Top 5 most underrated players in baseball.
joeynach replied to Jordan4life_2007's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If you play fantasy baseball non of these guys are underrated. The only way they can be underrated is you only follow a team and not the MLB (looking at you yankee fans) or are just a casual baseball fan at best. For the rest of us these are common names and we know how good these guys are. -
I thought Viciedo's agent was Jamie Torres, I remember hearing that his relationship with the sox from Alexi helped foster the deal with Viciedo. I also thought Thornton was represented by Diamond Sports Mgmt. I also think Konerko is at 12.141 years of service time.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 19, 2011 -> 07:10 PM) May 1st is my goal. That's like 4-5 starts to be covered by Sale before he gets sent to AAA. I guess me too, I dont expect Peavy to be ready opening day. I expect his time in spring training to progress slower with more recovery built in. I see him taking extended spring training until the end of april making a couple minor league rehab starts and coming up around May 10th.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 19, 2011 -> 03:34 PM) Crede on a minor league deal? No risk at all there. The bat is a tad above replacement level and defense still plus when healthy. There is no way he remains healthy enough to contribute for a full season or sees enough playing time to make a real impact.

We basically have the same thing Kalapse. Only that I have added 6 Pre-Arb player contracts at $410k a piece, that how I got to about $125.16M. I actually just discovered that the league minimum (Pre-Arb) salary is going to rise to $414.5K in 2011, source here. I guess my salary total is really $125.184M. The only discrepancy I have, which is dumb really, is that I have De Aza playing time at 2.042 and you have at 1.041. My source is here

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 07:31 PM) I think it's best to just wait until the 10 days are over and try to sign him as a free agent. He can be out-righted to detroit's AAA team then if he agrees, though he would still have to be paid $2.3M in the minors.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 18, 2011 -> 07:22 PM) And $2.3 is actually pretty decent value for him, however, I wouldn't pay him $2.3M for 6-7 starts. A recent article on southsidesox had handicapped Peavy's start this year at 16. To which I agree, I think assuming he will only miss 6 or 7 starts is very optimistic. The sox have already said they will not rush him back as they did from his achilles injury last time. He wound up being awful and having to go down to AAA for a couple starts, then he came back up and was great. This time around they will be much more patient so I am assuming we need 15 starts from somewhere. Pena is a spot starter so 15 is out of the question for him. Sale maybe, but Cooper has said he wants him to have 1 role and 1 role only. If he starts for Peavy what do you do when Peavy comes back, send him to AAA. If you get Galarraga you can keep Sale in his 1 role only mode.

I have 26 guys on my White Sox Payroll sheet, basically becuase of Lillibridge and De Aza, both will make the 2011 league minimum, which is set at 410K for 2011. Its possible only 1 makes the roster, but its possible that both make the roster and Viciedo starts in AAA, in which case all 3 guys salaries count for 2011 payroll since Viciedo's is guaranteed. So I included all 3 salaries towards payroll. My calculations have the White Sox committed at $125.16M to 26 players for 2011. This includes: Buehrle (14M) + Peavy (16M) + Jackson (8.35M) + Danks (6M) + Floyd (5M) + Sale (.41M) + Santos (.41M) + Thornton (3M) + Crain (4M) + Pena (1.6M) + Ohman (1.5M) + Castro (1.2M) + AJ (2M) + Vizquel (1.75M) + Viciedo (1.25M) + Morel (.41M) + Beckham (.41M) + Ramirez (2.75M) + Lillibridge (.41M) + Konerko (12M) + Teahen (4.75M) + Quentin (5.05M) + Rios (12M) + Pierre (8.5M) + De Aza (.41M) + Dunn (12M) This includes the break even money coming in for Pierre (+3.5M) and the money going out for Linebrink (-3.5M). 2011 Payroll Commitments + Money In/Money Out= $125.184 (26 Players)

Armando Galarraga was DFA'd by the Tigers today. He had already agreed to a 1 Year $2.3M deal. Since he was DFA'd he can probably be had for a low level prospect or simply claimed if they choose to release him. Question is do you think the sox would have interest. He could be used for the anticipated 15 or so starts that Peavy will likely miss, and then shuffled to the bullpen or minors afterwards. He could also be used on the bullpen if the sox decided to make Sale a starter. Picking up a guy like Galarraga would allow the sox to keep Sale's role static, either soley in the pen or solely a starter, something that Coop has said he wants.

Quick question, does anyone have Scott Merkin's email address?

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 14, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) As of yesterday, before the Thome signing, the combined projections I calculated (CAIRO, Bill James, Fan Projections) had the Twins at 90.1 wins. They had the Sox at 90.7. I think this move probably puts the Twins ahead in terms of projected wins based on WAR. Thome was worth 3.6 wins last year. I really doubt he does that again, but still, I think he'll be good for at least 1.5. How will he get anything close to that in terms of playing time. Thome really took off in the 2nd half last year when Morneau went down with that concussion. That opened up a spot for Thome to play everyday. He even said it himself that the ability to go from a bench player in the first half to an everyday player in the second half really helped him fresh and at the top of his game. That wont happen this year unless someone else goes down for the entire 2nd half again. Look at what Thome did last year in the same at-bats when he went from a fill in role to more consistent role. Pre All Star: (145 AB) .255/.377/.552/.929 10HR/39RBI Post All Star: (131 AB) .313/.448/.710/1.158 15HR/30RBI

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 9, 2011 -> 01:18 PM) Honestly...for a pick in the first half of the first round...that'd be at best an adequate pick, and somewhat disappointing. For a White Sox 1st round pick it would be a steal

Im fine with him as a long term reliever, if he turns out to be the next Matt Thornton that would still be one hell of a draft pick.

White Sox sign Will Ohman to 2 year deal worth $4mil

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 8, 2011 -> 03:34 PM) Completely agree. Rotation is great, could be terrific at full health. Bullpen is solid. Offense is solid. Infield defense is top-notch. Outfield defense is solid. No holes whatsoever. Complete everywhere. May not be top 5 in starter's ERA, runs, bullpen ERA, total defense, but we are pretty darn close in all facets. Not that these are holes but there are some weak spots. Offensive production from 3B position, defensive capability of RF, arm strength of LF. I agree there could be much worse in terms of holes, but the sox are not perfect. -
Id say he is done. There is not much room to even add anyone to the 25man roster. The Bullpen is set, lineup is set, the bench is set, the only thing I could imagine would be still searching for a fill in candidate for Peavy who can shift to the pen when/if he returns.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 09:29 PM) I'm not saying you're wrong, but haven't there been issues in the past with Ozzie using these types of pitchers improperly? I don't think it's exactly a good idea to add this type of player if your coach cannot use him properly, presuming I'm not misremembering things. Please tell me if I'm wrong on that. Well he is definitely a LOOGY, but I think KW makes this move knowing that Sale is going to have to come out of the pen and start for awhile until Peavy gets back. This provides the 2nd lefty for our pen during the time where Sale is starting. If/when Peavy comes back we are going to have a pretty good bullpen. Thornton Sale Santos Crain Pena Ohman Infante -

White Sox sign Will Ohman to 2 year deal worth $4mil
joeynach replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ugh Will Ohman is ok I guess, he owns a career 40% GB%, which is the most important stat for pitchers in our park. The GB% is used to anticipate Fielder Independent Pitching in the Saber community. He Ohman posts that 40% number than his xFIP suggest a 4.24 ERA. Eh OK not great, fine, whatever. Ohman has had 3 season in which he had a Gb% over his career norm, and 3 seasons where he had a Gb% under his career norm. So he is the definition of hit or miss. My question is this. Knowing all this about Ohman, why not just bring back Erik Threets, they are virtually the same pitcher. I know its a small sample size but Threets pitched really well for the sox last year, 55.6 GB %, FIP of 2.84, and xFIP of 3.83. You can have Threets for the league minimum, you probably have to pay Ohman $2M for his services. I dont get it. -
I think one of the biggest difference is that the Angels were going to need Wood to really produce in order to win and compete for the division. The White Sox don't necessarily need Morel to hit like a stud becuase the burden on the offense to score runs falls on the proven guys like Pierre, Alexi, Dunn, Konerko, Rios, CQ, etc. Morel is there defense and to gain plate experiences. Sure if he hits for a Carlos Pena batting average it will be hard to keep him in there, but even if he hits a Joe Crede career .252 BA then Morel and the sox will be fine. The Angles really lost out last year in offensive production, espeically when Morales went down, so their was more pressure on Wood there.
