. They're starting to invade Bridgeport.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 2, 2015 -> 02:48 PM) How dare you attempt to justify breaking the law. Normally, I'd agree with your sarcasm here, being that I'm a law abiding citizen, but what they're doing with these cameras is very grey area. For starters, they lack due process, which we're supposed to be guaranteed. Secondly, they're tinkering with how long yellows last (it's supposed to be based on the area speed limit, but Rham has most -- if not all of them -- set to the lowest allowed 3 seconds. Then, they're often tinkering with the allowed speed limits (setting them artificially low, knowing people will speed out of exasperation or simply not realizing the speed limit dropped from 30 to 25 for a few blocks for no reason). These cameras need to go away, as for all their bulls*** reasons, the only real reason is revenue without having to pay police or anyone else to write them tickets.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 2, 2015 -> 07:55 AM) Or to attract candidates to work in some locals. The choice starting out seems to be low paying jobs in low crime areas or low paying jobs in high crime areas. The best police eventually are promoted to jobs where they see the least amount of crime. That may be the biggest recipe for problems. When it comes to a lot of government jobs, how long you've worked there also tends to have this same effect. Doesn't matter that you're very mediocre at your job, or the least productive so long as your productive enough, if you've been there for 20 years you get the better vacation days, the better pay, the better hours, etc.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 2, 2015 -> 07:48 AM) And students grasp at any excuse. I was told by one parent that the reason her son was failing my class was because I didn't like him. I just pulled out copies of his work, printed out the work he submitted on-line, noting that almost all of it was late. I also showed her the rubric for the major assignment. I showed her the semester benchmark that he left mostly blank because he wasn't allowed to use the restroom as quickly as he would have liked. There was a long line and it was one at a time in the restrooms to help fight cheating. Her conclusion, I was a terrible teacher who didn't like her kid and that's why he failed. Later in the year she pulled him from the school because all the teachers were against her son and hated him. One of my MA classes was American Lit through the lens of economic systems. We read works like Cosmopolis, An American Dream, Invisible Man, The Great Gatsby, The Sun Also Rises, etc. One student was so upset that a couple times he had to leave the room, once it was so bad he was thisclose to needing security to escort him out. He earned an A in the class. To add a little levity I brought a bandanna to class and called it the bulls*** flag. We took turns throwing it. That didn't work long. Even though I was pushed way out of my comfort zone and my ideas were challenged, pushed, pulled, stretched, and discredited, it was my favorite class. All the training I received here from the right wing wackos really helped. I never sensed your views would cause a poor grade, just the opposite, sitting on the sidelines would have. That they do, I witnessed this on a few occasions while I was a student myself.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 1, 2015 -> 07:01 PM) The exact same protections every college students have regardless of reason, or even without a specific reason against a professor. Depending on the University there are numerous avenues for appealing grades. Every professor I've had enjoyed debate about what they are teaching. It is by far the best way to teach. The students are engaged and they learn a valuable life skill that carries into the work place. Should your employees have feared an unfair job review because you may have disagreed with their political views? You shouldn't have to be appealing grades because your teacher "hates" (a strong word) your political views, IF that's even the case here. If a student wanted to take a class to learn debate, they'd take a debate class. If I'm learning computer programming, I don't want to debate you about giving me a fair grade because you feel it's a "valuable life skill" and you're a douchebag that can't separate your political views from the teaching process.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Jan 1, 2015 -> 10:30 AM) um... you're not damned if you do your job correctly... For most jobs, yes, not that one. You realize you can file a grievance/complaint against any police officer, for any reason you'd like, at any time you'd like? You probably didn't realize that, but you can, and it happens to them A LOT, whether they do their jobs properly or not. And no, the city doesn't just ignore these complaints. The types of people they tend to deal with on a daily basis aren't the types of people we get to deal with on a daily basis, and those types of people tend to file complaints because they're mad the police don't allow them to break laws willy nilly like they'd prefer.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 2, 2015 -> 07:31 AM) Maybe fewer, but more professional police is the answer and the NYPD is offering to be the experiment. My view is they basically are giving a giant f*** you not only to the Mayor, but to all the citizens thus confirming their police before the public view that some people already had. It's hard to get "professional" anything when states continue to lower the bar as to what requirements are necessary to perform these jobs because of quota based hiring practices.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Dec 29, 2014 -> 09:26 AM) I've decided I want a new game console (I currently have a Wii). I am debating between a PS4 and XBox One. It will be primarily for sports game like NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB. I do not play first person shooters. Thoughts? PS4. I know a lot of people with the Xbox1, and none of them like it, all of them wish they had bought a PS4, and the one person I know that has both only plays his PS4 now. And I say this as a person who owned both the original Xbox and 360, and never considered a Playstation until this round of consoles came out.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Dec 23, 2014 -> 07:55 AM) So they fear it was taken over by hackers, does that mean that a plane can be completely remote controlled? Because that part seems a bit farfetched I mean, an entire plane completely disappearing the way this one did is farfetched, but thats another story No, it cannot be.

QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 23, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) I feel like the law did everything politically possible to address price controls through billing and pricing transparency changes. But it didn't, because you don't get the prices until after you've had the service performed, and it's not like a profession where you can "shop around" most of the time. If I go into Jiffy Lube, I see the prices on the wall, and if they're too high, I leave. Medical prices are more like, have your oil changed and then we'll tell you how much it costs...great, now I'll know for next time if I have the exact same ailment. The law did some good, but it didn't really do much to curb costs in any way...insurance companies/hospitals and doctors are making more than ever.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 22, 2014 -> 06:00 PM) I assume there's a handful of you guys who could help me with this - I trust this board moreso than Stack Overflow so I'll try here first: Here's the long issue, someone helping me would be VERY appreciated. I'm taking over marketing for a company that has a terrible website that's tied into a ton of things they do making the location of its hosting mission critical. The site is on IIS, which means installing WordPress at companyname.com/blog will present nothing but issues. What I would like to do is purchase external hosting, install WordPress, get the blog going etc, and then "point" companyname.com/blog to this external hosting. Here's the kicker, it has to still look as if it's at companyname.com/blog the entire time. So if there's a blog post, it has to be at companyname.com/blog/this-is-my-blog-post. I figured this would be fairly simple, some sort of masking or something, but I cannot find any answers, tech help on the hosting side doesn't seem to understand the request. Obviously, if I could install WordPress on IIS with confidence, this wouldn't be an issue, but apparently it'll run like crap. Has anyone seen this before or does anyone have any idea how this can be achieved. I really just need companyname.com/blog to show the contents of publicly visible web hosting but be a part of the wesite. Oh, and a subdomain is out of the question, because research shows it has way less of an affect on SEO than having the blog in a subdirectory. Thanks so much to the superhero who has an answer for me. Usually this is done through DNS with an alias or cname.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 22, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) How Vermont's single-payer health care dream fell apart An appendectomy, for example, can cost anywhere from $1,529 to $186,955, depending on how good of a deal an insurer can get from a hospital. And people blame insurance companies when it's doctors/hospitals making up arbitrary values ranging from 1,529$ to 186,955$. That's what this law needed to put a stop too, and did nothing of the sort.

QUOTE (Yoda @ Dec 18, 2014 -> 02:10 PM) I've worked on a couple of HP All-in-One desktop's and first thing I noticed is lack of a CD/DVD drive. Since I work on computers and still have a lot of useful CD's I carry around, this was kind of a bummer. Another thing is they all come w/ Windows 8. If is not used to the new tile based Metro interface this could be a bit like going to a basic PC class just to re-learn how to navigate between your Desktop and the Windows Store. Other then that, they are fast and convenient since all you have is just the monitor and a wireless keyboard and mouse. Get a high capacity USB key, it essentially replaces all of those CD's you carry. You can put anything on it from utilities to music, and even make them bootable drives.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 18, 2014 -> 06:06 PM) I started dating my GF in July. Since then, I've lost 20 pounds of muscle. Went from 211 to 191.5. So disappointing to see all that hard work go down the drain. Getting back into it the last couple weeks though. I've been eating and training like a mad man. Sustained a neck injury a few months ago resulting in a bulging disc/spinal issue which left me unable to do anything other than cardio for the last three months was hard to swallow. While I know I can get back to where I was quite easily, it's probably high time I start re-evaluating the stage of life I'm entering and start lifting less and doing more of other forms of working out in it's place. I'm not in my 20's anymore.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 11, 2014 -> 08:30 AM) Yeah, I am sure we can all find things we don't like in any budget bill. I don't see what's wrong with pointing some of those out. Just never saw you pointing them out when the Democrats were crafting them is all.
